There are actually two inceptions going on in this movie. If you think about it, Cob is also basically performing inception on himself to convince himself that he wasn't responsible for Mal's death. With every level down, they're going deeper into his own subconscious (Ariadne herself says this). And then, once he's in limbo, he tells his own subconscious, his version of Mal, that it wasn't all his fault and he didn't mean to kill her. He wakes up a new man, guilt at least mostly under control. Inception.

I would argue (more like this is a concept/theory I've seen passed around some fans of the movie so I'm gonna badly try to summarize it) it's actually three. The heist on Fischer of course, Dom's inception on himself (great point!) but also an inception on Saito. Think about it. The movie begins with a series of dream levels, which confuses you, the viewer, on what's real or not. But it's also purposefully meant to demonstrate to Saito what Dom and his point man Arthur can do as a test of skill. But how did Saito come into contact with Dom? It's a heist on Saito to show to him that Dom could be the man for inception. But what if Saito already had decided Dom and his team was it for the job of an inception on him? There's repeated lines of Dom & Saito saying to not become an old man, filled with regrets, but to take a leap of faith (which OUCH. take a LEAP of faith..... re:Mal.). That line is what bookends the movie. It's literally the inciting incident for the heist, Saito challenging Dom to rise to the task of preforming inception. But then by the end of the movie, the line is inverted on Saito himself by Dom to bring him out of limbo. It clearly holds some emotional resonance for Saito, as the line is what makes him remember Dom, recall that he was waiting for a friend. Saito also is brought along as the 'tourist' but he takes on a planning role with the group, and due to Ken Watanabe's equally brilliant acting choices, we see Saito become only truly alive and animated when he's particapating in the getaway in Mombasa, the heist planning, and the execution. When he's in the action and taking risks. He reminds Dom of the line when he is shot on the first level of the Fischer heist, and seems to gain strength by involving himself further with the insanely risky stakes of this inception, knowing that limbo awaits him. And yet he goes. And he comes back as renewed in his purpose as Fischer was emotionally absolved in his journey. And that's it. The third and hidden inception. It's Dom hiding an inception inside of a bigger inception. One commissioned by Saito on Saito himself, hidden in the guise of another inception. Remember, the idea must seem self generated. And so Saito gives rise to it himself-to take risks, to advance in his life both business and personal, to not become an old man, filled with regrets. To take a leap of faith.

I'm glad someone finally said it! Even as a little kid, I would get really emotional and start crying during the scene where Fischer finds the pinwheel. Honestly Inception is one of those rare movies that is only able to happen through a massive amount of luck. It required a writer that understands non-linear story telling, and impeccable character work where we literally have to delve in to the basis of a man's psyche, a director that can adequately convey that through film, a cast of actors able to deliver such a difficult performance, and a visual effects department that can deliver the perfect balance of spectacle without detracting from the story or characters.

This is such a valuable point worth making. I’m such a big fan of Memento too, but I think Inception still has more to give no matter how many times I see it. There’s always something I didn’t catch in the previous viewings that I discover waiting for me. It’s a technically perfect film and also an example of why Tenet was so disappointing, as it ENTIRELY lacked that emotional core to the film that Ben from Canada describes at the heart of Inception.
@MrJagermeister
@MrJagermeister 3 года назад
@Brian Cairns I saw Tenet three times in the theater. But there’s no way it compares to the emotional core of Cobb and Mal in Inception (or to the point of the video, the emotional journey of Fischer coming to terms with his Father’s death and the kind of person he’ll become in his wake). I mean, Nolan *specifically* held us at arm’s length by naming the protagonist of Tenet... the Protagonist. I have to really reach for a connection that could very easily just be speculation on my part (the Neil/Max theory). As a fan of Memento, I adore Nolan’s clockwork-like mechanics of his films that operate on multiple levels, and while the Pincer maneuver of Tenet is full of bombast and spectacle, it doesn’t compare to the emotional core of Memento either (which has it’s own gimmick, but that also defines it’s protagonist entirely and the story wouldn’t exist without the ways that character is manipulated, and self-manipulates). Tenet was interesting to watch, but probably at the bottom of my list of Nolan films, right above Insomnia. It just needed better characterization. Especially if they were going to risk the fate of the world on the actions of a man whose name we don’t even know and his emotional feelings towards a person that very nearly dooms the world for revenge, lol.

This reminds me of one supposed critique of Inception I’ve seen some people say, that in the end the job wouldn’t matter because all Fischer had was a dream and questioned how that would effect him. But it wasn’t just a normal dream, it was using a dream-like landscape to delve into the subconscious of Fischer in order to dramatically change his way of thinking. I explain it like this, I see it as similar to when you have a really vivid and memorable dream yourself, could be about someone you know in your life. The way you saw that person in the dream will effect how you think about that person in the real world, it could be a good or bad view. It doesn’t have to last long, but for a time the experience you had in the dream will effect your thinking. That’s what they did with Fischer, just on an industrial scale.

Sorry for posting a comment no one will read on a 6th month old video but kudos to this read on a film that has been pulled to bits over a decade. A few days ago I made another comment on a video about Interstellar regarding the regular criticism about Nolan's thin characterisation outside of TDK trilogy which was of course raised this time last year upon Tenet's release. As a fanboy who genuinely thinks that Nolan has never made a bad film (Insomnia is IMO his least excellent, but excellent never the less) I have always loved his characters as although Dunkirk is arguably even thinner than Tenet in this regard, the lack of background does not mean a lack of depth and in every case I reach the end of the film genuinely caring about the characters ('Its not who you are underneath, its what you do that defines you'). As amazing as everyone is in Inception Murphy's portrayal of Robert, helped by the late and legendary Pete Postlethwaite is among the most moving aspects of the directors work. Taking a member of the 'top 1%', someone who should be unsympathetic at the best of times, never mind back in 2010 during the financial crash and showing through the heartbreak of his fathers loss how human he is still gives me the feels to this day, especially as the hospital vault scene begins what IMO is the best section of the film, as with Eames monitoring the moment of the inception, his satisfaction of their success leads of course to him detonating the demolition charges starting the chain reaction of kicks.

I got the chance to see Inception twice recently when it came back for it’s 10 year anniversary in IMAX and it really, truly holds up. A film that I get more out of every time I see it. I know you’re a busy guy, Ben from Canada, but sign me up if you ever create a channel of your own where I can get more stuff like this. (Sidenote - I also appreciated how you had Tom Hardy playing all the various roles *other* than Eames throughout the video, and Yusuf being the guy that sells actors sedatives is probably the most accurate part of that film theory).

This was excellent, and it was a nice change of pace to have a video on the channel that didn't feature a RLM clip thrown in at some point :P Great work!

Ben. You are great I love seeing your videos and how in depth you go on the feelings the movie tries to get across, it's easy getting caught up in the visuals of movies but you really get at the heart of them and the deeper meaning.

I really love inception, and knew that Murphy's performance and the chatcter were the lynch pins of the movie, but never saw it as the Muse to inspiration kind of relationship before, and its really made me love the movie on another level.

But we never find out if Peter really is stabbing him in the back. It's a conceit created by the team, and Robert has a hunch, but it could just be paranoia. They might have ruined his good relationship with his Godfather, the closest thing to family in his grieving, and someone who knows the company better than him. And all that was done so they could get THEIR rewards. They're horrible people.
