Paul is the only one I take seriously as, like, a cool villain who needs to get his ass kicked so he gets proven wrong thematically. Gladion is fun for being a serious edgy boi who only shows up when the rest of the anime is taking a left turn into goofytown (the litten episode notwithstanding), it just turns him into the straight man while everyone else is loosing their minds. The rest of them are kinda chucklefucks. Even Gary was more fun for his over-the-top personality than for, like, being an interesting rival.

All the rivals in the anime have had a rivalry against the protagonists for some reason: Gary vs Ash: because he felt humiliated when he tied against Ash trying to catch a pokeball. (after losing to Ash he started to get along with him) Harley vs May: because May reminded him of a girl who made him cry in daycare. Paul vs Ash: because Ash reminded him of his brother, whom he considers a bad role model. (after losing to Ash he started to get along with him) Conway vs Ash: because he was secretly in love with Dawn but she got along better with Ash than with him. Ursula vs Dawn: because she got jealous when Dawn won a pokemon contest. Trip vs Ash: because He believes that people from other regions get too much attention for having Pokémon that there are not in Unova and Ash has a Pikachu.(after losing to Ash he started to get along with him) Burgundy vs Cilian: because After losing against Cilian, Cilian made a comment that offended her and she set out to get revenge by being better than him. Georgia vs Iris: because After she and her Pokémon lost a battle, she did not want to lose against dragon-type Pokémon again and had heard that Iris aspired to be a dragon master. Miette vs Serena: because she had a crush on Ash just like Serena and had a secret rivalry against her over Ash. Guzman vs professor Kukui and Ash. because He envied Kukui for being better than him and Ash reminded him of Kukui. (after losing to Ash he started to get along with him) Those are all the rivals that there have been in the anime, the rest of the coaches except the bad teams have been friends of the protagonists.

In Fire emblem descendants Paul is so far the only pokemon anime rival to appear in the series. Reggie only appeared in a flashback since he was angry at his brother that he bought one ticket last week from Chow, the root farmer, and suggest his brother to go to the continent of Enualon where Medival villages meets Modern technology and forced him into the plane and went there. Paul is going to the city of Technio. In original concept art Paul was originally gonna be the descendant of Soren, but instead they changed it to be Vander's descendant.

1:04 is my favorite moment. Got to love Paul just wanting a battle with Ash, and having absolutely no tolerance for any interruptions. Not giving Team Rocket ANY moments, which Ash should do more off, attack them when their gaurd is down (they are Pokemon thieves, they don't deserve any mercy). Especially since the battle looks like their second battle. Considering how the first battle was a tie, Paul wants to prove he is better than Ash as fast as he can
