My reaction to The Proud Family Louder and Prouder episode that's said to promote bad parenting from Trudy. Colorism and Black stereotypes wasn't enough, now apparently the show emphasizes horrible parenting. Let's talk about it. Please don't forget to comment, like and subscribe. Thank You!!!

In all honesty, I feel like the writers exaggerate stereotypes too much to where the message of certain episodes get completely overshadowed. They also lack having consistency in their character arcs. Since when was Trudy the mean mom? What do yall think?

I think the same thing there was too much stereotypes I do not think that the majority of black mothers that leave their kids outside at midnight I don’t think all black mothers do that but other races of people have different ways of raising their kids educating them I just think that was too much because it’s always debatable about everything and I remember when Penny and her father Oscar he open an attraction Parc Penny proud and her friends were trying to sing and then her voice became weird so I believe the TV series are Disney+ they are pandering the proud family louder and prouder reboot They might think that people were not analyse and they had their different ways of seeingWhat concerns black folks

I completely agree. agree. Proud family isn't showing bad parenting, and if anything, I think penny got off lucky, cause if I had ever talked to my parents like she did, I wouldn't be here. And honestly, I think they were bluffing when they said that penny proud could figure it out by them herself, if anything I think they set up the whole. You're going to live with sugar, mama while we're gone? I'm stunt, if you can call it that, to teach penny proudly lesson. After all Why else would Oscar give His daughter sugar? Mama's home address?

@@janayshacousin4778 Yes, I would actually like to see that video. I've actually been waiting for a long time to see that 1, because, while an older sister does have to babysit her younger siblings from time to time, from what we've seen throughout the show, both the new and the old, it seems that penny proud is constantly babysitting his her siblings while her parents get to go out. So I'm thinking like what's up with that?

Not all black mothers are the same is true some black mothers do that they have a problem so is The Mother the issues if she put her own child outside and not letting her child in so this needs to be an example it doesn’t need to be a joke how how Trudy raises her daughter Penny I feel like everything it’s a joke in this rebootSo this is why they added the stereotypes like people were not analyse how black people in cartoon characters get exploited so now black people are starting to be aware how they should be represented Because I was black folks as Black people we’re not always Clowns or entertainers that entertain people we’re not comedians not all black people not all black people are comedians By the way We cannot be a joke for people all the time because of the proud family reboot this is why they called pro family louder and prouder This new version is getting out of control

"you're grown" No Trudy, she isn't grown. She is 14 and a minor. Vulnerable and your legal responsibility. I'm a child who has survived being ditched in dangerous situations and locked out. It's traumatizing not knowing if you'll have a home to go to. If its a young girl there is definitely a risk of being assaulted, murdered, kidnapped, etc. I don't think a show should normalize this behaviour.

The reason for curfews is to make sure your child is home safe before it gets dark. Locking your child outside because they're late to curfew is contradictory. You should punish them for breaking the rules, but punishing them with the same risk of danger you want to protect them from is bad parenting They could've just had Trudy yell at Penny for misbehaving and punished her by sending her to live with Suga Mama instead of Penny needing to take a bus there in the middle of the night. I didn't even come up with this idea. I saw dozens of people say this exact idea

Thus might be me, but in the episode Bebe, in the beginning of with Oscar getting ridiculed for his job again, Trudy changed her last name just because they hate him, and to me it comes as uncaring and also cowardly of her to do it, because she is saying because it's common she won't stand by him to me it comes off as entitled and selfish to him.

I hate to say it but I don't think Trudy views Penny as a child. No offense but hear me out. She has penny watch the twins on almost every single episode penny wants to be out on her own. I also side eyed trudy in the original run where she tries to justify to oscar that penny isn't a kid( though technically she is). Then the twins to tween episode happen where an older Bebe and Cece ridicule penny just because she exclaims how she's the one who takes care of them most of the time when she tells them about changing their diapers all the time and the Cece exclaims that her acting like the third parent is why nobody likes her. Backtracking how is any of this Penny's fault? Talk about ungrateful from bebe and cece. In addition, may be Trudy's fault for trying to grow her up too fast. Trudy is also a hypocrite as well. She was so paranoid that Rene would steal her family especially her babies( bebe and cece) then dumps them on penny every chance she gets. Then I notice she also lets Penny gets away with too much like that strike episode where Penny was complainig about not getting enough allowance then she makes Oscar talks some sense into her. Yet no one doesn't think Oscar is still the victim here? 😒 Now we have Trudy unreasonably locking Penny out because she's late for her curfew? Trudy has no one to blame for herself for that😑

I have a feeling that Oscar had flashbacks to Suga Momma doing the same thing to him as a teen and that trauma both froze him in place (Trudy being on the warpath triggered him) and strove to help Penny. Especially how Oscar was being used as a negative by Suga Mama, essentially calling Penny useless and worthless. The undercurrent of the episode, in my opinion, kind of explores the family dynamic when golden girl Penny slips outside of her box. Things go left really fast and you see Trudy and Suga Mama being the physical punishment enforcers. Especially when the latter pulled out the belt and heavily implied a butt whooping. I clenched on reflex. I lowkey smirked when Penny, psyching Suga Mama out at the hospital, claimed that she would take REAL GOOD care of her grandma just like she took care of her and her DADDY. Hated when Trudy said "she got her daughter back". She’s still your child Trudy.

if the creator of this show had any sense he would address suga mamas and trudy's abusive behavior and actually have them held accountable as well as having oscar see a therapist. An episode about generational trauma in that regard would be great.....and no backpedaling and trying to make trudy or suga mama sympathetic. they need to take their lumps. They also need to address the issue of making all the latinos they have represented on the show as toxic people. the boulevardez family, lacienigas extended family, makeup boy and the altos. havent seen a single normal latino person. the chang triplets are treated in a healthy way, the muslim family they had was treated in a healthy way, they have other black families that are healthy, but every latino theyve repped acts really shitty

I feel it's hypocritical to have the line "You're grown figure it out" when she pushes taking care of the twins on Penny. In that she's grown enough to constantly look after two kids, one with autism but not enough to be out past 8:00 pm. It feels like she's only a grown woman or only a young teenager when it's convenient. Also I can understand not wanting your kid roaming the streets at all hours of the night because like you said it's dangerous. But that argument falls apart when you lock them out and force them to do the vary thing you were worried that they were doing. It comes across as less of a genuine fear for their well being and more like them just being mad that their authority was challenged.

Hi Kiwi 😻! The reboot Trudy is more strict than the original, and Oscar disciplined Penny more. Even Suga Mama’s treatment of Penny felt like gaslighting at times after she treats her own grandaughter like a maid (not saying kids shouldn’t pull their weight but you don’t treat them like a slave) & intimidates her while just ordering her about & then tells her she does it all cos she ‘loves her’ 🤦‍♀️ No, just…no. You don’t use love in order to make someone more obedient. You will need to discipline your kids as they grow up but that’s not the time to throw the words ‘I love you’ into the mix. You discuss that with them when you’re both in a calm state of mind when you’re not lecturing or disciplining them. And I don’t believe it’s fair of ANY parent to expect their older children to be on standby free babysitters - you may choose to have more children but your children don’t get to choose whether or not if they want more siblings. A parent’s kids are THEIR responsibility & if an older child doesn’t want to babysit or change their sibling’s nappy, then they’re NOT obligated to. Trudy should hire a sitter or offer to pay Penny to watch the twins so she at least gets compensation for her time.

Granted she always favored Penny over Oscar, so it does come off as a bit surprising that she acts that way when I think of it in just a Penny and Suga Mama context. But then you think about how she is with her own kids, especially as an adult now, and… yeah not surprising

9:44 I definitely feel that’s the case. They had all the components for a good episode, but execution wise it wasn’t all that great. Trudy felt out of character here. If they showed more of an escalation of things, like maybe she talks to Penny but Penny still misbehaves, then maybe I could understand. But it just jumps to Trudy getting upset. Like she remarks that Penny has been acting up for a month, but there’s nothing to show that Trudy tried to talk to Penny before it got to the whole “locking out” scene. It just seemed like she was mad at Penny up to that point without even attempting to talk to her like she would in the previous series. (Example: Penny and her friends dancing on TV in the revealing outfits, Penny getting influenced to download music, etc). Not to say that Penny was in the right or anything bc she wasn’t, but it’s just…well the whole episode was messy.

Yeah but also no. Not all older poc joke with "my parent is going to [insert any kind of abuse] if I don't do what they said. In my experience, many of adults,poc or not. tend to joke said in a "envious,angry,spiteful mocking way when it comes to teenagers" Allow me to explain. They think teenagers and young adults (Gen Z,Gen alpha) in this time have it easier for living in a time with advanced tecnology,"no war", terrorism, monetary issues that their era used to have (the economy is shit but some older adults don't realized it at all. Besides the fact that ass whoping,slapping,beating ur children isn't socially acceptable at all or wildly criticized by psycologist,social workers, and young ppl. They are bitterful that they are getting policed about it and not their parents, so they resort to emotional abuse and don't consider it bc it's not hitting ur children "kids these days are soft" mocking being emotional bc for some reason being emotional and sensitive is bad?. Because parents tend to said "back in my time,we used to go out and play hide and seek. You always on that damn phone" as if parent's didn't do the same as an adult ot they wouldn't do the same if they were our age. "U have it easier" some parents missed the point so hard. That's the idea. It's supposed thst ur children live a happier and better life than u did. And their children live even better life than they did?. But many parents are jealous and spiteful. Not only that but many still mistreating their kids bc "if they hit me when I was little,u would too" idk why. They think that is normal or want to feel some control. That's why some parents,white or POC do joke or comment that,to make feel younger generations stupid and sensitive or they are spoiled brats

I get some ppl cope with humor or dark humot. And jone about theit situation despite being a fucked up issue for others what they went through (ww2,SA,R4PE,robery,slavery). @bl00dyroses
@bl00dyroses 9 месяцев назад
Ofc there are parents,especially poc parents,that make their kids and pressure them to be perfect while the reason behind it could be understandable is not the only scenario for abusive parents. If u have in mind abusive parents abuse you for any reason: Exposing them cheating on other parent. They remind them of themselves. Becaude they got to follow their dream career. Because hate towards their children. And kids are never taken seriously which is dangerous.

Also it's annoying as woc myself,who had a mentally abusive father. How some ppl view complaining about child abuse as "it's a gringos/white thing" and paint child abuse "poc culture" even when the context is another and not pressuring POC children to be perfect (parents can abuse their children even for exposing them of cheating, first hand experience) which not only sterotypes POC (especially blk ppl) it's harmful bc it reinforces the idea abuse is normal and makes kids,teens,young adult think it's okay and not seek therapy to heal and hurt even more and the cycle goes on.

man, even at 18+ years old I think I’d have a full breakdown if this happened to me, but as a kid it would have destroyed me, I think I’ve had nightmares about this kind of scenario. I know that’s partially because I’m a particularly sensitive person, but it just seems overly harsh, not to mention risky and dangerous. Obviously you need to discipline your children somehow, and not all kids are quite as naturally desperate to not disappoint their parents as I was (I’m kind of an annoying goody two-shoes who cried when my parents so much as gave me light criticism lol- for the record I tried not to cry, and I they definitely weren’t at all wrong to criticize me, I just really care about what they think), but shit happens, and I feel like there are better ways to handle this kind of situation and teach a lesson than locking your child out at night. The whole point of a curfew is to keep your kids from staying out at night, right? So why force them to stay out when they do come home? It’s not only harsh and potentially dangerous but it also goes against the reason you have these rules in the first place. If you don’t want your kids to do a risky thing, then don’t make their punishment be an equally risky thing. It gives off the idea that you don’t really care about your child’s safety, you just care about whether they obey every word you say because you have that power over them.

But this is the "Trudy angry black woman" stereotype. And this isn't just the black community toxic behavior......it's ALL races of color. The Proud Family, both the original series and the reboot, have always been a mixed bag to me. On the one hand, you’ll get episodes like the Civil Rights Movement episode or the Muslim family episode that are great and do a great job teaching the history & addressing the issues. And I think the reboot has also made some valiant efforts in discussing the issue like the discrimination queer people of color face and the whitewashing of American history & slavery. But on the other hand, the way Penny continually is pressured by her parents to always be a flawless, obedient child never sat right with me. In both shows, Oscar & Trudy are often very quick to turn to harsh discipline, rather than talk to Penny about what she’s going through or why she should think more carefully about her actions. It’s pretty much common knowledge by now that overly strict/harsh parents don’t raise responsible kids, they raise sneaky kids. The episode could’ve been saved if they’d acknowledged that the parents endangered their child, and even examined how their parenting helped to foster their daughter’s issues.

I think the episode would have been better if it was Dijonay(?) or the gross sisters getting locked out by their parents as it would have highlighted their home lives because in the first series Dijonay home life is chaotic as seen in the episode where her and penny babysit her many siblings when the parents go out “grocery shopping” and if memory serves this was alluded to in the first series in many episodes that Dijonay babysits her siblings almost every day
@Theravingranter
@Theravingranter 8 месяцев назад
It could have been an amazing character point for either of them because we could see Penny empathize with them, seeing them upset and alone and cold and afraid, it could either humanize the sisters by showing their home life and how they got to be so tough or it could turn Dijonay from the ratchet girl to someone we could come to understand more. I think since Dijonay is one of the main group it would make sense for her to have this happen and for Penny to offer to have her stay the night. Dijonay could give her babysitting lessons for her siblings since they are older and Penny could say she always though her own parents were tough on her, at least her father, but now she appreciates her parents because they don’t do that to her. And I would love to see Trudy and Oscar go over and talk to Dijonays parents too. It could have been good but we can’t have nice things.

Could have been an oportunity for the mom to learn a lesson. Maybe she got the "lock her out" advise from other parents, but regrets it and becomes guilty after she does it. Her worry for Penny builds as she thinks about what could happen to her daughter and in the end apologises and resolves to never do it again. Okay, first off, your cat is legit the cutest damn cat ever (besides mine!! Lol!!). Moving on. I understand Penny's position. You said that this, kicking your children out, telling them to "figure it out" is a very common black experience, and I want to preface this with: my mother and father are not black, and obviously neither am I (but I could be adopted or something else, so, clarifying I'm not), we are white, but my mother grew up in Detroit, and then moved to STL, and both parents legit one of the worst neighborhoods you could live in in STL. Like... to the point, where when you say, "X street & Y street, and we went to Z high school", people go, "oh shit, you grew up in the hood hood." My point is, I've never seen this w/other white parents, being 100% honest, so, I wonder if it's a socio-economical & cultural experience, which is a very long discussion in and of itself, which is why I'm using those terms. I just wanted to say though that, I 100% have been where Penny has been, and.... it sucks ass. Even more so when you THINK you can rely on your parents, and they've told you, "should something happen, just come to us/tell us/you can confide in us" and then you DO the thing and then they outright just... basically, abandon you in that moment. It's no bueno. I think that's odd to create a petition for that though... that's just... how some families are. If people think that it's promoting bad parenting, like... idk, why can't they go raise money for something that helps children in Penny's position? It seems like virtue signaling, IMO. I've said it before and I'll say it again, The Proud Family reminds me of actually growing up with real things. Like, it's as if they are real stories that the creators have been told, and they were like, "we're going to make an episode about that." I think that's one of the reasons I enjoy, and have enjoyed TPF, because I resonated w/all the characters. Nah, let TPF continue, and people boycotting it is.... IDK. It seems super weird, cause, I've never seen petitions for white shows to be cancelled, and I'm like, whhhyyyy are people targeting TPF?? IDK... it has a weird vibe to me, one that I feel is.... different... and I'll be honest, it seems like it's a bunch of racists being racist, OR, people who are not racist but don't want any negative parenting on the television. I'm not about saying "no" to that though. Cause life isn't all sunshine and daisies (even though I wish it were for everybody). But, as you said in your pinned comment, it is out of character, but, on some level, sometimes I feel that moms go out of character. ALSO!!! What if she's going through menopause? Like, I know that sounds ridiculous, but when my mom went through menopause, holy. goddamn. shit. It was like godzilla rose from the sea and possessed her, and some parts of him still remain in her. Fire breathing dragon, and you are never sure when Godzilla is going to come out and use lasers to destroy you lmao. Anyway, love your videos!! Keep up the great work & have a great day!! Peace!

Locking your kid out of the house is the wrong thing to do. The bare minimum of your job as a parent is to provide food, clothes, shelter, education, and safety. Even though I'm a demographic that would be considered ""safe"" to lock outside at night my parents would have NEVER done this. Penny is at a higher risk of being a victim to a violent crime in America. Her mother should KNOW this because she grew up as a black woman too. If this episode handled this right, sugar momma would have called Penny's mom the second she showed up at her door saying she got kicked out and ended with her apologizing to Penny. (Unless she wanted to be vindictive and pretend that Penny never showed up at her house last night resulting in needless worry. Toxic but gets the point across). TLDR don't lock your kids outside.

who calls their parents when they lock you out of the house for not coming home at the right time? you are suppose to break into your own home. not sure about you, but it is like a challenge to get in the house. as far as i remember one window was always unlocked, so that once you figure out which window is the right window and figure out how to get into it, the parents are right there to lecture you while you are still a bit humiliated for having to crawl though a window to get inside.

What also pissed me off was how they sent her on a bus, in the middle of hte night, across town to her grandmothers, and the grandma threatened to use a dog leash on her (doing the belt snap) saying “I only do this because I love you” thats just… that hurt

If Penny is grown like Trudy says, then she should be able to make her own decisions. An example would be Penny telling her parents to hire a fucking nanny for the twins

They locked their 14 year old daughter outside. At night. No money (except for bus fare, which isn’t a lot) Nothing but the clothes on her back and a cellphone, with no way to charge it. Yeah they’re definitely in the wrong. Should’ve grounded her, taken away her phone or something. Locking your kid outside and expecting them to fend for themselves is abuse.

I love how Trudy changes the locks on her when she doesn't come home on time but constantly encouraged this behavior by allowing her to do things such as call Oscar by first name as if that's not her father. In a true black household you could NEVER call a parent by their first name its a respect thing. Its funny tho because now that she's locked out NOW she calls him Dad

Ikr! She called him Dad this time, cause she was scared. But Trudy just forgot Penny is still only 14... 🤦🏿‍♀️ She basically left her daughter to die (by rape, kidnapping, killings, etc.). My mother would never do that.

The writers I feel like they are using the stereotypes without noticing that it will be very debatable so every time something negative in the proud family louder and prouder reboot comes up somehow he gets to be a debate. This is why the series is failing at Disney+ Penny and her parents do not have a good communication just like normal parents to try to communicate with their children Oscar proud he’s not just goofy he doesn’t know how to man up and Trudy proud she does not get support from her husband of course Oscar proud doesn’t help too much in the house he always stays at home and comes up with different entrepreneur ideas that never helps the family Even if they were black mothers who did that to their kids is not the majority of those black mothers death left their kids outside during the night and never bothered to let them in the house to punish them or to ground them into for a bit their device their phones or banding for playing video games for an hour it is a cartoon butHe needs to make sense how are you a present a character because characters they were present people so this is why it’s important how we should be portrayed and not to put these negative stereotypes like this is the majority of black people have the way they act or how the way they are and how they carry themselves

Honestly I feel like what Trudy was a matter of control, not care for penny. “I want you home. Your not home. Now you have no home.” Curfews are to keep your kid safe, Trudy doesn’t care about pennys safety, she cares about her being under her control and listening to her. With abusive parents it’s always about control and power, never actually care for the child’s well being

Whats messed up is that there are lots of kids who have been kidnapped and killed because of situations like this where the parents would rather act petty than actually parent their kids. Media we consume contributes to the normalization of behaviours and norms and when people dismiss things like this as "its just a kids show" it potentially leads to bad ideas and abusive cycles perpetuating.

I personally do think it was a form of bad parenting. A neighbor did this to her daughter and she was almost snatched up. Thankfully she run into my yard and banged on my back door. She was only 15 at the time and was only late for curfew because she missed the last bus after her Soccer Meet and having pizza with friends After that, i was just disgusted at how parents could do this to any child, especially in this climate where kids are being snatched. And now with white supremacists going into black neighborhoods and unaliving us for simply existing.

What were the writers smoking when they wrote this episode? Everybody but Suga Momma felt like a different character entirely, and Trudy's "tough love" was unhinged and unconscionable! Here's how it should've gone down: Penny gets increasingly fed up with the myriad demands at home and at school, and also wants to spend more time with Kareem, so she starts to rebel. Trudy and Oscar try to rein her in to no avail, and Suga Momma offers to let her stay the weekend. Then, the episode proceeds largely as before, with Suga Momma showing tough love, getting hurt, and needing Penny's TLC. They could've also just had Penny act like kind of a brat and start to rebel, and spontaneously reel *herself* in when Suga Momma gets injured and needs help.

I remember thinking as a kid that Trudy was overall a good mom. Firm, but had grace. I don't recognize this Trudy in the reboot. However, being raised in a military family, I had the exact same punishment as a teen who stayed out late, difference was there was no yelling, just silence (which is actually more effective). Disrespect the parents, I wasn't worth a response from them.

Speaking from experience as a black women, theres this unspoken animosity and jealousy from our mothers. Obviously not all but theres more than enough for it to be a serious problem in the black community. A common experience as a black women is that your mother is your first bully. For those that never experienced this, thank your mother for not giving you mommy issues.

I remember the episode of the original Proud Family where Trudy gets overwhelmed with work, and then, as anyone understandably would do, she gets absolutely frustrated and chews out Oscar to get him to help out more. Although it’s played for laughs here and realistic to how some parents feel sometimes, she didn’t make Penny at fault. She even said, she HAS TO and WILL take care of her children. What I’m trying to say is the writers did her DIRTY here. Trudy would NEVER go this low before.
@sharonsartisticcorner1195

What I disliked about the original and the reboot (that made me only watch four episodes between both series) is that even though the show was written and created by black people for black people, the dynamics and issues they play around with are extremely negative and never fixed, just used for “haha, my family does that” humor. I’m Hispanic and my community has its own toxicity and “my family can be hilariously mean” moments, but I don’t think that a show meant to uplift specific generations should ride on objectively awful family happenings. Jokes will only serve to make the children in the target audience think that problems are supposed to be laughed off and not addressed.

02:16 Locking Penny out of her own home is soooooo out-of-character for Trudy compared to her level-headed 2001 counterpart. Wasn't Oscar the overly-protective, yet irrational parent in the original 'The Proud Family?' Even then, I can still envision OG Oscar merely grounding Penny for her disobedience rather than implementing such a rancorous action against his daughter.

I think during that episode. Penny could have let the mom know why she was late to arrive home in the text. She has a phone, use it. Just to avoid punishment. My parents would be mad if I was not home at a certain time without letting them know. It's not fair to the parents to remind thier kids.

Oscar is just as guilty. He did not stand up to his wife's insanity, he just put a bandaid on it. He could've just, you know, let his daughter back into the house. He's not the good guy parent here either. He's just an enabler. Leslie Erin Mahaffy was MURDERED by Karla Hamolka BECAUSE she was locked out by her parents.

This scene made me so mad, not like in the typical way cartoons do but like in a "I want to write a strongly worded letter to the show staff" way. The situation is so messed up and the fact its portrayed as a good thing baffles me. Even ignoring the obvious risk of Penny getting hurt, kidnapped or WORST, what does this teach her exactly? That the moment she's late she can't come home? That the moment she messes up, she can't rely on her parents? My mother simply yelling at me when I was little made me so scared of her I wouldn't tell her anything cause I was scared of how she'd react, if my mom pulled this? I'd lose all trust in her then and there forever. Pennys parents aren't "teaching" her anything, they are guaranteeing she'll cut contact off with them the moment she turns 18 lmao

I feel like they could have kept the screen with Trudy in but added something to show how bad Trudy's choice was, such as another parent finding Penny or police and addressing it. Yeah, I didn't experience that and I think that it is valid since it did happen. But there should have been some kind of catch to open the conversation that what Penny did was wrong but also Trudy is approaching it wrong. They honestly could have just had Sugar mama come over and yell about everyone being wrong like they did before.

The word “discipline” comes from the word “disciple” being to teach the word discipline use to be associated with something positive to positive teach someone to do something not punishment so no hitting or kicking you’re child out is not and should not be called discipline.
