I reviewed the Phantom Menace, and went over what I liked and disliked about Episode One. In the end, I really don't think it's that good. follow me on Twitter: / jedwerd_ #Jedwerd #StarWars #ThePhantomMenace
NGL the Phantom menace is my 5th favorite star wars movie. It was the first one i watched as a kid and seeing darth maul made me a double saber fan forever.
My ranking of the Star Wars movies: 1. The Empire Strikes Back 2. A New Hope 3. Revenge of the Sith 4. Return of the Jedi 5. Rogue One 6. Attack of the Clones 7. The Phantom Menace 8. The Force Awakens 9. Solo 10. The Last Jedi 11. The Rise of Skywalker
WHAT IS THE TIMING OF THIS VIDEO literally 30 minutes ago i finished watching the phantom menace, and i was like: huh, this is way better than i remember!
So true. The timing of this video is not good at all. Personally, The Phantom Menace is one of my favorite movies of all time. It literally kicks off the Skywalker saga and is a legendary film to this day.
I’m not going to lie I don’t think this movie is that bad. I enjoyed it for sure. However, I am biased because I’m a huge prequel fan, but still it’s really not that bad
@@pianoforte1720 true, I think that jar jar represents just the gungans while padme being the senator represents the gungans and people, and there is another person we never met who represents the people of Naboo and not the gungans, but that’s just a theory, a Star Wars theory, I miss mat pat
The phantom menace is the best prequel in my opinion. It has the best acting and dialogue out of the three. It doesn't rely on CGI like the other two do, the story is more interesting, it is world building, the music is amazing, and not to mention it has the greatest choreographed fight in all of cinema. Also, Liam Neeson and Ewen McGregor are a great duo, and Qui-Gon is my all time favorite character.
I know it’s your respected opinion so you don’t have to read what I’m about to say I just don’t like your reasonings is all The only ones with good acting were the Jedi and C3p0 I guess/ out the the 3 movies revenge of the sith didn’t relay on CGI compared to phantom menace and attack of the clones/ the phantom menace story isn’t that good since it’s just politics and introducing anakin (and the movie is about no screen time palpatine not anakin that’s crazy💀)/ the weapons and aliens species were the only world building about the movie world building really comes in attack of the clones/ and lastly obi wan was really annoying of an apprentice I’m surprised Qui gon had patience with him
Honestly speaking I don't think the Phantom Menace is a bad movie. It's a good movie and the only criticism I have about this movie is that Maul was not given proper screen time and Jar Jar Binks And I think one of the other reasons some people don't like it is because it's too comical
Honestly i respect your opinon but i don't think that phantom menace is that bad and i think that most people hated cuz jar jar wile we all know it dosent have to be blood movie we all know star wars was a kids before adults Serie remember that many movies and shows that been great and its not a problem that a jake lloyd is jast kid also i wan point out that its not a problem that a character dosent have many lines to be good i don't wan I remind you of i hate sand also i don't think phantom menace is batter then OT movies or or better Revenge of the sith but in my opinon i think its batter then attack of the clone and all sequels movies i don't think its amezing movie but surely not as bad as much as people think anyway thank you for the fun video jedward love you'r videos from iraq and i respect your opinon i have no poroplm with it ❤❤❤
@@JedwerdThe phantom menace isnt bad. Watch Rockotar. He has 2 videos about phantom menace and attack of the clones. I hope you will change your mind.
That Epic Rap Battles of History reference was legit the best thing I have seen in a long time! As a fan of both your amazing channel and ERB I got so excited when the ERB logo showed up in one of your videos! MTFBWY Jedwerd!
Personally id rank the star wars movies like this: 1. Empire 2. Force Awakens 3. Rogue One 4. A New Hope 5. Revenge Of The Sith 6. Solo 7. Return Of The Jedi 8. Rise Of Skywalker 9. Phantom Menace 10. Last Jedi 11. Attack Of The Clones
What’s average about a pod race? A battle in space? Trying to reclaim a palace? Going to war on the ground? Which I’m about to explain the entire plot in one sentence. The Trade federation blockade Naboo to demand higher taxes, and the senate won’t do anything, so it’s up to the Jedi master Qui Gon Jin and his apprentice Obi Wan Kenobi to save the day. That’s the entire plot.
4:08 No most everyone else is certainly not forgettable. Sheev Palpatine, Anakin, Grido, Jar Jar Binks, Yoda, Mace Windu, Newt Gunray, they’re not forgettable characters. They play major parts in the movie when their time comes. The reason you might be forgetting them, is because you’re not paying attention. But each of these characters have a role in the story, whether it be making a deal over ship parts, trying to determine if a young boy is the chosen one, or helping get your new friends an army to take back Naboo matter deeply.
My pros and cons of Phantom Menace: Pros: great worldbuilding, duel of the fates, Maul was a menace and glad he came for Clone Wars, excited for the rerelease, Liam Neeson was compelling in the role of Qui-Gon Cons: pacing is a bit of a mess, they didn't give us Darth Jar Jar (I don't mind Jar Jar. Sure he's cringe at times, but I never hated him; he isn't as bad as Rey but I just see him as a c or d list bc he only had one movie as a major role. I found him sometimes funny, other times annoying. Hell, I find 3PO more annoying, but I don't hate him either. I liked how he proved that he was a Sith, but shame we were robbed) Overall, I'd rate the film a 6 or 7 out of 10. I don't think it's bad, but I don't think it's good either. I'd just say it's fine. That being said, not as bad as the sequels, but still flawed. But in a narrative standpoint, at least it ages better because it has a story leading somewhere. But not as good as the other two prequels in terms of overall quality.
Also, making a villain less three dimensional, makes it easier to side with the protagonists of a story. Only knowing that Darth Maul is a Sith and is a force to be reckoned with still doesn’t make him a bad character. Because otherwise every enemy we ever see B-1 battle droids, Storm trooper would all be bad characters. And as we have seen in many movies that’s not the case. Darth Maul’s character is also more so a pawn or a least a piece in someone else’s game. By the end of the movie they ask whether they killed the master or the apprentice of the Sith as Yoda says “Always two there.” The camera soon pans in front of Palpatine and if you haven’t figured out it’s him. Then you have honestly been paying attention.
8:30 *Cocks revolver* _Go ahead, make my day_ Jar Jar Binks is a Mad Lad. He’s a comic relief character and is clumsy funny. He’s part of the story to relieve tension in certain moments when we need it. He’s crucial to getting the Gungan army to help draw the droid army away from the city so that the heroes can get in. He’s also part of the army and does his fair share of distracting the enemy in a way that actually ends up destroying some battle droids and a tank. I mean when was the last time you saw someone destroy a tank by fumbling with an explosive? And most adults only hate him, because they see him as annoying and not so a menace to the story.
He didn't. Now, don't get me wrong, I don't mind Jar Jar. I find him sometimes funny, other times annoying. Hell, 3PO I find more annoying, but I don't hate him either. He just simply said he prefers Sith Jar Jar over normal Jar Jar.
I think the reason why Maul never spoke was that he was supposed to be an assassin so he had to be sneaky but he was more forward. And I think the prequels were setting up why the republic and the Jedi failed and in the end the Empire and the Sith rose the power.
Alright, your first good point. Yes, Qui Gon Jin was good Jedi. Better than any other on the council and willing to push beyond on the lines of what they were allowed to do. Which was probably due to the Republic restricting the Jedi after the years of war brought on by the Sith in the long ago past. But Qui Gon does these things not because it’s just his duty as a Jedi, but because it’s character. He tries to free not only Anakin, but his mother as well. And something we see later is after he dies. No one bothers to remember Shmee, not even Obi Wan which is sad because it will ultimately come back to haunt Obi Wan.
The phantom menace is an incredible movie in general and in Star wars. It is one of my favorite movies. It kicked off the skywalker saga. To me it has great world building, a great and incredible talented cast, an amazing story, and the characters are just amazing as well. My opinion.
Darth Maul has to be the best in the Phantom Menace, as for Jar Jar I do think he should be a Sith Lord. As for Jake, I think he done alright but he doesn’t deserve anything bad. As for the Padme I agree, she looks the same & I didn’t think no one made a big deal out of it? But still someone should have a younger Padme in the first movie, just so it makes sense. As for the plot, it seems like 🤔 Naboo is under dictatorship of the Trade Federation. But the different worlds are 🤩 outstanding, great video.
Phantom Menace was a good Star Wars movie to me… it’s a 100 times better than all three Sequels movies combined. Dual Of Fates is one of the greatest Saber duals ever. Attack Of The Clones was really good too! Obi Wan vs Jango Fett, battle of Geonosis, Obi Wan, Anakin & Yoda vs Count Dooku, the first movie to introduce us to the Clone Wars… that’s great stuff 💯
hold your horses! the original acter for Darth maul was going to have a big boring monologue but we should be grateful we didn't get that also Micheal Jackson wanted to play jar jar thank God George made sure that didn't happen
I think the thing with episode 1 and 2 is that they are more political movies. They have the task of world building and don’t do much else, besides set up the Star Wars universe back story to the OT. There isn’t adventure, or battles and a lot of the things that are alluded to in the prequels are just that- things talked about on screen and never referenced or shown to us again. But they’re still important and have good writing and plot points to set up the events of episodes 3-6. At least they had constraint plot lines unlike Disney Star Wars.
Me: "Surely it can't be worse than I remember!" (Reads Liam's wig is fake) Me: "HOW MANY OTHER LIES HAVE I BEEN TOLD BY THE COUNCIL???" (PS: Jedwerd, are you seeing the 9-film marathon at select movie theaters on May 3rd?)
There's news out now that Jake Lloyd is still a Star Wars fan and that his life was in fact NOT ruined by this movie and the backlash, but by schizophrenia which was unrelated.
Two Jedi accompanied by a queen discover a child talented in the force, together they seek to free the queens home world from the trade federation. That’s one sentence that declares the plot
Here's the plot in one sentence, I'll be it, it's a long sentence: The trade federation is stopping taxation to Naboo, so our heroes Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Padme Amidala search for a way to stop the greedy trade federation, but find a new apprentice, destined to save the galaxy.
Sorry Jedwerd but hard disagree. Jar Jar is bad sure, and Maul gets not enough screentime for sure (I've always imagined if they had an opening scene all the conspirators like in Julius Caesar, where Palpatine is like intimidating the Trade Federation people and Mas Amedda and some senators along with Maul, so that we can see more Sith and really see some senate corruption instead of just hearing about it) but Phantom Menace has a some unique brightspots beside Qui-gon. We got the podrace (i dont care it is awesome) and the movie has this unique aesthetic to it thats just so nostalgic. Plus the Jedi Council and getting to see the Republic is just amazing
This is why I prefer the Clone Wars TV Show, the two Star Wars movies Revenge of The Sith and Rogue One as the true prequels to set up Star Wars unlike The Phantom Menace and Attack of The Clones.
The fact that Qui-Gon Jinn spent days on Tatooine concocting some amazingly complicated plan to get the parts he needed to fix a ship instead of, oh, I don't know, hiring a smuggler to fly them to Coruscant should tell you how terrible the script and the writing are. It's amazing that Lucas nearly 20 years to come up with a story and screenplay and came up with something so confusing, boring, and senseless.
7:08 Are you saying that it is wooden as it stiff or do you mean it is wooden so that is it hard and firm like a tree? Oh no you’re just saying it’s crap. That moment you just pulled isn’t a bad scene. It’s just Qui Gon giving advice to Obi Wan. It’s a teacher student moment.
To judge it fairly, I like the final lightsaber duel with Qui Gon and obi wan vs maul. However jar jar binks is very annoying and the aliens in the beginning of the film are quite racist. I do think the prequels got gradually better but I still think we have to be realistic and fair. We have to acknowledge problems that we may not like to recognize. I think once episode 3 came around the prequels definitely got better. Personally, revenge of the Sith is one of my favorite movies but I still think movies that a lot of people are nostalgic for can have their fair share of problems. For example, attack of the clones has bad romantic dialogue. Sometimes the only way to respect what you like is to acknowledge its problems. I will say that the prequels did get better with each movie in my opinion and u could say that is a good thing. Even the OT has its problems. Even with all the hate, I think we can still find some enjoyment in the sequels. Pretending that something is perfect doesn’t make it perfect. U can still like the characters in a bad movie or show. The Clone Wars is almost perfect in my opinion. I think it is good objectively and personally. It’s basically just an expansion pack for the prequels. Star Wars fans can be very blinded by nostalgia but I think recognizing problems in media that people love is something that anyone can do. Honestly it doesn’t even matter on what the consensus is of the prequels when the clone wars already exists. I feel like it’s not healthy to just pretend something is a masterpiece because a little bit of criticism can help improve something.
this movie is my favourite star wars movie, FIGHT ME. This movie has everything a good movie needs: drama, comedy, action, lore and jar jar binks :) The pod racing was a great idea, it also has an amazing duel, liam neeson plays in the movie. do I have to say more?
2:29 Eh…that’s more in part to Disney’s hand and their dumb story writing. Because while Qui Gon Jin was a force ghost, he never finished his training George specifically has it explained in the Clone Wars Series. Now if you don’t consider that canon then find, it can still work without it. However, when it comes to Disney, they consider the Clone Wars canon. So having Qui Gon Jin being seen as a force ghost makes no sense. Because according to George Lucas, he was only ever to manifest as a voice not as a full ghost body.
I totally understand if u don’t like the phantom menace but for me it’s just my first ever contact with Star Wars and so still counts to one of my favorites like the whole prequeltrilogie
3:46 I mean…have you seen some of the modern day 14 year old social media posters? It’s certainly more believable now than it was then. But this is not the worst thing about the movie.
7:00 Ok, if you weren’t paying attention (which it seems like you are but fail to understand the *deeper* meaning) let me explain. The bureaucracy in this movie is a very short portion of the entire film. The only point of it is to show how the Senate is not doing its job and taking too long to act in this matter. Similar to how most politicians are these days. Thus it is left up to the Jedi and the Queen to go back to Naboo and stop the trade federation themselves. Saying it is *heavily* bogged down with political blockades, bureaucracy, and legal mumbo jumbo, is not true. The political portions of the Phantom Menace are short and they’re done in a way only to show, the Republic has failed to do anything against the Trade Federation. Even going one step further (into stupidity) to give them a seat in the Senate.
Yeah Darth Maul is not in this movie long. But that doesn’t mean he’s a bad part of this movie. At this point in the movie the only thing we know about the Sith is that they are manipulators. We don’t know the full extent of their physical powers. Sure we know Darth Vader was a Sith. But that’s another movie and not everyone may have watched the OG trilogy. Which you should never *have* to watch another movie to understand the full context of the movie you’re watching. Seeing Darth Maul at the end shows us who the Sith are and how powerful they can be. As well as how dangerous and a force they Jedi have to deal with.
Why would he talk a lot in the movie! Most of his screen time he was FIGHTING! And when he was fighting during the duel of fates why would he talk while fighting two Jedi he had just met.
Now let me explain the problem to you sir, with immediately starting Characters off with amazing powers. If you do not give background on their character, you won’t understand them as much. Making Anakin a 9 year old to start was a wise choice, because we see how he is a boy. He’s optimistic and excited to see the galaxy. He wants to become a Jedi, but doesn’t see the life it will bring and the responsibilities that come with it. Later on, we see how his emotions are affecting him but he’s told to repress them and not worry about the issues on his mind. This slowly leads to Anakin’s downfall in how he perceives the Jedi later on as a young adult and soon turns to the dark side.
7:25 “WHAT?! That is the dumbest claim I have ever heard. People talk in big long sentences. Generally people don’t talk that way?! Podcasts, News Coverage, Speeches. And even when they’re not addressing something. HAVE YOU EVEN BEEN IN A NORMAL CONVERSATION WITH ANOTHER PERSON?! I tell you the people I talk to can go on for nearly hour. And it’s not like I have crazy friends or anything. We just get on a topic, then another, and another, and another. Until we realize we’ve been talking for too long. But long conversations are a normal thing.
Alright, I know this movie ain’t bad. Anyone who says otherwise is just kidding themselves. If you don’t know why this movie is good, I’d recommend watching Anomaly Inc’s video on revenge for f the prequels. There is one where he commentates over Cosmonaut Variety Hour and debates his dumb arguments. Now there are several other videos where he does the same with OG Trilogy fanboys who didn’t like the prequels because it detached itself from the original trilogy. But if you want to understand just for the Phantom Menace or the other two prequels. Then the ones where he commentates over Cosmonaut are the shortest (at least without having to sit through hours and hours)
