Darin Briefly Tells what his favorite Ford Engine is..... Mine too
His next story brought chills to my spine, as Darin Morgan talks about his most prized possession. A piston ring from the #2 engine, from the Wright Brothers Airplane. He will tell how he worked on that engine, for a restoration project with the Discovery channel. How the Smithsonian, allowed the engineers to remove the original plane "The Wright Flyer from 1903, to measure, and analyze the engine, to construct blue prints of the engine. Just amazing how that piston ring was cut on a wood lathe, converted to cut metal. I thought he told me it was made from a piece of pipe.
He also Mentions How much power can be made from 598 cubic inches of Big Block ford, with Jon Kaase SR-71 Cylinder heads. I was a bit off with my guess.

People say the LS was ripped off from Ford, well that's kind of misleading. But look at the Gurney Eagle 302 heads, the port layout, heck even the rocker covers are pure LS ;) I'm a Chevy guy and I don't mind saying that either

From the years when he began to speak about head designs. All those years ago . I m still stubborn about the old FE because I got a lot of free parts. I love Cleveland’s! The 4Vs are the best engine ever made. I had one, and I wish I had kept it! I’d like to see the Godzilla 7.3 adapted to the 4V Cleveland heads. A set of CHI 500 ci heads.

@@DragBoss351Cleveland You know Tim when we are all in Heaven there will be just the nicest UTube videos left explains Engine History. That’s fine but the ones who THINK they know something because they have read it or heard the same old Wife’s Tales. At 73 I am not going to debate with these people. But not turning my back on them either. I am going to try and be more in your audience more often. One other person who feels like use is George Brice of Star Racing who does TTT or Tech Talk Tuesday every Tuesday for 3 years now and has all of them on his site. I think it would help to have a list for everyone to see if great UTube sites oh like Ford SB engine guy Ben Alameda who is also passing on and has passed on Terrific information he has Proved Himself. He offers his phone number to help with a slight charge which I feel is just fine. doing the cubic inch per cfm calculation, is the same thing Smokey Yunick worked out back in the 1960-70's. He came up with 5.5 cfm per cubic inch, for max HP at 8000 rpm on a 350 Chevy for sustained high rpm power NASCAR. the calculation Darin did here is approximately 8 cfm per cubic inch at 8000 rpm, or 7 cfm per cubic inch at 7000 rpm. 7 x 75 cid/cylinder = 525 cfm. on a 598cid v8. when I mentioned this months ago, the answer I got from this channel was, I was talking old dated technology. that's a misconception. Smokey was using stock GM cast iron heads with great limitations, he admitted the SBC iron head would only flow 250 cfm maximum ported, where he "ground hell out of everything in sight" and was paper thin. today, you have aluminum heads and aftermarket iron heads with much more wall thickness, allowing more porting, and bigger casting patterns to begin with. so where Smokey was limited to 5.5 cfm/CID at 8000rpm with the SBC, you can simply calculate in 8 cfm/CID at 8000rpm and you have the raw castings to be able to get it. THE PRINCIPLE IS THE SAME. and he did that by back to back dyno testing, head porting until he could not pull the intake up anymore, and the max HP level was reached. having said that, Darin's method is the same, just using modern HEAD CASTINGS, he's able to shoot for a bigger number. what I glean from this is 8cfm per cubic inch at 8000 rpm as a ballpark starting point using modern castings with more potential....and much appreciation and thanks to DBG and Darin for sharing that information. it answers the question, how far has casting and port technology progressed in the past 50 years ? well it progressed from 5.5 to 8 which is a lot % wise for an NA motor. the theory DID NOT CHANGE. the head castings potential did.

@@DragBoss351Cleveland is it getting a footing in racing? And I have not seen the heads in the way they are built. Brian Wolfe has been working with them and they have a small block bore spacing. I’m curious. They might make a good powerboat engine. Jim was ribbing me about the FE being designed in 1937, but the Allison and Merlin were too. I wish they’d put 4 valve heads on them. The bottom is good for a 4.25 stroke at 7000 all day and heck stock stroke I wound them insanely. The 7.3 is a 427 bore and 428 stroke with the 4.38 bore spacing.
