Holmes explains that he may be a bachelor, but he has been living with another bachelor for the last five years. Five very happy years. (From the 1970 film, The Private Life Of Sherlock Holmes.)
When I heard "It is heavily implied that Sherlock is gay in Private Life of Sherlock Holmes", I didn't think that he would just straight up say "I'M IN LOVE WITH WATSON, AND I'M JUST AS GAY AS TCHAIKOVSKY" Also for me, as a Russian person, is such a delight to hear thus excellent Russian speech. Hollywood could never.
Tamara Toumanova was born in Russia but moved to France as a child. She grew up in a totally Russian-speaking environment, including her main ballet teacher, Olga Preobrajenska, who was one of the great prima ballerinas of the Imperial Ballet in St. Petersburg.
Ehh.. you'd have to watch the movie. Sherlock kind of just makes this up to get out of this situation, and Watson gets REALLY upset over it because it's a lie that could hurt his career. They're not really meant to be gay, but they definitely do act like an old married couple throughout the movie. But, then, one can't stop anyone else from interpreting things as they like ;)
when I heard that this was going to be gay I expected bbc sherlock gay not "yeah me and Watson been living together for five happy years being gay" kind of gay
@@Romance_dream_ the grace of fiction is that, if it has not been explained in the smallest detail so as not to leave anyone in doubt, then everyone can interpret it as see fit. So, there is no "more correct here", it's just a matter of interpretation of the scene. You see it as a funny ruse for comic relief. The other person as a true and obvious confession of love. There is no problem for me to see it that way. The most important thing is to respect the opinion of others without prejudice, even if this opinion is not in line with yours.
no when he says "picturesque" i thought he meant like... Imagery? My mind was in a dirty place an i was imagining that Sherlock meant "cup of tea" was like innuendo bc you put your mouth on a cup of tea... get it? idk i might just have a dirty mind
Even more than Sherlock being explicitly gay in this version I love the fact that Mark Gatiss has stated times and times again that this film was one of their biggest inspirations for their adaptation of Sherlock! :D
Karrie Dreammind I am of the mind that the "gayness" was just a red herring. Holmes was asexual at the very least. Be that as it may it is noted that the only woman he ever felt any kind of attraction to was Irene Adler. I really wish people would stop trying to make Holmes into something he was not. This notion of Holmes' sexuality takes away from the stories and it is maddening and irrelevant.
@@gwenking7629 Oh do tell, my dear Gwen King, in what way does it take away from the story? I find it very interesting- Just a dash of flavour text, much like having a personality or a writing style. But alas perhaps you can't find it in yourself to enjoy a tasteful bit of personality, perhaps because you lack one yourself. Good day!
I really liked Robert Stephens as Sherlock in this.. not so sure about the guy playing Watson, but the film in general was very funny! Makes me wish there were more of them
OMG I think the end when he goes out the door inspired on the 1st episode of Sherlock when he says the names Sherlock Holmes and winks and goes out of the door!
Robert Stephens is as great a Sherlock as Rathbone, Brett and Cumberbatch, despite only one outing. I'd love to see the famous missing scenes from this underrated movie one day.
The most Lubitsch-influenced of all Billy Wilder's films. He was a great fan of Lubitsch and it sure shows in the dialogue. - Madame Petrova is now 38. - She doesn't look 38. - That's because she's 49 ! Typical Lubitsch ! ;)
Actually in Russian that word means simply "homosexual". Interestingly in very archaic Czech this word also meant "homosexual" and only later it shifted to the more accurate meaning that it has in English.
Amelie Mileva babe, it's fine. It is all going to be okay. Take a consistent diet of fanart, fanfiction and fan podcasts that bemoan the death of Johnlock. It is what I do.
"НаЛеЙтЕ ВоДкИ и ОбЪяСнИтЕ еМу, В ЧёМ дЕлО"😂😂😂 "За ЗдОрОвЬе"😂😂😂 "СКАЖИТЕ ЕМУ, ЧТО Я ОЧЕНЬ ДОВОЛЬНА ЭТИМ РЕШЕНИЕМ"😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 можно отметить, что у неё не такой уж и сильный акцент🤔
I love the way Holmes chokes on the drink and how his voice cracks over “surely there are other men?!” 😅 GET MY MAN OUT OF THERE, LOL. I like how the moment he realizes a dad isn’t actively missing he immediately gives the man a side eye and grimace, probably wondering where the hell this is about to go. I find the Tchaikovsky thing highly amusing, and the various famous people they went to. Sherlock is probably thinking “god, please don’t let this lead to me xD” I am wondering HOW this movie got made in the 70’s holy moly. Sherlock’s smile after he says “Tchaikovsky is not an isolated case” is the very definition of :3
@@alreeniahiddenblade488 Yeah, I think it was pretty clear, I particually loved the "There *have* been woman in your life, right Holmes?" scene, it was heartbreaking when Sherlock just stood there with a sad smile and closed the door :(
@bugeyedmonster2 I know, I'm an Oscar Wilde fanboy... that's why it's so amusing. Note that pederasty refers only to adolescents, so I'm not sure that the term "little" is an accurate descriptor.
@Jokaanan Hey! Oscar Wilde! Like his plays too! And I think most modern folks don't think of the Greek system of pederasty. Not sure about the Victorians. Yeah, adolescent boys would only be 'little' if they hadn't hit puberty yet.
Brilliant scene! I think a lot of people are missing the point. Sherlock is asexual but can't find a polite way to turn the lady down so he does some quick thinking. I REALLY have to watch the movie now though, it looks hilarious!
I don't think they are missing the point by assuming Sherlock is gay in this interpretation and if you take the word of god (i.e the director) then Sherlock IS gay in this film. As it is, however, it's clear that Sherlock is very much Not Straight and whether it be he is asexual or gay is down to personal preference and besides one can be asexual and still possess romantic attraction for the same sex.
I dont get why people convince for this version Holmes was gay. Because Holmes just use Watson for excuse from this conversation. Holmes found the love of his life in this story and she was dead. This like a gay joke.
Benedict Voltaire ; Cats and kids, get if the internet and go play outside....Ouuups, corona could be outside ok you could stay here AND remain *“not heard”.*
