Working on a ranch is the best first job you can have. Teaches you so many values. I worked with my dad all through my four years of high school in a horse farm. Sometimes even had to go do stuff before heading off to school. Its a beautiful life indeed!

Good training Mitch. The ranch work is good to prepare one for the Service. You'll have to keep us updated on Mitch's progress. I did the similar path from the ranch into the Army. At least you know Mitch has learned some good tools from his work at the ranch.

I agree, I hope that the skills he learned here, he will be able to translate into the real world. We have only heard that Mitch is still in basic training but according to his mom, he loves it. Hopefully we will get more of an update when he finishes basic. Thanks Frank - Mike

The work ethic he learned on your ranch will go a long way to helping him be successful in the Army. All the hard work you put him through means he will be able to literally run circles around some of the other recruits who have never worked a hard job before. Hopefully, Mitch is doing well in the Army. I hope Mitch was able to get the field he wanted. Hopefully Mitch was able to go into diesel mechanic as a field. As for myself, I served 20+ years in the Army. For the most part, I took it 3 years at a time except for the 4th re-enlistment I took 4 years and then six years on my last which put me over 20 years. Desert Storm sorta put a hold on me retiring as planned.

Yeah I encountered an army from cadets, considered RAMC as comissioned medic, auto captaincy means they can't fuck you around so much....then my medical career imploded, I became a microbiologist, and I'm loving the way the pandemic is helping humanity deal with the appalling hubris it is so often guilty of. We needed reminding of our vulnerabilities. Wait...oh yeah the army, right... Hats off to Lieutenant-colonels everwhur especially in charge of MASH units. Thankyou doctors. Oh yes...I just can't keep it zipped, maybe you noticed! XD

I love the fact you are giving younger folks the chance to work on your ranch and to grow the experience of the work ethic there, which requires a multitude of various tasks, which will serve them later in life. The other day I mentioned the word " posse " to my 3 grandsons, aged 10, 11, and 12, and they responded...pa pa, what's a posse ? I started to say when you watch cowboys and indians on tv ...... ( when i was interupted ). They said whats cowboys and indians ? I was SHOCKED to learn none of the boys had ever watched a western on tv, because the are constantly playing with their electronics, i-pad, etc. I have to feel discouraged for some of the youth today, not having the chance to experience a life on the farm. Best of luck to Mitch and to you also on your next replacement. Love the old pick-up truck in the beginning of your video !

I do think its important to give kids that want to work a chance to see a different side of things. McDonalds doesn't raise hamburgers and the like. It also gives them a chance to use their problem solving skills in real life. Lots of times I get calls with a problem and if its not life or death, I tell them they can figure it out. 9 times out of 10 they do. We recently heard from Mitch and he has graduated from basic training and is now moving on to his job training. We are excited to see him next time he comes home. Thanks for watching - Mike

Hey pal, I'm 30 years old british army sniper veteran, I emigrated to Canada and I live in alberta! I've always wanted to be a farmer on the ranch, I have no experience as of speak but I have a offer to work as a ranch hand on a ranch north of me and he says he's willing to train as I stated I would like to work on a ranch and commit to them with my skills and learn and grow with them , I'm a blank canvas to be taught , I have a natural love and passion for wildlife and cows, I have another 30 years of work left in me and I want to make a life and career and lifestyle for my family, I know I'm older starting out as I see your ranch hands are younger, but I should still go for it right? I am a fast learner and can brave the weather, Any tips for a older new comer?
