The book 'Putin's People' also covers this topic well. Another reason why Roman may have bought Chelsea at the time was to divert the bad press associated with Russian cash that had been flowing into London's financial markets. Buying Chelsea distracted the British public from the rest of the illicit money coming into England from Russia.

I refuse to believe that Roman bought Chelsea just because he loved football, and wanted to own a team. I mean he could have done that in Russia, and for a fraction of a cost. I also find it hard to believe that Roman wanted fame, since he is such a private person. I think Roman bought Chelsea because he understood the economics involved in football market, and saw the opportunity of owning an asset whose value was going to increase considerably over the next few decades. I think he bought Chelsea over Tottenham because 1. He saw the value of buying a club located in a more affluent part of London. 2. Chelsea were going to go bankrupt thus being a cheaper bargain. 3. Chelsea had qualified to play in the Champions League that year. Since he has purchased Chelsea, Roman is said to have invested $1bn. However if he decides to sell the Club, it is valued to be sold anywhere from 1.8 bn- 2bn. So, Roman has effectively almost doubled his investment in 14 years time. Or he will make a profit of 800m- 1bn, if he decides to sell the club. I think this is good enough reason for why he bought Chelsea. Saying all of that, buying Chelsea was a major gamble. People were talking about Chelsea as if they were going to pull a Leeds United, and end up in the 2nd division in a matter of years. Had you, in 2003, told people that Chelsea were going to be a big a global brand as they are today, people would have laughed you off. Roman understood the value of winning while establishing a new brand, and he wasn't afraid to flush down the cash to win trophies. I think Roman won't spend the way he used to, now that his brand has already been established. Although it will be interesting to see what happens if Chelsea don't win a trophy for a couple of seasons.

Whether or not it was initial business investment, he seems to love the club now and we still spent pretty well this window, if it weren't for one or two players refusing to join it would have been 50 mil more.

Biggus Dickus i think the football is a bigger aspect than you think but agree with most of it. He had that famous bet with his friend that he could win the champions league. Managers talk about him calling them after every game to check on the team. He could easily delegate a lot more and have reigned in the spending earlier. Chelsea are also based in west London and are closer to his other properties than Tottenham

But they have made changes to the youth system itself over the years, and we have had more players coming up the ranks: Chalobah, James, Mount, Abraham... There is Gallagher who is looking good, and not to mention that Chelsea's youth team has consistently done well in competitions over the past few years.

@@nworesistance9834 the more cogent motivation for the west to back Yeltsin was because his opponent was a communist. It's well documented that western nations made/kept some not-so-good "friends" because those friends happened to be anti-communist at a time when communism was seen as the free world's greatest threat.

Funny how Abramovich's backup plan to protect his wealth from Putin's rampage of the oligarchs, has actually backfired Abramovich through the means of sanctions and is now forced to sell Chelsea. Nooo he hasn't relinquished ownership, that's the trick he's trying to play, don't fall for it. He's said something about the stewardship and care, or some entirely made up phrase with no legal meaning, but as of today, he is still owns 100% of the club.
