I agree with your reason 100%. Im new to photography and my Canon camera has only half hotshoe so i can only buy Canon flashes and accessories..... Limiting customers choices like this makes me disappointed in them and im looking into Sony next.

I shoot with Fujifilm GFX 100s, so I'm not into any of these. I also don't shoot sports or action, maybe I would get Canon R5c for an all around kit, there is 28-70mm f2 for example and other amazing RF lenses. The prices are quite crazy, but some of the lenses are superior to what Sony have, but I like also the options on Sony from Sigma for example. The purpose of the photography decides the gear.

Still in love with Fuji, I understand your choices, once in the Canikon system, you only have their lenses to choose from. Best of luck with the Sony, let us know how it goes. Seems like a fine contender to me.

I get it! (Canon girl here, too - although I have gotten into Fuji lately) I do agree 100% with your commentary about third-party lenses being blocked by Canon…and Canon not doing the right thing for it’s loyal photographers. I do agree that one camera system is far more practical for someone who is not stuck in a studio all of the time.

Welcome to the Sony side! 🎉😄 I also started with Canon and it was very hard to switch because of the emotional attachment like you said, but at the end of the day, if a brand isn’t providing you with the tools you need, the switch is inevitable. I switched to Lumix before Sony actually, which is also fantastic, but for me Sony is king right now!

What I really love about your video is that you say from the beginning: all camera manufacturers are great. Because I think that's 100% true. For me, the biggest difference between the manufacturers is that each one focuses on one area and is special in that. You also say yourself that you have found that what YOU need is now better as a total package with Sony. And that is exactly what everyone should be able to find for themselves. I have worked with Nikon, Canon and Sony for many years in my career and all brands have fantastic cameras. Hats off for this great video about it.

I've been in the same process, for 14 years with Canon, in love and now finding myself in this dilemma about mirrorless cameras and Canon's great limitation in addition to the abusive prices. I found your video precisely to find support on which camera to buy and mainly, due to the variety of lenses and prices that Sony offers. I'm getting closer and closer to leaving my great love because she hasn't evolved like the competition. Thank you for the incredible and enlightening video.

I loved my old 5D mark II and 85 1.2. I still feel that Canon has the best ergonomics when it comes to buttons and dials placement and their customization. However Sony made few great business choices couple years back and today they are unstoppable. To me Sony A7SIII is still the best camera for the money nowadays. However everyone has different needs, just weigh them properly and be honest to yourself :) We tend to be sentimental about gear but it's just a gear at the end of the day. If your needs evolve over time, don't hesitate to switch to let yourself grow further.

When I started in my photo/video journey i chose Sony because it was the one that fit the majority of my needs. Since I do corporate events I wanted a small lightweight mirrorless system that can switch w my run and gun style. I needed a camera w strong low light abilities, quick af with eye af and ibis. The biggest challenge most people that switch is getting used to the menu system. I just customize all my buttons and the function button so i never have to go into the menu system…i onky need to to format cards. Good luck w your journey. If you ever travel to the Philippines …please let me know….you have my full studio and support at your disposal. All i ask is you take a photo of my dog in return haha.

Today, I stumbled upon your channel. I've been shooting the a7rv for a few months now (coming from the a7iii & a7riii). Personally, I rarely need 61mp, but I shoot mostly in medium compressed (26mp) is a portrait photographer. I'm heading to Japan next month where I'll be shooting lots of landscapes/cityscapes where 61 will come in handy, but also, don't forget that you can enter APSC-Mode and gain 1.5x reach while still maintaining 26mp. Your 24-70 zoom just became 36-105 zoom. BTW, the video is pretty amazing! I shoot video portraits hand-held.

@@LauraBC Hey Laura, first time viewer. I shoot the A7R4 - primarily with the Sony 200 600 G lens. After ~60,000 photos I'm still blown away. If you're looking for a good birding lens I would definitely suggest that but if you want to cut the weight in half I would look at the Tamron 50 to 400. You'll have to be more stealthy to get closer to your subject but for hiking you have an 8x zoom lens that can do 0.5x magnification. You could probably leave that lens on all day. I don't have that lens but you can watch plenty of reviews on it. Check out Stefan Malloch's recent video on 7 telephoto lenses for Sony. Good luck on your new adventure!

Hola Laura, great video and sharing exactly my thoughts. All brands are fantastic, the buying option isto your needs, not anything else. It crossed my mind to have two systems, but so far have managed to stick with one. Being a sports photographer is not just the event it self, some teams need more than pictures and there is a part of the work, especially on social media that a hybrid camera becomes handy. Un Abrazo!

I feel this. Similar situation here, I've been a portrait photographer for a decade but around 2019 I started dabbling with RU-vid so I ditched my 5Diii for an EOS R specifically because of the flippy screen, and I spent 2019-2022 slowly building out a very expensive RF kit thinking that (by now) canon and sigma/tamron could offer a full spectrum of products to meet my needs. About six months ago I found myself with an R6, the RF 24-70, RF 70-200 2.8, and a handful of the small cheap RF primes and feeling like each piece was actually a placeholder until I could get some mid range wide and standard lenses (which didn't rely so heavily on in body corrections like the RF 16 2.8 or RF 24 1.8) and some more intriguing short telephoto lenses (like the RF 135 that just came out). One day it struck me that the R6 (and certainty the EOS R) lacked a certain charm as far as the colors and the handling that drew me into canon in the first place, so I bought a 5D classic just to have some fun with and that was the nail in the coffin for RF with me because it made me remember what I used to love about canon. I sold every RF lens and replaced them with proper placeholders (older EF, also Sigma and Tamron) that don't feel like such a weighty investment while waiting for the right lenses. I'm still using my R6 for now, and I can't bring myself to go to with Sony just yet, but Canon isn't getting a dollar from me until I can figure out how I can feel like I'm not over-invested in their system and at the same time feeling like I have toy lenses to fill the gaps between my serious lenses.

I would say that Sony/maybe Nikon if you don’t like Sony ergonomics have some of the best starting cameras on the market. @@bngr_bngr af is cool if you have lenses to choose from but right now canon just doesn’t. I would say sony apsc is the best due to af and glass available but if you don’t like the body design Nikon is the better pick then the canon because of the glass available with their kit lenses and the sigma primes. You can argue it but I’d rather have worse af but better glass to get better photos. Even if I get 50% of the shots I want with the Nikon compared to the canon which it is a lot higher then 50%. The end result of the photo will be better with the Nikon due to the better apsc glass available.

It’s great for low light and videos… and you can use the same lens on both. Then you decide if you take to the hike or not… I know!! Switched from film Nikon to digital Canon 1DS mark II, now to Sony A7R and A7R2, using Canon L lenses with Metabone adapter. For hiking taking a couple of enlarger lenses on bellow attached to A7R. Wide angle is tiny Sigma for Sony 19 mm autofocus. All are fitted in to small camera bag.

I left Canon after nearly 40 years-from a F1N film camera to a 5DSR digital camera & numerous Canon “L” lenses. Top tier Canon cameras & the top tier Canon RF lenses became cost prohibitive for me, not to mention no 3rd party lenses being availiable. I sold all of my Canon gear & invested into the Fujifilm ecosystem of cameras & lenses. I do not regret having done so.

Hi Laura, I couldn't agree more. All the manufacturers make great gear, and the more choice and competition the better. We photographers benefit from both the gear choice and the competitive market. I use both Canon and Olympus (OM Systems). They both have their place. When I'm out hiking in the wilderness, I'm almost always packing my Olympus gear. The Canon stuff is just big and heavy and I rarely see any discernable image benefit. However, there are times when I will pick up the Canon, even on long outings. Interestingly, my favourite times to use the EOS R is when I have an adapted vintage lens attached. So, I often use the Canon because the larger sensor size really brings out the character, or the "flaws" if you will, in those unique old lenses, offering up some truly unique photographs. All of that said, I am not investing in any new Canon hardware for the same reason you mentioned--their decision to block third party lens makers. I haven't failed to note that many of their native lenses are hugely expensive, and knowing that I won't be able to mount that incredible Sigma or Tamron alternative makes me feel like I can find an option that gives me, the buyer and user, more choice. Sony is the obvious contender, but I am not ruling out Nikon, or even Pentax at this point. The later's decision to remain focused on the SLR format is actually rather interesting, and there are so many old lenses that can be mounted on their cameras. I hope all of these makers survive and prosper mainly because it is good for us photographers, and I also hope that Canon changes it's policy on third-party lenses. If they did, I would probably just keep using their products and I might even buy one or two of their lenses. Choice is always a good thing!

OK, I was blown away by the heading!!! I"m a Sony shooter but I see lots of advantages in the Canon system. So I'm writing this at the start of your video, waiting to hear the answer to the question.... All right, I hear your reasons and they make perfect sense. You might find the camera a pain in the hand after a while I think - the top rear corner seemed to jab into my palm when I held it. I hope it works out for you because switching is a very expensive exercise.

These are EXACTLY the same reasons for me as well all of them, I've had the a7rv for about 6 weeks now. For vlogging I've just bought the 11mm 1.8 which is a crop sensor lens but its tiny and lightweight and can obviously do good low light. Might be worth a look for vlogging for you too.

Hi Erick! For my work, I need more mp than the Canon R6. Also, having to use an adapter it's not always ideal. New cameras have incredible autofocus features that are not compatible with lenses that are not native RF. Also, to get more stops of IBIS, you need native RF lenses. For me is a must for my videos. That is of course for my specific needs. Adapters work great for photography though.

I switched from Canon to Sony because I often need to speed up video by 10x or 20x, and while the Canons' response to lighting (even in manual mode) shifts noticeably when the video is sped up, the Sonys' (at least back to the NEX-5) stays buttery smooth.

@@LauraBC So do I! I have the MC-11 and the Metabones Mark V if using Sigma only lenses works little better on MC-11 than Metabones adapter, but Tamron and Canon lens has no issue with the Metabones. I find that Tamron when using telephoto lens don't work well with Sigma MC-11 adapter. To much hunting where the Metabones is way better. I know it cost a crazy price but I bought used for $250 so it was worth it. Also Sigma adapter does not take EF-S lenses from Canon. I would say Metabones, then Sigma in terms of functionality and compatibility. I don't have the model you have. I am shooting with A7R2 Sony and I love it. Keep up the good work ❤️

@@MK-hz2bn Maybe yours was defective, mine has 0 issues whatsoever. Yes of course full native, is always faster without an adapter. But on my A7R2 had 0 issues, no hunting for me, locks on subject right away. Sigma lens on the other hand, they work little better with the Sigma adapter. However, using Sigma adapter with Canon glasses lots of issue. With hunt, and if using Tamron lenses would not focus at all. I have both adapters Metabones V the latest version with the IBIS switch has 0 issues with all my Canon glass. Updated to the latest version on the adapter Firmware updated to V0.70. I started out with my Nikon D3600 way back when. Even to this day still one of my favourite cameras (sentimental!) and I loved the images it produced. However with wanting to get into video it didn’t serve my needs. I had craved Canon and liked the idea of dual pixel af so I then bought the 80D. Absolutely loved it. And couldn’t see myself getting another camera for a good while. However after I tried Sony there was no going back. The fact it was mirrorless, smaller form factor, hundreds of lenses (native and third party) the video and low light capabilities- it just made sense. I still prefer the colours that come out of Canon and maybe one day I’ll go back but for now I’m happy with Sony.

I started photography (as a hobby) last year with a Canon M6 MKII (M mount). Canon first dropped the M mount, so I started looking for a body with IBIS and looked at the R7/10 until it was announced that they cut 3rd party glass. Before the M6, I had a Sony A6000 with a $200 Tamron 30MM F2.8 and fell in love with Tamron. I went Canon because I heard so much about it, and was never impressed with the M6. I went back to Sony with a used A6600 until Sony hopefully releases a new APSC, or I will go with a used A7RIV and shoot in crop mode. I just love APSC glass as its not as bulky as FE and I want to keep things light. The A6600 with a Tamron 17-70 has treated me so well. Much better then the M6 ever did.

Thank you for sharing Laura. I believe you have thought a lot about it and researched really well. I think the most important factor to switch is the lenses, and I totally agree on this. Canon should have allowed Sigma and Tamron to create RF lenses. That's their loss. Also, I think that you have experienced how lightweight the Sony a7C is, providing such amazing quality! Something you should also look into, is the Sigma "I" series lenses for travel and video. They are extremely sharp from f2, amazing build quality, and very compact. I own the 35mm and I will get the 20mm, naybe the new 50mm as well. Sigma lenses are amazing, especially the new ones are very sharp with great colours and other features. You are making a good choice switching and I think you will love to use the new AF system (such a huge upgrade from a DSLR) especially in 5th generation with AI. Can't wait to see your new adventures and videos - places you go and stories to share! Thanks for all the inspiration and great work you do! Keep it up, at the end it's you who make the memories, not just the camera :)

That's not the only problem. Canon releases just compromised bodies in order to make the users to buy the next body, etc. Every release has a major flaw. I really don't like the bodies. On the other hand, in general you buy a system around the lenses, not around the bodies. The lenses will keep a life time, while the bodies may get better. However! I can't discount the fact that the RF system is probably the best right now and even the competitors have similar prices on top lenses. But not having the sigma as the Sony is a bugger. The Sigma 35mm f/1.2 is absolute madness and a must. Canon didnt even release the RF 35/1.2 yet!!! Then Sony has also the Sigma 85mm f/1.2, which is best for the buck. Personally I don't like cheap glass unless has some vintage features, but Sigma and Tamron are a very good solution for a lot of people who don't want to be necessarily pros.

I purchased an R7 because I have a lot of lens and peripheral investment into my 70D. I purchased the EFs adaptor, only to find out most of my lenses including Tamron, didn't resolve enough for the higher density sensor. Also, it appears there are very few new lenses coming out for the EF mount, further locking people into the R mount system. I tell people just getting into photography to go with Sony or any other camera that has good 3rd party lens options if they are planning on using it as more than occasional hobby.

Whatever system you choose, whether Sony or Canon, you are a great photographer, in addition, the further we get, the older we get, and we have the same back and hands and treatment more expensive than any technique, you were right to choose Sony, no matter who says what, but to shoot you, not the people on the other side of the screen, congratulations on your upgrade and wish you good mood and creative success.

I have been using Samsung NX cameras sense 2018. I love these cameras. I get great results and I recently picked up a Samsung 12mm to 24mm lens as well as a Samsung 85mm lens. The next lens I am going to buy is the Samsung 18mm to 200mm lens. It’s supposed to be a great video lens. It’s also supposed to be a great lens for when you only want to go out with one lens. I started shooting on Samsung back in 2018 and Samsung had not been in the camera business since 2015. I think I get really good results out of my Samsung cameras. I took my 16 mm prime length and my 16 to 50 zoom lens and my 45 mm lens with me this year on Thanksgiving and I got a lot of good results out of all three of those lenses. Every single lens I have is a Samsung specific lens. I like the system because the menus are easy to navigate and it’s easy to find the features that I’m looking for, and there was a custom firmware that I added to my NX500 and my NX1 the improved the video quality allows me to take videos with focus stacking. That means I can set up the camera to take 25 photos in a row and slightly adjust the focus. Every time I can put all of those photos in post processing to make a very nice clear photo. It’s actually pretty incredible. Both cameras shoot in 4K and can record up to 120 frames per second now of course that’s 720 Considering that’s very high-quality H.265 along with the fact that my custom firmware has allowed me to double the rate of all of my settings I would say that the Samsung NX500 and NX1 are the best cameras I have ever used. I also know that there are about two more lenses that I need to get one of which I’ve already mentioned, which is the 18 mm to 200 mm lens and the 60 mm lens which is also capable of doing macro photography. I even have a very nice Canon 300 mm lens. Because I’m adapting it that makes it completely 100% manual only but it has been a very usable lens in the last few years and I very much enjoy the results I get out of it. Also, I like the size of the lens becauseI’ve seen some gigantic 300 mm lenses and it’s not nearly that big and it’s not nearly that heavy. It’s barely slightly bigger than my 50 mm to 200 mm Samsung lens. I know that my camera is considered to be both outdated and a dead ecosystem might be true but I like the quality I get out of it I like the dynamic range I can specifically get out of it because I don’t know what other peoples opinion is, but I like multi metering Because it gives me the best color and lighting range. It helps my photography look very natural and yet it doesn’t look like the backgrounds are completely blown out just so I can get someone in the picture with nice lighting. I always get that nice sky blue color, it’s cloudy but I still get that cloud definition instead of just a blown out white sky when it’s cloudy. Helps with the fact that I don’t really use polarizer filters that much mostly because I just haven’t gotten around to buying them but also because I honestly think that it is possible to get those shots and make your pictures look as if they did have a polarizing lens on them if you really truly understand how to use your camera to its fullest. I also do very minimal editing to my photos. I will import my photos to my iPad or iPhone and I will use the built-in iPhone photos app to edit my photos and I get exactly the results that I want. Even better than that is the fact that sometimes With my Samsung camera collection, sometimes I don’t even edit my photos. I don’t a lot of photographers about somewhere between 30 to 60% of the time say they got at least one photo on a project that did not need any editing and that was the photo that they based all of their editing, for the rest of the pictures on. I took some winter pictures around my property one year with a Samsung NX mini. I did not edit photos whatsoever because it came out just flawlessly. Perfect. On that day, that sort of photos was perfect. The colors were right, and the sharpness and the focus of each photo was perfect to this day still one of my favorite sets that I’ve ever taken. I currently own seven Samsung cameras. I’ve got two of the android based point shoe cameras, and I’ve got an android based galaxy NX camera, as well as three regular NX cameras, and an NX mini camera. They are all amazing cameras. Some of them are better than others but I can tell you that I have taken fantastic photos with each one of my cameras. Half of them don’t even have tilting screen and yet I use them for vlogging videos. It’s because I know where the frame is for each of my lenses and therefore I know that if I have face detection turned on it always focus on my face and therefore I won’t have any problems walking around with the camera pointed at me even though I cannot see the screen. If you know your lens and you know your camera, you don’t need a flip around tilting screen to film yourself with your camera pointed at your face because you don’t need to see the screen you just need to know where the frame is for your videos. That way you can twist and turn your camera And get a good video out of it.
