He is remembered in History for being the most brutal and notorious King that England has ever had. Henry VIII’s kingdom when he died in 1547 was completely changed and he would make a number of brutal changes that resulted in the suffering of so many. But the Tudor King is most famously known for his six wives, six women of incredibly different backgrounds who are united in their marriage to the most savage monarch of them all. These six women all had miserable marriages, and their lives would be ended in many different ways, some more brutal than others, but all equally tragic. These are the painful deaths of Henry VIII’s six wives.

"Henry was a weak man". Guess the vikings who r**ed women were also weak, or any warriors or soldiers in most of history who went on to conquer the earth and abuse women were also "weak". No he wasnt weak just evil. most greatest rulers in history where like this. They were ruthless and evil. But not weak. People didn't fear them for nothing. Henry 8 is talk most because of what he did to his wives but what about what other rulers did to their slave women or to other men. Or using their power to take other men's wives as mistress. Things like these are common. Most were just better at doing it in secret. Same way todays elites and rich have private island or secret places for 53x parties with women from human trafficking. Would you also call them weak?? eventhough they still manage to achieve more in their life than you and most people? They are just evil. Weakness has nothing to do with it. I dont know why the obsession today where for many people, they can only classify others in two categories "real/strong" or "fake/weak". Its like an insecurity or something. Is a woman who murders her husband a "weak" woman?? or is she just evil?

I understand your being upset but people often see things through a emotional filter. If you really study history and have a unbiased understanding of the time and events you will see that yes Henry was brutal but was a man of his time. his behavior was well within the standard of the time. King and queens of that period often had to be brutal in order to control and counter efforts to de throne or kill them. Take Mary 1st often touted as a bloody killer but in reality when one studies her life and reign she was probably the most merciful of all the Tudor monarchs. She refused at first to kill Lady Jane when any other Tudor from H7 to E1 would have executed her right away. She was only later forced to do so by a second attempt by her father to depose Mary. It was quite a different world back then and would be alien to us in most everything including the way they thought. I am however interested to hear anyone's thoughts on this. For instance I diverge from common opinion and do not believe H8 would have killed his eldest daughter Mary if she did not sign the document renouncing the church and declaring her bastardization. It is a fascinating question I would like to hear opinion on.

Anne's composure on the day of her execution is the definition of admirable. And props to her ladies for taking care of her after, that took great strength and courage as well to make sure she was handled with the same care and grace she presented on her own. It's often hard to think of these horrible events and the real people that suffered, but you put so much emotion and humanity into their accounts and paint a perfect picture that puts us there with them. I feel for her, as she probably was not given much choice before her death after childbirth. She'd likely have been beheaded for rejecting the King's advances as fickle as Henry was, and he'd have taken it out on her family for disrespecting his authority. He could have made up any lie as he frequently did to get what he wanted, she probably acted out of self preservation, you had to back then. It wasn't like now-a-days.

So, Archbishop Thomas Cranmer declared that the marriage between Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn was null and void., which meant that it was as if the marriage had never happened.... Ergo... Anne was never Queen, and thus, her supposed affairs could no longer be called 'treason', so, on what grounds could she be executed? Any love affairs of Anne, as the Marchioness of Pembroke were not state matters, and not treasonous. Her execution was just vindictiveness on Henry's part and ambition on Cromwell's. I often wonder whether the latter thought of Anne in the hours before his own execution...

Women of this time were taught that men would have mistresses. Wives were expected to "look the other way" and remain faithful. Henry could not put Anne Boleyn aside while Katherine of Aragon lived. I believe that he knew that there would be a clamor for Katherine's return. Once Katherine died, Anne swiftly fell from Henry's good graces. Henry also had a hard time putting Anne of Cleves aside. This was because she was foreign-born. Thomas Cromwell lost his life for advancing this marriage and not working hard enough for its dissolution. Cranmer's eventual decision was that there was a pre-contract with another man. She was given many estates and funds--on condition that she remain in England. She also had precedence over all the women at court--save the Queen and his daughters.

"These six women all had miserable marriages....all equally tragic." I don't think these assertions are factually correct or supported by the evidence base. Even Catherine of Aragon, whose last years were undoubtedly tragic after being abandoned and banished to a lonely existence in various isolated castles and manor houses, was by all accounts in a loving relationship with King Henry for 20 years or so before he fell for Anne Boleyn. He respected her enough to make her Regent while he went off to war in France. Anne of Cleves only had to put up with Henry for 6 months. When the marriage was annulled, she received a very generous financial settlement, land and a number of properties in England including Hever Castle and Richmond Palace. She and Henry remained on friendly terms for the rest of his life and she was often invited to court by the King. So it could be argued she did very well out of her brief marriage. Catherine Parr was also made Regent by Henry while he was away in France indicating that he trusted and respected her. She was bequeathed a generous yearly allowance in Henry's will, as well as jewels and clothes, and stipulated that she was to be treated as if she were still queen after his death.

Really good documentary. Just one thing, I think Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn had happy marriages to Henry, as he was not yet the tyrant he would later become (Anne likely would feel differently when the accusations of adultery, incest arose, and Henry believed them). I think the other four, starting with Jane Seymour, might have been more on edge as Henry was no longer the benevolent man of his youth.

I played her proudly and everyone found it very amusing the way I was still proud and confident even in the part where I got “beheaded” somehow I had played her this way not even knowing about this detail of her life. Listening to this video out of all the tragic stories of the wives of Henry, my heart sinks for Anne. What a brave, strong woman who met a very tragic and unfortunate end. But what a wonderful thing that her daughter became queen against all odds, and reigned for so many years.

I cannot understand why after Henry had Anne executed, any woman would have wanted him. They all wanted the prestige of being a queen, even if it meant they were taking a risk of ending up on the scaffold themselves. Fools! I cannot feel sorry for Anne. If it was true that she was religious, then it tells me she was a hypocrite. She knowingly stole a man from his wife and married him. I read that she was also cruel to Catherine of Aragon. Who was the God she was praying to? What did she confess to the priest when she went to confession? She was not a good person imo!

Does anyone else that Anne just might be guilty. If Anne herself was correct in saying that Henry had trouble siring a heir that after the last miscarriage she might be just desperate enough to try and have a child with her brother. They were very cunning and capable people so I think there is a chance some of the accusations could be true. Anne proved herself to be quite the fire cracker and not a submissive and humble wife. She by that time could have been upset enough at the way Henry was treating her by that time because through her eyes she to sacrificed and went through much to become his wife. Perhaps she was as capable and willing to be quite brave and determined enough in independent action to be working with non standard or out of the box solutions to her problems. She was in fact fighting for not only her family and right as queen but for her very life. Any ideas on this?

If I had only moments to live I would not die with a lie coming from my mouth. Anne asked everyone to pray for her. The moment right before she was beheaded she prayed “ Jesus accept my soul”. These things lead me to think that all the charges were trump up. Also the men hung I can’t see them sleeping with Anne. One played music not only for Anne but the King also. He was gay, in fact historic papers he was said to be one of Anne’s brothers lover( he was bi sexual”. That was according to his wife. Which to me really makes me believe that all 5 men were innocent.

@@tammybekhan2276I do think that you are most likely right that she was herself innocent. But IMHO I am not 100% on this as I feel she had motive and had proven herself formidable and cunning. If H8 was at that time having a sexual dysfunction and she was under great pressure and perhaps threat for her life and her families position it is slightly possible that conceiving a child with her brother in order to be able to pass it off as the kings would be a solution to her dilemma. However as you point out they took their religion seriously so I agree I have a hard time seeing her lie. But IMHO there still is that sliver of doubt only becasue she defiantly had the motive and just possibly the will to carry such a dangerous plan out. On the other hand I do also admit that its logical to believe much of the evidence against her was concocted which also points to her being not guilty. Sadly we will never know. I am not sure about the evidence of some of them being gay since I have not seen it and from my understanding from the author whom they based the Tudor series on said in a interview that notion was a fictitious license. Anyway thanks for you comment. This history is so fascinating to discuss. :)
