I think this game is really different from black’s pov. Pink sits behind you in russia, seems to be totally cool with you, and at some point he breaks your +8 (but nothing else) and puts in a crying emoji. In response you give them like 7 cards in their own bonus so you don’t have to worry about retaking/breaking every turn. Then pink starts beating the shit out of you and breaking all your shit every chance they get. So you try to cardblock him and force him into orange, and eventually you kill him because it’s clear he’s never going to relent and never going into Orient. I don’t blame the guy for his play, honestly. And I don’t think they’ll be an expert for very long.

The critical point is black never gave a cap cards. Which is a very unfriendly move, and it basically says ‘I am not willing to work with you’. A single break back in russia would have been more suitable.
@FreePete
@FreePete 2 дня назад
We agree on what black's POV was. I'm saying that POV exemplifies expert play. How do you get out of a situation where you raise and your opponent re-raises, and you re-raise? Two ways: you stop re-raising which black did not do or you get lucky, get fed kills and still have to go very negative on a two card kill. I think Black wins the game on speed assuming orange doesn't find out that he has no troops on any of his capitals for two turns. Most people black would play against (who are good) would be happy to card and pass behind him and take second even play for first. I've played enough card and pass on these settings now so I want to show more interesting scenarios than that. I almost never publish a third place finish anymore but I loved this game because it perfectly shows where black is at on the skill curve for these settings. He's fast, he's aggressive, he understands card blocking, he understands border diplomacy. The next level up for him would be to work on his empathy and prediction; why did magenta choose to take that card? Did they have other cards? Did they have better cards? Does trying to card block them force them into orange or into me? He's not the bully, I am.

I wonder if when Pete first broke black he had left a small stack in Germany if that would have worked out differently. I think that is the only real spot things may have changed, because no one had Germany so maybe trading there could have diffused the tension. Then again it may have just been wasted troops. What I really dont get is the people criticizing Pete for the way he played the rest and his analysis of blacks play. One thing everyone seems to be forgetting is the "Good Luck" that they dropped when Pete broke. That is the classic way of saying "this means war", and was likely the moment black decided to fight to the bitter end. Some people just have a small threshold for creating a mortal enemy, and that break was blacks. All of us have experienced that player that gets broken once and just goes completely ape shit, so it should not be too hard to grasp. A better player would have realized they dont want war on two fronts, and toned it down by taking at least one turn to trade single spots in Russia. Given the hyper aggressive retaliatory break, the "Good Luck" on the first break, the attempted card block WAY too early in the game, and not giving a cap card I think Pete analyzed this player perfectly: A good player who needs to work on empathy and prediction to improve.

I do like your line of thinking here for breaking black not orange. Orange might've been less upset about it. Sacrifice that one bonus to trade cards. But strategically, you're starting a war between orange and white. I think if black could see that's what you're doing they'd be happy to trade in their own bonus. I mean, strategically you breaking their bonus is great for them, you only hold one bonus (though it's a nice sized one) white and orange are dumping troops into each other letting black take bonuses to the west, and ultimately the fact that they have expansion options and you don't they're in an advantageous position for first. And you know that one of your best skills is knowing when to pounce. That you'll identify from context clues when you'll have the chance to chain the orange kill into the white kill to put you in that advantageous position. But the risk didn't pay off, black just couldn't pick up what you were doing based on context clues. I think not just empathy, but retaliating in kind, would benefit their gameplay greatly, you break my bonus, I break one part of your bonus, and we go from there. A really interesting game to watch, even if sad since as a viewer I'm always rooting for the peteman.

I'm curious about yours and others comments about the fact that black not giving you any cap cards was an aggressive or unfavorable play. Also, I did note when you decided on an adversary to card trade, that your thinking of “forcing Orange to go after white” was a miscalculation- you didn’t realize how weak white WAS at that point, but you chose to break your neighbor black 8 troop…and you couldn’t defend against the retaliation effectively. Your capital provided most of your defense at the bottom going into orient. Ultimately a bad call, you were caught and that’s why the 3rd place finish.

It’s more of the fact that Pete hit once for a single card, black responded with breaking him and setting Pete down to 3 territories. it’s not really the most diplomatic way of handling things black decided to try to bully Pete after one break which lead pete to resent him. I personally feel it’s kinda simple pete acted in desperation and black responds with aggression
@owenjauregui
@owenjauregui 2 дня назад
1st: Black broke Pete without giving any capital cards. If he had given Pete Cap cards then maybe they could have worked together with Pete working on orange and Black working on white. 2nd: Pete saw that white was massive so he assumed that the next person on the chopping block would be black; which would have been the correct call if white hadn’t missed the Blue kill. Not only did white miss the Blue kill but he also fed the kill to Blue causing both White and Blue to die to Black. 3rd: Once black set-up the card block, there is no going back for Pete, he has to hope that Orange would press his advantage on Black which he didn’t. My conclusion: Pete would have gotten 2nd (maybe 1st) if either Orange or white were any good.
@nabedane
@nabedane 2 дня назад
Really confused by black. Going heavily negative killing you, not even getting a trade back, they might have lost it to orange despite their huge speed advantage. 0 diplomacy skills or that's just the way they play. Because I refuse to believe that a player who is good neighbor in the early game, steals a bot kill, kills the former snowballer, tries to cardblock you and hits you hard without ever opening your cap, did not know that you had no other choice than breaking him for a card. Black was a good player, they might still have won this and if they did, kudos to them. You can hate them for their lack of diplomacy skills but at least they played ballsy and made kills and progressed the game. I prefer that over the passive cap stacker Master.
@risk_live
@risk_live 2 дня назад
Pete was always gonna get card blocked from that cap. He should have just saved his troops to make a big off cap stack when needed. Trade with black until then because orange was going to have to push into black eventually. Let them run into each other and then enter the fray. By antagonizing black Pete had an enemy and no way to enter the fray later because his troops were already depleted.

I think because you broke all his bonuses, your statement about him needing to realise you only did it for a card may be invalid. What he did do was keep you off your bonus, but he would not have won if you had also defended more and not let orange slowly strangle white. White losing was what causes black to continue to expand and ultimately kill blue, who should have seen black as being aggressive and him and white keep black down with you You needed to kill orange in fact and steam roller the board from Asia and Africa and let black have nearly all of Russia until he reached your cap. Which brings up another point, I have rarely seen you not let the aggressive player come and open your cap, which is yours and Kilted's classic moves, you struggled using 5 or 6 troops far to many goes due to this, so again orange and bullying him out of Asia was the play.
@nabedane

Yeah if I had known orange was trash that would have changed my decisionmaking for sure. Assuming a level playing field in ability I want orange snowballing out of the bottom, contesting white, eventually contesting black and I clean up. As soon as black tries to card block me that changes again to: now I'm going to dedicate all my resources to taking him down with me, which I very nearly did.
@nabedane
@nabedane 2 дня назад
@FreePete I think your big problem was white messing with the bot and feeding it to black instead of killing it himself. This allowed black to chain the blue kill into the white kill and becoming so strong they could just kill you. Otherwise they would have never been in the position to kill you, you could have been passive for a couple rounds waiting for black and orange to hit each other and then join the action. Noobs are often throwing the game unfortunately. In hindsight do you think blacks retaliation could have been seen as giving you cards without having to break your bonus and what made him trying to card block you was you breaking all his shit after he simply gave you cards?
@FreePete
@FreePete 2 дня назад
@@nabedane If black wanted to play favourably with me, (why would they after I broke their plus 8) they open my cap. If they're not good enough to see that (which is my read) then they get what they get. I have no problem provoking someone into taking a very marginal kill on me. That was a funny way to go out and a great cathartic ending for the show.
