@@campkira Because the mathematical system only works over a larger number of contests. Playoffs/World Series are a minute fraction (best 3/5 or 4/7 games) of a full baseball season (162 games) and thus far more subject to variables and randomness. It's like flipping a coin - flip it 162 times, and you're guaranteed to come up with a number close to 81 heads and 81 tails, but flip it 3 to 7 times, and it could come up heads or tails every time. In general, playoff and WS winners are dictated as much by chance as mathematical consistency.

I never watched a full baseball game in my life and I loved the movie when I saw it he describes why perfectly it's an underdog story that's real and shows how change is necessary and just sticking to the old ways can just lead to the rich getting richer.

One of my favorite parts about this movie is that you see Brad Pitt's character change the way he does things. In the beginning he talks about not getting too close with the players so that they're easier to cut, but as the movie goes on he realizes he needs to change the way he does things too and he gets closer with his players. You can really see it in the scene where he has to cut somebody and you can tell it hurts him to do it.

@@DCVM93 I think non-baseball fans can understand the concept of runs pretty easily. And I know plenty about how sabermetrics are used, but he specifically said that they use them to determine which players score the most points (in reference to runs) and nothing else in sabermetrics is referred to as "points". I wasn't correcting him or anything, it just amused me as a baseball fan.

As a life long Bay Area baseball fan, let me tell you this movie fails at showing us who Billy Beane actually is. This movie makes him out to be a crusader for the little guy, when in reality he's a hard nosed businessman who puts money before winning every time. There's a reason why the poorer teams keep their payrolls low, so they can collect the checks from the collective bargaining agreement. If they spent more, they would get less subsidies and that would effect revenue stream. It's no secret, the poor teams choose to stay poor teams, all so they can play the poor old me card. Shit, the Giants spend tons of money and haven't had a good team in years.

As a baseball and european football fan, and a fan of a big market baseball team and a smaller European team, I think baseball is much worse. At least with european football teams that can't win the championship still have something to compete for by trying not to get relegated. Small market baseball teams, like some european football teams, will wander in the proverbial desert for years, with no true direction. The one good thing about baseball though is that small market franchises can sometimes win it all, like the Kansas City Royals in 2015, and it's more likely than a team like Leicester winning the prem.

I love this movie for many of the same reasons, and it's really cool that someone who doesnt like baseball likes this movie too. HOWEVER....the fact that the movie painted Art Howe as a villain and completely left out that the A's had the AL MVP and three dominant starters on the team is a crime that cannot be ignored

It's drama. There had to be some conflict. If everyone was portrayed as going along with it, the movie wouldn't be as good. I have to think Art was involved with the process of moving towards a more stat-based team and having to play the players even though it might not have made sense. But who knows. Art was not a great manager, overall.

“sports movie” is a very specific type of movie. While moneyball has the underdog trope going for it in that category and of course baseball being the crux of the story it’s not the same feel good story that most sport movies go for that is derived from the demographics existing love of sports.

Paused the video halfway through to watch the movie, my eyes are now wet and i'm thinking about my own future and how much i should love the work i'm putting into my own dream, even if it feels extremely shitty now and i'm an endless ocean away from it. This is one of the finer movies i've seen that most certainly deserves the prestigeous 10/10 score. If a movie about baseball can make you appreciate the mundane then it's not really a movie about baseball at all, it's a movie about accepting life and the struggles in it.. by playing baseball! I'm just a loser that didn't enjoy the ride!

I stopped this video around halfway and watched the movie too. For me, I have never enjoyed the mundane challenges to reach a goal and have often looked for a shortcut or even an out. My life has dramatically changed lately and so will my attitude.

That’s why I and many Americans love baseball (obviously it’s fine if you don’t). It’s because it’s sort of a symbol of our childhoods- not because it’s always fun to watch (I’ve seen some boring games). I learned a lot of the lessons that made me who I am on the field, and met my friends there too. Money Ball is just a good allegory for the sort of lessons you could learn on the field or in any struggle.

I am more watching the acting, scene placement and score. This movie still made me feel emotional even though it was a known outcome for the movie, now that for me is a masterpiece of movie making.

Same. Even today's teams are constructed the same way and it gets us a first round playoff exit every time. It's starting to grow really stale, but when they first found this formula it was amazing and its amazing they still have as good of teams as they do even today

I'm from New Hampshire and therefore when this was going on I was a huge Red Sox fan waiting for us to break the curse. I didn't know anything about Billy Beane or what he was up to with the Oakland A's I just remember when we got Theo Epstein and made some big changes and it was revolutionary and ended the curse. So Moneyball has a special place in my heart too because it explains how the Red Sox finally did it. That ending is so prophetic. Of all the Baseball Professionals that thought Billy Beane was a joke, the Red Sox ownership understood exactly what he had done. He changed baseball forever.

This movie is so much more enjoyable when you do know baseball. It’s just so awesome to see because the likelihood of a team winning 20 games in a row no matter how good they are is astronomical. That’s just because baseball is such an unfair sport where you get rewarded for doing bad sometimes and putting it all together for 20 games is amazing

I'm a Mariners fan, and I sat back in amazement, with my hear in my hands. I love this movie, but it doesn't mention that the team was built mostly from scouting and their system. They never or barely mention Zito, Hudson, Mulder, Chavez, or Tejada. The part of the movie where the scout says, "we will teach them to play Oakland A's baseball" makes a lot of sense.

God i love this movie's use of music from post-rock band 'This Will Destroy You'. I listened to their music before seeing this film and fell inlove with the sound and how it builds. I was so happy see it in this film and it fits so perfectly.

Well it made over $100 million in theaters. And it's frequently in the "most popular right now" section on Netflix so you're luckily very wrong here. A lot of people watched this movie and a lot of people love it.

For years I've been watching this movie, probably 5 or 6 times all of the way through. Most movies I've seen before I'll just watch a few scenes to get the highlights when I'm in the mood for something I know I liked. This is not my regular movie full of action and yet I've always been enthralled by it and don't even own a copy. Thank you for this video as it helps me to understand what it is about this movie that resonates so much.

I love this film. What I find interesting is that all of my favourite sports films are focused on baseball. I’m an Englishman living in Australia and have never watched a full Baseball game in my life, yet from Field of Dreams to A League of Their Own to Moneyball, I have by far and away watched these films more than any other sports film multiple times.

So as Moneyball is one of my Top 5 movies -- Ben is the Number ONE in commentary. Such grace, such style, such wonderful editing skills. (Now I have a hankering to watch the damn movie again. The movie never mentions that the A's had a talented trio of young starters in Tim Hudson, Mark Mulder, and Barry Zito who combined to go 57-21 that year. The movie makes a big deal out of Chad Bradford who gave the A's 75 decent innings out of the bullpen that season but Billy Koch was the closer with 44 saves, Bradford had 2. It wasn't just Moneyball that made that team win, they had some good pitching talent that had been scouted the old-fashioned way.

@@sld1776 I feel like Lewis really went overboard trying to romanticize the story. Lewis really glosses over the draft process, just vaguely mentioning that the guys Beane wanted weren't what the scouts were looking for. Considering how detailed every other part of the book was, I feel Beane's effect on the draft was exaggerated quite a bit.

Bradford outpitched Koch that year. you're valuing the stats that are related to a player's role and related to the entire team's performance.

@@bastokrepublic Per Baseball Reference stats, the most valuable pitchers (by WAR) went Zito (7.2), Hudson (6.9), Mulder (4.7), Lidle (3.5), Koch (1.8), and Bradford (1.6). Fangraphs, on the other hand, likes Bradford for than Koch that year because of better FIP stats. Bradford is clearly the more interesting character to write about in a book, but Koch was pretty solid for Oakland, until his final inning pitching for the club... I've held a theory for some time that Beane knew Koch was taking steroids, so if the drug policy that was in place for the following season had any teeth Koch was going to lose effectiveness, namely no longer hurling 100 mph like Eric Gagne or K-Rod.

Moneyball is one of my favorite movies ever, and this is now one of my favorite RU-vid videos ever. I've seen Moneyball at least 10 times, but never picked up on the zoom in shots, or the metaphor of Billy Beane working out being the same process of the team building and slowly improving. This was a beautiful of analysis of a truly beautiful movie. Thank you for doing something I didn't think was possible: Making me enjoy this movie even more than I already did.

I watched this film recently, and whilst I love sport, I have never been interested in baseball. But between the performances, the music and emotion, this movie was fucking amazing. 10/10, Pitt, Hill and Pratt are all awesome. The system also sought of works for many other sports. The use of the Might Rio Grande is fucking awesome. I love when Hill goes "I don't why I just lied there" XD

Honestly, I've never actually watched this film all the way through. I just didn't think "it was for me". I'm not a baseball fan at all. Like I genuinely don't understand anything about it. The only sport that I personally watch is Football(Soccer). But this was a very good video. Very well made. Definitely gonna give this film a chance. I honestly hope Mr Sunday let's you do more videos. Like your "Civil War appreciation" video is legit one of my favorite videos on the internet. Like, I love that film but your video just gave me a whole new appreciation for the film.

Definitely my favorite /sports/ movie. I thought the writing and directing felt very natural, especially when people speak over each other. I thought leaving takes like that in was a very interesting choice; in any other movie those would have been cut because they're not perfect, but that's how real conversations happen: you don't know everyone's line in real life.
