Cost of living gone up noticeably all over the world. Also note how many products come out in new packaging trying to hide they made the product inside 10% smaller.
My cost of living per month here in Perth, Western Australia, including all the things you have as well as mortgage, credit cards etc, is AUD$8900 per month. And I'm not even eating out as much as I'd like, or going to the movies, buying clothing etc. It's getting ridiculous here, all by design.

A bit personal asking me to give my budget for all to see! 555 Am 66, an expat american and live in Pattaya. $1500 social security pension monthly is what I spend, 54,000 baht currently. Food, alcohol, cannabis and companionship is around 40,000 baht. No rent as I own, utilities + phone 3000, Health insurance 6,000, Subscriptions 1000, Special like dental or acupuncture or dermatology, (not covered for) 5000 Laundry, massage, coffees, fruit shakes, 2000. Damn already over budget. Don't own transportation. Am frugal, yet love Thailand and would rather give as much of my pension to local Thai people than spend on myself. Always have a backup of 25k USD in U.S. bank as well as the 1M baht in Kasikorn I keep for retirement visa . Peace and Love Y'all
Interesting vlog! I love it! So I guess the cost of living is slightly up from months before, but it's understandable because of what's happening around the world and the transition between summer and the rainy season. As for my Thai family of four, our cost of living on a lower budget is around 25,000 THB, mostly spent on the car and food & meals, with no travel out of the area.
I live on a Thai island in the south gulf. I pay around 50,000 baht a month all in. Single man, I eat dinner out every day. It could be much cheaper, but I also dont drink, don't smoke, dont pay for companionship! So it could also be more expensive.
Visited the south of Thailand recently for a two week holiday. Airbnb in a beautiful house on a fabulous island. I live in Cambodia. Food, even on this little island both eating out and in store was noticeably less expensive than Cambodia as was the cost of electricity.
@@holyjon Hi. It was Ko Yao Noi. It’s quiet and not very developed. We loved it but it’s very definitely not for “party people”. We stayed in what was once a traditional fisherman’s house, though it’s certainly been extended since then, called Fisherman’s Cottage which we found on Airbnb.
Just spent 3 weeks in a very rural area of chaiyapoon with a family of 9 People electric bill is only 1600 for a month 3 houses but only 1 fridge freezer,3 TV and fans only ,as a tourist it's not easy to spend much money,but no real commitments long term ....but loved it never the less (apart from the flies and mozzys 555)
More or less hit the nail on the head with your cost analysis . I lived out in the sticks in Isan for two years but moved to Hua Hin four years ago. The actual cost between rural living and Hua Hin is identical. The only difference is rent or cost of land. The only issue I dissagree on is the statment on visa requirements. You don't have to bank 400K/800k Baht. An income letter from your embassy suffices
I would say you are correct. I am living on 30,000 baht per month in a Thai village running a pick up truck and a small motorbike. I have not reached pension age yet but currently the UK state pension is £950 per month => 42,750 baht.
I live with my partner in one of the main thai cities up north. I rent a condo with access to a large swimming pool and a gym. I own a pickup truck and a motorbike. My total annual spend is less than US$7k/yr. That's less than $600/mo or ฿22k (for 2 people), and I don't feel I'm being particularly stingy or miss anything in life. I suspect kids are the main money drain...
As I said before I’m doing quite well on 35-37000b in receipt of former bank pension , in northern bkk , electricity 1500b, food 10,000b , insurance 4000b , I rarely drink , I eat well and travel about the city & country too , money in uk account as back up 😊
@@thenakedguru Well, 22k is around 55% of 39k, so pretty far off in my case - nearly half. If I had to spend 17k more I'm really not sure what I'd spend it on 555

I'd say your calculations are pretty close. In Rangsit our monthly costs can range from 20,000-35,000 so I can't imagine things changing all that much moving to the countryside. Have a question unrelated to the video- Do you have experience when it comes to incubating chickens or ducks in Thailand? Does it seem to be profitable or worthwhile venture? Trying to explore where we can diversify things on the farm there in Nong Khai, thanks!
For reference we have around 150-200 ducks now for egg laying only, but are looking into expanding those numbers via incubation if the $$ makes sense compared to buying ready to lay ducks or if its just profitable on its own.
Thanks for sharing the amount for each information that you had information about the amount that you have to pay per month in Rural Thailand as when I exchange for checking how much does it cost in Singapore with my dad, he said the same like yours in different ways to explain for me.
I also live in rural, Thailand a few beers for me everyday, our ten year old son mini bus to school, food...... obviously we don't have animals or a farm.... family of three, we get by with 48,000 Bath & save some..... obviously we don't pay rent as we own our house.
I am in the UK now and have been since mid April and without any doubt if you shop in BigC,Tesco,Tops etc meat is very little different to the UK.I bought 3 sirloin steaks in Waitrose today for £12 good and tender.Go to Aldi and Lidl which are Ok and it's definitely cheaper for just about everything. Even local markets in Thailand are having constant price rises.
Big cars aren't selling at present! People cannot afford the cost even when buying on credit terms. A 25% slump in cars sales has been reported. It's getting bad for people in manufacturing here. Thais need to make more here and buy less that they could make!
My wife and I + her mum spend about 50k/month all in. We don't watch the pennies too much so for that we live comfortably and the cost of some decent Scotch Whisky is included :)
I read a few of the comments a fair few people are ending up in the same sort of ball park. Add my name to that list. Theoretically you can do it for less but you won’t because not having family and kids just means you have more time on your hands to spend on travel, eating out or whatever grabs your fancy. But one thing I think people may be excluding is the big one off depreciable items like a car. You buy one, think of petrol, insurance and maintenance but not replacement. Unless you're putting money away it comes as one big hit after 10 or 15 years and in the countryside you really need one. The other thing is inflation, yes from a lower base, but if your income or assets generating income aren’t geared to this you may get a big hit.

We are in Khon Kaen at the moment visiting wife's family. If you own your own home and you have hobbies like gardening or homebrew then staying in Australia is the way to go. Plus the visa situation is precarious in my opinion. Coming for a few months is the way to go I think. Just this time we chose the wrong months. May was still too hot. Perhaps Oct-Dec next.
Food & shopping is much cheaper. We spend £177 a week for two adults + 2 children in the UK and we eat lots of budget meals but spend about 80 pence a day on our two water filters. I can recommend surf shark as well and will be renewing it through this channel when it runs out. It's actually hot in Kent UK today around 27 degrees. Feels like 38 where we are not used to it 😂
Appreciate it and when I was last in the UK i went to Aldi and could not believe the value for money. The supermarkets are actually cheaper in the UK, especially for certain fruits!
@@thenakedguru the quality for fruit and veg at our Aldi (Canterbury) has gone downhill in the past months. We now spend more at Morrisons but the quality can also be lacking there with some items. All the jarred pickles over here are off. Weird times.
Thailand is for the young (under 80) especially if you come from countries that have universal healthcare and unemployed benefits, as once insurance becomes unaffordable or impossible to get in Thailand then the risks of high hospital visits even in public hospitals gets very unaffordable!
A bit more practical and a bit less philosophical, but still another fine, and informative, vlog. :) By the way, what do you think about single - no wife/gf, no kids - farangs moving out to rural Thailand? Particularly those who are fresh off the plane from the West? In general, I happen to think it is a bad idea, since younger singles will find it to be too boring, middle-aged singles will find it to be too limiting, and older singles will find it to be too difficult. I think this actually applies to living in rural areas of most countries, but even more so when the single person may not speak the local dialect nor understand the local culture. Ofc, there will always be oddball exceptions, but.... Just my 2 baht of personal, and definitely not professional, opinion, but I'd like to hear your take on the subject.
Super market foods in Thailand are generally more than the UK (like for like & overall), the UK super markets being excellent value & quite possibly the cheapest in all western countries, maybe one of the cheapest worldwide.
This isn't particularly true. Sure a few things are cheap, but meat, bread, milk etc are pretty expensive. Uk food prices have increased massively in last few years.
@@jacklacoste9026 Meat went up 30% granted, then reduced around 15%...still inexpensive compared to most countries, Inc Thailand. Milk...fresh 2ltrs £1.30. Bread...decent stuff £1.05 - £1.39 800gm loaf. Cheap cheap cheap. No idea where you're shopping, but I'd say get yourself to your nearest Aldi.
I came back to the uk in january i think at thailands macro beef mince and chicken breasts were about half the price of the uk supermarkets only milk and imported western items were more expensive
i live up North nr CM and spend 50 K a month including 4k daughter school expenses , 4k health insurance. I have car loan in my wifes name 6k ( ends Jan) . The 50 k also includes cat/ holidays and ccs 6k. We own our house so expenses lighting/gas /internet 3k , and repairs/replacements 1k , food 10k , entertainment 5k , sundries 2k. Tbh 50k is the high side for me and includes a 5k whim purchses and a contigency fund (but thats because my wife works and helps out with extra and drink /food expenses , health and beauty costs like dental care. )

Our life style is far from being luxurious. If I heard correctly, N.G. is living on ฿62 000.- monthly, same as us. My wife owns the house, so rent free, no health insurance since the premiums doubled at age 75. (never used it anyway). Although we have a vegetable and fruit garden, ducks and chickens, generous and helpful in-laws,we spend , easily: ฿8000.- on meat and stuff on the day my pension comes in. Then it's another ฿2500 in the untouchable savings box, money in my grandchild and great-grandchild's savings accounts, so that's ฿10 000 gone before I fill up with petrol (E20, as advised by the maker and the car has 250 000 K on the clock), Then there's the house maintenance and unexpecteds: new pump for the fish pool, PC monitor, concrete mixing trough, machine repair. Etc. So now, halfway through the month, we have ฿10 000.-in the bank, which should be OK but leaves little for emergencies, we will doubtless be off to Macro or the market next week.
Health insurance $400 in Thailand? I thought healthcare was cheaper in Thailand? Can you elaborate on why you have to pay so much given that there is free stuff for Thai people. Are there huge gaps in coverage that necessitate this or can you self insure if you have enough money in the bank?
The hospitals are more and more having a different price for expats and locals. Also most expats don't want to go the the government hospitals. I have had two operations here in Thailand. Optical gallbladder removal, and retinal detachment laser surgery. Both came to around $700 US dollars each at the government hospital. I got a quote from a private for the gallbladder removal that around $5500. In the government hospital I had to share a room with 5 others, private room at the private hospital. My wife had a her thyroids removed at a private. Five days in a 2 room private hospital room, total cost came to $2100 US dollars. She is Thai, I am sure if it was me it would have been a lot more.

Just retired the second time (USAF 20 yrs) / ( DoD 23 years), so were making plans to spend two to three months a year in Thailand, my wife is from the Ubon area, they have a nice house with some land, problem for us is transportation. We must be neighbors. I live near Khong and spend about the same as you. No rent, car paid for, 2km from the farmers market. Electric less than 2K baht a month, 2AC, pump for the house, and one to water the garden and fruit trees on 3 rai. Eat at home, don't drink, smoke, and my wife keeps an eye on me.

Can easily eat for 2 or 3 dollars in Bangkok Get help from locals or long term expats Go to terminal 21 near Asok station or 20 other food courts. Same in Pattaya. Ask the office workers or students where to eat. I spent 3 months in Pattaya 3 separate trips Nevsr spent 1000 and made over 1200 working online 12 hours a week.
Aa usually back for a few months in thailand and we've found thailand is getting expensive and I can only compared to NewZealand where it's expensive, buying groceries at places like Lotus and big c is almost ate the same leven I very expensive buying most on the local markets is still cheap, but I clearly see people can't afford places like big c and lotus only good thing there us the air conditioning but anything else much too expensive, personally we both feel Thailand is not progressing and in some places going backwards althoug still feels hood to be here ❤

Not sure about bang for buck, the bush and water here is still pretty good here, nothing wants to bite you, infrastructure is really slipping but seems light years ahead even in the smallest towns, food from what I've seen is far cleaner here with less pollution, far more eco friendly here. On the other hand. At least for down south we just have clouds and often rain, seeing the sun is nearly news worthy, Need about 2 years wages for a house deposit, A single chicken egg can be over $1 from the supermarket (if you shop at those places about $200/person/week if you like cheap carbs), medical is affordable there, you can die on the wait list here.

I only know about Cape Buffaloes in Africa, but Elephants keep their distance because the buffaloes are nasty, bad-tempered & unpredictable. Also, weigh almost a ton, stand almost 6 feet & have enormous horns. Not sure if same in Thailand.
The facts are that Thai GDP last figures ran at a negative $2.4Billion. Inflation is running at a given 13%. They are buying more than they are selling / producing! China takes 13% of Thai GDP. Electric cars are stacking up as the markets slump! It's going to be tough ! If you have money outside of Thailand --use it with care as the rates will change preferably! Sad for the locals but the reality is there!
Well unfortunately we are seeing global inflation. Especially people moving to cheaper options has become an epidenic in itself, raising denands which raise prices.

I still think it's worth a look, poke a stick at some old stuff, give someone a hand in your trade and try out some rice whiskey, have yarns to some people that hang out a few ks away from home, not pay $16 for a pint, fix your faulty bits cheap. There are some cheap rentals/leases around Thailand and Cambodia, doesn't seem cost effective for a real-estate agent/advertising. Just seen stories online of people finding a rough cheap place. People sign up for a year for $1800 baht/month. and do a few handy man jobs on a place needing a bit of care.

To be honest I'm doing the same thing during my 3 month visit to Thailand that I would be doing in Australia minus the working, pottering around in the garden.
Not sure if there’s an issue with his electric layout or if the family around is bundled together… I pay a similar amount (sometimes less, but I have more electric appliances and A/Cs running 24/7/325… he should pay less. I say 325 instead of 365 because there’s actually because there might be a few days in Winter where is not needed. Anyway 4,000 THB is way less than the average that I would pay on a similar setup in my home country (almost x3 more).

playing music at bar is more difficult than years back when you had jazz lounge. Immigration police is monitoring all the time who are on stage... it is dangerous for falang musicians, even some Karaoke singer was arrested in Hua Hin! , maybe she was too good and too often in same bar 😅 this thing makes me look perhaps for some other countries, althought i like Thailand very much....

I dont really get it. Who thinks about costs when it comes to kids? In rural East Africa, it is a lot cheaper, but you want the kids to go on a nice school. And you want your family to be happy. But ok, I guess people have different goals.

These budget videos are not very helpful in my view unless the person sharing the information tracks their spending on an app and can share their spend over say the past 12 months. My minimum budget is tiny, but my total spend over the past 12 months divided by 12 is very high. This is because there are things that come up in an irregular fashion that are very expensive. My lowest spending month over the past 12 months was $1,726. My highest spending month was $5, 253. My average over the past 12 months was $3,171. I track every single cent that I spend so the average of $3,171 captures EVERYTHING.

Also, I've heard that the people of Thailand are very corrupt and money oriented. Read one story, where a mug spent his life savings on building a bespoke house with high walls to keep out 'unwanted guests', with every modern convenience in the house itself, for his then wife. As soon as the house was finished being built, a lot of strangers (all her relations !) started hanging around the property and when he finally snapped and told them to f@#k off, they manhandled him out of his own house, and threw him out on the street - was very lucky to escape with his life from what I'm told. Thais' play the long game - so just rent everything and never let them know where you are staying if you're only visiting - give a false Hotel name if need be !
He should have done a superficies agreement in which he would have control of the house for 60 years, before this he should have done due diligence on his wife and lived with her at least 10 years before building anything
No, no, no. This is typical Tuber, social media nonsense. Many people love to play the fantasy game of "I COULD spend less" but they don't. Sure this guy spends money on some things another wouldn't. But the things he spends money on also consumes his time. So you can not spend on those things but then you have time to fill. Can you fill that times at no cost?
I don’t think it’s nonsense since it is my actual budget - and if I didn’t have animals and kids that would be my actual spend - nonsense to me would be “you can live off $300 a month” like I hear from some out there 👍
Great video really valued this and has given me more insight before moving to Thailand next year. I’m confused on the health insurance price as $600 aussi would be 14,647 not 5000. Did you mean your private health is 15,000 thb a month or 5000 per month or is that per week ? Thanks heaps
