I think you guys missed one of the most important traits about Subaru, and that is at the end of everything, he's a decent person. Self-loathing, weakness and cringy bits aside, Subaru is the kind of person who would go out of his way to help someone. He might be a bit dense about how he goes about it, but he actually cares for the people around him, and in general doesn't see people as means to an end unless he's desperate. It takes a while for him to figure out methodology when he's desperate (arc 3), but he'll look for the result that costs the least in regards to other people. He hated that some of Crush's soldiers were killed or blanked out during the Subjegation of the White Whale. Before Petelguese possessed him in the first go around at Arlan village, he was torn up that Wilhelm was hurt and that so many people had to die just to get a victory. He could just as easily told Beatrice that he was that person instead of having to deal with her bullshit. It can take a few attempts, but in the end he wants the best possible outcome for everybody, even the people he probably couldn't put a name to. In the village he didn't just play with the kids, he listened to them, heard their stories and their dreams for the future, and remembered them. Subaru would make friends with anyone who asked it of him. Underneath all the foolish ambition, the false bravado, and the self-loathing is a person who genuinely cares about people... it just took him a while to get past his own ego and his own failings.
That's a super good point. It's something I think wolf and I have so internalized, it's easy to forget to mention that about him. We actually discuss his morals a bit in the next episode so stay tuned! -Connor
1:39:30 in theory Subaru gave the first “Rem speech” to rem at the end of episode 11 that’s where she learned how to help someone to move forward and he learned form her speech. I think it’s nice everyone learns form each other from what they give and take when forming bonds with each other
I feel like I relate to Subaru in a sense. If I recall correctly during season 2 of the anime he mentions how he starts skipping school one a week, then every other day, then eventually just stopping. Back in high school I was considered the "class intellectual" of my year and going into college I felt this overwhelming sense of "who am i really?" beside these grades and achievements I would get academically. Like who am I really? Slowly I started to skip college classes. At first every other day, then eventually for weeks, then I just stopped going to college. I struggled with an intense sense of identity. Of living up to the expectation of my family that just weren't possible. I really appreciate that the Re:Zero goes into he's previous life in a way I haven't seen other isekais do. Because it was very grounding (and also relatably cool) to reality that Subaru could be any one of us. An individual carrying alot of flaws from his past but in the end learning to accept and work with his present to create a better future for himself and those he loves.
It might be a little harder to do, but I'd love to see one on Wilhelm and the Astrea family in general. Wilhelm in EX2 is like night and day compared to the Wilhelm we see today, and we even see one of his comrades from the Civil War in season 1 during the White Whale fight (the guy that does the bro shake with Wilhelm before they set out to the Flugel tree). A lot of his brothers in arms and old acquaintances really shaped Wilhelm into who he is today.
@@seanjohnson3401the biggest problem I have is people missing that he's not a role model but a train wreck of a man... Just like there needs to be a comment adding that Subaru is actually a good guy, for that there'd need to be comments that Wilhelm, despite sometimes trying to better himself, really didn't do much good for anyone. White whale? Great but a distraction from his tormented family. Helping Crusch? He literally admitted he never really committed to following her as a servant and did it all for the whale hunt. Demihuman war, he gradually went from only killing the enemy(with a just cause despite being doomed) to protecting his friends as a priority(still on the unjust side and it's not like they stop being racist to demihumans much). The friends he had who actually saw things correctly like Grimm and Carol wanted him to do better but didn't really get treated well and he ultimately avoided them in the time he was chasing the whale. He's a guy who regressed a lot and it's annoying seeing him glamourised when the story is constantly pointing out his regression.
Having recently finished Ex 5 I am craving a deep dive on Al so much, I need as much Al content injected in my veins, and I’m real curious what you three think of him as well. Another banger podcast as always.
in the anime they shifted some scenes from the LN around. in the LN Subaru doesn't panic yet after the "it was me, Roswaal" scene. after that he runs into Emilia and has a talk with her in which he realizes that he himself truely never believed that Emilia could do it (proving Roswaal right). that was the final push that lead him to running through the woods in a panic
Great stream guys. I love discussions that give me insights I never considered. Like how shamak represents lonliness. Heck; that talk made me realize that Minya represents Beatrice’s frozen time in the library. Tappei is such a good writer bro I swear lol
I don’t think I had to grow out of a parents shadow quite like Subaru but I am a twin which usually leads to being seen as one half of a whole and as an adult I moved over 1000 miles from home without knowing anyone but inversely no one knew me or my family so I relate to his situation in season one and how liberating it feels
That was an old design from the original ReZero Podcast with Seatactics and Wolf! The art is Shrederica by Gear ☺️ we can see what we can do about circulating the art again!
