Thank you Chioma, this topic is deep even for those of us that are still here in our home country Nigeria. Let me site an example, my 5 year old daughter came to me to tell me that she likes a boy in school. I almost freaked out but then caught myself in the middle and remembered that I was in grade 3 the first time I liked a boy and I had no one to talk to. I had to make a choice right there to make my daughter my friend while still guiding her in the appropriate way or making her stop telling me things. I must say that it's not easy but we have to try. Till date I find it difficult to tell my mum personal things about myself and I don't want that for my daughter so I have to do the work. Learn and unlearn certain things. In all, may God continue to help us.

I am glad more and more people are approaching parenting differently.❤

For some of us who have lost our parents when I watch your videos it seems you can talk some sense into our head.

Social media especially has empowered everyone even children. We underestimate it at our own peril. However, there’s no need to be uptight about conservative ‘values’ because it’s not perfect either. Parents need to stay ahead of their kids. But the problem is African parents in the west are mostly about work for survival and still want obedient kids. You can’t have both.

Thank you Chioma for this, I found your experiences and explanation fascinating. I'm an Australian born of anglo heritage. my parents are in there 90 now and my children are in year 4 & 5, both my wife and myself have been raised in a very conservative environment. I went to school here I was disciplined similarly to what you described here 35 years ago. id say both of us struggled when we went to work or uni for the first time and was confronted with let say alternative value system to how either of us had faced before. and then again when we entered the work force. it is one thing for us to come to terms with a society shift that is different to how we were raised it is another to bring children into this, especially when the tools you inherited are not adequate. I'm not criticising our parents, just saying it was so vastly different to how things are now that and I felt inadequate to cope. I have adjusted and managed to keep what is good and useful and push aside the discipline/critisism style that is out of touch and can see now to be damaging to my children's development. I can not imagine how much more so if this was also a culture shift as well. and sorry for my long ramblings. it is so enlightening to see our culture from somebody else's experience and explanation.

Oh, I didn't see it as a ramble at all. I enjoyed your insight and it is appreciated. Puts things into perspective as to how things change across generations even within the same socio-cultural systems. Thank you.

The school curriculum affects the children from early childhood. I would home school my children or let other join other home schoolers. Nz children Christian school helps a bit. Parents should continue with their own parenting style but the casualness of the country can take its toll. Not easy beware. Have strategies in place before thinking of immigrating.
