[Part 1 of 2] As the front lines of Ukraine are disintegrating and the political leadership in Kiev is in disarray, the west still refuses to seriously contemplate talking about a realistic peace (or at least cessation of hostilities) in Ukraine. Rather, the wizards in Washington, London, Paris, Berlin, and Warsaw contemplate NATO boots on the ground or-at least the germans-motivating Rumania and Poland to start using their air defence systems to shoot down Russian missiles and drones over Ukraine from the safety of their states. Crazy ideas and escalatory to say the least. This and the recent cabinet reshuffle are the topics of this first interview part with Nicolai N. Petro.
Nicolai's Homepage: www.npetro.net
Nicolai Petro is a Professor of Political science at the University of Rhode Island and the author of “The Tragedy of Ukraine: What Classical Greek Tragedy Can Teach Us About Conflict”.
Nicolai has ties to both Russia and Ukraine and has been analysing their internal political developments for decades. Today we want to do an update on the political developments in both countries and talk about the Foreign Affairs article by Samuel Charap and Sergey Radchenko that a few weeks ago contributed another puzzle peace to the question about the failed Istanbul-peace process back in 2022.

When you say no one doubts heroism about Ukraine. I don’t consider any part of the reason, methodology or tactics of the US/Nato/Ukraine military strategies as heroic. Everything done in war is dark, but the horror of armies built on lies and dishonesty make it truly inhuman and nauseating. I don’t doubt some brave individuals exist, but Ukraine’s army has lived up, for the most part, to the people behind the entire dishonest premise of this war.

Good criticism. I'd add that the fundamental power of the Ukrainian effort is anti-Russian propaganda + neonazi military police rounding up conscripts and manning rear guard units that shoot anyone refusing to fight & die. The whole Ukrainian effort is Nazi ideology of national self-pity & grievance hiding behind a US smoke screen of budding democracy.

Of course, WE KNOW that most will go to military contractors, while Pentagon has very opaque system of weapons in reserve that could be quickly send to Ukraine, an unaccounted trillion that we read about from time to time, and which gives the ability of sending weapons NOW from the reserve. You still need to trace where they are ("unaccounted" often means stored by the maker...), check if they work, with munition it means firing samples of them, so it is still not instataneous. OTH, economy in wartime is in shambles, while Ukraine needs salaries for administrators, teachers, municipal services and, last but surely not least, the military, and resources for all those civilian and military activities, like weaponizing drones. This is presumably EU responsibility, and 50 billion was "penciled" for 5 years, plus some countries topping it.

Unfortunately the West's aim of this war is to keep the Ukis in battle to the last standing Ukrainian. It is cruel and inhumane, specially when it is realised that the West will get no tangible advantage by getting an entire Uki generation decimated.

This is all we - Ukrainians need to know about this proxy NATO vs Russia war: “Being an enemy of America is dangerous, being a friend of America is fatal.” - Henry Kissinger * >>>I guess it was the 12th or 13th time to Kiev, and I was supposed to announce that there was another billion-dollar loan guarantee. I got a commitment from Poroshenko and from Yatsenyuk that they would take action against a state prosecutor, and they didn’t. “So as they were walking out to the press conference, I said, nah, we aren’t going to give you the billion dollars. They said you have no authority, you are not the President. I said call him. I’m telling you, you are not getting the billion dollars. “You are not getting the billion; I am leaving in six hours. If the prosecutor is not fired, you are not getting the money. “Well, son of a bitch, he got fired.>If you put aside the immense human suffering and look at Ukraine’s war through the cold lens of international power politics, a clear picture emerges: the West is having a good war against Russia. All NATO has to do is send Kyiv munitions, equipment and money, which, as any general knows, is the c h e a p e s t way to wage war. (...) The lives are being given by the Ukrainians. They’re defending their nation but also, inadvertently, helping decide the Cold War. For 70 years, NATO deterred a Moscow attack westwards. The Russians eventually invaded, last February, what they assumed would be a conquerable target on their south-western border. The war that NATO long prepared for is finally being fought.

Nice talk. The presumption of western nations to know who will lead Russian government lacks fundamental understanding of how Russia works. Think, as an example- did anyone predict Putin to be leading Russia ? Or for that matter Gorbachev. American here; So it be would help to get off our high horses and rethink of the nuances of Russian leadership, their history and cultural influences when choosing leaders. Not all nations choose actors and comedians without a clue about policy , principles or Government to lead them.

The "next Ukraine." The new proxy in the setup phase. The Maidan "color revolution" is being repeated as we speak, as US modus operandi. *Georgia/Divide and Rule* Here is what they tell you these days: Something along the lines of "Georgian leaders are all Moscow puppets," and the oppression of the poor people via a "foreign influence law," and how it is all about current leaders being Moscow stooges.... *Here is what they won't tell you:* That the foreign state/empire (Washington DC) which pays these protesters or their handlers, via such agencies as the CIA affiliated NED (of ex-Maidan fame) already have their own act to avoid foreign meddling in the USA. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign_Agents_Registration_Act What the MSM won't tell you is that the foreign meddling in Georgia came FIRST, and that the act attempting to regulate this foreign meddling by Tiflis, came AFTER that. *A typical act of hypocrisy and deception, as per strategy of divide and rule, to avoid continental European/Eurasian unity implemented by Washington DC, as it has been for the past 200 years, using various deceptive divide and rule techniques.* First by London, and very convenient for Washington DC. Then after 1945, after the British Empire was driven into the ground using economic warfare means, directly taken over by Washington DC as explained by Michael Hudson in his book Super Imperialism. GRAND STRATEGY/GEOPOLITICAL ANALYSIS Georgia, and millions of Georgians, are simply being set up as the "next Ukraine." Such a setting up of neighbors against neighbors has a long history and it is considered the absolute "acme of professionalism" by Washington DC to set up others to fight and die, so that US leaders in faraway Washington DC can haggle and arguing how much the lives of these locals are worth, all in efforts to score brownie points amongst their adoring fans. To "invest" in such death, is considered the Washington DC norm, as stated by several Washington DC advocates for US global hegemony. The scale of such setups is not important, nor how it is justified: It is divide and rule. Such selective FAVORATISM is indicative of a divide and rule strategy, by an outside power. Whether it is currently Tiflis, or historically London which was being FAVORED by the POWER with the GEOGRAPHICAL ADVANTAGE which was Washington DC, it remains a divide and rule strategy. *It does not matter if anybody tells you it is a divide and rule strategy, or not, because the strategy is given away by the EVENTS.* One might chest-thump around about how powerful ones "fwiends" are, but there will always be a PRICE TAG. See Ukraine today, the "past FAVORITE." *There is always a price tag.* Often the excuses for meddling mirror each other, from "we must help the poor peopke" to "but, but, it was voluntary". Regardless of any apologetics it remains DIVIDE AND RULE.

What's so unusual about Russian Minister of Defense reshuffling? It's a position in charge of equipping and supplying the military, not planning and executing military operations. This is who makes sure the generals have what they need to do what they are ordered to accomplish, how they decided to do it. Shoigu is good at reforming, streamlining and optimizing fulfillment of military needs and the new guy is good at managing rapid expansion of production capacity, without disrupting continued deliveries. They let the professional soldiers do their thing. Those who do majority of the dieing are in charge of choosing how to do it. Seems like the only fair way to run things.

There is nothing new here, just a rehash. And there will be no negotiations. People just don’t seem to get that when it is patently obvious.

The most important issue for Russia... is time. This accelerating dilemma converges into two conjoining scenarios. Firstly the new weapons will begin to flow into the hands of the Ukrainian nationalists very soon. It will be a steady trickle... but the US have made it clear, it's not going to abruptly end. This means any major advance in the near-future will be far too costly to contemplate. Pushing the war into a frozen conflict. Which only 'helps' the current Ukrainian nationalist regime enter NATO and complete safety. Time is moving speedily against the Russians .. and they know it. So Russia has to make gains now. The only way to do that is make Ukraine pull resources away from the main 'active' frontline. To try and 'win' the oblasts they annexed... in order to say they have won their main objective. They're using ill-trained cannon fodder to push aimlessly at Kharkiv. The Ukrainians know this is just a poorly executed subterfuge. That's why they aren't concerned about it. They're only concerned about how Russia is using the propaganda from it. It is a meaningless gesture, as most efforts by the Russian regime are now. This leads to Russias' real and main worry. Trump is not going to be elected this year. That's official now. Whomever, or whatever controls the US has made that obvious... Trump is not a mistake they're likely to make a second time. This means four more years of a near-constant military lethal aid reaching the nationalists. As soon as Biden is re-elected... there will be a huge push to 'finish Russia off'. Get as much lethal aid there as possible. The Russian regime has no leverage... all they can do is rattle their nukes. But agains, it's a bluff... because they literally cannot use them. Russia is on the ropes... and the regime in charge know it.

This Mr. Petro does not seem to understand the military situation on the ground. Ukraine is unable to defend the border because they are not allowed to use NATO supplied weapon systems to attack Russian territory. A defense of the border is impossible with those restrictions. Plus you do not defend a border, you defend the defensible terrain, not an imaginary line. That is why after two weeks Vovchansk still has not fallen. You defend the river. In regards to recruits, Russia is in just as big a pickle. As is pointed out by those at Combat Vet News, the reason for 5 man fire teams is that is what you can train a raw recruit in a few weeks. US military training usually spends a year training a recruit who has completed basic training to be effective at the brigade level. Real military effectiveness occurs when a large unit can maneuver.

How about the information, that the frontline is marginally changing despite huge efforts of the Russian side? 10 km frontline changes with an artillery shooting 70 km is not worth anything strategically?
@milanmarinkovic3016
@milanmarinkovic3016 23 дня назад
".....huge effort.....(Russian)......" It may seem big to us but it is just a part of Russian capacity. Russian standing Armed Forces are 1,3 milion and 2 milion reservists. Right now, there are no more then 6 to 7 hundred thousand in Ukraine. Only parr of Air Force is involved. (Crews are rotated to get experience). Russia still didn't have mobilisation, only professionals, reservists and volontiers are fighting. Russia could mobilize about 30 milion soldiers. That would be a huge effort. What we saw up to this point is very moderate effort from Russian side.

Russia did not collapse economically because of support from the global majority. There, fixed it for you. Russia is a member of BRICS, an economic alliance with a larger GDP than the G7. Of course Russia has economic alternatives to the Western markets. Only a fool would not understand this. The world is so much bigger than the West 😊
@vaska1999
@vaska1999 23 дня назад
Part of the reason Russia didn't collapse economically because all of Europe's still buying its gas and oil, only at a much higher price, from India. More importantly, Russia turns out to have a larger economy than Germany and is #5 globally in PPP. China had nothing to do with that.

You show the valuelessness of your analysis when you compare what happens in Russia to what in the highly corrupt and dysfunctional American Political system. They are worlds apart - and different in nature. there is a vertical of power respected in Russia, and Putin does manage most things. This change from Shoigue to Belousov is a change in thinking and long term strategy, which you lot would never be able to grasp. You' re trying to analyse Russia in terms of America, and thats like trying to asses an orange as if it were a banana.

What the hell is Petro talking about? There is no importance to Ukraine receiving aid, he should stop promoting that idea in the minds of people who have been trained to look for and accept the foolish notion that Ukraine, under any circumstance, can win this war. It cannot, because the Russian effort will expand commensurately with any aid to Ukraine. The Russia position is CLEAR, they consider this an existential threat to their nation, thus they will do whatever is necessary. They would for instance use tactical nukes on airports that fly the F16 if that was necessary. Petro, wake up. Petro suffers from an intractable inability to admit the Big Truth: Russia is right, doing the right thing, and when it wins it will actually benefit the US people helping to end the illusion that it is exceptional.
