The PO-20 Sounds are Different than Other PO's!
Today I'm going to show you how the PO-20 Arcade handles it's sounds very differently from other Pocket Operators. While it might seem limiting on the surface, the increased polyphony of the Arcade can really open up some interesting songwriting options! Enjoy the video :)

I love more people showcasing the PO-20. This is hands down my favorite PO. The chord feature makes quick song ideas a reality in no time! Plus, without your lead notes (that don't change with the chord) you can change your whole song just by trying new chord progressions (since the follow sounds change as well). At times I would use the PO-12 Rhythm for drums to go with it, but the drum sounds on it are really just fine! My only complaint (and why I was hesitant to buy one for a long time) is the chiptune sounds. The bass sounds great and some of the sounds are decent, but I would love a PO that had all these features with more mature sounds like on the PO-28 Robot. I really was hoping for a PO-3x that would essentially be a PO-20 with better sounds. And I am still on the lookout for a low cost, portable device that has these features.

I personally love the chiptune sounds, but I definitely see your point. I can't believe they haven't released a newer PO with the same workflow as the Arcade yet!

@@FreeBeat Does the OP-Z have any of those features? I always hear that the OP-Z is "every PO wrapped up in 1 package", but it's so expensive I have not really taken the time to look into the specific features.

Another great tutorial of yours for the PO 20! You obviously have great insight into these PO devices but pass on your knowledge in a way that is easy to understand and also fun to watch. Moreover, you always make your explanations comprehensive, clear and concise, which is rather refreshing and always appreciated. Many thanks again and please keep up the good work.

Not sure how many PO-20 owners are on here. Anyone want to share some of their favorite chord progressions to use on it? Aside from the many combinations of Am/F/G/C (I know...boring, but they always work :) ), I like: Am-Am-G-G-F-F-Esus-E (or Em instead of the Esus). The SUS (or minor) to major resolve sounds awesome though it quickly gets drowned out once you add other sounds.

I tend to pick starting points that don't sound as "good" and work from there!

That bit about using sound 8 for the snare is a big mood. The PO-28 only has one knob you can use for it's snare and it's a great snare. The PO-20 has two knobs for its sound 3 snare and all it can do is sound like hot garbage. No clue why TE thought that was an acceptable snare sound for a PO with such a heavy emphasis on making backing tracks. Speaking of sound 8, though, it's really annoying that the sound effects loop twice on knob A instead of each sound having one window that's twice as wide. Makes it a real pain to select the exact sound you want from it, though thankfully that beautiful sound 8 snare is positioned at 0 and 50, making it far easier to access than the open hi-hat/cymbal at 40 and 90.

I have the opposite problem! Heh. I have a PO-33 that I almost NEVER use even though I know it's an amazing PO. Because of the level of simplicity of the early model POs, I just feel more comfortable with them. I need to use my PO-33 and PO-35 more because they sound amazing.

I've had the arcade for a few months. What it gains in versatility, it loses in how long it takes to make a song. The chord capacity makes it a lot more musical in some ways than other POs (I also have 12 and 35), at least as we think about traditional chord progressions. That's why I wanted it. But my excitement of putting together whole songs was tempered by the work it takes to tune each note of the melody (over several patterns) and then sting together a gazillion patterns + the chords. And, the live performance options are meh compared to the others I have. The best in my opinion are the low and high pass filters. If TE were to build on the arcade, I'd love to see some more sophisticated sounds than chip tunes - maybe using samples. That would make it worth it for me to put in the work to create a song on it.
@rlynker
@rlynker 3 года назад
You hit the nail on the head here. There is a level of complication for lead notes. I usually have to write it down first and then set the notes or I experiment with the notes 1 pattern at a time. The PO-20 is perfect for making your chord base using just the sounds that change. Then you can play around with different chord progressions without changing anything. I think if you are into chaining POs together, you could do melody (and optionally drums) with other POs. And I, too, would LOVE to see an updated version of the Arcade from TE. I was hoping a new PO-3x model would come out using the chord features with updated sounds and features.
@FreeBeat
@FreeBeat 3 года назад
I actually think it's almost faster to sequence on, but only if you know the exact notes you want in your melody. It's definitely not a good PO for improvisational jamming. Thanks for watching!
@Mnnvint
@Mnnvint 2 года назад
I started with the PO-20, and I was a bit disappointed in the other way. I was surprised the effects "stuck" in the PO-16, even when edit isn't active, and how they have to be added during play and can't be added per note while you enter it. PO-20 has a cool palette of chip sounds, but of course on a real fully programmable chip you can do infinitely more, even on the weaker 8-bit music chips. There are also things on the PO-20 which 8-bit chips didn't have, like reverb (it had to be faked in expensive and limited ways!). PO-20 is good for "chippy" effects but keep in mind chip music is way more than that :)
@phyzzx
@phyzzx Год назад
@@Mnnvint If they put all the POs into a single or even two units with just a few small upgrades I'd probably buy them just so I can have all of what each individual PO is missing together and maybe move away from battery ONLY, sigh. A man can dream.

Sadly you can't change the pattern length :( What to you mean by trigger sounds? If you mean just playing them, you can't really on the Arcade. They have to be sequenced (at least the melodic sounds).
