In this video I became the perfect Shipt shopper. I did an experiment to see if communicating well, leaving a thank you card, and reusable bag would get me more tips from customers. Watch until the end to find out.

What I wrote in the thank you card:
Hey (customer name),
Thank you so much for choosing Shipt. We look forward to providing service for you again!
From your shopper
(your name)!
Arrived at store Text:
Hi (customer name), I’m your personal shopper, (your name)! I am about to get started with your order. Please let me know if you have any special requests!
Headed to checkout Text:
I’m about to head to the front of the store shortly to checkout. Please let me know if you need anything else.
On the way to deliver Text:
I just checked out. I’m heading your way to drop off the order now. I will drop off the bags at the front and let you know once I’m done. See you soon!
After delivery Text:
It was a pleasure shopping for you today! I hope I met your expectations. Your final receipt will be sent to your email. I look forward to shopping for you in the future!
Open Metro Order Text:
Hi (customer name), This is your shipt shopper (your name), I just claimed your order. I’m headed to the store now. I’m not sure if this order was assigned to someone else and they released it. Sometimes that happens then the customer gets the order later than expected.
I’ll let you know once I’m about to begin shopping. Thanks!
Substitutions:

MAJOR 🔑 to more tips: avoid prepaid orders! For those who don't know, prepaid orders are orders directly from a stores app/site that gets sent to Shipt. Most of them do not prompt the customer to give a response under the tip section nor do some even give them the option to tip until after delivery. This clearly does not translate well for us. Now when a customer orders through the Shipt app it requires a person to either select a pre tip amount or a "not now" option prior to delivery. If they didn't pre tip it will prompt them to select a tip or "no tip" option along with a rating response after delivery. They will not be able to order or browse the app until they complete those answers. Once I discovered that and cut off prepaid orders entirely I've been 9/10 on receiving tips. Thank me later! Im new to shipt. Thank you for this. What about delivery only orders? Do they tip? Have you found its only straight shop and pay (non prepaid) that tip?

@@davidk7534 delivery only orders are horrible just stay away and stick with shop & deliver orders only. Try to be active at no more than 2 or 3 stores in order to build a good preferred customer base. For a new shopper please keep in mind that communication is key even for the small things. People appreciate that big time and show it in their tips.

That's great and all, but when your market is 90% prepaid, you cannot do this. I just send them a text at drop-off thanking them and asking them to rate (not tip), if they liked the service. Adding that drop-off text improved tips dramatically. Also, Delivery Only orders are amazing in some markets. It highly depends on the store. Rich stores, rich tips. Basic bullshit store, basic bullshit non-tip pay.

@@aguy1883 I definitely can understand that. Every metro is different so it's hard to even give advice sometimes. I did see people on reddit say that they send a link to the final receipt when dropping off a prepaid order which they claim increased tips big time too

Oh another tip - you definitely don’t have to buy thank you cards. You can print made up/DIY cards on word paper and then print/cut them out and then get a cheap stapler to staple them to the bag(s). That’s what I do. They’re personalized with emoji’s and everything lol customers usually really like/appreciate them. It makes me stand out as a shopper and every-time I attach them to customer bags I do get tips. 😊

Right now I just do DoorDash and Uber eats, waiting for my stuff from shipt, and I make the hand written thank you notes, and stick it to their orders with a sticker.

As a fellow Shipt shopper, who only works the Shipt app, I would agree, thank you notes and very communicative texts are 2 things you can do that almost always guarantees you tips! Shipt customers like the personal service and attention. Anytime you do anything out of the ordinary, whether that’s taking the time to be extra friendly and descriptive in your texts; or go above and beyond with suggestions for substitutions. Either way going a little way sometimes can go a long way for you as a shopper in the form of tips lol 👍🏿

Thanks man. Gave me some great ideas as a new Shipt shopper. Done only 11 orders and receive only 3 tips. Been communicating so I’ll try the thank You cards. Do you write your shopper number in the card asking for preferred shopping? Appreciate the video!

You’re welcome. I don’t write my shopper number, the customer will be able to find and request you easily. What I write in the card is in the description.

What state are you in? The guaranteed earnings in California helps a lot! I’ve been doing this for almost a year. The thank you notes really didn’t seem to make a huge difference as far as tipping. It’s definitely more about the communication. I’m up front about telling my customers when I’m working two orders simultaneously. I work nights and I’ve found that they are understanding (as I’m out at night) and appreciate the honesty. Is there a way to insert a personalized message into the app so you don’t have to type it out every time?

Hi, I’m in Florida. I don’t think we have guaranteed earnings here. The lowest you’ll get for a order is $6. But yes, communication does wonders. I don’t think there’s a way to insert personalize text. I just copy and paste from my notes.

Question. What do we write on the “thank you” card? 😆 Also, can we tell customers to select us as their “preferred shopper” if they like our service on the thank you card or the text message?

You probably can say it indirectly. What I say indicates that I would like to shop for them again. The text I send, and what I write is in my description but it’s this here: Hey (customer name), Thank you so much for choosing Shipt. We look forward to providing service for you again! From your shopper, (your name)!

You can use that and add a line saying something like…. if you are please with my service feel free to request me as a preferred shopper for your future orders to be sent to me.

The pack of thank you cards I got came in envelopes., so I just used it and wrote the customer name on it. They were small thank you cards that came in a pack of 8 for $1. Try to find something like that. Don’t want to really spend too much on them. And yes make it visible. If you can’t find the envelopes that’s fine.

Yes, I was thinking about that. Like who gets the order first since they have multiple preferred shoppers. But honestly being a preferred shopper doesn’t really benefit me much because they order when I’m not working. I really only do it weekends.
