Those are powerful words. However, I concur with your emotions. When I was a young teenager and heard it for the first time it touched my soul in a way I cannot describe. I listen to it often to go back in time to that moment. I can almost be in that exact time and place. There are other songs that can do this but not like this one. Excellent! For some strange reason I never really listened to Led Zeppelin. I remember having played since I scratched my whole name correctly on the back of an acoustic guitar, I was so proud of it. My father, not so much... lol. I learned off of you tube a few yrs ago and must have played it hundreds of times in a row loving every time... My wife grew tired of it and so I stopped playing it for yrs. I think thats gonna change. Haa ha ha! Good for you Doc!
I was the same. been playing for about the same time and play loads of Zep songs throughout that time, i played the Rain Song in standard tuning but it always felt like a cheap imitation, until I stumbled on the correct tuning and a tutorial on you tube, To play it now in all it's glory is heaven, How Page could write a song of this beauty in such a weird tuning is beyond me, a musical masterpiece
For me, this is the entire band's masterpiece. Pagey's stunning alternate tuning work is perfectly accompanied by JPJ's bass lines and strings arrangement on the mellotron, Plant's lyrics and vocals, and even Bonzo's brush work all equally make this song unique and memorable. IMO, Ten Years Gone is truly Page's masterpiece.
As a veteran with "issues" this song/video is one I can watch that helps block everything out for 4 minutes and 48 seconds. It's one of my go to videos for some peace sometimes. Thank you. I appreciate you 👍
Brilliant.... I bought my first guitar two years ago at age 56. I've been watching how to videos trying to teach myself how to play. This is the song I'm trying to play. I bought a second guitar to leave in tune. My wife asked why not learn something easy to start with? I told her, if I learn only one song I want to learn this. Two years later I almost have it! 😂
I agree with you. But I expect your wife is slowly going mad, trapped inside on rainy days, listening to you play the same song over, and over, for two years.
Paul , don't give up keep playing. It took me a almost 2 weeks to learn the rain song . Learning songs like this will force you to push yourself. I'm sure you found the tuning to play this was weird 😆
Learning to play guitar is difficult, frustrating, sometimes it even hurts, but it's the most fascinating feeling when you can get to play something right, it's worth every day of practice (and they will be many)
Paul I did exactly the same, bought a second guitar to leave one in tune. I'm still struggling with the song but hopefully with enough practice I'll have a decent version in by fall.
Such a beautiful piece. I learned to play this when my mother was leaving this world. Helped me with the grief. Crazy thing... right after the funeral i was in the car with my daughter and the Rain Song came on right away. ❤
The crazier thing is that it’s not that crazy. I’ve lost my family and it’s to much to write here but they’re still with us for a while after death. I’m not a person that goes to church but there’s more to this life than we know.
This is the kind of writing that set Page apart from everyone else in the rock world. Eclectic taste and a willingness to experiment and change styles, even after having massive success with another style
Totally agree. Page was multi textured guitarist with skills on almost all areas of the guitar.Rain song, Black Mountain Side and A few other Number BronYaur-a-Stomp show his taste for folk, but i always found Rain song quite a Jazz guitar influenced number with so many chords found in jazz ballads. I think a guitarist called Bert Jansch was Page's hero in terms of folk guitar

I cannot understand why I have only found this video 9 years later!! That is sublime. One of my all-time favourite Led Zeppelin numbers, particularly because it displays just how expressive Jimmy Page’s acoustic writing and playing was. How I wish I was gifted enough to be able to play this in this way. Houses of the Holy contains some of my favourite numbers but also, the album cover was photographed at the Giant’s Causeway, my old playground as a child - I was brought up just a mile or so from there. Mr Barrett, sir, that was so beautiful. Thank you so very much for posting. 👍🎸☘️

This song is all about the subtleties and he has them all down! Each chord progression emphasis in exactly the right place and the emotion just moving through his body! Most excellent! I can play this song and it is more difficult to get than people give it credit as I consider it to be a Jimmy Page masterpiece!! Bravo my friend!
This acoustic version of the Rain Song doesn't get any better than this. The fidelity and precision in David Barrett's play style in just incredible... I could listen to this all day :)
I wasn’t a die hard ZEP fan back in the day, but this is one of the best songs ever. Now that I’m much much older what a treat to have this music in our lives.
I remember when this first was released and it was such a shocking change from the hard rock Jimmy Page was famous for. It turned out to be way ahead of its time and is now timeless when played like this. Great rendition, thanks.
Musicians truly amaze me. How does someone come up with a melody like this, then sit down and find a way to bring it to life on a guitar. He has even changed the tuning on the instrument to suit the sound/tone in his head! I'm gobsmacked at the talent involved. It's interesting to note that most of the strumming is done with upstrokes.
He used open G minor. I learned how to play it but that tuning is real tricky to get it to sound right and I just don’t have time to keep the chops up to play. I like Ten Years Gone better.
Page has been playing guitar professionally since a very young age. Dude also got heavy into drugs later on and had a massive amount of musical production knowledge. I would have loved to see his at home private flow jams
@@wendyandgeoffpattison2610 when I was tooling around learning to play the Rain Song I noticed the chords sounded better with upstrokes. The man is a genius. I still think from a guitar player’s perspective that Ten Years Gone is one of his best compositions. He covers a whole range of emotions. It really moved me when I first heard it 40 years ago and even thinking of it now moves me.

Undoubtedly brilliantly played, one original version however, was, according to a friend who passed away recently, though it possible, after myriad variations that the unconventional tuning used included an another string tuned to C as far as I remember ?This friend devoted his life to this Art .I deeply miss him. The Rain Song is a masterpiece, the sounds, the lyrics, the guitar and piano, apparently it takes a whole orchestra to play this beautiful song on the studio recording by Zeppelin. I'm not surprised, a masterpiece takes a lot of work. The Rain Song is and always will be, my favourite Led Zeppelin song

Such a gorgeous cover of a beautiful song and piece of music from my personal favorite band. When I play this song for people who think Led Zeppelin was nothing but loud and heavy distortion, they are blown away and are open to hearing more from them. This song just popped into my head and as a result I stumbled upon this. I know it’s old, but very good rendition. That right hand thing in the final chord was super cool. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before.
I learned this song from the Led Zeppelin Complete Songbook (got it new when it was published in the 70s). It didn't specify alternate tunings, so I learned it in standard tuning. Didn't even know about the alternate tuning until very recently, and now I cannot wait to rediscover The Rain Song
Learning this song was a bear for my limited talent but I now have the problem of keeping a guitar tuned for this song all the time so I don't forget. I guess it's time for another guitar (gee that's too bad!) Would like to know what model Martin you're playing here.
Hi, and thanks ! It is a discontinued model, a Martin 000C-1E. It's a great guitar that was given to me, it has a K&K pick up, but I use an AKG in this video.
