That's why if you are Filipino, talk to your children in Tagalog. There's a big advantage of being bi ligual.

Not only that, but being Filipino and learning to speak the language preserves Filipino culture. We already lost a good portion of it because Spanish and english is incorporated in it.

Right. It's easier for local pinoys to connect with them if they speak the language.. they will feel more accepted for sure than those who do not speak the language.

With regards to the money-sending thing. So many foreigners don't really seem to understand this. Especially the foreigners who married Filipinos. Because in western families, the gap in wealth between family members doesn't even really come close. Someone's "poorer" brother would still have a car, live in an apartment, get to eat well every day, and so on. It's the difference between having a mansion vs. having a house. That is not the case for Filipinos overseas and their families. The difference is literally between having a house vs. having a hut made from leaves and bamboo. I once explained it like this: imagine eating out at a standard restaurant in a first world country. Delicious steak, delicious side dishes, nice wine. Nice place. You're with friends and enjoying the evening. Nothing special. Just something you would do maybe a couple times a month on the weekend. Now imagine at the same time, you KNOW that your mom and dad back home are having dried fish and rice for dinner. They live in a ramshackle wooden hut where only the single tabo bathroom is cemented. They have to go to sleep early because they have to work at the farm the next morning, even if they're in their 70s and should have retired a long time ago. Some of your siblings are still in school, that your parents pay for. The ones that have finished have a job, but their salary is like 1/20th of yours. They too live in similar circumstances. Would you still enjoy eating your steak? Furthermore, the reason you're now where you are is because your parents sent you to a good college, even if they had to get themselves neck-deep in debt. Then they sold the carabao so you could get an agency and a plane ticket. This wasn't my circumstances, but it's a situation that is very familiar to OFWs or Filipinos who married foreigners or Filipinos who emigrated. Including people I know in real life. Knowing the daily struggles here and knowing how even just a fraction of your money can go a very long way is the reason why they send money. The end goal should be at least self-sufficience. Bring up your other siblings from poverty. Maybe even help them find work abroad themselves so the "burden" gets distributed. Only then will you really enjoy the luxuries that you now have. Knowing that your loved ones aren't eating dried fish while you're chowing on a steak.

This is also a great point BUT I feel there are some other factors to it such ad financial education and family planning. Which we will try to dissect and discuss more about it our other videos

As a Filipino based in Sydney, this is spot on. What’s considered very little money here when sent to the Philippines makes a big difference to their lives. Other people will say to just let them earn their own money. But I’m just grateful for all the opportunities that I have here that I want to share the blessings to them as well. Family takes care of family.

Super interesting discussion you guys! I am a Filipino living in Germany and I have a young daughter who is half-German…it’s nice to hear your own experiences on being “halfsies” in the Philippines and other countries. I’m still learning how to be able to guide my daughter on how to be balanced, culturally and in every possible way, being here in Europe and still keeping the Filipino values. Kudos to you guys! 🎉

Grabe! Much respect to your guest Peter. I'm sorry for what you went through with your dad, and I'm happy that you have found some way to balance your dual culture. I studied a little Swedish in college because it had Germanic roots and I already spoke German. Sadly, I've forgotten what Swedish I studied. LOL The only thing I can remember off hand is: Hej, Jag Heter Jay. Kan du Engelska, Tyska? I wish Peter much success with his endeavors in the Philippines. Ingat Ka Pare!

Interesting discussions but also big topics worth to mention that should be more on your channel. Like that part where he mention skin whitening still bugs me especially in a modern time like this when you get taught to love yourself and accept for who are. But in Philippines it’s still common for many to spend a lot for products to make them white. But like he said it’s a lot of because colonialism. Also this own-made system sending money to family and relatives is worth to talk about
@jojobuenaflor3568
@jojobuenaflor3568 11 месяцев назад
I disagree that colonialism is the culprit although it was probably true some generations back but i believe it is way past what is actually happening in recent years. That filipinos are spending a lot of money to achieve lighter complexion can be attributed to the sudden explosion of kpop culture

It's a question of education, IMO. Richer countries get more access to education on cultural sensitivity for discrimination issues. So the vast majority are more aware of what is considered wrong or weird or insulting when faced with a foreigner. It still exists, but the majority are aware. Contrast that with say, a tricycle driver, who is only probably a high school graduate, and whose only "window" to the world is free TV, or in more remote areas - the radio. Given that though, there's a very important difference between discrimination from ignorance,. and discrimination from actual MALICE. The latter is more common in western countries and is far more dangerous. It's discrimination that persists even with all the access to education and is more deeply-rooted. Whereas the former only really amounts to say, an inappropriate joke or the use of a slur they don't even understand, or something. And it's more easily fixed by simply explaining why it's wrong.

How would a grab driver take advantage of you (9:11) when you already have a more or less fixed rate when travelling? I think I would understand if it was a cab driver who wouldn't use a meter or something, but to mention grab drivers who are honest working people is unfair, IMHO. I hope you can clarify this statement.

Hello! Peter here. I’ve had a grab driver accept my booking, click “picked up passenger” and then complete the journey without me ever stepping in the grab. Just cause they saw my name and figured I don’t know how to dispute it. I’ve booked a grab for my foreign friend with my card and the grab driver asked my friend to pay him cash cause my friend didn’t know I already paid for the grab. I understand what you’re saying tho. I definitely could have phrased it better and the majority of grab drivers AND cab drivers are honest, hardworking people.

Could you please elaborate on the issue of PH about acceptance? I find the explanation shallow and probably the most BS I have seen here on RU-vid. In regards to the leeching thing that you're talking about, I think it's a big topic that people in the social media bubble want to blame on PH culture, another utter nonsense! Many family members indeed take advantage of this, but there are also a lot who do not. Not every family is the same and this comes from an OFW.

Hi there! One thing we would like people to understand is that every thing we share and the guests we have on the podcasts share is not a general fact but a personal OPINION. Obviously it does not apply to everyone but is just based on our individual experience. Just because we experienced it, does not mean you will as well and vice versa. The general point is everyone and country has their own pros and cons and that’s completely okay :) Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment! xx
