The REALITY of living on a BOAT :: Insider look | 88 | Beau and Brandy Sailing
Could YOU do it? Could you live fulltime on a sailboat?
When we started out thinking about getting a sailboat, we knew we needed to downsize A LOT. But what we didn’t think about was what it was going to be like to actually LIVE on the boat. How different was it going to be? What was it going to be like to eat, sleep and well poop in the boat. We have spent the last 3 years living aboard and have figured most of it all out. Living in this 35 foot boat with just the 2 of us and Oona, our salty dog.
BUT then you add 2 more people to the mix and it highlights how its different, but the same as landlife… with it being WAY smaller.
Nik, beau’s brother and his girlfriend Sam come to visit us and we get to show you what its like from their perspectives on what its like to live on a sailboat with 4 people and a dog.
#sailingsaoirse #tinyhome #liveaboardsailboat
big love,
beau, brandy, and our salty dog, oona

I was so lucky growing up , I spent every other weekend in the summer going sailing on our 32' boat with the family. Sure we had to turn on the radio when my mum went to the bathroom and I shared forepeak with my brother or sister but so what! We only had hand pump water, brushing teeth on a cup, 2 burner stove for cooking and heat! Special boat type meals. Hand washing dishes in a bowl. Always new anchorages or moorings, occasional marinas, steering for hours on end, adjusting sails , impromptu racing ,dinghy rides up marshy creeks, running aground on falling tides, or rising tides, occasional pubs, DR navigation, radio4 weather forecast once every 6 hours, one cyl diesel ,donk,donk donk....3 week trips to Belgium, Holland or France every year. No showers or even washing if you could get away with it , What's not to like? And almost nobody else at school ever did that! Cheers Warren

I could totally live on a boat! Funny thing is my family when I talk about it don't even think it is odd that I, as a solo female want to buy a sailboat for a home. I decided last year that I was going to move from Cali to the East coast having never really been on the east coast, and within 5 months my current employer decided to pay my way to move across the country. Now I have set my mind to turn my art and illustration into a living that I can do from a boat. I will be out there sooner than people think I will be! By the way, Keto is the best way to eat, although as an ex-vegan, I get very sick when I eat veggies.

Had to laugh at your brother’s reaction to a composting head. We, too, have one aboard our vessel, SV Beatitudes and the change makes us so glad we have it. I’m guessing that being a real land lubbers your brother never worked on a head, cleaned a toilet anywhere or realizes what a pain it is to drain the black water tank on a boat. With two of us living full time aboard we have to swap and flush the urinal bottles every three days but the composting poop stays dry and smell less for about a month between change (we use coconut coir). My wife was absolutely stunned the first time we changed it as there was absolutely no smell. We do run a solar vent that is directly hooked into our head’s vent and backed up by the boats battery just in case and that probably helps insure the decreased “smell factor” by keeping it dry. Just the same, we’ve both worked in the restaurant business and clean the rest rooms there IS Nasty! We also cleaned the heads and showers in both RV parks and marinas as “odd jobs” and know how nasty that can be. But, truthfully, I’d much rather clean a composter than any black tank on any boat or RV. Considering the alternatives, composers are the way to go. And your brother spoke truthfully. For him, boats are a nice place to visit but not a lifestyle choice for him. We are okay with that too as we also have many friend and family that think we’re nuts for choosing the “other way of life less pondered”. 🤔🤔🤔
@BeauAndBrandy
@BeauAndBrandy 4 года назад
YES! Agree, but like you said he doesn’t know about the ole black water tank 🙊 and all the hoses attached to it that can easily break 🤢. The moment we moved aboard out came the head and the brand new black water tank, YAY bonus more storage 🙌. And yep to change the “DIRT”y compost once a month is WAY worth it. it took MONTHS to get rid of the original head smell. Yuck.
@brucevining8543
@brucevining8543 4 года назад
Beau and Brandy Quick questions. First, what brand head do you have? Two, what do you use for compost? Three, do you have a solar vent to keep the smells vented? We’ve had our compost head in our boat for three years now and consider it one of the absolute best investment we ever made. Finally, I didn’t want to seem demeaning to your older brother as I have one too. Just pointed out that he, like most land lubbers, doesn’t grasp the boat nuances that are unique to living aboard. ✝️😀🤔

Here's another reality. Any boat anywhere can go down anytime. It goes with the territory. If you do back ups to your back ups, you will probably survive. There are, however, never any guarantees.
@DiscusRussell
@DiscusRussell 4 года назад
@@brucevining8543 Yes you are right but a very big thing here is if you trust your boat your workload is not as high that mistakes can be made A question to you how many times have you sailed solo around the world ?
@brucevining8543
@brucevining8543 4 года назад
russell, The short answer is never. That, however hides over sixty years of boating experiences. I have had numerous, not so pleasant experiences and some near sink in kings. That, when you are away from the nearest landmass far enough to make a swim to shore not an option, sinking can be a huge PITA. Actually anywhere loosing your boat/home becomes a potential, your sailing becomes less important and survival the focus. Since I’ve rebuilt numerous boat, my focus is on doing so with the care and quality required to make them safe and solid (often times beyond what the original factory build found acceptable. So my answer to you is based on more realistic cruising like Beau and Brandy are doing. They are not so interested in the round the world so it seems. A little coastal cruising with an occasional three day or so sail included seems more their orientation. Oh by the way, some of the most frightening sailing I’ve experienced was on the Great Lakes as storms there provide an entirely different perspective for “danger”.

Cool video, interesting, living 4 up on the hook on a 35' is significantly harder than passage making 4 up. Not easy at anchor, and I can guarantee you that yachtie life is not for the vast majority of people, but only yachties have had dolphins breaching and playing around your boat, (we've just had that exact scenario 3 hours ago) or seen whales breaching at sea,(3 weeks ago) or are able to go to places like Minerva reef in the south Pacific, it's a hard life of constant work and trying conditions and situations, actually for me off-shore passages are the least stressful, you get into a routine, and a groove, mostly you only have to deal with your boat, deep water with nobody in it besides me and I'm happy. Just before we went out this afternoon I was chatting to an Australian couple who had just sailed a 34' boat from Indonesia to South Africa via Madagascar, they had no problems at all and were more than happy and comfy on their 34'. I actually went aboard to check out the boat because I'm in the market for a mid to upper 30's blue water boat, and believe me I've done my due diligence. A lot of people say that boats under 38' to 40' are too small for blue water passages, yet you see so many small, light displacement boats cruising and crossing oceans, more so than bigger boats, just to clarify, I'm a South African sailor, based in Port Elizabeth, and sail between there and Cape Town, I also race, and sail on a 64' retired Cape to Rio ocean racer which we're taking up to Cape Town in 3 weeks time for maintenance, we do this trip at least once a year on that boat but I also crew on some other boats that we sail up to Cape Town for the racing season, Fast 42's, all South African designed and manufactured, very definitely racing oriented boats. Your Pearson is a good boat, I've looked at them, there are still lots of them around which is a good sign. There are lots of cruisers sailing oceans in similar boats, although in the Pearson family a better option of a similar vintage and size is the Pearson 365, normally a ketch, but an occasional masthead sloop can be found, or my choice, the 367 cutter rig, same long keel hull but a better sail plan. For the sailing that you're doing that's a good boat, it would need upgrades and a refit, but UMA as an example bought a 3K boat and have crossed the Atlantic on a bolt on fin keel (which was dodgy to start with) My plans are ultimately VC a solo or 2up circumnavigation in my time, I want a long keel Clipper bow cutter rigged, double ender like a Hans Christian Tayana, Young Sun, West Sail, etc, or a traditional heart shaped transom like Gozzards, Bayfield Creakmore, Herreshoff. Maybe our paths will cross somewhere on the big blue
@BeauAndBrandy
@BeauAndBrandy 4 года назад
Nothing else like being in the open ocean with dolphins guiding you along. We haven’t got to see whales breaching, but look forward to that memorable day. We are grateful that we get to live onboard, like you said it’s a very small group that gets to do this. Your experience and future plans so amazing! Sending you all the positive thoughts that you get your dream boat and go around the globe...hope that your path crosses ours out here! ⛵️⛵️

@@BeauAndBrandy that would be awesome, hope so, I'm selling my house and everything here to make it happen, and my budget is very modest, I'm going to end up buying a cheap, 40 year old boat myself, and doing all the work on it myself but that is even more rewarding and then you know exactly what you have got and set up for your specific requirements. As long as she's got good bones and a good heritage and the spars and sails are serviceable I'm happy. Boats find you not vice versa, I've already had 1 boat surveyed so I'm getting used to not expecting too much. 20K is my max budget, not going to get much for that, but they're out there

Do you guys have a dehydrator?
@BeauAndBrandy
@BeauAndBrandy 4 года назад
we don't but if we could get a solar powered one that would be awesome! a regular dehydrator would burn up too much electricity.

I think I'll stick to my own breakfast. By the look on Brandy's face= gave it away as (Average) experience, but not amazing.
