There are Godot games on steam already, which wasn't the case a year or two back ! Dome Keeper, Cassette Beasts, Halls of Torment, Brotato... It's a start !

The one thing Godot has going for it, is at how easy it is to use. You can get up and running in minutes. You can stick a camera in a scene and it works. Just be prepared for Godot to totally brick your project with invalid UUID's; or see a bunch of red error messages, just because you typed or did some other basic thing. Also, be prepared to reinvent the wheel.

The GDScript stat is even more impressive when you realize how many Godot devs use C# or other languages with the engine.

It's interesting seeing the growth of Godot, am definitely tempted by the smaller footprint vs say Unity or Unreal. It seems like its path is on a similar trajectory to Blender, where it's really now hit the mainstream, and hopefully, like Blender will start seeing job postings and robust support for porting to consoles, mobile and the up-and-coming vr/ar dev.

If you looking for job in game development, dont' write on what game engine you working, be more focused on elements Scripting (if you use c# then you can write in unity and godot, gdscript is not bad, similar to python, if you have efforts you can make scripts for blender to improve worklfow). Animation (everywhere is similar, just making animation lib and some kind of blending tool). So you have guys idea how to write CV. And of course portfolio is important.

last time i checked unity had more than 1 million of users.... if that is 6% then we can estimate unreal has half of that, and godot 1/3... of course that is an extrapolation of data, that sample bases only take into account the intersection of unity, godot, unreal users and stack overflow users who voted on that pool... but if we collect more data like that we can get an good estimation of the real number

Could be a decent estimate, although like you said this is only stack Overflow uses.. which although meaningful, probably isn’t a good representation of game devs. I’m also a bit skeptical that this is just a post 4.0 spike, but more data will be need to see trends. Cheers!

I think the number is much smaller probably 5k dedicated core users with probably as many as 10-60k casual users.

I really dislike GDQuest. Makes Godot MUCH harder to learn when it is supposed to be easy. Which is why I never watch GDQuest and watch Heartbeast instead.

Godot has a lot of hype around it but after a few years of working with is the reality is this engine is a mess. I am slowly migrating towards Defold or other engines. I predict Godot might never see a Godot 5,6... version as it might end up being forked into a new more open source project with a better leadership because the official team is pushing Godot into a commercial engine. I could be wrong and remains to be seen..
