What is your favorite GoPro setup for filming underwater?

Hey thanks man! I used this for my set up except went with two Kraken 8000s for the lights. Excellent review on the flip system. It’s not the first I heard of it, I just never really took it seriously before.

Timely video. I’m taking my Backscatter tray, Loc-Line arms, GoBe 1000 lights, and GoPro8 on a maiden voyage this weekend. In the past, I’ve used a selfie stick with fairly good results ( GoPro’s stability function works wonders), but a tray will definitely steady the image much more. With regard to filters, I’m not sure how much post-processing work they save. I use Premiere Pro to correct white balance, exposures, and fine-tune the color, as well as adjust speed and cropping. Finally, there are camera settings for both video and still images that can be saved as presets for underwater use and toggling between them while down below.

Hey Brian Sounds like a nice setup you've got and I'm sure you're going to enjoy filming with it. Regarding the red filters, their main advantage is that they add red color to the image your camera captures. You'll probably still have to boast it in post to get the best results, but it's going to be much easier to do so compared to trying to add some red color when the camera has barely captured an of it. It should actually make your post processing work easier.

Just what I’ve been looking for 🙏. Are you able to advise or help with when to use filters/lights with that set up. Am I right in guessing you don’t use the lights and red filter at the same time? Thanks for your channel!!!
@MatthiasLebo
@MatthiasLebo 2 года назад
Correct, with such a setup I would use either the red filters or the lights. Use the red filters when shooting real wide angle shots. Scenes that the lights won't be able to light up enough. For mid and close up shots and would then use the lights and flip the red filters out of the way. Hope this helps?

So validating to see that this is almost my exact setup! I’d just add a clip for the BCD. I only attach the gorilla tripod to dive Blue Heron Bridge, where it’s an absolute necessity. My lights aren’t as awesome, 2 SOLA 1200s, but ooh yes having two is a game changer.

Yeah I agree, a clip on a lanyard is useful and is a good idea for any setup really. Why is the tripod a necessity at Heron Bridge (don’t know the dive site). Is it mainly macro there? The SOLAs are some solid lights. I just don’t like that you acant change the battery pack.

As always, very likable videos and fun to watch them 👌. Since a couple of weeks I'm using for the GoPro H10 the hugyfot vision xs housing and what shall I say, it's just awesome!!!! So many advantages over the classic GoPro diving case like a much larger external screen, the additional battery for the GoPro inside the housing and the much easier handling of the cam, in particular using the pre save settings of the GoPro H10 for the white balance changes, really amazing. Using the GoPro Lab software with QR codes on underwater cards crowns the whole setup. As lights, I'm using two X-LIGHT M15000 Lumen CRI96, with CCK of 5600K, great daylight, awesome lights. The hugyfot vision xs has a 67mm thread and it's very easy and handy switching lenses. For macro shots I'm using the WeeFine WFL13 +18, INON UCL-165 M67 Close-up Lens and X-ADVENTURER Ring Light RL 3000. To enjoy a bit more comfort I'm additional using D&D Multi Core Slavewires SEA&SEA for the lights, awesome. Cheers

@MatthiasLebo
@MatthiasLebo 2 года назад
Thank you so much for your kind words. Glad I was able to help and that you're happy with your choice. :) Taking good photos is not too easy with an Action Cam like the Osmo Action. Make sure to set it to record JPEG & RAW and then edit the RAW files of the photos you like in i.e. Lightroom. That's probably the most important thing to remember. You'll be able to manipulate the RAW files much more than what you can do with the JPEGs. Other than that, keep your ISO limited to max 1600. This should help a little...

I like the setup! O have a go pro 8 with tray 2 video lights, and a flip filter system from switchblade that I've yet to use. Would love to have adjustable arms on my lights like yours but I'm kinda forced to us lots of float arms instead to achieve neutral boyancy. All the clamps on both sets of arms are quite cumbersome even on land. Would love to send you a picture of it and tell me what you think. Going to Bonaire in October

@Tegneaufreak
@Tegneaufreak 2 года назад
Stay with the float arms mate. Try and get it neutral. The setup in the video will pull you upside down all the time making it very hard to film. You don't need to be moving your lights. Photographers do this (because of the flash and backscatter), not video makers.
@MatthiasLebo
@MatthiasLebo 2 года назад
Thanks for the comment mate, but I would disagree that as a videographer you don’t move your lights while underwater. Just imagine you’re changing from wide angle to macro, I would wanna change the position of my lights in such a situation. Or what about using your lights more creatively than simply shining them straight onto your object?

Thank you for this video. Backscatter gave me a quote with 2 8in arms with clamps on both sides, which I think is overkill. Seeing your setup I think flex arms will be fine. How do you like the MW-4300? I’m drawn to the replaceable batteries so that I can swap them out between dives. However I would prefer the USB-C chargeable batteries to the ones that come stock with the light. Do you have a 2nd set you use? When I go diving for the weekend I can do up to 4 hours of diving in a day. So extra batteries are a must & even better if I can easily charge them on the go with a cable & power bank vs a separate charger that I can’t plug in on the boat. I like the Across the Ocean series too! You & James make a good team. Mahalo.
@MatthiasLebo
@MatthiasLebo 2 года назад
Thank for your comment mate. I really think that the flex arms work very well with this setup. Regarding the MW-4300, I think it is a really versatile uw video light. It could probably be a little more powerful - like 6k or 8k lumen - but it was probably a compromise between power and size. Due to its size and weight I think it is ideal for for small to medium sized rigs. The beam is very consistent all the way to the edge and I love the integrated snoot function. I recommend getting the snoot module in addition though if you want to use it to its full potential. Definitely get a second set of batteries. The runtime is decent, but they do take quite some time to recharge.

Awesome! I'm sure you'll have lots of fun with this setup. :) How about a lanyard for attaching it to you and then tugging it under your arm when not in use. Or even use two lanyards, one on each side. I'm thinking about something like this: amzn.to/3dve4O7

As I practice with the setup (So far only on land) I find that the holding mechanism is not strong enough and the lens tends to suddenly move forward. I wonder if you did it with the lens on top since gravity will keep it in place better. I will try it that way now. Thanks yet again.

Only after receiving it did I realize that if attaching a tripod to the middle screw mount, you cannot mount the GoPro in the middle above it. @MatthiasLebo

You can stick to this rule. If your lights are not reaching our object anymore (so if your object is further away than 2-3 meters) it doesn't make sense to use them. Turn them off and use the red filter instead.

How is the buoyancy in this setup?
@MatthiasLebo
@MatthiasLebo 2 года назад
Actually not too bad. It is negatively buoyant, but you could adjust for that by adding some floats to it. For general underwater filming Ido like it this way though.

@@MatthiasLebo it seemed like a nice size to travel with without the floats.

Was gonna buy gp9 but with their terrible customer service in uk i decided not to😑. Looking for alternatives😁

I can understand. A lot of large companies are very bad at their customer service. It seems like it doesn't matter too much to them. Have you looked at the Paralenz Vaquita (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3IMTkxrMNIQ.html) or the DJI Osmo Action (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-h9_uCcMPJbM.html)?

@@MatthiasLebo thanks for the reply. I have looked at both but cannot decide which one is better in green UK water. Not enough footage on YT I guess. Some of my dives are deeper than 60m so that steers me towards vaquita, however if dji performs better I'd rather leave it on the surface for deep stuff than be annoyed with vaquita's performance 🙄. I assume both will outperform my current old intova edge x😅

What about something simpler and less cumbersome?
@MatthiasLebo
@MatthiasLebo Год назад
Just leave the lights and tripod away and you've got a very simple, streamlined and compact setup.

Nice setup, but does not seem to be neutrally buoyant. No floats of any kind...
@MatthiasLebo
@MatthiasLebo 2 года назад
No, this setup as it is is not neurally buoyant, but not very heavy underwater either. If you want to use it on a tripod to shoot macro, I mustn't be neutrally buoyant or it won't stay stable on your tripod. So it is a matter of compromise. I find it quite easy to handle on wide angle shots even if it is a little negatively buoyant. But in exchange I get a really stable setup when putting it on a tripod and filming macro. You just can't have everything. ;) It's a good point though regarding the floats and I might create another video talking about float options. Thanks for the hint. :)

for me underwater lights play much bigger than using a normal red filter.
@MatthiasLebo
@MatthiasLebo Год назад
I agree, it’s the preferred option to use lights. But that’s not always possible for different reasons (budget, compactness, weight, etc.). If lights are not possible a red filter is the next best thing.

@@MatthiasLebo yeah dive lights are a bit pricey though

@@MatthiasLebo oh really? im totallt new on underwater videocraphy so i'm just learning 😅 i'd like to have mine neutral so i can let go of it and it stays put (i wont do that if theres current), that would be *so* great, but i'm strugling... i'm in the middle of responding the other message you just answered, i'm explaining how's it going so far and why i'm a bit lost, i hope you can help me 🤗

Getting your GoPro rig neutrally buoyant should not be too much of a problem (use floats) but getting it to stay upright as you let go of it, might be more difficult. The smaller your rig the more difficult it is to achieve perfect buoyancy for it.
