I found myself wishing there was another line for "how do I feel about WOTC's parent company, Hasbro?" Answer: hate this company. I answered neutral on WOTC. I actually like them and think most of these issues are from Hasbro and the Hasbro staff that have been assigned to WOTC. Thanks for all you do, Bob 👍

Keep in mind that it is Wotc leadership who took over Hasbro and is running it into the ground. At watc there has been a long standing division between their leadership team (C-suite, marketing, accounting) and their individual property teams (rules designers, artists, writers for individual games). I think that the property teams for D&D and MTG do some fun and awesome work. Long legacies of having interesting ideas even when they aren't super successful ones. But the leadership team... oh man... they have gotten flack for decades for making poor decisions that the individual game teams manage to rescue. When they were absorbed by hasbro, and the watc leadership moved up to hasbro leadership is when everything started becoming a financial and PR nightmare. I mean, hasbro is good at burning cash, which is why they had a change in leadership in the first place. But the canceling and snubbing of profitable partnerships, over-paying for dndbeyond with massive amounts of debt which is now coming up on a renegotiation to current higher rates... I mean... they may have killed the company 2 years ago, and it is just taking time for it to all unfold and spin down. It's D&Ds 50th anniversary, and it feels more like a memorial than a celebration.

That is a very good point. I am now not liking either one at the moment. But I have a very bad taste in my mouth because of how Hasbro is handling the whole RPG. WotC got butcherer, and WotC is not what it used to be

WOTC is Hasbro. News flash! You don't need either to play D&D.

That's ridiculous. WoTC needs absolutely no help whatsoever from their parent company to sabotage D&D. They're doing just fine on their own.

I've almost zero doubt.

Although Pathfinder and Starfinder are more crunchy than I prefer, I have to agree that their starter sets are the best.

The Pathfinder Beginner box is top notch, but it is also nearly 4x the price. $45 can be a barrier for some

Probably the try to make it to look good and rendime, at the same time they want collect data to see how can fix or see how bad they are. And for me i have i turn the page and they will never see me again or my friend.

I love D&D, I have played D&D for thirty years. I think the 5th edition, 3 core books are mechanical sound and well written. However the company sucks. Now I am playing Shadowdark Rpg. Thanks

D&D has ALWAYS been "the Man" and hated. This has been true since the days of TSR. When they used to go to GenCon and pick-up their ENnie Awards, the music their staff chose for their acceptance was the Imperial March.

@@DavidJWGibson I remember that. I grew to appreciate at them since those days but this last year or two is something completely different. Despite TSRs failures, Wotc & Hasbro has made us wish for those days.

This was what I was going to recommend too was Dragonbane Core set. It is a great value of items, fun times around a table, simple to learn game, and who doesn't want to use a pig as an improvised weapon.

Totally second this. The Dragonbane boxed set is the whole game and a starter set as well! And top notch quality for the price.

Thirded. Dragonbane is one of the best designed rpgs I've seen, and the value you get for the product is amazing.

And when they no longer like the responses, they closed the survey.

This seems less like something you do to get a feel of the general public's opinion, and more something you start doing annually to judge a change in direction. "x% of respondants like our game" is meaningless with no context. "x% more of our core, survey-taking audience have told their friends to try our products than was the case a year ago" justifies making more content like what you recently put out.

5e was inspired, they managed to distill a version that felt like earlier editions, but greatly streamlined the game. Some of their campaign books are quite good, but when it comes to supplements it's not been a rousing success as they can't find the right formula and before you claim that some edition did it better, they all had major issues, the AD&D era sets didn't sell enough, the 3e era stuff was 5% good and 95% junk and the best 5e stuff is some third party supplement that at the end of the day would have made a great stand-alone game with bespoke rules.

I was playing MtG since Saviors of Kamigawa. I have dropped it cold turkey when they announced their Rings of Power set. I couldn't stand how they decided to butcher the lore of what's basically the godfather of all modern fantasy.

When a company encourages me to actively spite them, I think "negative responses on a survey" isn't too much to do.

The correct pronunciation is gif.

Surprisingly, the person who invented the format claims gif should be pronounced with the soft g, but until we put "jifts" under the tree at Christmas, I'll go with the hard g for gif.

They've made pdf versions of previous editions available on DM's Guild...

I'm pretty sure they are referring to brand and not game expect for question 4 which implies 5e.

@@BobWorldBuilder I think it would be really interesting if they could somehow filter out the responses based upon the editions people preferred. I bet there would be some very contrasting results.

Wizards doesn't want you to look into old DnD editions because they don't make money off of old editions. That's part of why they're trying to remove "5e" or "5th Edition" from modern DnD; they don't want any implication that anything came before them, and they don't want new players to think they can't get into DnD 5th Edition when they haven't played 1-4 (which is a faulty line of reasoning but Wizards does assume new players are idiots who need to be hand-held and babied, so)

I checked it out. It seemed like a pretty cool setting. However it didn't seem anything like a starter set and frankly it didn't seem rules light at all. I just don't dig giant rule books anymore. I don't have the time for it. I also didn't like the roll under mechanics. What was it you like about it?

@@NemoOhd20It's not a starter set, it's the full game. The rule book is just over 100 pages, which is a lot less than many fantasy RPGs, but isn't exactly rules-light, more rules-medium... The advantages of the roll under mechanic are that you're never having to do mental arithmatic during the game, and you always know what you need to roll to succeed. You just look at the number on your character sheet and roll equal to or less than that number.

it's a fair bit less heavy than it first looks, most of the pages of the rulebook are lists of monsters, spells, equipment, etc. But yes, technically it's not a starter set in the traditional sense (i'd argue it still fulfils the same role though), but if the mechanics don't appeal then, totally fair!

The Dragonbane box set is what I was going to recommend, too. It is an excellent system and I have really enjoyed playing it. I think the reason more people might see it as confusing and or complicated is because it is more a skill based system. I mean for combat you roll the skill for the weapon you are using. Example I use my axe and my skill for that is a 16. That means as long as I roll a 16 or lower I hit with the attack. I roll damage and the monsters armor will reduce some of that damage. There are more complex things you can do in combat but that is the basics really. And yes I could see how a roll low system would not be for everyone but it is a lot of fun.

the fact people still pronounce this wrong is crazy. GIF = Graphic Interchange Format. It's pronounced G-RAPHIC not JRAPHIC, lol

​@ShaggytheLaze Is it wrong, though? The creator of the format pronounces it Jif. GIF makes more sense so that's what I use, but I find it funny how something like this debate came about despite evidence that us hard G'ers are most likely the wrong ones on this. Language is funny :-)
