CLIP DESCRIPTION:
During a peaceful prisoner exchange, Benjamin (Mel Gibson) recognizes Col. Tavington (Jason Isaacs), as the man who murdered his son, and the two officers have a tete-a-tete.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, the director/producer team responsible for such sci-fi blockbusters as Independence Day, Stargate, and Godzilla, take a step back in time with this drama set during the American Revolution. Farmer Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) was born and raised in South Carolina, and fought bravely during the French-Indian wars. But since the death of his wife, Benjamin has renounced violence and quietly tends his crops, raising his seven children alone. In 1776, over Benjamin's objections, his oldest son Gabriel (Heath Ledger) joins the fight against the British. Gabriel returns from battle seriously wounded, with Lord General Cornwallis (Tom Wilkinson) calling for his arrest. A skirmish breaks out on Benjamin's plantation, and one of his children is killed as Gabriel is captured by Col. Tavington (Jason Isaacs) and sentenced to hang. Benjamin sets aside his vow of pacifism and rescues Gabriel; with the help of his former comrade-in-arms Harry Burwell (Chris Cooper), the father and son form a regiment of Carolina patriots whose cunning and ruthlessness make them heroes among the colonists -- and wanted men by British troops. Loosely adapted from the true story of Francis Marion and filmed on location in South Carolina, The Patriot was the first feature film made with the cooperation of the Smithsonian Institute, who advised the producers on historical accuracy. Joely Richardson also stars as Charlotte, Benjamin's sister-in-law who helps him care for the children.

One of the best parts about this scene is that the line "why wait" along with the "soon" response were completely improvised. The scene was supposed to end on "before this war is over I'm going to kill you," but Jason Isaacs reasoned that given Tavington's role & background (not to mention the lines of redcoats at his back) he wouldn't have been afraid of Martin at all, much less silenced by his threat. So he continued to try and provoke, resulting in a very nice moment of contemplation from Gibson before his final reply.

Absolutely love how he whistles for the dogs knowing Cornwallis can’t do anything about it! Also, you can tell that O’Hara has a distaste for Col. Tavington. Even in the deleted scenes you can tell he disapproves of how he acts.
@lindaoneil5085
@lindaoneil5085 Год назад
Tavington's fellow officers disliked him also; they didn't talk to him, and regarded him with contempt whenever he walked into a gathering of officers. By Tavington's brutality toward the civilian population, he was giving his fellow brothers-in-arms a bad reputation, which they did not appreciate.

Benjamin is such a great character. He shows great forbearance here despite his terrible loss and Tavington's taunt on top of it. No doubt he would make good on his promise to kill Tavington, and I like how he states it matter-of-factly, like it was a certain event. I know this movie has some serious faults, but if we can look past them it's an incredibly moving and inspiring story. Not usual for the hero to lose two of their kids, but it's important here as it conveys how the stakes were high for Americans. Tavington is a incredible villain, truly cold hearted, but Jason Isaacs makes him so interesting somehow... the audience is transfixed. Such a great actor in anything he does.

This scene is almost perfect....only because perfection is truly unattainable. But...it's close. The nuances and body language tell the story more than the words...
