THE PENGUIN TEASER TRAILER REACTION | Double Toasted - There's probably a lot of you that are watching a breakdown of the new Penguin series teaser trailer for HBO Max, doing a mashup of easter eggs and what DC has snuck in in terms of eluding to what we're going to get with the show - however, we at Double Toasted might be thinking a little further than just what's displayed in this trailer. Today we're talking about the other villains that we'd like to see treated similarly to how The Penguin is. What villains do YOU toasties think should be getting similar treatment and tone? Nolan’s films felt like Batman in the real world. Reeves’ take feels like Batman’s world brought to life, and I love that. I feel immersed in Batman: Year One when watching The Batman. Reeves nailed the gritty tone of Miller’s Year One.

That could work, but I'd be wary that it'd end up like that Daredevil Netflix series, where you have all this cool grounded stuff, and then suddenly...NINJAS! That's why the season with Bullseye was so good to me, back to SOME plausibility despite his "Powers" but also terrifying at the same time.

Mr.Freeze is LONG OVERDUE for a proper live action adaptation. He's arguably one of Batman's most sympathetic villains. Has to stay in that suit to stay alive, trying to find a cure to his wife's disease, and is basically a cast out by society so he has to resort to crime to fund his research. I feel like if they emphasized that, you could get a compelling drama. Two other stories I'd like to see is either court of owls as the first movie kinda teased a secret rich society or a similar story to Arkham origin's where Batman is being hunted by various assassins like Deathstroke, Bane, Deadshot, and more. Apparently, the next Villian is gonna be Clayface in The Batman 2. I am interested to see how they portray Clayface, I would go a more body horror route with him personally.

The thing with clayface is there are several different versions of it so there's a lot to pick from and hell if they mix it up a little bit I wouldn't mind either. It's actually pretty fascinating how you could make something like that

It's an interesting question because I love the gritty, grimmy, real world they created, but adding a Shape-shifter done with a realistic effect could be cool. Like he'd operate like the alien from The Thing, so when he transforms its kinda gross.

If you wanna make a realistic batman I think you're misunderstanding the point of a super hero/batman product. Batman taking on fantastical elements and overcoming them is what makes him great. Batman is a billionaire with advanced gadgets, fighting mutated people, monsters, magic and his best friend is a alien. With all due respect if you want a realistic batman, read sherlock holmes- let's stay away from bad ideas like trying to make comics "real" This is a man who's on par with superman and Wonderwoman, you can give him powerful villains to fight and still make it grounded.

The joker is realistic and it's the comic book adaptation with the best return, low budget big returns, I wouldn't be suprrised if it even got more earnings that the silly avengers movies. I'm for my heroes to be grounded in reality and humorless and the success of the Joker and The Batman mean not all of us want to see supeheros made clowns. If anything mark my words, even deadpool which in concept is a funny dude will underperform. Stop forcing heroes to be comedians! Leave the comedy to peter parker and deadpool but give us more joker and more the batman.

Batman INHERENTLY lives in a world where people with powers exist lol it would be less in universe realistic for people to not actually have powers Part of the appeal of Batman is he's a normal guy taking on things with his brain and skills while going against people with super powers Also why'd you bring up marvel? you got insecurities to marvel- marvel has alot of variety and diversity in their films. Joker didn't make as much as both spiderverses and black panther alone. You're comparing apples to oranges- there's plenty of comic book batmans that aren't realistic and aren't...clowns. Watch a monty zander batman video, batman videos by a REAL batman fan who knows what batman's about. And it has nothing to do with clowns or jokes- blame the bad DC movies not the character's origins completely.

It’s entirely possible Slade could appear in Gotham for a contract, Black Mask and Penguin have the funds, but I’d prefer we keep save him for a Nightwing project and give the spotlight to lesser known Batman villains.

I'm afraid I disagree with the take that The Batman's Rogue Gallery should be made more realistic. After Christopher Nolan made Batman's villains more realistic, I was kinda disappointed, except for Scarecrow, Joker and Two-Face. I really want to see the fantastical elements be brought back to Batman's villains, have fun with it, go crazy! Have Clayface be a huge monster that is also a tortured soul. Have Killer Croc be a human with a skin condition that becomes the monster in the sewers. Have Man-Bat be a scientist trying to cure his disease, only to become a terrifying creature of the night. Have Poison Ivy by the master of all plant-life and an eco-terrorist. Have Mr. Freeze be a man trying to save his wife while giving him his suit and freeze gun.

I mean, the Penguin is just a guy with a big nose and a tophat, but Matt Reeves decided, "Nah, that's too implausible, make him just some dude with a scar on his lip." Clayface is just going to be a guy who wears a tragedy mask, Killer Croc is going to be a mob hitter with a crocodile tattoo, and Mr. Freeze will be a serial killer who leaves his victims inside freezers.

@Tamlinearthly __ No see, but that's fine for The Penguin, because he's slightly more normal compared to the rest of Batman's Rogues Gallery. A majority of his villains THRIVE on being fantastical. Not saying you can't make them grounded, but they lose a lot of what makes them special when you make them realistic.

Joker is the reason many people prefer more realistic villains. And if anything The sucess of The Batman which many marvel movies envy now proves that there'sa market for heroes grounded in reality and that aren't turned into clowns. The box office of guardians 3 and the batman is similar but The batman has more long term watchability and awards credibility. The cinematography alone is worth of even cinephiles who hate superhero movies (like me) to praise. The time for supehero comedies is over. I actually completely disagree with the take that Reeves’ Gotham is more akin to Nolan’s than it is Burton’s. I find that the Gotham city from the Batman has a real gothic art deco feel to it from the architecture to the framing. Kinda feels like a claustrophobic metropolitan hell. On that same note, I don’t think Reeves ever intended for this world to be wholly focused on “realism”. He’s already embraced some of the fantastical design elements with the set design and his interpretation of Joker. Let’s get some of the more abstract magical elements for the villains.

I do like that concept for a realistic Mr. Freeze. He can be just a regular guy who uses a chemical thrower as his main weapon, with liquid nitrogen as its ammo. But he can also still have the backstory of doing bad things to help his sick wife, and it can question Batman's morality: does he stop this criminal or help him to help his wife

I can't believe nobody said Black Mask. He's the perfect villain to introduce that fits the tone they're going for and with how the movie ended. Have all the crime lords trying to take Falcone's place and Sionis comes in more ruthless and violent than everyone else. Could even introduce him in the Penguin show to set it up. A proper Black Mask too, none of that shit they did in Birds of Prey. lol

I don’t think the goal of The Batman is to be more realistic. It’s just more grounded because Batman is still developing. TDK movies are way more realistic when you compare the Two. You can still present fantasy in a grounded way.

The trailer was so good, hopefully the series will be too. Farrell as the Penguin was one of the best parts of the Batman. I think fans that want fantastical but then get mad when it looks like some Schumacher stuff

Mr freeze could be pretty realistic actually. When you look at examples of MR freezes suit it's pretty mechanical. No goofy latex, it often looks like the product of science. I say they scrap the fish bowl and have something similar to bane's mask from the dark knight that allows him to breath properly, keeping the fact that the suit is essentially a mobile iron lung canon enough. And don't make freeze blue, but a sickly white.

I would begin The Batman 2 with Freeze in an underground lab, making it obvious that he's already working to cure his wife. Then I would reveal that this is taking place right before the flood that The Riddler caused. The flood waters could damage the lab, injure Freeze, and possibly cause him to lose his wife. His main goal in the movie would be to break into Arkham to get revenge on The Riddler.

Matt Reeves talked about wanting to take on the challenge of making a grounded Mr. Freeze. I'd love to see Killer Croc but focusing more on his disease and how it alienates him rather than him being super strong. Professor Pyg if you want a serial killer drama. Idk exactly how they'd do it but part of me feels like KG Beast is low-key becoming relevant again seeing as how things are uneasy between the US and Russia.

I completely disagree with the ultra realistic take on all these villains. We've been there and done that. And don't forget Reeves is the guy that managed to make talking monkeys riding horses with machine guns feel grounded and epic! I have no doubt he can pull off the fantastical elements of Batman's rogues. Also keep in mind Batman is supposed to be pretty much the most dangerous fighter in DC without powers. He really needs villains with some enhancements to present any kind of threat to him.

Mr freeze could be a guy who's wife died well in cryo sleep well he was trying to find a cure for her disease. Now he hunts down everyone responsible for her death and freezes them until their skin turns blue and they die of hypothermia.

If I were to humor the idea of Mr. Freeze in the Reeves universe, I would consider 2 ideas: 1.) Realistically create a way of maybe cryogenically freeze Nora or perhaps have her in a coma or induced sleep/vegetable Or 2.) Nora is already dead, but Freeze is in such insane denial that he believes she’s still alive and even has her body frozen while he commits crime and hunts for a cure.

I had an idea for a Mr Freeze origin series. Nora Fields was frozen in 1984 because of a rare illness. 40 years later, the doctor who froze Nora is mentoring a young Victor fries defrosts Nora. a cure for Nora's illness was found however her 40 year deep freeze had some side effects. she needed to be kept at very low temperatures or else she would overheat and die. Victor took the initiative and took care of Nora, acting as her personal doctor/assistant as well as helping her adjust to modern times. Nora would move back in with her 72 year old younger sister, 109 year old parents, and 50 year old brother in law. this series would not be part of any existing continuity.

With The Batman and the highly anticipated Penguin series, I could imagine what the prosthetics department can accomplish with other villains.Black Mask, Two Face, Mr. Freeze, Clayface etc. We already caught a glimpse of the Joker in a deleted scene. Love how this upcoming series feels like a character piece and mob drama.

They could do professor pyg, but I’ve been hearing that Pattinson really loves the court of owls. I would love the court to be the last villain of the trilogy maybe have joker being targeted by the court and Batman trying to prevent him from being captured. Or for professor Pyg having a super surgeon that has been kidnapping people and turning them into his dolls. Mad hatter being a super genius that stalks women and mind controls them with his technological hats. Think like the new Apple vr head set.

Definitely would love for Mr.Freeze to be the main villian in the next movie. Seeing as how the Riddler was the villian in the last one,it seems Matt Reeves is taking Batman's more goofy and gimmicky villians and making them into legit threats. Also,it's been almost 30 years since Batman & Robin so I think it's safe to put Mr.Freeze on the big screen again😅

Batman took adrenaline at the end of the first film. Just regular medical adrenaline. Not venom, not super steroids, just adrenaline. It's literally printed on the vial.

They could definitely do a Harvey Dent/Two Face character or story in this universe. In some cases in live-action movies they get the Two-Face part down but not the build up to Harvey spiraling. I agree with Korey that the burns itself doesn’t need to be severe, but the mental foreshadowing and emotional scarring does.

Scarecrow, Hush, & Mr. Freeze are my top picks for Matt's Batman Movies. I can see them work well within this established Universe. Honestly I hope they give Joker a rest & let the others shine for once man.... Scarecrow to me is the most interesting Batman Villain right next to The Joker.

Scarecrow needs fear toxin and Two-Face needs their specific dissociative identity disorder. Fear toxin isn't some impossible concoction and Batman Forever is somehow still the closest interpretation we've had. Two-Face is two people and Scarecrow is a chemist.

Hey Double Toasted, I have a request to do a review of another DC project that HBO did. It’s the Magic Arc from Young Justice: Phantoms. The arc starts with the ninth episode of the season and it’s called “Odnu” my favourite character is Klarion the Witch Boy, he is really hilarious. Colin Farrel is that good of an actor. It's not just the makeup, it's his mannerisms, accent, the way he moves and speaks. He embodied the phrase, "transformational acting". If they had kept secret that he was the character until after the movie was released, no one ever would have figured out it was him. Honestly, it would be great if they did Poison Ivy as the main villain of the next movie. Would be very easy to keep her realistic by sticking to her original concept of an eco terrorist who kills people with poison.

Not bad i like the ideas you guys have though i would be nice to see if they could blend both the fantasy and realism even if its just slight but i love the direction of mat reeves batman do either way can work though. Also a lot of other villains that dont have supernatural origins to use. Like calendar man, professor pyg, victor zsassz, hugo strange got nice picks to use to keep that tone.

Victor Zsasz as a serial killer could get a good show with how he starts off, get a se7en vibe & sort of series with Jim Gordon trying to solve the case & catch him. Possibly introduce Hugo Strange in the same season at the court case once Zsasz is found guilty/insane & sent to serve his sentence in Arkham asylum. The court of owls is a must surely and will just print money as an overarching part of Gothams elite.

Oh man, we've not had a proper Mr Freeze in the movies, I feel like Rocksteady did the best job of him. But aside form the original series, and the Sub Zero movie, I love his portrayal in that episode of Batman Beyond. That line of "There may be some momentary discomfort" still sends chills down my spine...sorry for the pun. Also I'd love Scarecrow in this. He's my favourite.

I find it interesting that they mention Rex Calabrese, aka the Lion. He was Selina Kyle's dad in the New 52 and presumed dead before it's revealed that Falcone ran him out of town. So I'd be interested to see what role he plays here.

I'd think Poison Ivy as a misanthropic biochemical engineering. She could have a similar background to the Unabomber who uses plant based poisons in eco terrorism attacks. I mean the Riddler was heavily inspired by aspects of the Zodiac Killer.

Like Clay should be able to change his face with a mask that changes his facial features., zaz would be good also croc born with a deformity, hatter is a ceo and has hackers that hack into Wayne enterprises.
