In the sport of Jiu Jitsu and ADCC leg locks and heel hooks are a huge part. In MMA and the UFC however this is not the case. Today we discuss how BJJ leg locks can work in the UFC

@@Exiecutioner sure but some leg locks like heel hooks tend to be banned from sambo competitions. There’s a reason many people in the grappling community knew khabibs team would not win against pure grapplers. Sambo just has a different rule set not to say sambo guys can’t perform heel hooks it’s just that in some comps you will see heel hooks toe holds etc banned in sambo . Similar to reaps being illegal depending on the division and competition in BJJ.

@@jayluis189 yeah and that doesn’t bother me to say lol because there’s a different ruleset. I’m not going to lie or act like pure wrestlers or pure BJJ guys beat combat sambo guys in MMA . But yes they likely lose in another sport . And actually in some grappling competitions they ban certain techniques to give sambo and wrestlers a more fair advantage because in their sport the leg lock techniques aren’t trained as often. MMA organizations ban certain techniques and have rules like the grounded opponent rule in the UFC or cage grabs. Even time limits factor into how fighters approach a fight. I’m unsure why people say but what about MMA? If we are discussing grapplers course they lose in MMA. But to pretend most MMA fighters have world class technique in everything is silly - their wrestling, BJJ, and striking works great within MMA. It’s almost like people would never want to say khabib could lose in a pure wrestling match against anyone and if he does the reply being “well in MMA…” yeah of course in MMA but that’s another sport

I agree. He was still a purple belt when he entered the UFC. A very very GOOD purple belt, and his BJJ developed in a combat style, not a sport style. He is so good. @@DSP-gh5ei nah I disagree. Burns does not have better BJJ than Charles. He's good too but you cannot compete with a guy that has the most subs in UFC history. Charles has great BJJ from top or bottom. Burns is more a top player only. So was Jacare. He'd call someone into his guard, like Yoel, and then lay there and just get beat up. Charles is DANGEROUS anywhere on the ground.
@DSP-gh5ei
@DSP-gh5ei 7 месяцев назад
@DM-sy4hg Pretty much proving what I said, Charles is the better submission artist. Burns is the best at BJJ in mma as he is a well rounded grappler, even khamzat chimaev could not control him on the ground and had to stand. Charles problem is he can't do this, he can only submit people and that's why he loses to people like Islam that can control the fight positionally. Bjj is not the art of just submissions.

A very helpful addendum to this video is one called "Leg Locks Ain't Real in MMA" under the channel MMA Stories (the video title is a joke FYI). The video in question is essentially a case study for Round 1 of the fight between Kevin Lee & Charles Oliveira, where Do Bronx used many of the leg entanglements Che touches on here in order to nullify Lee's top game. Despite being on his back for the vast majority of the round, Charles played a lot of SLX guard and outside ashi to threaten heel hooks, calf-slicers, and an RNC in order to keep Kevin on the defensive the entire time. The judges -- to their everlasting credit -- actually recognized this and scored Round 1 for Charles even though he was in what many laymen would call an "inferior" position. The video also contains footage from BJJ demonstrations, Oliveira's previous fight(s), and even touches on Frank Mir's finish of Brock Lesnar in order to further highlight the points contained therein.

Leg locks are such an equalizer. A leg lock guy is going to have vastly more success earlier in his career than someone that doesn’t train leg locks. I think the reason is that the room for error on defending a leg lock is SO SMALL. You can hold off on a choke or arm bar and let it go too far, and you’ll be fine. A popped elbow isn’t a big deal. A popped knee has you out of training for several months, so guys will just tap earlier to it. I’m referring strictly to bjj

One situation in I find going for a leg lock effective in mma is if you've taken them down but haven't passed their guard. They are on their back already so not a lot of risk of getting punched and if you're struggling to pass it you can drop onto an ankle and go for a straight ankle lock. This is at amateur level though so I'm not sure how it would fair against higher level level opponents

The problem with leg locks is getting punched in the face. It's the same problem with closed guard; it's fundamentally a very dangerous position so choosing to enter it is a huge risk. You have to have a much better entry than an imanari roll in your arsenal. Leg locks are useful in a chaotic scramble but they're usually a transitional tool and aren't really used to finish the fight. But I dont think that's a problem; leg locks will never be dominant in this sport since they're basically effective in BJJ because they're specifically designed to exploit the rules.
