Systems and models are everywhere around us, guiding us through our daily lives. The highway system. The global positioning system (GPS). Even the alphabet is a system to help us construct words and sounds with which we can communicate with each other.
Yet, when it comes to golf, systems and models are typically frowned upon. Golf is presented to the masses as a game of "feel" or "instinct". "SWING YOUR SWING" is the cry from the commentary box (or on social media) when an unorthodox swing has some success at a high level, suggesting that just because somebody made something work, we should ALL try and just do what comes naturally! Madness!
However, it is my strong opinion that the lack of a system in golf instruction is still the biggest challenge for the improving golfer. There's no roadmap or structure on how to improve. It's just an endless cycle of RU-vid clip after Instagram reel after TikTok video looking for the magic pill (which SPOILER ALERT really doesn't exist).
The P System is one system within golf that references the 10 Positions of the Swing as described by Mac O'Grady (M.O.R.A.D.) who developed them in order to better organise the swing into clear positions following Homer Kelley's attempt to do something similar with the 12 sections in The Golfing Machine book. The P System helps an instructor and a student to "see" the swing in a way whereby they can analyse and identify the most deficient part of the swing that requires the most attention, and then work on drills to improve that part of the swing. By having specific checkpoints in time with which to compare swings to, The P System allows for direct comparisons to track progress (or not) and to help keep a student stay on track with their practice drills and feels, without which, they would simply be "hitting balls" and "searching" for the answer which seldom gets the desired outcome and more often leads to frustration and disappointment.
Find an instructor who has a MODEL and a SYSTEM so that you can understand the destination and the stops along the way. This complete understanding will help you to stick with a new feel/drill as you have the clarity to know where the hard work in heading. You'll have full expectations of what the ball striking or ball flight changes should be, and you'll experience a much more rewarding and long-lasting improvement to your golf swing.
