Thank you to Abbott for sponsoring this video! Visit BeThe1Donor.Abbott to learn more about donating blood and plasma.
There is a worldwide blood and plasma shortage because of the pandemic. Today I decided to sit down and answer some of the most common questions you have asked me all about blood, how to donate, and dispel any misinformation. We’re talking eligibility to donate regarding COVID and vaccines, the safety of blood and plasma donation, and what your blood type may or may not say about your dating life. Anything else you want to know about blood or donating? Ask below!
I LOVE reading your comments and take your suggestions seriously. If there’s a subject you want me to discuss or something you’d like for me to react to, leave a comment down below. Many of my videos have been born out of suggestions directly from you, so don’t hold back!

My daughter is 9 months and has diamond black fan anemia . Since birth she hasn’t produced any red blood cells. So every month she gets a blood transfusion. until she’s 1 and gets all her shots they can do bone marrow testing and see what else we can do long term. Every 4 weeks I go to the hospital and I get to see a little red bag full of blood . And I just think wow that was someone’s blood . It’s made me want to donate my own blood and I also encourage my family to. I didn’t know how important blood donations could be

My dad found out he has an ultra-rare blood type (the RH null you were talking about) when he was young and the first time he volunteered to donate (through his work where almost all employees would give blood onsite), he was ushered to the front of the queue and his blood was airlifted off the site - he went on to find out that his blood was used to save the life of a baby boy who needed emergency surgery. @@Nikhil-lf7kp Though you can give O- blood to anyone, an exact math is still the best by far. O- people can only receive O- blood, which is also given in emergencies and to people with unknown blood type, so it shouldn't be the first choice for people with a different known blood type. AB- blood can only be given to people that are AB+ or AB-, which is only about 5% of people. But AB- plasma can be given to everyone. And for platelets blood type doesn't matter. Though the ABO and Rh of the blood are the most important factors, other factors such as Ro and Phenotype might also be important. And take "everyone" and "doesn't matter" with a grain of salt, as there might be persons for which the general facts doesn't hold. You could argue that O- and AB- donors are the most important, but there is no way that they can keep up with the demand.

So on top of being A, B, AB, or O you are also either Rh positive or Rh negative. From my understanding So being Rh null is extremely rare
@bemusedbandersnatch2069
@bemusedbandersnatch2069 3 года назад
Fair enough as blood typing can get a whole lot more complicated that ABO and Rh null kind heads into that territory. So the basics: there's a separate factor called "Rhesus (Rh) factor" that is either positive (+) or negative (-) depending on whether or not you have it. So add that factor in and you get eight basic blood types, four Rh positive (A+, B+, AB+, O+) and four Rh negative (A-, B-, AB-, O-). Like with ABO, people can only accept blood with Rh factor if they have Rh factor. For example, A+ can accept A+ and O+ blood as well as A- and O- blood but A- can only accept A- or O- blood. Rh+ blood would make a Rh- person very sick. This is basically how blood typing works out 90something% of the time. However, A antigen, B antigen, and Rh factor are made up of multiple different proteins that come in different varieties. Normally this variation doesn't affect blood typing much but sometimes it does. In this case, Rh null is what happens when somebody has none of the Rh proteins whatsoever. They're not negative, negative people still have some of the associated proteins even if they don't have Rh factor itself, they're null because they have absolutely none of that. Which is bad for them because standard Rh- blood would make them very sick the same way Rh+ blood would make a standard Rh- person very sick. Of course the reverse means their blood is a universal donor Rh-wise. You could give it to anyone and their lack of proteins for Rh won't trigger an immune response (if they have A or B antigens those might though). Yeah blood typing out past ABO gets weird. IIRC there's also something called U antigen which comes into play in very rare cases too if it's missing from the blood type. And of course if you're getting past blood type an into organ transplants there are a whole different bunch of antigens in a more complicated system to worry about. But that's beyond me. LATE EDIT to add: As a couple of people have pointed out further down in the comments, a critical difference between Rhesus factor and A and B antigens is that people don't automatically produce antibodies to Rhesus factor. For example: if someone has type A- blood, they automatically make B-antigen antibodies but they don't make Rhesus antibodies unless exposed to it. So there's a period where you can give Rh+ blood to a Rh- patient before they develop the antibodies to it that will cause a strong immune reaction and make them sick. (Related fun fact: AB blood is preferred for plasma donations because it doesn't have either of those antibodies.)
@BeakerandBella
@BeakerandBella 3 года назад
@@stellannie86 when we say someone is Rh positive or negative we are referring to only one antigen specifically, D. The others commonly worried about are C, c, E, and e. Rh system has a lot of antigens (49 are known) and an Rh null is missing all of them.

1:55 I got over my fear of blood from... getting a lot of blood tests, but donating blood while different is the same process and part of it was the pain associated with it I used to have intense anxiety but just from exposure I've found it's no where near as bad as I thought it was, granted a week before I got my first tattoo and became desensitised to needles, taking blood goes deeper and I'd say hurts more than a inner wrist tattoo does but for less of a duration. Once you're ready I'd recommend watching them take the blood if you feel that's something you could do, try not to tense your muscles and just relax your arm and you'll realise its just an uncomfortable pulling sensation the initial pain was a pinprick and dissapears once the needle is actually in you, but if you don't confirm that atleast in my case I had the belief I was still in pain and that it was the same sensation. I don't know man humans are wild.

I live in the UK and my doctors have always said I can never donate blood. Edit: I just googled it, It's illegal to donate after blood transfusions in most European countries but in the USA you still can. Interesting :)

Weird knowledge: In Japan, there are decently large circles that believe that blood type has an effect on personality. As a result, many fictional characters often have their official blood type revealed, but more seriously, some workplaces treat blood type as a pseudo-zodiac sign, where they may accept or not accept workers based on their blood type due to expected personality traits.

And that's one of the reasons why in many countries you keep medical information private.

that's actually super interesting from a psychological standpoint, given that it's probably creating a self fulfilling prophecy. like in Jahoda's study where males born on a specific day were named accordingly, and were expected to act in an aggressive way based on what day of the week they were born. the official statistics showed that arrest rates were much higher for males who were expected to be aggressive based on their day of birth and name because the expectation for their behaviour created the self fulfilling prophecy

@@bryrk Yeah, I heard this is the same with names themselves. If a name has a certain reputation, like Chads being mean or Graces being really nice, many people with that name will be pushed towards that reputation, creating a self-fulfilling prophecy

@@bryrk Having worked in a school for my career 25+ years we noticed that boys named Cody were discipline issues. Very naughty boys. Only a few Cody's that weren't. So I think you just have those kinds of cases. Maybe we just expected them to be naughty, who knows.

Please also donate platelets! I'm dealing with cancer myself, and the medicine I was on dropped my platelet count super low (we're talking about 5,000 when its supposed to be 350,000+) I had to have a platelet transfusion, and it helped massively!

I haven't donated in a while but I'm O- negative, so I used to do a double red cell donation when I went which is what they recommend for O- since it's the less common blood type. Don't go donate blood because of a gift card or movie tickets, do it because it saves lives and you'll feel good about doing it. Getting a blood donor shirt is cool though 👍

Never seen movie tickets offered. I've gotten gift cards 3 or 4 times in the roughly 40 times I've donated. I've been asked and done double red a few times with my O+ blood. Got a shirt one time, but it didn't fit well at all.

Back in South Korea, I used to donate 320ml of blood every 2 months. The nurses already knew me and were very happy to see me because I was one of the few O+ to visit that blood donation house. Surely, needles are scary, but it's totally worth it!

I remember back in the second grade one boy from school needed a blood transfusion, (for weeks it was what everyone was talking about) and so we were all given a rudimentary explanation of how blood transfusion works, and it was then that I decided I'd become a blood donor when I was old enough. 33 years later I'm living up to that vow.

Well technically plasma comes from the tubes that have an anticoagulant in them. If the blood was allowed to clot after drawing, the plasma will have then been removed, making that tube yield serum after centrifuging
