Festival goers, like myself, always return from such an event feeling alleviated as a festival brings a sense of community that we are somewhat lacking in the "real world". People say things like "I wish we could go on living like that" the thing is we can if we really want to. And I don't mean living in a tent and now washing for a week. I mean togetherness we experience and looking out for one another.
I agree with point of festivals as I have experienced it myself, However I am skeptical that the sense of community you felt, was just a surge of dopamine brought on by the excessive drugs, stimulation, and exoticaly dressed women around you. Also on the notion of community in such a setting, is it positive community? Or one of Comsumption, decadence and over indulgence?
While I haven't been a stranger to drug use at festivals the last few years I haven't taken anything, not felt the need to. I imagine there a certain festivals such as V, leeds/reading and download which require drugs just to get you though but I've out grown those festivals and V is probably the worst of the lot. Just a gathering of chavs with the worst atmosphere of all time. If you head to the right festivals then yes there is a positive sense of coming together and community...not at any of the aforementioned though trust me.
+Daniel Birchall Thank you both for the video and your comment, I think it's the perfect exemple. In festivals i feel like i belong to something. I ask water, people are happy to give me some. A guy asks me for a cig or anything I have, i'll do my best to help him. I even find myself caring for others if they are alone/in a bad shape without any ulterior motive. Some say it's the use of drugs only (friends & apparently people above me on comment list) but i think it's greater than that.. Sure common use of drugs and alcohol might have an influence, making people more open to others etc, but it's not all that. Otherwise nightclubs would have the same atmosphere, which is clearly not the case. I think it really comes to a sense of community brought by the crowd & our common love for music.
That's a rather generalised and narrow-minded view of festival goers. I mean sure those types of people are there (perhaps not as stereotyped as you make them out to be). There is a huge array of people who forego the festivals. Families, people of all creeds, cultures, colours and life styles routinely bustle amongst the mud, the sweat and the cheers. If that's not diverse then I don't know what is. It's certainly a lot more diverse than the segregated neighbourhoods most seem to live in whereby your ethnicity will determine weather you are the majority or minority within that area. Where living in a city densely populated can mean living a lonelier existence than those in rural cut off areas. Choosing a neighbourhood to live in is choosing a specific lifestyle. Yet living in that neighbourhood doesn't mean you'll be cosigning up with your neighbours any time soon. I appreciate your input but I don't feel it's in anyway saying anything other than exclaiming your own bigotry bias...ehem...(smiley face)
There's been a great example of this Truth recently here in Columbia, South Carolina. The extreme weather really brought us out and together, allowed the people to showcase their common good and love for one another. I'll never look at the community around me the same way, their some amazing people.

Thank you for this wonderful lesson! Most of us have a circle of people we deeply love and care about. We should just expand that circle as much as we can and that will make our lives much richer and more meaningful. So it is not about belonging to a group of people or to a club where you share the same interests and the same world view, but it is about constantly trying to feel that those people whom you label as " the others" don't really have that much of an otherness indeed. It is a good thought experiment to bring to mind the people you may know, who have the most different personalities, beliefs and life styles from you and then try to see how much you still have in common. I always remember a girl I travelled with in a train, she was a prostitute. I asked her for her name and she said: Jennifer, Paris or Vanessa, what you prefer:-) She opened a small glass of champagne with her teeth and offered me some and we had such a nice conversation. We told our lives to each other... If I told this to my family they would be horrified. But what's wrong with that? You better feel yourself at home in the world and talk to everyone. The time is really short. Sezen Aksu is the most beloved singer we have. In the lives of every one of 77 million people in Turkey she probably has a song. ( If you are curious listen to her song " Dua" ) I had the chance to see her live a couple of times, together with thousands of people. Before the concert begins, you think that if only someone brought up an issue about the Kurds, Armenians or Greeks, the people would end up swearing and beating each other, some of them being ready to die or kill for whatever it is that they stand for. But then when the concert begins, we all sing the same songs and cry for the same words as if we would all belong together, like fellow sufferers who all need the same cure. Well.. that's both very hope giving and terribly depressing...Still, we should cling to the hopeful side and always remember our shared humanity and behave accordingly. There is a wonderful video on youtube where the philosopher Michael Sandel answers this question: Where Does Our Instinct for Philosophy Come From? ( Just search for this title. ) Only 3 minutes. His answer resonates very much with the message of this lesson. Here is just a part of it: "I think the hunger for public life of larger meanings comes from the fact that it's not easy to create a life wholly within the terms of individual self-interest or self-seeking. Or even a life of individual ... individualism plus family life. There is, I think, a desire on the part of most people -- especially those of us who are fortunate to live in democratic societies -- not just to cultivate our own garden and to live a comfortable family life, but also to participate in shaping the courses that govern our collective thought; and to have a say -- a meaningful say -- in the collective destiny. And once we're pitched into a wider civic life ... once we lift our gaze from our own private pursuits and the well-being of our families to the public, or to the common good, then the values we care about ... the hopes and aspirations we have for the common good will unavoidably follow."

Tricky. Historically, humans have spent most of our existence living in very small and tightly knit groups of friends and families. Only very recently (past few thousand years) have we learnt to live in larger groups. Therefore, this sense of belonging to something larger is not, I believe, a necessary component to human satisfaction, in the same way that what we call 'private life' is. Very often, I think it can lead to a deep sense of loneliness. In fact, I think the way we experience 'community' is really through a series of interactions with a smaller sub-group of our closer friends. For example, we don't experience an entire war (a community event), but just a small part of it with the people we signed up with.
+Daniel Taylor Pretty much what I was going to say. The human mind evolved to deal with "communities" of 20-50 people. Today groups of this size aren't considered communities, but families or friendship networks. In fact, it is the very fact that we have communities of thousands or even millions of people is one of the very reasons we have a state-- back when we lived as hunter-gatherers, we saw no need for such a thing. These small communities we used to live in brought out the best in us. Back then, we did not go to war, oppress others, have inequalities and hierarchies or live as selfish beings. These are modern afflictions. So he is right in saying that most people are good, because they truly are, but having to deal with so many people doesn't come natural to us. Hence why our most famous modern communities are those like the KKK, the Nazis, ISIS, etc.
+wii3willRule I agree with the bulk of what you've said, but there are a couple of contentious points. Firstly, yes, there is no 'war' in most of human history, because there are no states, and territory was unmonopoliseable (if that's a word). That said, there was certainly bloodshed, but I think the closest modern day equivalent would be groups of football fans brawling, rather than state going to war. Whether things were 'equal' in these smaller societies is also contentious. I think it's probably better to hedge your bets and say that humans can certainly live and prosper in more egalitarian social environments, but that we can also live in environments with hierarchy as well. There are many examples of small-scale communities where a few men monopolised many women, for example. My personal belief is that all we can say in general about humans is that we are capable of creating and maintaining communities that have strict rules about how its members interact.

+wii3willRule There is certainly a large portion of the anthropological community who are committed to the idea that our hunter-gatherer ancestors were egalitarian. However, I find such comparisons fraught difficulties. Probably the best way to explain it is to think of the different way we act at a party with friends, or even in a shared house at university, and contrast it to the way we work act with the larger community (i.e. people we don't know). Within household interactions are certainly (normally) based on a completely different set of rules than interactions in the wider society, and I think it would be wrong to describe them as 'egalitarian.' Sometimes things are shared out equally, sometimes not. There can be bullying, people can be isolated, fights can break out etc. The behaviours in hunter-gatherers tend to be more varied because there's no outside institutions (the law) stopping people from doing what they want. Granted, there is a great deal of sharing in small-scale societies, in particular food, but I think that is largely because returns from hunting are so varied from day to day (think table full of snacks at a party). So I would say that the physical conditions of our ancestors meant that the sorts of social arrangements our ancestors made were 'egalitarian,' but that we have always been capable of other types of arrangements. As soon as the physical conditions changed (i.e. agriculture), the conditions were no longer in place, and other types of social arrangements evolved. We HAD to be capable of creating such social arrangements before (our minds didn't evolve in 3000 years), it's just that we didn't use them.
I don’t think we have learned to live in large groups and I don’t think our biology will ever let us. Our chemical biology is like goldilocks, the amount of people we can live with in a community and care for is set. The rates of bodily and psychological stress in urban environments is killing us but extremely downplayed (and even encouraged) in the name of economic progress. Being prosperous and community are like oil and water, unless someone considers having community as more important than gold (which I do) but societies can’t seem to have both.
Please, please watch! This is a key to a healthy happy life! The level of our fear of community today determines the depth of our personal abyss... Community is not the ideological soup that we are sold by religion, politics, and the media, but the circle of life that accepts each one of its participants as an essential part of completing it. We are all members of the eternal heart of compassion, love and kindness - the brotherhood/sisterhood of man!
I start to suspect that the most of people are nicer to each other in public, not because there are higher chances to get a punch in the face in the streets, but rather because on the internet we are alone, truly alone.
You mean like churches? The problem is that we saw the problems of communities. By people being influenced by the group to do horrible things, to believe things that are detrimental to themselves and the ones around them. The second world war comes to mind, with millions following behind the nazis and not even because they themselves were bad people, but because they were influenced by the group to the point of accepting what they were selling as something good. Community is a powerful thing. As a group you have strength, as a group you don't have to feel like the world pushes down on your shoulders. As a social animal, we thrive in groups. It increases happiness and it pushes us to actions of empathy. But the problems from being in groups stay the same. They can influence you in a negative way, especially when you tie down your identity with this group. When you are invested to such an extend that you can more easily accept things of this group that you wouldn't normally accept. I do agree with you. Community overall is a good thing. But you cannot dismiss the problems the same social tendencies bring that also brings us strength and happiness. Always be careful of the group - Not the people individually, but the group. And make sure you don't turn off critical and rational thinking because of the safety you feel
That's why it's important to have a sense of community centred higher principles than tribalism and the egotism associated with believing the creator of the entire universe is watching you or even has some divine plan for you. Both of these things can lead to bigotry and a breakdown in communication, reason and altruism towards people outside of the community. Communities should be centred around an acceptance of the facts of the life, both the knowable and the unknowable, allied to humble notions of gratitude for the finer things in life, especially each other.

Neveryoumind And this will be interesting, because you've shown that you accept that one group will be better than another. You have shown that groups can be ranked *objectively* and that we can use philosophy to do so. Now, just to ask, because I believe this will make the discussion more interesting: Should certain groups be made illegal, based on these possible criteria? Just to give you my side: I agree that certain properties of a group can make it inherently 'bad' (give rise to the possible problems given). While I think we can look into limiting the influence of 'bad' groups by limiting access to state funded services, I don't think this will work in current culture. Why not? Well, religion incorporates a lot of these properties as a means to keep the community as a solid unity. Current culture will not allow limiting this group based on such criteria, even if it could be shown that society would be objectively become better off I'm interested in your views
+Shangori It's a good point. This is why I think perhaps it may be good for us to be more conservative (less than is customary, still!) about our participation in "community", so that we can make sure we enjoy the pleasures, and avoid the pitfalls.
I am a very introverted individual. I prefer being alone and less with big groups and packs of friends. I dislike the clan rivalry we create with groups and packs. Yet, for me the community is such an important thing. And I still believe in it. As much as I'm an introvert, and a timid one, as I slowly started communicating with people I felt the same sentiment. People are nice for the most part when you are nice to them. For me this video isn't about the big communities of social and political forces. for me it is the community of individuals. where people contact with each other in very casual talks and small actions, exchange ideas in cheerful manner. it's the exchange of NICE UNKNOWNS :)
The thing about communities is that they aren't personal. Conflict arises when people get on a personal level. that doesn't happen in a community gathering such as a fall fair. Therefore conflict generally wont arise. This creates a mood of collective joy that can be very withstanding.
Anyone remember how it was right after September 11?! The entire world came together for a very brief moment. Disaster does NOT have to be the only thing to bring us together. Come on people now, smile on your brother, everybody get together, try to love one another right now.

YUP. A problem with modernity is the increasing anonymity of our lives. That we exist in little individual units, with some acquaintances we see often, some good friends and family we see once in a while, but mostly, never get that sense of community our forebearers did. A sense of community is key to happiness. It's hardwired into us.

I would say it is important to know between being in a community and a tribe, where anyone can join a community but tribes are more exclusive to certain traits and pin us against each other.
I feel like working in retail is a very decisive factor when it comes to one's opinion on ''most people''. When you get to see the consumerist side of humanity on a daily basis, it truly generates constant spite and resentment towards the general public. Even though deep down one knows that those people are just like everyone else and only a tiny part of their character is revealed when interacting with them in say, a huge department store, one often can't be helped but to feel disdain and bitterness. I personally would tend to assert that the workplace is the number one generator of general disenchantment and vague misanthropy. I deeply despite my job for what it did to my conception and liking of strangers and I'm quite certain that I can't be the only one to feel in such a way.
Your videos, and more importantly the subject matter and the questions you raise in them, I think are so vital in cutting through the BS in most of the media we consume and the doubts that plague our minds. This is why I don't think philosophy will die out, but instead will resurge in a booming renaissance, just as it has happened cyclically throughout human history. These videos are up here now and sooner or later, the questions they raise will spark the sentiments of a critical mass majority. I also suspect that it's going to be sooner rather than later; every person from every socio-economic standing today is weary and tired of the BS they have to put up with in their daily lives, be it from politicians' rhetoric or the severe lack of anything remotely stimulating on tv. I wanted to know what your thoughts might be on the possibility that the introduction of legal cannabis for medicinal and recreational use might act as a catalyst for this resurgence into philosophical enquiry? To me, it seems like the two would go together like hempcrete and wonderfully designed buildings; it just makes sense.
I always hated books like the heart of darkness simply because these kinds of books say that humans are evil underneath our "civilized" exterior. Yes, we can be bad and hateful, but those are not what we truly are, we are kind, loving and compassionate creatures. And we should never forget that.

I work in direct care, which isn't necessarily public sector but it's close, and I'll agree with you that I have felt some sort of judgement from business types, but as a whole I usually meet these types of people outside at some sort of community event, and I am including bars.
I am especially dissapointed with the comments on this particular video. To all the folks bringing up the KKK and ISIS, do us a favor and just spend your weekends inside staring at your phone.
+JP Sheehan I think it's quite healthy to have a discussion about both the light and dark sides of community. There is clearly value in people supporting each other, in banding together to fight against oppression, in avoiding alienation, and so on. But it's worth acknowledging that the lure of social support structures can make certain ideas seem more reasonable than they otherwise should. So yes to community but no to discarding all critical thought. Perhaps the best way to put it is that it is nice to belong but not so nice to be owned.
I have only had terrible experiences any time I try to embrace any community. I don't like communities and wish people would generally just interact with and help eachother bare minimum. Not that we should murder eachother in the streets just keep to ourselves and mind our own business
Now, this is strange. I avidly inform myself on the goings-on in the world, primarily politics and economy-relatable ones. I heartily discuss those with my friends, colleauges and family whenever such are discussed, especially the gloomy, sad and pressing'(quote this at your discretion) issues. Yet I see no narcissism and sociopathy you speak of. Sure, the world looks grim but I didn't "lose faith in humanity", felt an urge to "not live on this planet anymore" etc. I understand what sensationalism is and how news articles are ripe with it, and it takes some experience to get used to, but I can't wrap my head around the fact that so many can ahve their spirits broken so easily. Maybe I am a sociopath after all? :)
Did anyone else not relate to the premise/beginning of this video at all? "Community feels like it's for losers". What? I don't mean to sound holier than thou, but I've never thought like that. The fact that I can walk down the street 99% percent of the time without being physically or verbally attacked tells me that most people are pretty nice. I may not choose to interact with them all the time or involve myself in every activity that takes place in my community, but that's not because I think that people are selfish, unpleasant, dangerous or that community's for "losers". I'm just an introvert and too much noise/activity makes me anxious. That's all.

Hi Junaid, we are all in the same boat. No one is perfect. We all lie sometimes, partly because we want some privacy as we learn about life. We need to make mistakes sometimes. I'm a mum and I know that I have to deal with some disappointments. It's part of my job as a mum. I also disappoint myself quite often but that's life. Your parents will recover so just get on with your life and accept that mistakes are a part of life.

We are conditioned now that online communities are real and sharing information is sharing social interaction. Loneliness is not just something that affects the elderly in this country, young people are increasingly isolated and believe that Facebook friends are real.
yes ! that's why when ever people say "I've lost faith in humanity" when something bad/stupid/trivial happens it makes me sad. alternatively people say "faith in humanity restored" when someone did something "out of the ordinary" that acknowledges community os actually good and that majority aren't bad people. why are people so easily swayed by social media ? and why does social media want to pit us against each other ? is it a social commentary that we are secretly insecure / sad about our lack of real human connections instilled by fear ? what will the media have by creating a culture of fear ??? oh my goodness I am sleep deprived hahaha

Now if only we had community centers that weren't overly religious or mega-corporation sponsored. People could get together without having some weird bronze age fable "revealed" or some company bent on selling them a product. Then again, I suppose whoever funds the center naturally gets dibs on the messaging.

+peaufinage True, but I agree with School of Life's view on general humanism, so I don't mind what they're selling. To your other point, people being united without an agenda is a wonderful thing. One time at the local library, an Al-Hidayah class let out as group as a fighting-video-game tournament was being set up in a nearby room. In a short time, group boundaries dissolved over discussions on defeating the Magneto-Storm-Sentinel pairing and home theater equipment.
This video isn't biased, maybe it's a bit too optimistic. A community, of course, will be as good as the individuals making it up. If you have rotten people in it, you will not have a great time dealing with them. If a community needs too many rules and guidelines, it means it's not going to work. But there's always a weak link in there making it a shame. Maybe in the future as we all can define what it means to be human with our thinking and actions, we'll get more communities that work.
I don't know I wish i could agree with this video but my experience with a vast amount of people across different platforms has destroyed my view of people and communities. I am glad that this video does present a view which contrasts the media, but I feel as though this video is pushing the childish idea that most people are prosocial (good) when realistically people are selfish and narcissistic. This is still a good video.

We are all victims of culture. Now the question is: What will you use your mind for? I can honestly say not one of the images they start out with is associated with "community" in my mind. I am noticing a theme to many of these vids, they ASSUME, and then argue what they assume is correct. Maybe I am the exception, I do not know: but honestly never really be afraid to interact with people. Nor have I really ever cared what others thought... Life is only worth living IMO if shared with others.
Community without God is commu-nism. I don't mean that feciously, but it is also a problem for gangs or "clicks". As Catholics we take Holy Communion and join together as one. With all do respect, I believe that is the truest sense of community that we were intended for and what the human person is made to seek.
I like your approach into this, yet I can't help but think that this approach easily dismiss the negative behaviors that people exhibits when in a crowd. I do agree that people in the general sense is "nice" considering we live in a somewhat civilized world but they can easily turn away from that niceness when selfishness and interest occurs. Maybe I'm a bit cynical about this, since there's a lot of things to consider (such as how the media influences us or how authority figures reminds us of our lack of a voice, etc.), but isn't this too idealistic to the point of diverting away from reality?

It doesn't really matter if it's propaganda or not. This channel is proclaimed neutral, yet they're quite biased to both political matters and philosophical ones. That's the problem.

They try to make videos as short as posible (because longer videos cost more money and time, also short people attention span, etc.) and that's why they can't present you all down and up sides of the topics. They just give you something to think about. I could be wrong. And if I am, I will unsubscribe. :)
The problem is when community becomes nationalism, religious or classist identity... It makes fascism. Moreover, the capitalist idea of competition and individualism de-humanise us.
