The Problem with McFarlane Toys (Right Now)

I think he’s wrong on the whole digital future of collecting. I’d go as far to say it’s anathema to it. I began collecting the DC Multiverse line because I enjoyed the physical sensation that comes with unboxing a figure and then posing it on the shelf. If I want to manipulate a digital interpretation of Batman I’ll go play the Arkham Games and use the character model viewer.

Is it just me, or does "phygital" seem like repackaged NFTs?

Here's the deal; I was all about Marvel Legends. When the McFarlane DC Multiverse came out, I was very apprehensive about collecting it but I bought a few. The Multiverse line grew on me and I eventually discovered that the seven inch line displays better. That one inch makes a big difference.

The phygital stuff is so stupid. There cant be that many people using it and it sounds super confusing what you need yo go through just to get a discount. It sounds more expensive actually as you gotta purchase a bunch of things you might not even want to get a discount for another item

If you're a person that really enjoys McFarlane Toys, that's great, more power to you! That said, for me personally, McFarlane is one of those toy manufacturers where the values of the company completely undermine any interest in their products. It's one thing to release pretty mid-tier figures, but it's another to package those mid-tier figures along with Todd's "collecting as investment" philosophy. For that reason, I can't even get behind his more "premium" offerings it feels like I'm being conned even just buying the product for myself.

Mcfarlane has a handful of figures I like. I still prefer Marvel Legends despite their flaws. Mcfarlane has a lot of bizarre proportions and articulation choices. They seem to do statues better than articulated figures.

They are not sold out. He is full of shit. Artificial scarcity is one of the oldest biz tricks in the book… why does no one ever realize or talk about this? Wtf

Mcfarlane making ambush bug is actually revolutionary for me, i’m such a big fan of the original ambush bug mini series, and it’s so awesome i can finally get a physical version of him :)

Out of touch that their still pushing digital collectibles. If not openly hostile to those who don't want it, because its more profitable to push it. Deceiving those who just want the figures into funding it anyway. They have good figures. But I'm just being pickier in what I collect from them. Mr. Freeze, and Cyborg Superman are all I have preordered for now.

I can 3d print stuff a million times more detailed than any mcfarlane on my 8k resin printer. 😅 you should see the fan art statues unreal talent.

Stopped collecting McFarlane figures ages ago and I don't regret it at all given where they're at now, still churning out ass loads of Batman and even figures I would consider getting I can't get because they sell out within SECONDS and I'll be damned if I'm spending more than retail for a McFarlane figure. That's wild to me hearing you're retired with Legends but continuing supporting McFarlane, I mean hey you do you but that's so crazy.

I only ever bought certain McFarlane, Mattel, etc. figures as the characters I like rarely have merchandise made of them in the first place. Still holding out for the rest of the Gail Simone era Secret Six and some Ostrander Suicide Squad members. I don't own an actual Batman figure unless you count the DC Secret Files "Hugo Strange as Batman" which I've lost the Batman alternate head to while I was moving from rental to rental in 2020. Still haven't found the Captain Boomerang/Starfire/classic Penguin wave in stores and I still think I'll pass on Booster Gold as I don't physically have the room to grab a huge Justice League collection.

I started buying a few of the McFarlane toys. Got rebirth Superman, Ultraman, Captain Atom and Rival and I’m really enjoying em. There’s a Flashpoint Wonder Woman, and bunch of others that look nice too. I’m completely oblivious of some of the problems and new to this.

If they're gonna do this digital crap, at least make it something useful like 3D printable figures, parts, or accessories.

I don’t get into NFT stuff, but Todd has me hooked on them. For holding the digital, I get 50% brand new statues and physical waves. I got the new phygital wave for 50% off for holding the digital from wave 1. The whole wave ended up being like $35 plus shipping. Todd is definitely incentivizing people to get the digital with all the perks they come with.

My biggest issues are some of them are not accurate to how they look in the movies, comics, games, etc. Another issue is the good ones are hard to find, I was going to get the chase figure for Penguin but it was gone within a day while others just sit on the shelves. They are raising prices on regular figures which make me second guess if I really want them.

I think after the Starfire, Rebirth Tim Drake and Cyborg Superman I have preordered I'm taking a break from McFarlane Toys. I initially got back into collecting last year after seeing what was being done with the revamped Spawn series of figures and thinking they were going somewhere. But the waves got smaller and the figures got less detailed with minimal paint apps. Then this year, Todd put out the articulated two pack of himself with '77 Spawn, with the rest of the wave celebrating 30 years of his line being 7 inch statues and the phygital garbage. I have a feeling Todd is done with the articulated line of Spawn, which is disappointing since there were several characters that could've made the line across the entire span of the series (I was personally hoping for new "Bum" Cogliostro, Curse and Freak figures). I feel like a lot of the things that made Todd (as well as the other Image guys) admirable was their "F*ck you" attitude toward Marvel and DC back in the early 90s when they branched out to do their own thing, only for them to miss the money and come crawling back to those IP juggernauts. I think the only OG still gung-ho Image is Erik Larsen but the brand is pretty much Robert Kirkman and Saga now. While the Spawn comic series has blown up considerably, now having 4+ individual ongoing series at the moment, the spinoffs are what are essentially carrying the brand forward with storytelling while the mainline series only serves as a glue whenever Todd gets close to one of his coveted "record-breakers" while the meat of the comic is slow-burn filler.

Yeah I've been really liking what McFarlane's been doing with his action figures but this phygital stuff is nonsense. I don't want a digital thing when i can have the physical action figure on my shelf that i can mess around with and have fun with. There's nothing fun about looking at a figure on a screen. Some of these McFarlane phygital figures look cool like that Green Lantern but i cannot support these stupid NFT's. I'm definitely going to keep buying their regular action figures though because i really like what they've done recently with giving other characters the chance to shine instead of just piling Batman after Batman after Batman constantly.

He will never make hot toys like figures. Him and his team are way too lazy for the meticulous about of detail and work go into those things.

The “statues” are way too fucking small

I really just want McFarlane to do more premium Spawn figures, I dont care about the.. lets be honest, not so great articulation of their action figures. I just want cool display pieces of Spawn, and to not have it be limited to a kickstarter that launches once every bluest moon. That Medieval KS Spawn sure is taking a hot minute. So I’m not holding my breath on also getting a KS Gunslinger and She-Spawn. I’d love for them to do 1/6 scale figures as well, or… and I know it will never happen. Let other company’s have a crack at the niches he’s not filling.

I feel like all the statues Todd’s releasing under dc direct is manly because that’s what dc direct use to do before they went under and McFarlane took over the dc direct name

they're going in a weird direction, the biggest prooblem I have with McFarlane toys are the releases of some figures in the EU, still waiting for the last two figures from the Fighting the Frozen Page Punchers wave but see now most of the Ghosts of Krypton wave on amzn WTF ?

Mcfarlane just keep making very odd decisions woth thier toys, for example they butchered the live action batman figures cowls just to add a neck joint, Releasing half assed paint job and sculps for vehicles. And don't forget gigantic hands for superman. Mcfarlane toys have the most inconsistent quality issues out of all the big toy companies. Its actually fucking laughable

I’ll keep buying and sell the ones people want at a higher price😂 the green lantern silver age cost me $64 for two made 70 in profit. Some people want them others don’t. In regards to phigital. Now the statues I hate. The movie figs piss me off. I don’t want a statue of the Dude, I want a poseable figure. Same with music maniacs . I want Maynard, Wes Borland etc etc all to which could have hundreds of variants. But I think to a degree mcfarlane knows what’s selling and not … also the economy is fucked. That’s why prices are higher.

Mcfarlane having bad articulation is a myth. I can get 90% of them in Spider-Man poses as a toy photographer.

I'm not a hardcore Batman fan and I am grateful. I have over a dozen Batmans anyway! Especially the Dark Nights Metal stuff. Tons of that. McFarlane would have bankrupted me by now if Batman was my main focus. It's already one of the worst things that ever happened to my bank account the way is. Haha. They love their "bundles." That's how they have got me a time or two for sure. They also like their repaints, their "special" editions/variants, and their statues like you said. If you are super patient. Which I'm not. You can find some stuff on big sale. But, you run the risk of it being sold out. Keeps me out of trouble at least.

Regarding the hasbro and mcfarlane message in the beginning. At least Todd's molds ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE SUPERHEROES instead of Hasbro's 10 year old children in 5$ haloween suits
