The Rear Axle Is Totally STUCK In My Harley V-Rod *We Can't Change The Tire*

When you buy a cheap bike you expect to fix somethings and I've been knocking out the problems on my 2002 Harley-Davidson VRSC that had a very rough 34,000 mile life. Today we're going after some big issues including the broken braking system and the bald dry-rotted tires. The Harley fought back with a wheel bearing that has completely seized onto the axles and no matter what we tried we couldn't get it loose. Now it looks like I'll be replacing everything in the rear end and we still need to find a way to get it out of there. The answer at this point will probably be heat or sawzalling through the axle.

Not a Harley fan but man that bike looks great. I love the satin silver look, just with that the one big handlebar riser/instrument combo could be switched to something sleeker. Also, the new front tire makes all the difference when cornering. At least it used to make on my sports bike.

I just replaced the rear tire on my 95 FLSTC and it was a piece of cake because the Last time I grease it up when I put it back together the rear axle slides in and out like butter 🧈 😅 be sure to use a good grease or anti seize compound and the next time will be easy.

If you're going to get an air hammer, get a CP717 riveter or the Jet equivalent. They take a larger diameter bit. That'll save a lot of beating time as compared to the other air hammers. You just need to make sure the air compressor can keep up with it.
@douglasburnside
@douglasburnside 2 года назад
A few weeks ago VTuned unboxed and tried out a tool that would make short work of that dent. It worked by spot welding tiny rods that would break off flush with the metal when pulled with a slide hammer. He could pull out the smallest little dents leaving the surface only slightly marred, a bit of sanding and you couldn't tell the dent had been there.
@douglasburnside

Here is a link to VTuned using the tool. You'll see immediately how it works, and how well! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8qHMB0ax5Yw.html

I've had this happen on my Sportster before. I literally had to cut through the spacers and the axle on each side with a sawsall. Was able to get it out after that.
@WatchJRGo
@WatchJRGo 2 года назад
Honestly that's probably better than the torch, I might just cut it off 😬
@hackfabrication139
@hackfabrication139 2 года назад
@@WatchJRGo Definitely see if the sawsall will work. The Mr. Torchy plan could result in a number of consequences. Most bad. You're trashing the axle anyway, and replacing all the bearings. Cut both sides and let it all drop out. BTW, my 1993 FLHS factory service manual states to coat the axle in anti-seize before installing. Don't know about the newer bikes with the sealed bearings, mine are old school.
@kylehorn09
@kylehorn09 2 года назад
I just went out and checked my v-rod. You could definitely cut it out. However it'd be really close on the brake caliper side. But if you mess up the brake caliper bracket, there's your excuse for the brembo brakes.

Excellent videos. I built a 03 vrod up that i got for 2600 with a broken output shaft bearing. Easily the best buy i've ever made. Make sure the output pully and wheel pully are flush after you're done messing with the back wheel. Also belt tension on this bike is real temperamental. I'm ashamed to say ive snapped more than 1 belt due to over-tensioning/ what I believe was undertorquing of the rear axle but which caused the belt cam tensioners to gradually tighten up the belt over time (i could be wrong but its my best guess).

The way I do it is with a air chisel. I used the one with the pointy tip. There's a little indentation on the rear shaft. Normally a few pulls on the trigger and it pops right through. Every time I remove the axles I automatically clean off all the past junk and reapply anti-seize. Once I have an axle out I've never had to resort to anything else other than a couple taps with a regular hammer.

I just had this issue on my 2010 VRSCF. I have ceramic bearings and had to use a small sledge and a long socket extension. Bearings were good but the person who put it on last time clearly used some dollar store grease and it was more tacky than slippery. I used synthetic Amsoil racing grease and everything has been good so far.

I was wondering if using something like a gear puller to push the axle out would work. Probably irrelevant but it sounds like the bearing and axle are galvanically welded to each other. Heat would probably work but is risky. Soaking in PB Blaster may help if you can get it where its needed. Good news is that bike looks better every time I see it.

Them old Harley four piston calipers had a problem. As the pads wear down the piston will not move out. The seal pulls the piston back to the old position causing an air gap between the pad and rotor. Usually happens on dual brake bikes where the pads are half worn or more. This will give you excessive front brake lever travel or a soft feel like air is in the system. To fix it replace the pads or remove the caliper and apply the break until the pads will not go back on the rotor. Then open the pads just enough to put the caliper back on. Do both sides

Somebody here curbed a couple of bike tires last week. I almost stopped to see about picking them up. I have this trailer somebody made with a '36 Chevy axle that is like a two year only 5x4.25 pattern, so the only wheels that fit are the artillery that came on it or possibly Volvo 240. The wheels on it are like 18x4. So finding tires to fit without spending more than the trailer is worth is an issue. It's mostly used around the yard, they don't have to be great tires, but I could use one without a big hole in the side/.
