Netflix made chess sexy again with its limited series The Queen's Gambit. With Anya Taylor-Joy as orphan turned chess prodigy Beth Harmon, writer director Scott Frank created a cinematic portrayal of the mind of a chess genius through substance abuse, struggles with mental health and even the Cold War. But Walter Tevis wrote the novel in a simple, unadorned style that's a far cry from the stylish and sexy version of the story that wound up in your Netflix queue. So with no restraint on spoilers, it's time to ask, what's the difference?
While Anya Taylor-Joy is a more glamorous version of Beth Harmon in the Golden Globe winning awards season darling, the story follows a lot of the same beats. Following her from orphan and prodigy to eventual chess master and world champion, Thomas Brodie-Sangster of Game of Thrones and Harry Melling from the Harry Potter franchise play more complicated versions of their book counterparts. But many of the changes, while seemingly small, have sneaky wide-ranging implications on the Beth's journey from learning the game from the janitor at an orphanage, to developing an addiction to pills and ultimately her victory over a Russian Grand Master. It's an interesting and sometimes frustrating collection of changes!

4:48 I think the decision to make her mother "Ivy League-Educated Mentally Ill" was intended to instil in Beth a sense that her prodigious nature is also a curse which would coincide with her addiction throughout the series and self-destruction towards the end.

Yeah I saw her mom in the show as thematically representative of Beth's worst-case scenario. They were both incredibly talented nd capable individuals who struggled with mental illness in some way, but Beth was able to avoid her mother's tragic fate by all of the choices she makes and blah blah blah. I still think the series is just "okay," and it does feature a few notably problematic changes from the book, but this point was not one of them and simply adds to the complexity of Beth's character.

I was legit confused by how long they spent on this. It mirrored Beth's life. Genius can be genetic. The classic "becoming your parents." The line between genius and madness. Seriously, why do any thing other than mentioning it and moving on.

When I first watched the series I also thought it was an excuse Beth used when facing here addiction to pills. She felt she needed them to keep from being her mother.

OP has this exactly right. Its meant to show that genius can sometimes teeter on the edge of madness, and represent what could happen to Beth if all she focuses on is Chess and not becoming a fully formed adult, who takes care of themselves properly. That's part of why Harry shares that story of the chessmaster Morphy before he leaves her. He's worried she may become the next "Pride and Sorrow of Chess" if she doesn't develop some balance in her life.

The non-chronology of the first scene should barely be considered an artistic decision tbh, it’s essentially a trailer. Get people hooked and prove that the whole show isn’t about children in an orphanage, promise.

At no point is Beth deceptive about her age. When she is checked into the orphanage four minutes into the first episode, paperwork is shown giving her exact date of birth: November 2, 1948.

I like you pointing out all the tweaks to the show and our best guesses as to why the writers and showrunners would have made them to adapt the book to TV. It does seem like you thought the writers had an agenda with everything instead of just adapting it in their own way to make characters they thought would be more interesting or more understanding or more appropriate for TV. I agree with many of the reasons you give but sometimes I thought maybe they just saw a way of making an interesting character instead of some other suggestions you made. Like I'm not sure what you were trying to say about her friend helping in the last episode and why you were so upset about her. I don't think 64 million Americans would have wanted to see two young girls doing what you described in bed and then calling the other the N word, and also not wanted to see a young girl abused by an adult for pills. Those kind of changes probably stem from acceability to the largest audience. But then you are upset she comes back and helps her out financially as well as is married. It seemed like you were upset there was a reverse White Savior trope but I'm not sure why that was bad and not just convenient for the story and closing out a character's relationship arc. But then you were upset she was married? It's different from the book and thats the point of this show to point out, but it was minor and let her, like several other characters, have her happily ever after ending. Im glad you pointed them out but I think it's more interesting and fun to say art is art and not criticize the writers for the changes they made but observe them and analysis the characters depth instead. Love the show, thanks for making the video!

Just a correction, the friend doesn't get married - she is sleeping with her married white boss (married to someone else). I suspect that is what irritated them - completely shifts the agency of the character.

The difference the between the book and show for the friend's reappearance is that the main character reached out for help in the book, while in the show she appeared like magic help her. Also "reverse white savior" has a name. It is called "magical black person" a trope older than the "white savior". It is similar to "sambo" and the "noble savage" tropes. The hosts are correct to imply the show's version of the friend lends itself to this trope. The show also pointlessly went further in making the friend more morally compromised than in the book, she was hired to meet a quota, like in the book, but also sleeping with her married boss and the car she owns is a gift from said boss makes her sound like a morally corrupt opportunist. I think your right in that Netflix wanted to reach a wider audience, but to do that they watered down and mystified mental illness, and made a Black character an immoral magical savior.

Idk about the espionage and/or flirting sexually with the main character. To both of us(my wife and I), she was just acting out what she wanted most, which is a friend an a female friend at that(because chess is primarily male). I thought she saw her as the person she wanted to become at most, someone confident in being a woman. If there was Espionage that would be surprising, but hey it's possible.

The change to more moneyed parents had to follow from the decision to make Beth's mother an Ivy League level scholar. As a woman it was unlikely enough that whe would get such an education in the 40-50s, being poor too would have made it near impossible. The choice to my mind had less to do with elitism and more to do with juxtaposing Beth's attempts to make it in a very patriarchal snobbish world with her mother's previous failure to do so. The whole series was about women trying to find a way to be who they are in a world where there are no real role models for them except as wives and mothers. Her adoptive mother was another example of such a fate, being a very talented pianist who had to give it up completely on marriage.

My mom recommended this show to me precisely because of this. I thought it was very tastefully done as well, not beating you over the head with woke man hating feminist victim virtue signaling, but that the struggles of the '60s are there and can be overcome. Positive feminism.

But the book does the same thing in a better way by making Beth a more internally strong character. She isn’t reliant on others but is able to ask for help when she needs it. It’s not a matter of following in her mother’s footsteps but about her being the best at something she loves. Though Beth notices that she’s one of the few ( or only in some cases) woman at tournaments it doesn’t discourage her. She’s strong enough to do what needs to be done and that’s because of who she is, not who her mother was. Like they said, her mother didn’t need to be an Ivy League scholar so it’s just another useless at best, repulsive at worst, change from the source material.

Also have to keep in mind that chess also got huuuuge in the online streaming world around the same time. I can't say which is the chicken or the egg, but they coincided conveniently to compound on each others' popularity.

@@meatloafmen Not "some effect". It was huge. There were nearly no chess tournaments world wide, on any level. So, nearly everybody switched to playing online (playing online has a very long tradition in chess, the first chess server was set up 1980, long before most people knew what the internet was and years before the WWW was developed). When doing so. lots of activities were started, for instance Magnus Carlsen set up a whole tournament series for world class players, in Germany at least two complete league systems were established etc. One of the activities was to involve popular streamers in form of chess battles amongst them. But chess in general and world wide went completely online during the pandemic. All this has not so much to do with this show, that's just a coincidence.

I don't mind some critique of the changes but damn, I feel like there was no neutrality at all here, you just actively looked for the worst possible reasons for everything. Also yes I thought the same thing about Jolene being the "black friend" trope but also... you could say the same thing about most of the characters? The most unrealistic part of the show was how enthusiastically everyone rallied around Beth and sacrificed things for her talent. Really glad to see What the Difference come back but I hope they're not all quite this negative and nitpicky.

In reality watching chess is indeed absolutely boring if you are not a chess player yourself. But the show did a great job presenting it in a visually appealing way, so that also non (or occasional) chess players can enjoy the show.

The criticism about the financial situation of Beth's parents is quite contrived. It actually can be seen as a consequence of how the mother is portrayed in contrast to the book. They wanted to show her as an extremely intelligent woman - much like Beth (with maybe similar problems which she wasn't able to cope with - contrary to Beth). To demonstrate it without too much exposition, they show her having a degree from an elite university. And therefore it is just more likely that she is situated in a more prosperous social class than being rooted in a trailer park.

Perhaps for the first time in years, being a hardcore fan of your channel, I don't like your review. Yes, the book and the film have some irreconcilable differences. So look at it for what it is - just a different take on a story that may or may not have happened. The movie is fantastic. The story at the beginning contributes to Beth's self-abasement later on, believing that her mother was crazy so she's got some crazy in her too - until Jolene disabuses her of this idea. Altogether, everything that happened to her in the first six episodes of the show, brings her to a moment of amazing closure in episode 7 when she finds Mr. Shibel's board and then cries her heart out in Jolene's car. The acting in the show is phenomenal. not only by Anya but by the actor who plays Towns and pretty much everyone else. The characters are completely believable. Their stories are heart-wrenchingly real. The show has so many heart-warming moments that the book does not have. Both are marvelous, but they are not the same.

Hormuculus had me thinking.. okay, he fixed her with rape? But the movie was being true to the manga a little. The protagonist isn't a good guy, he questions if what he's seeing is real and it his ways of fixing is even a way of fixing. It's good in the sense I think the author's ideas were a bit wrong but the manga was also about that. It's an odd one, not always comfortable but between the manga and movie they both seem to be about how important everyone around you can be and are but they hurt too but maybe you think you can help but you might be inflicting your own trauma on others if you do and it didn't give answers

the former. my girlfriend and i couldn't get over the fact that this girl played chess in a basement for hours with an older man (and yes, it WAS the 60's) and no one ever found out or stepped in to stop it when they did

@@rosgill6 Yeah that was highly unrealistic but in a way, that's the whole essence of the show; it's an escape, a "wouldn't it be nice if the world was this way" type of story. But I totally get that reaction, certain things like that shouldn't be so easily glossed over

I swear knowing the book details just made the tv show that much more worse. I really hated all the deus-ex-machinas in the tv-show and how it removed all of Beth's agency in her own story...

what's the saying "the book is always better" still for the average person would not know this series is based on a book and would almost would not care not care because this is a good series to binge on your own time, the acting , the dialog, the set, etc it perfect and a series that found its own footing

This was truly a garbage edition of an otherwise good series. Do you think people don't consume both media, so they just take your word for the differences you mention? In the book, Beth has her "people recognize her in the park" moment, but it's in the middle of the Moscow tournament, not at the end. There are a dozen other instances of your manipulating the source material(s) here. This was so infuriatingly bad, as a fan of both the book and the show.
