This recreation of the original song is pretty amazing all these years later. It is such a huge song for the Pretenders and Chrissie Hynde. She wrote this originally for the drug overdose of her lead guitarist and best friend Honeyman-Scott but in the end, it was also for the death of founding bassist Pete Fandom who died of another drug overdose 2 months later. So, this song was for both dead band members and if you listen to the lyrics closely you can recognize "back on the chain gang" is actually an allusion to the reminder (her memory) of their deaths. This ended up their biggest hit in the USA hitting #5 in the billboard top 200. As sad as the song's topic is it is truly a classic tune.
She should have kept Marr - the work they did on the two songs when he was in the band - was better than 96 percent what she made later. She could never find a replacement for Honeyman Scott and Marr would have been perfect.
