The Real Reason Why I Am Not Racing At Hot Rod Drag Week 2023!

First off, I need to correct an error I made while filming this video. I spaced and forgot to mention that Jake Sanders and his friends were a huge part of rebuilding the Hemi during drag week 2022. I said Tony Angelo and I rebuilt the Hemi and even though there's a clip of Jake wrenching on the engine, I want to make sure he's he gets the credit for saving our bacon during DW 2022. So, if you're near Brownsburg, Indiana and need a Hemi fixed, Jake's Snake Performance is the spot!
Anyway, this is Episode 261 of Mike Finnegan's Garage and this time we venture out of the garage in Georgia and head to Race City USA aka Mooresville, North Carolina. It's the home of Harrell Engine and Dyno, the spot we've spent countless hours trying to tune more power into the 528ci Chrysler Hemi of Blasphemi. After several chassis dyno sessions we decided to take the Hemi apart to assess the condition of the rotating assembly and address two issues that we knew ahead of time that needed fixing. This video will show you exactly what's going on with our engine and why we are not racing Hot Rod Drag Week 2023.

You're going through the same thing we used to experience with the Fuel cars in the era where we were using similar parts. Different fuel, different injection system, but very similar distribution issues. In our case, #6 was always a problem cylinder because #3 and #5 would steal fuel from across the plenum. At the same time, we had the blower pushing air to the front cylinders and liquid in the plenum running to the back cylinders. This is not exact, but from memory, our port nozzle stagger looked like this: #1 .090 #2 090 #3 .080 #4 080 #5 070 #6 075 #7 062 #8 060 There was also that deal at the back of the engine with #5 stealing from #7 That's about where we would start, and after a dozen or so runs the tune up would start to become more specific. Of course, anytime one cylinder would go lame, it would throw off all the others because of load change, so the process was very frustrating at times. Good luck with it, man. Been in your shoes before, so I know the pain!

the part about the rules is kinda BS ( go reading and look at older pictures and videos and talking to elderly, i know i did/learned/apprentice from them ) as those parts were available pre-1971 but turbocharging wasn't really done as the understanding wasn't there and also controls wasn't anything nearly up to snuff entail ( EFI-electric was rarely used even by Chrysler so im not sure how i feel about it as yes 1950's 300-model did have the opportunity for analog-EFI and Chevy's had mechanical-injection systems ) about the 1990's-2010's~, yes blow-threw carb's/mechanical-injections was a 1950-70's thing but i don't consider it relevant/reliable ( carb+turbo is a bad idea! as the air isn't linked/linear ramp-rate ) and being said i can see the rule-book to limit those to serial numbers made in period/vintage-unmodified racing parts to keep modern ringer's out finnegan has had his hemi-530ci~ blown up so many times it's getting me nervous/$$/ect about my 1960's charger's new combo-swap 4.3X4.5"in stroke ( he's making me wondering about picking D8 head's vs 906 as the safer/+hp/$$/ect play ) G2 hemi tr6070 hopefully my 1st or 2d try does eat as meany parts/goes better than his 2015-now vs my slowing-building 2018~-now and not running yet/under construction mostly to my career/income/poverty nowadays

If anyone is wondering, the strobe effect we see in the camera is because the camera shutter speed and shop lights are almost nearly synchronized with their on/off cycles. LED lights blink at nearly 60Hz, and camera shutter speed is about the same.

Yup, its the same reason why wheels will speed up, slow down, stop or reverse on a chassis dyno too. My favorite are when helicopter blades appear stationary.

Yep, the lights should be 60 Hz, the GoPro is set to record at 29.97 or 59.94, and then it's adding electronic shutter, instead of the iris, to set the exposure. Amazing how his iPhone handles it just fine and looks clean.

You wanted a comment, so here it is: Your channel is at it's best when you are teaching us things, and this was a great example of what I mean. You built an engine, things went wrong, and you did a really beautiful job of explaining what happened, and why, you had explanations of the processes that caused the failure, you had two differing points of view and styles of communication, you talked about theory, practice, solutions, and you projected how much fun you were having wrestling with the puzzle. You are at your best when you share your success and your failures, and talk about why they happened. Actually watching the car roll down the track, or hyper suspenseful 'will we get this done or are we gonna lose the shop' stories are frankly not so great. You are a GREAT teacher, one of the best in CarTube if you ask me, and you pass on learning and knowledge without ever coming across as cocky or arrogant. Your enthusiasm is also infectious as hell. Every time I watch a good video from you I want to get out the door and work on my own project. I only wish my health allowed me to do so. Thanks for these videos, you do good things here.

The idea of tuning each cylinder has been around a long time. I heard it from Larry Widmer a couple of decades ago. From him i started having big block chevy camshafts ground according to if they were a long or short intake runner or how far they were from the water inlet. Made a world of difference thinking about engines that way.

I also feel like you've got a good team with Pete in your engine and tuning program. My boosted Hemi in my Newport always made most power with the biggest intake and largest headers possible. Fun fact, WW2 German DB605 aircraft engines ran different compression ratios on the right and left banks. It was an inverted V engine and the crank rotation threw more oil into the cylinders on one bank than the other. The extra oil getting past the rings reduced octane on that side, requiring a lower compression ratio!
