I was recently in the hospital for six months. I had six surgeries including amputation of my leg. This song was part of what kept me motivated to get better. It would not be a stretch to say The Pointer Sisters helped to save my life.
The other one is its my favorite to get everyone pumped My mind is ready, my heart's on fire I'm gonna push it over the wire Perfect timing, tight as a drum The final battle's already won I'm taking hold of every moment Given strength by the breath of life I'm gonna stake my claim I fight to survive Kumite Kumite Kumite Kumite Kumite Kumite Kumite Kumite Kumite Kumite Kumite Kumite Kumite I've worked hard every night and day So I'm prepared to make my way Mind and body ar a perfect team Now's my chance to live my dream I'm taking hold of every moment Given strength by the breath of life I'm gonna stake my claim I fight to survive Source: Musixmatch Songwriters: Paul F. Yes indeed, The Pointer Sisters should be/ should have been, if not, in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame!!!!!!🙏🏾💕👍🏾👏🏾🙏🏾✌🏾RIP, June, Bonnie, and Anita. My condolences to Ruth and the Pointer family 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾!!!!!!
Anita was fantastic here -- this has to be the best performance of "Yes We Can Can" I've seen them do. What a woman -- I hope she knew how very loved she was.
If you've never REALLY listened to the lyrics of this song..... So befitting in the times that we're living in. Thought-provoking and inspiring indeed.
The original 1973 lp version remains my Favorite song & 1975's HOW LONG (betcha' gotta chick on the side) is my 2nd BEST song of POINTER SISTERS catalog. DM
GREAT GOSH ALMIGHTY!! Whew these ladies/ sisters are BAD!! Four pure, poised, extremely talented singers. These ladies are the REAL DEAL. Whew, the gentleman on the drums is KILLER. He’s in his own zone. Pure talent. Love their style. Clothes, 💄 makeup, hair, shoes 👠, accessories. EVERYTHING!! Simply phenomenal. I love them. They don’t make them like that anymore.🙌 🤩
Yes, The Pointer Sisters were The real deal. Can sing any genre from country, jazz, scat, rhythm, and Blues to Pop! Remain on key&on their note with harmonies blended together to sound like one voice!🤎🤎🤎🤎they definitely broke the mold and sadly music after their generation shouldn't even be called music!Rip June, Bonnie and now Anita 😔😪💔🥀🕊🩶
@@phillycheez6288 My dad used to always comment on how they could stay on key even after scatting. They would scat all over the place and come right back to the key they started from. Incredible!
It blows my mind how great they were live. What a powerful performance. I come back to watch this video every few months and it always gives me a smile and a feeling of hope. RIP Anita. Thank you for all the great 🎶
Gaylord Birch was the secret ingredient on the record. He died in '96 so it's wonderful to see him in action in this dazzling performance. God, I knew they were great, but I didn't know they were THIS great! I wish I'd seen them live! RIP Bonnie! So sad to see u leave us.
Anita was the whole package... powerful and sensitive voice, beautiful with great stage presence, good writer and so full of that magnificent energy that few people possess.
I'm glad to see it, wow! Always loved the Pointer Sisters & that drum solo -- well, never saw this video before; it's a double blessing! Didn't realize 2 of the Sisters had passed.
That man sure could play. He was truly a pro and loved puttin' on the show. But what I liked best was his kit. You can get enough out of a small kit if you know how to play. This guy sure 'nough did. I was lucky to know similar musicians like him.
RIP Anita. You and your sisters have been an inspiration to generations. Thank you for helping us all along on our journey and I hope the next leg of yours is full of beauty and joy
It's really a part of a lot of our lives in the 70s' Nobody had done what the Pointer Sisters did. Way before their 80's records, this was the group making history.
Well, I was born in Norway in 1980, so I will have to take your word for that, but I'm happy to do it, because that is one of the most plausible statements I've ever read on the internet.
I loved the Pointer Sisters from the time they emerged on the scene. Four Black women that exuded beauty, style and class. The best harmonies and their throwback to the roaring 20’s. They dared to be different and that’s what set them apart. Trendsetters, unique in every way. RIP Anita Pointer🌹
I remember the Pointer Sisters very well. I also grew up in Oakland and saw a lot of bands in the Bay Area in the late 60's and early 70's. One place I went to a lot was the Berkeley Community Theatre - I saw many, many great people and bands there. One band was the Elvin Bishop Group. They supported a lot for things like John Lee Hooker, Van Morrison and Ike and Tina Turner etc. One time I went to the loo between the shows and saw the Pointer Sisters after their set sitting in the lobby. I walked over and told them how much I liked them - this was probably about 1970 - they were so gracious and sweet and chatted to me for awhile. I will never forget them.
@David Holiday Hey homeboy, I was also born and raised in Oakland, California!! Attended Oakland Technical High School.."AKA" Tech!! I grew up listening and truly loving "The Pointer Sisters" No group of female singers like them..PeriodT
Well done! Anita Pointer, thanks for sharing your voice and talent during a time we needed reinforcement to believe in ourselves. I eluded to the sermon you ( Pointer Sisters) gave in the film " Car Wash. "
This was indeed a very powerful performance by all four of the Pointer Sisters. Their talent enabled them to engage their audience. Now from listening to this live performance of "Yes We Can Can," I can hear the song's message of both the realization of chaotic times as well as the hope that if people put aside their differences, they could get along. Rest in peace, Bonnie and June Pointer.
This song is almost 50 years old, and still we're not there. Fifty. Apparently I was 12 when this song came out and I thought we were getting there. Dammit. How many more lifetimes?
PS: Forgot to mention that I hadn't heard this song in many years and finally heard and understood the lyrics!!! That was the main reason I wrote. Beautiful song and message.
Their 1st and 2nd albums for BLUE THUMB contain vocalese tracks that are in the same league as the greats of late 50s early 60s Lambert ,Hendricks and Ross ..and THE DOUBLE SIX OF PARIS
RIP Anita... Now's the time for all good men To get together with one another We got to iron out our problems And iron out our quarrels And try to live as brothers And try to find peace within Without stepping on one another And do respect the women of the world Remember, you all had mothers We got to make this land a better land Than the world in which we live And we got to help each man be a better man With the kindness that we give I know we can make it I know darn well, we can work it out Oh, yes, we can, I know we can, can Yes, we can, can, why can't we? If we wanna, yes, we can, can
My god these girls were GREAT! Hot, sassy and just plain wonderful entertainers. Love this performance and the backing musicians were fantastic. Glad we have this as a record of how special they were. We were lucky to have the Pointer Sisters. So So talented .
Written by the indomitable Allen Toussaint!! I used to dance and sing this song as a teenager!!! Still do! Rest in peace Allen and the lovely Pointer Sisters! This is so relevant to today and timeless and inspiring!!!!
SPECTACULAR! These Dynamic Powerful Women Of Soul & Song Have Never Received Their Respect & Rewards In The Horrible Music Industry. Salute Queens! RIP June & Bonnie Pointer 🙏🏿👑👑🌠⭐
Amazing, anyone that has ever seen the Pointer Sisters live, know they are the truth. Happy to have seen them at their peak. That song, written by New Orleans genius Allen Toussaint, put them on the map. And as a side note, provided a catchy slogan for a certain president. (I think y'all know) Yeah, and like most of us dudes in high, at the time, had major crushes on them sisters. Thank you Pointer Sisters for providing real music for of us, that came of age during the seventies.🎉
I'm drawn here today because I just learned of Anita's death. Will miss her talent, beauty, and musical contributions to the well-being and enjoyment for us grateful souls remaining.
i can't describe how funky these sisters and this killer live version of a wonderful allen toussant song is , these incredibly talented sisters will always be one of favorite vocal groups ever RIP ANITA , JUNE , and BONNIE .
A social message still, maybe even more relevant today. Holy hell, these ladies were something. If only I wasn't like five years old at the time. To be there.
Pointer Sisters,...on fire,..Ruth, [you] all represent a moment of time in my early days,...Hall of Fame, wake up! My favorite song, "Yes, you can",.. reminiscent of: another family group: Staples: "I'll take you there",...I said it first,..."Fire, Slow hand",... "for all the ones we lost, we will find them in our hearts",... you were therefore, you are", June, Bonnie, and Anita (Jade)~ Ruth,..Sisters, forever!
June was such a beautiful soul, and so down to earth, and kindhearted. Her and Anita were the most humble, gracious ladies. Ruth was always quite fierce, and, well, let's just say that Bonnie felt the need to steal my cigarettes one night, but she cool. God rest her and June's souls.
amazing..genetics + environment...imagine them as little kidz growing up in the same house...how many joyful hours of just being sisters....led 2 this..unbelievable career.....
