The Problem With The 'Average' Voter?

A lady called Sarah from Grimbsy appeared on the Sophy Ridge show where she explained her problems with both Labour and the Tories. But it was frustrating as the average voter doesn't understand what power is, and why the problems they face exist.

@@craigham93 And bankrupt the U.K. it’s the same old rhetoric, Labour spend and tax harder, Tories look to reduce spend and tax less. Neither are right or wrong, it’s the overt swing from one to the other that is the problem. Also looking to increase the standard of living on average by impacting those who work hard, can’t be right….. Getting people into work at a fair salary has to be better than than the welfare state. How about 1. we scrap the welfare state for all those who can work, put them to work in all the jobs we struggle to find people for and pay them a fair wage for it. I would vote for this every day of the month. 2. We pay our nurses a better salary, reflective of what they do and invest in our NHS service, rather than line the pockets of those who don’t want to work and the politicians on both sides which manage to avoid tax completely 3. We stop chasing tax increases from middle England in the belief it improves society and chase tax on the uber rich. 4. We leave pensions alone - Labour managed to collapse the pension market with their taxation on pension dividends. Tory or Labour they are both as bad as each other……! I am amazed however how blind the Labour faithful are. We need something new and it isn’t Sir…. Kiers views of life. However I’m guessing this is what we will get as the Tories are probably just as bad, just in a different way. So UK Politics is broken. Yippee

I think those of us who are obsessed with politics can struggle to get into the mind of someone who isn't, so I appreciate hearing this woman's point of view - it's very insightful. However, it's also really frustrating because it feels like our media environment does such a poor job of informing and our politicians do such a poor job of engaging with people like this.
@michaelconway9668

That's the problem in this country when main stream media mainly swings right, unfortunately a lot of the younger generation prob go online and read main stream outlets and it corrupts their minds to the level to the level of corruption in this current government. I wouldn't say we're obsessed, we just find it interesting, maybe even entertaining. But you're right: politics is a very boring subject for most people. Add to that a general feeling of disillusionment and you get apathy. But I can totally relate to the Reagan quote, not because I'm a libertarian, I'm absolutely not, but because past a certain point you lose hope in all politicians and you'd rather not be taxed and try to fend for yourself than wait for politicians to fix anything. It's a matter of trust and trust has been broken. It's why you see so many conspiracy theories, because a lot of people will dismiss any official sources out of hand without listening, just because they're official sources, i.e. associated with politicians. And the same goes for the media: established media is automatically dismissed. A lot of people would rather listen to some dude in his basement who's just inventing things out of thin air, than a large media organization with actual access to information.

Decent fish & chips? Depends what you mean by decent. I remember seeing a video of a Brexit Party activist in Cleethorpes a few years ago eating fish & chips and saying we want British fish caught in British sea waters by British trawlers and processed in British processing plants for British consumers. On the day after the referendum my only Leave voting colleague said cheer up, fish and chips will be cheaper. I asked him why, and he said because our fishermen will be able to fish to their hearts' content, no longer bound by EU fishing quotas, and they'll be able to sell their entire catch in Britain instead of having to sell most of it to the rest of Europe. I presume he's happy to eat herring, which I believe is often caught in British sea waters and is popular in mainland Europe but not in the UK.

Don't worry, we can still import the good stuff from Iceland & Norway, and there are still one or two good fish fryers left in the town. As for catching the white fish that most British people still prefer, that finished in the mid 70's after the final Cod War. Iceland took exception to us plundering their fishing grounds. The "British fish" caught in "British sea waters" is generally of a species preferred outside the UK, and Brexit has made exporting it even harder.

The vast majority of voters have been propagandised and brainwashed into accepting the most amazing amount of tosh. The standard of education has been declining ever since the effective end of grammar schools, and even the public school "output" has gone to the proverbial wall. The overwhelming majority of younger people vote labour or progressive fringe parties like the greens. Do some research for once in your time commenting on these videos. One individual person isn't indicative of anything. It seems like an English person saying something ridiculous is enough evidence for you to cast the majority of England in the same light. And more proof on this video. One younger person says something ridiculous or is touted as a "average" voter and suddenly nuance goes out the window.

On both sides of the Atlantic we have a large number of economic and politically illiterate voters. The education systems have churned out people who are sadly deficient in critical thinking skills. No cohesive thought process at all. Contradicting herself through the conversation. It just shows what poor education we have in this country, nobody has to back up their opinions but they all feel entitled to have them. If she stopped to think about what she said about government intervention at the beginning, and then realised her later statements were calling for government support for her area, I'm sure she would feel rather foolish. Yes, that idea the Tories had last year about everybody getting better jobs.....well who does the jobs on the ground then? Who empties the bins, cleans the streets, cares for the elderly and harvests the vegetables? Young people have been fed the narrative that they all deserve great jobs without doing much hard work, or starting at the bottom and grafting their way up. However, such jobs essential to a functioning society, should be properly rewarded. So as you say, it's what the Tory machine has fed into the minds of this generation compounded by a lack of independent critical thinking skills being taught or encouraged by parents and teachers alike.
