I had the pleasure of dining in this gorgeous mansion back in the latter 1970s. Someone had arranged for my group to perform for a club event after which we were served supper in the formal dining room. While I remember eating, the food was secondary to the overwhelming beauty of the interior. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

You could not build a house like this today. It would be impossible to find the artisans to do such elaborate carving and decorative art work. This house goes way beyond Victorian surrealism, a real gem.

You have solved a mystery for me! I visited this home with my family on a vacation when I was 6, on our way to Canada. It made a huge impression on me and began my love for victorian architecture. For years I have asked my siblings and parents about this house, referring it to it as the Ingamar Mansion. No one seemed to know what I was talking about! I thought it was in Oregon. So...I follow you and I saw you post this house as the Carson house and I knew it looked familiar! My spelling has been off all these years and so has been the location. Finally!!!!!! My mystery is solved! Thank you so much!!

I grew up in Eureka, California and this is a beautiful building. There is another house near the Carson home about a block or so away that is called The Pink Lady. If my memory is correct Carson lived there while his home was being built. There are a lot of Victorian homes there, many have been restored beautifully.

I was recently in San Diego and went to Coronado Island and was blown away by the Hotel Del Coronado.. “The Dell” as it’s know was built in 1888. It is one of the last surviving wooden Victorian beach resorts. You should definitely investigate. The wood panels and coffered ceilings alone make it worth the visit. The movie “ Some like it hot” with Marilyn Monroe was filmed here.

I was the gardener there in the early seventies. One of my duties was to turn on all the lights in the morning, so I got to know the place pretty well. It is interesting to know that all the fireplaces burned coal, not wood. The woodworking was of the highest quality, I remember the stairs handrail was contoured to fit the hand so perfectly, it was almost alive. heard that Mr. Carson would sit in the tower with a telescope watching for slackers at his mill. I don’t know, however the relatively sparse tower room had an absolutely beautiful view. To the right of the mansion was a sort of English garden surrounded by trees and hedges. Some say it’s gaudy, I love it, it shows what true craftsmen can do.

This is not the only house in Eureka. And this is not the only story originating from this area. I wonder why this area has not been acknowledged and told more in mainstream media? Also, Ferndale, south of Eureka, is known in many movies as a famous set. Maybe the most famous is "The Outbreak." But wait, there's more. Around the bend is this ancient forest. The Humbolt area. We have trees and old growth that once got saved from the crazy lumber industry back in the 1920s. Walking around there makes you feel like an ant in a giant forest. A fantastic area. I'd like to know why Eurika doesn't get more attention with its impressive buildings and history.

This is an excellent example of what was once referred to as "Victorian excess". Materials, particularly wood, applied to surfaces to emulate carved stone. In reference to any particular detail, the owner could always claim "...yes, I've got one of those...". They can have their moments though, the Moroccan hallway is a good example.

My my 3x great-grandfather and great grandfather we're in the Michigan lumbering business having many sawmills. Their goal was 3,000 acres a winter weather permitting. I have all the records from their time in business, from 1812 to early 1870s. It put people to work otherwise May starve for the winter, it was literally a mobile city through the forest. Housing the men feeding the men and doctoring the men. They even employed native Americans. The country was young and growing and the wood was needed. Also in the same time. They ran a fur company and dealt with the American Fur company Through their hard work and sacrifices my current family has had a very easy time of things, I guess because nobody hasn't been an idiot with money . Do I feel guilty about their line of work? No not at all, I feel very proud of my ancestors and what they carved out of this country. And to add with the money they were making they brought education back to their home base, they built the first school and paid for the teachers for 40 years.
