Spermidine is a popular longevity supplement - and with good reason, as it has antiaging properties and can suppress inflammation and oxidation. Studies have shown the interestingly-named polyamine can increase lifespan in animal models, and research indicates that its decline with aging is linked to the onset of age-related diseases.
All this background is useful if you are wondering if supplements are right for you and if so, which ones to take. However, having a professional perspective is always useful, and founder of Impact Health Dr Halland Chen MD is a Double Board-Certified doctor who is a Partnered Practitioner of spermidineLIFE. We caught up with Dr Chen to find out what it is like practising at the cutting edge of longevity medicine, and what are some of the most promising interventions he recommends to his patients.

What do you say about the ITP aborting their spermadine test as mice had not shown any increased absorption after 6 months?

Ok, I’m listening and I really like what he is saying and taking it to heart, and this is why I really appreciate functional medicine doctors, and even don’t trust many traditional doctors. (That’s not just a feeling. The number of times my Dad has been misdiagnosed is ridiculous. They were going to put him on levothyroxine for low thyroid, and then by chance, the hospital gave a magnesium infusion during a battle with sepsis - and that fixed his thyroid.) I’ll go start growing my broccoli sprouts again. But, not to get distracted, I LOVE his sweater and necklace.

Most NAD+ is a result of the NAD+ salvage pathway. Certain dietary components help preserve the salvage pathway. (e.g. apigenin, quercetin) Good gut health also helps by limiting CD38 which depletes NAD+. Adam Antebi has shown that low insulin raises NMM, a precursor of NAD+ although this has not been fleshed out in human. Low insulin has positive pleotropic effects. As for spermidine, I have yet to see a supplement provide any where close to the amount I get in my diet (mushrooms, beans, etc.) Plus, a bit of daily time restricted eating and avoiding simple carbs goes along way to improving several types of autophagy (ref. work of Ana Maria Cuervo and other researchers) as well as preserving NAD. Not a fan of supplements first and pill pushers - should be last resort for those who can't exercise and eat right

@fp1517 Год назад
I like your philosophy and align with what you say. Getting nutrients and vitamins through your diet is the ideal and cost-effective method in most cases. But we're deficient in certain things, and supplementing is well worth the cost. I'm following a meditarean diet and am feeling great, but with cheap supplements that give me an extra big dose, it's always tempting as an example, aged garlic, spermidine, and B12 hydroxocobalamin. It's obviously also a question of cost. I'll gladly spend a few dollars daily on high-quality supplements because I don't eat out, smoke, drink, or otherwise waste money. So this money is well spent, and it won't hurt if I spend a few hundred dollars per month on supplements while keeping my body and brain in ideal conditions so that I can avoid sickness, injuries, and the high chance of being unable to work for multiple months until the age of 50.
@peterz53
@peterz53 Год назад
@@fp1517 I also take a few supplements - Lithium, D3, B12, Selenium, O3, etc. Just so much hype some high priced supplements which may not be needed if one exercises and eats right. We really need reliable blood tests to assess things like NAD+ and spermidine levels, mitochondrial age, etc. in order to know if we need to intervene more or differently.
@fp1517
@fp1517 Год назад
@@peterz53 yes you're so right. A good diet and frequent exercise work wonders. Combine that with reliable blood work and we'd get to much information on how to optimize our performance. May I ask why you supplement Lithium and Selenium? Heard of it a few times but haven't yet had time to research it. You seem to be quite knowledgable in this field.

unfortunately spermidinelife supplement has some of the lowest concentrations of spermidine, with the capsules containing 1mg per two capsules.

Exactly. I think it's dishonest to push these supplements when common foods have much more and a bit of time restricted eating, exercise, an avoiding simple carbs does a lot more for autophagy.

Dr Halland, please keep your focus on medicine and leave agriculture to us We, true professionals, are really concerned about the mineral levels on our soil and check it every two years to avoid depletion due to nutrients being exported with the crops The only way of farming that has been proven to cause soil depletion is the Organic, due to their superstitious fear of "chemicals", some as simple as potassium chloride And GMOphobia makes less and less sense every year as genetic modification therapies are here to stay

Saying that a natural sourced compound is better than a synthetic one is suspicious to say the least. If it's the same molecule, it doesn't matter where it came from, the body can't tell the difference
@Gina-yy5fe
@Gina-yy5fe Год назад
You’re absolutely wrong. A lot of people cannot break down synthetic based supplements. For instance About 45% of the population can’t break down synthetic folic acid and can only take methylated folate, because of the MTHFR gene. Many people gave no idea that they have this gene until they do a test. Taking a synthetic based Folic acid (vs the natural based one ,)for years ….I started getting migraines, Exhaustion aches, inflammation and I didn’t know what it was from and it was from taking synthetic based Folic acid. And you need folic acid to break down other B vitamins for energy and not only was I not getting that energy I was pretty much making myself sick.
@auricia201
@auricia201 Год назад
@@Gina-yy5fe you are talking about two different molecules, even if they are both considered Folates or Vitamin B9, one is folic acid, the other is methylated folate. if you Google it, they are different molecules. Your example doesn't contradict what I stated in my comment. I don't think methylated folate is used as supplementation in food, but, to make an analogy: Synthetic or natural Methylated Folate would be exactly the same thing. Of course when it comes to nutrients, consuming them with the whole food is always better. But that's not what's being discussed in this video. When it comes to supplements, where there is no food matrix for the nutrient in question, whether the molecule is natural sourced (and extracted) or synthesized, if it's the same molecule, it will do exactly the same thing !
@longevity.technology4067
@longevity.technology4067 Год назад
Great discussion!
@Always-xl9db
@Always-xl9db Год назад
So this is just the matter of terminology - when ppl say “synthetic folate” they refer to Folic acid (that is, not generally occurring naturally) form of folate that is used in supplements and in fortified foods. It is, indeed, quite bad for ppl with MTHFR polymorphism because they can not methylate this form easily. The right form for them would be methylfolate, which is active, methylated form of folic acid. Can it be synthesized too? Yes. Is it synthetic folate? No. So just common confusion with naming.
