Every year it's the same culprits in Bangkok. It's all the cars sitting in traffic, it's the old diesel buses, it's people burning too many incense sticks… yes, that was actually used a reason to explain Bangkok’s bad air at one stage last year during Chinese New Year.
Of course all those things contribute to the city’s pollution but are far from the main problem.
From December to April each year Thailand's capital city skies became grey with a smog and haze, some days Bangkok ranks in the worst cities in the world for air pollution during this period. But the buses, industry and people during intense sticks are much the same all year round, but the smoke and haze problem is mostly limited to just the months between December and April. So why?
There’s two critical factors at work here. Firstly the annual monsoon, as the airflow flips around the end of November each year from a south west airflow, sweeping moist air out of the Indian Ocean into Thailand, to a north east airflow where drier air is swept down from the Asian continent.
That change of the monsoon also coincides with the annual burns season where farmers burn off their harvested plantation… mostly rice, corn and sugar. Most of these farm areas are to the north and north east of Bangkok.
Put these two phenomena together and you get the drier, north east airflow blowing smoke and haze down from the country’s north and north-eastern farmlands. The problem can be bad enough in Bangkok, but central Thailand and the north suffer even more from the choking smoke and the seasonal public health fiasco.
For reasons, probably mostly commercial, the Thai government have been reticent to directly address the annual burn off season, SAYING that they’re going to crackdown on illegal burning, but never following through with effective enforcement.
Instead, prodded by the media, the Government rolls out its PR machine and invites the media to take photos of water cannons blasting thousands of litres of valuable water into the sky, doing precisely NOTHING to address the air pollution problem.
For some reason there appears to some officials who actually think this grotesque waste of water is achieving something... beyond a woefully ineffective media stunt.
All this obfuscation from officials and the government is completely ignoring the PM2.5 micron "elephant in the room”… the annual burn off season.
In truth the problem in Bangkok is little to do with the traffic, buses and local industry. Of course, it’s a contributor but a tiny fraction of the bigger, deliberately lit, plantation fire issue.
A long term solution is to subsidise proper machinery for Thailand’s farmers to clear the land mechanically, rather than the cheaper burning of the crops. Districts could share the cost of the necessary machinery, with individual farmers and companies hiring the equipment when needed.
Today it’s easy to track all the fires, clearly identified by NASA satellites, in almost real time. It’s a free website that anyone can log onto… even Thai government officials. You can see the active fires in Cambodia, Vietnam and Myanmar as well, but there is a big concentration in central, northern and north-eastern Thailand.
You can see clear evidence of exactly where the smoke is coming from… matched with the daily weather forecast which provides the direction and strength of the winds.
There’s even a simple site like Air Visual which lists the air quality around the country, and the world for that matter, any time of the day… district by district, suburb by suburb.
The information from Air Visual clearly links the poor air quality with the fires that are burning. All this information is free… it’s not rocket science.
At some stage the Thai government and compliant officials will be forced to bite the bullet and admit that the annual pollution problem is what it is - a cover up to protect large and powerful multi-nationals and their agricultural pursuits.
Not until these issues are honestly tackled will Bangkok, and the northern parts of the country, going to be spared from this annual, critical, public health issue.

I live in the rural district of On Tai (San kamphaeng), Chiang Mai, and can state categorically that the majority of burning in this area is NOT from farming practice, but from intentionally set forest fires. The valley floors and plains are nearly all rice paddy and only rarely are fires set for clearing stubble and even then only on a small scale, and yet all of the surrounding hills are on fire from early February through to the end of April. Sometimes the same mountain forests are set on fire multiple times over this period. The AQI readings for pm2.5 in March last year were over 900, by far the worst air quality in the world. In 2017, there were 23,800 premature deaths recorded in Thailand, a government health study has shown that the majority of these deaths were directly attributed to the poor air quality in the North of Thailand. Add to this the elderly, along with those who suffer from respiratory illness, the numbers are obviously going to be much higher. Now, this is a story that deserves the attention of the media. What do you call it when illegal and belligerent activity costs lives? "Manslaughter" isn't it?
@murrayfranklyn84

I have been told the reason they burn the forests is to get certain mushrooms that sell for a high price.

@@murrayfranklyn84 that is one reason, yes.. the monetarisation of mushroom foraging has enticed locals to burn huge areas of forest, whereas previously, the locals only collected for their own personal consumption.

About 4-5 years back an in-depth article appeared on the Chiang Mai section of Thaivisa web site. Memory says it was the desertion for a PHD, at that uni. It stated that the massive increase in pollution was due to the recent, 20-25 years, burning of sugar cane, waste. It named the company that was encouraging farmers to grow sugar cane, instead of rice. The government wanted to reduce its large bill for importing oil/ gasoline and having found that ethanol could be mixed with gasoline so giving us E20, E85 biofuels, the ethanol produced from home grown sugar cane would make a large saving on the import bill. Very extensive write up, memory says it lasted 24 hrs in print then was gone, can’t upset a major advertiser. Truly a government problem, big money. John

Air pollution has cost an estimated 9,500 deaths in Bangkok alone in 2020. Air pollution also cost approximately $3,700,000,000USD in Bangkok in 2020. According to study done by IQ Air and Greenpeace Asia. Perhaps the Thai government should prosecute this threat to public health with the same zeal as with COVID-19.

The fire burning in the NE doesn't make much sense because air quality in the NE is better than in Bangkok. I have a hard time believing the smoke magically accumulates in Bangkok after it has already dispersed in the NE. The real issue is probably due to air inversions where the cooler air from northern Asia goes over top of the warmer, wetter air in Bangkok. The air in Bangkok thus becomes trapped and the local pollution does not get dispersed. This is the origin of the famous "smogs" of Los Angeles. Doubtless the burning in the NE and North (Chiang Mai can get very bad) contributes but I lived in Bangkok and KL and the smoke in KL was clearly associated with the burning of vegetation in Sumatra and even smelled like it. Smoke in Singapore, closer to Sumatra was worse than KL. The pollution in Bangkok is of a completely different character.

Great report. Please follow this up in the future, as it is such a completely unnecessary form of pollution. The remaining crops can be harvested (as you show) and actually can be used for various purposes and the cost covered for the machines, if the government wants to support this. It has been changed in many countries around the world for the last 20 years, so I believe its time for Thailand to get in some experts that have overseen this in other countries.

My wife's family grow sugar cane here in the Centre and they do not set fire to their fields. Instead, large combine harvesters are used and another contractor comes later to collect all the waste, which is used for something. It's a similar story with rice. Some have the straw baled and it is sold, others burn it and so miss out on additional profit. I don't know why and whether there is another reason than ignorance.
@scottdavidplumlee8155

@PeterHendricks59

@@manfredwissemann3776 No to both: the cut leaves are sold to a company that turns them into bio fuel. They get the contractors in and all my inlaws have to do is cash the cheque. However, there is one downside: the ash is free fertiliser, so after the harvest they plough between the rows of plants (which are still there) and then fertiliser is applied.

When flying into or out of Chiang Mai during the smoke season at night, even driving you can't help but notice kilometres of controlled burning through the mountains. This in my opinion is the No1 cause of smoke in Thailand, just like the BIG fires in Australia. What's the reason, mushrooms? I doubt it. I've now listened to 2 Thai nationals one who's government job was to oversee those deliberate Northern fires before he eventually quit in disgust. The whole smoke situation is a BIG business just like the US weapons industry with many well paid positions high up in the ranks who wouldn't want their life of luxury to stop. Take what you will from the above because its another of Thailands dirty secrets.

Your most recent article on the subject (link below) does a much better job of explaining the complexities of this problem. On the day this article was published it is easy to see, from the wind and fire maps, the majority of smoke blowing into BKK is coming from Cambodia. The reality is, even if Thailand stopped burnings BKK would still suffer badly from the smoke generated by its neighbors. Chang Mai, on the other hand, would benefit greatly.

So realize the pollution contribution due to vehicles and industry at this point is far more than the burning season. However the confluence of the burning season with wind direction / weather etc ALONG WITH VEHICLES , INDUSTRY AND PEOPLE, EXAGGERATES THE TOTAL POLLUTION.

The amount of fields there are now because of huge multi national companies are not comparable or compatible with the old ways. I think subsidies for equipment is a must. I'd like to personally thank the government for all the cancer, strokes and heart disease that they're allowing to happen, through their complete lack of leadership on this issue. Who needs air that's fit to breathe anyway....

Sincere question, Bob: Are you and others who choose to live in Thailand (with the "cancer, strokes and heart disease, and no air that's fit to breathe") stuck in Thailand because of Covid maybe? If not, why do you continue to live there (or, are you forced to in other ways)? Cheers

@@worldsbestwatcher3735 that's a separate issue. I would maintain that government's everywhere should make an honest effort to give people a non-toxic environment in which to live.

@@user-gj7tc6gt2p I just don't understand someone's personal decision to live in a country dealing with and ranting about all the bad things you mentioned. I assume your home country is a much healthier place to live in. No? It's not India is it? Or worse, UK. Then I'd understand. ha

@@worldsbestwatcher3735 that's ok. You don't need to understand my life, nor I yours. I maintain that people have the right to clean air. Cheers!

@@user-gj7tc6gt2p Oh, I think I get it now. You're sacrificing your health and well-being in order to improve the health and well-being of the children in Thailand. That appears noble ... on the surface.

I doubt of precision of iqair.com measurement. From the regional index map, the heat over Hanoi city is more red than BKK (yellow) but the AQI over BKK is higher, WTF !?

Its all true what you are saying, and people do not want the truth. I think you need to check where your passport is kept, you may be taking a flight home soon.

There is actually very little wind from the north inland and central Thailand. This is why the smoke hangs around. The farmers have burned for hundreds of years. It's in their DNA. The villages burn all their rubbish as well. Usually everyday and cook with smoky fires that pretty much burn.all day. They aren't extinguished. Trying to change this mentality will be a huge challenge. They cannot afford gas cookers or electric stoves. The problem is not just restricted to Thailand. All their neighbours do the same.
