I switched from the Adobe workflow to Capture One + Affinity and it has improved my photos, allowed me to discover new techniques totally on my own, and cut my editing time down dramatically.
I switched to Capture One 3 years ago when I was shooting events. So much faster than lightroom, especially when you take 50k photos in a weekend. Even better for me since I ended up switching to fujifilm, and at the time lightrooms compatibility with fuji was awful. Haven't looked back since.
Hey thinking about buying C1 as a budding sports/events shooter, do you use photomechanic? Just curious if you can set up an autoscan/upload folder like with LR to improve workflow Cheers!
After 5 years with Adobe Lightroom I switched to Capture One (December 2020) and most definitely won't be switching back. I am 100% a Nikon user and the annual subscription for the Nikon only version of C1 is less than the combined 12 month subs for the Adobe Suite. I have been impressed by the panorama stitching facility in C1-22. I have compared it against the same files in Lightroom and found the C1 version to be quicker and either given identical or better results. I also like the customisable user interface in C1 which is so much more flexible than Camera RAW or Lightroom. I do very little HDR work but I have tried a few files in both LR and C1-22. Once I had learned hoe to get the best from the C1 version I got better results than I had in LR. All round C1 is the better solution. I agree with your comments that there are many more tutorials out there on LR than for C1, however, quantity doesn't mean quality and I have found the quality of the Capture One sessions on RU-vid to be superb, particularly those by Paul Reiffer and David Grover.
I left adobe 3 years ago, switched to Davinci Resolve and C1. I dont regret it one bit. C1 was easier to learn and much smoother, also more control with color manipulation. The new magic brush is a game changer
As a fujifilm shooter I also tried out Capture One for a year. I loved the Sessions options. How neatly everything was organized. I also loved that my 'recipes' would stay linked to my photos whereas in LR it would only give the option for the film simulation. That really took away a lot for me. I also like that if you still need to use PS for any reason, you can click to edit in PS as you would LR. Currently I still use both - LR for weddings.. C1 for everything else. But I am looking forward to being able to do all in C1.
I think I was sold on Capture One the first day I used it lol. It's layers and mask tools for me make it so that I don't often feel the need to export my photos to Gimp/Photoshop afterwards. Also for anyone thinking about buying Capture One, they often have discounts. I think I bought my license at 40% off.
Thanks for this video. I've been straddling Lightroom and C1 for almost 3 years, and while I prefer C1, I've been using Lightroom since v.2 (and Photoshop much longer) and have trouble letting go, even thought I probably should. One thing that annoys me is that the Adobe CC app sits in the background on your computer, and that Lightroom is a tremendous resource hog. You mentioned that you prefer Lightroom's implementation of presets, but the fact that C1 allows you to put a style on it's own layer (with opacity control) adds a lot more flexibility, IMO. And while C1 is certainly expensive initially (too expensive), after that you can just purchase the new version every year - IF you choose - and at a discount if you buy it early. But the one thing that keeps me using C1 most of all is that I like the look of my images better - I've done a lot of comparing, and I consistently see more detail/resolution in C1 RAW development, and it's not just sharpness or contrast - I cannot duplicate that look in Lightroom by moving sliders, changing profiles, or any other way. I'm convinced that C1 extracts more information from the RAW file (or does more with it) and it shows in the image.
Got out of the Adobe ecosystem a couple weeks ago! Lightroom to Capture One, Photoshop to Gimp, and Premier to DaVinci Resolve. Haven't tried Resolve yet but Capture One has been an absolute joy.
So good 👏 Literally all the reasons why I switched to Capture One a year ago. The biggest reason for me was how FAST Capture One allowed me to "copy & paste" color corrections to other images. Lightroom lagged too much.
One thing that was not mentionned : there is a free version of C1, of course stripped down, without most of the fancy options of Capture One, but this way you can try it, no charge. And, if you're like me (shooting Fuji so jpegs mostly and having to process only a few raws a month) you may not need more than this ! To be fair, the free version of Capture One is so different of the normal one that it feels like a different software... But it has its advantages as it is very easy to understand and work with.
Capture One 21 is stripped down, but I’ve been using it for professional and personal stuff for awhile now. I usually take files into Affinity Photo to do anything outside it’s scope
had been using cp1 express for a while then there was a massive discount, without 2nd thought i grabbed the cp1 pro. Awesome software, my only complain is that they don't have exp bracketing yet (although it'll come in the next version I believe)
I made the move to C1 about a year ago and haven’t looked back. Having layers and the incredible flexibility with color editing without having to move into photoshop has been such a blessing. At first I definitely missed LR presets, but once I learned how to create and use styles, it really liberated me from the whole LR preset culture that surrounds LR and forced me to develop my own style. While I wish some plugins were/were better supported, I’ve found denoise to be the main one I used the most in workflows. I subsequently opted for DxO PureRaw as the start of my workflow so i generally cull > dxo pureraw for prime denoise + optical corrections > capture one to edit. Overall, I’m super happy with my decision, and I get the results I want which is all that really matters. Use the tool that works best in your hands.
@@bladerealm124 not that I’ve noticed. DxO PureRaw exports to DNG with the only difference being that its already done demosaic on the original raw. In terms of being able to process in C1, I’ve not observed any lost or compromised data from this workflow.
When I finally started shooting raw I tried LR/PS and was overwhelmed. It might be a great product but I didn't "get it". I tried C1 and was off & rolling quickly. Being a fairly new program I think the tutorials you find online for C1 are more useful. Look for help with LR and you are wading through a decade of cr*p before you find the video that actually helps you. C1 & their ambassadors put together some really great tutorials that are easy for newbies to follow. But then that's my .02 :-) Yes, C1 is more expensive but it works for me, they are always updating features and they listen to their user base.
Welcome on board, was editing with capture one whiles this video was recommended. Jumped ship years ago and don't miss lightroom, at least I have photoshop for a reason. 😜
For my Work Lightroom has everything I need, I may pop over to Photoshop every now and then, but the Largest part is the 1TB of storage, my edits are all in the cloud, how easy it is to share the album, no other platforms needed, and now you can create multiple portfolios ..no to mention the client can like the photos they want the most, you can edit those and be even more efficient
I own Capture One 12 and used it for quite a while. There was a lot to like about it, but the downside to me was how it managed metadata. Keywording and descriptions are crucial to me, and there are too many things about their metadata panels that I didn't like. Great video though, I'm always looking to bail on Adobe.
Good update, I’ve been using both for two months now, and parts of me want to go back to light room, mostly because lots to learn in Capture one, definitely a different way to think about your photography
I always find my way back to Photoshop and lightroom. Tried Capture one and ON plus etc but usually the features that lure you to one of those programs will get 'adopted' by photoshop a few updates later. If you don't really edit a lot in Photoshop, Capture one would probably the better option compared to Lightroom but then again it's more expensive. Personally I'll stick with Adobe.
I started with Capture One and I'm just switching to Lightroom+Photoshop. I really liked how editing goes in C1, however Lightroom already adopted some of it's features (like layers) and in Lightroom+Photoshop bundle have much, much more features. Also you can easily edit photos and RAW's on your phone without any additional price. All for half or even less the price of C1.
So I got CaptureOne on sale for $190 for a full lifetime license and upgraded the lite one that came with my Fuji camera. RAF files and Lightroom aren't a good mix for me. The results are amazing, and integration with manufacturers is so good
I got the whole Adobe Suite on the last Black Friday and I am paying very cheap for everything, but I'm still looking for other options, specially since I am seeing where Lightroom and the other programs are getting in the way of my workflow. I may switch totally at the end of my year long plan at Adobe.
I totally agree with you. Using C1 for 2 years now, very impressed with the software. Unfortunately they don't have a mobile version so I still have to use Lightroom on the mobile devices (phone, tablet).
Very good video, thanks for the discussion! I personally use Capture One Subscription for Fuji since I own an X-T4. C1 definitely works better with Fuji cameras. I use Lightroom for all my other cameras. LR's new update for masking I think makes it slightly better than C1 at this point in time. Essentially, it gives layer capability to LR and I love the new sky and subject select tools. Whether I use C1 or LR, I usually take my better images into Photoshop where I fine tune them with Tony Kuyper's TK 8 panels. The TK Panels are fantastic tools for luminosity masking and much more. I couldn't recommend that more highly.
Capture1 + Affinity Photo - best combo for an awesome price... + no subscription based. I dont photograph anymore but i used this combo many years and would prefer this anytime again over PS / LR. Never had any performancd issues, the a7III Raw import goes quick and i can directly export the finish raw edit as png file into Affinity for final retouches
If I was a professional, I'd probably go that way and I love the thought of switching but my time-lapse workflow is tied to Lightroom classic and the LR mobile apps are just to handy to give up. Being able to cull and do basic edits on my phone or tablet while on the couch is just to handy to give up.
@@Thai.H Not an apple fangirl by any means but in time I had to accept that Lightroom just runs WAY better on an iPad Pro than on any desktop (even mac)...the added portability and high end display is a big plus.
Hi Dunna, Great balanced video. What you also may not know is the colour science is better in capture One,, Colours are more accurate. I know a lot of pro photographers like my self who have switched.
I’ve heard this as well! That’s one of those things that I could kind of “feel” but hadn’t done the side by side test to know for sure haha. Good to know my “feelings” might be correct!
I left Lightroom and Ps etc for Capture One around three years ago due to the subscription only model. I won’t use anything now that don’t let me choose. There are a few things that still frustrate me with Capture One but overall I’m happy. I still miss Apples Aperture though. Come back😢.
What I like with capture one is he free express version for Sony. For me it works really well. Doesn’t have the really cool stuff featured in this video but still has the speed and great color of the paid version. For me the color of capture one is better than Lightroom and the express has all I need.
As a C1 user I am not getting tired to complain that stitching, stacking and panorama features are missing since years. Since you mentioned workflow, LR has a tablet version which works pretty well and speeds-up your work when you are shooting not at home. And not to mention the 1TB cloud space if you choose the right Adobe bundle. All this makes Capture One in its current version over LR incredible more expensive.
I've been using capture one since 2015. I haven't used lightroom once. Although I think it's better to not do any sharpening in capture one because it adds a strange darkness and unattractive contrast, which does not happen if you change the sharpening and texture in camera raw.
Main reason for me to switch from Lr to capture one is that capture one read CR3 type better than Lr. Capture 1 match the icc profile better than Lr in term of color, comtrast, detail
I'm going to have to revisit C1 once the pano and HDR tools come out. Those were big 'gotchas' for me. I loved the toolset otherwise. When I revisit C1 I will also have to get more comfortable with their catalog. That's probably the hardest thing to walk away from LR with.
This was useful, thank you. Another positive for me is Adobe CC. 1tb of cloud storage and sync across devices. I know Photoshop for iPad is not great at the moment but the power of a digital asset management tool and RAW editor to use on an iPad is great. I use LR on iPad as a more ergonomic way of culling etc. Best wishes.
Been using and enjoying Capture One going on four years now. The main reason for trying out and switching to Capture One was Lightroom "Crashing" secondly it was so slow! Capture One layers are excellent, the tools are better, the whole experience is better! I do miss Photoshop panaramas, its fantastic news Capture One 22 will have panaramas. Excellent video!
One other thing I think is worth mentioning, is that there is no mobile version of Capture One like there is for Lightroom. I personally like being able to edit across multiple devices (sitting at an airport to finish an edit etc.) so hopefully we'll see that sometime in the future too!
Great point! And great response haha this is the lightroom/C1 battle right now… they go back and forth. Apparently lightroom is adding object selection and layers soon, and C1 is adding hdr, panorama and an iPad app. It’s all back and forth lol
Being using C1 since version 7 or 8 I think, I love it and I agree on the pro's and con's for this, but if you are shooting tether LR is no option for Sony C1 outperform this on every system. Good video.
This is kind of a late comment, but here it goes. I agree with what you mentioned, I keep going back and forth between them. There is another major point you forgot about though. Adobe has an iPad version of both their softwares, but capture one does not (yet). This is a heavy weight criteria in my opinion, and once capture one releases their own, with some cloud backup, I might permanently switch.
Interesting... i personally don't like the subscription method cause in the end u pay more than just buying it out right. But I guess its a good option to have for the people who can't just flat out buy it. Also Capture one looks very interesting, will have to check it out
Yeah it’s tough because if you plan to get the new version every year, you will actually pay less if you go with the subscription. If you skip every other year, you’ll pay less with the perpetual license. I like updating all the time so subscription makes sense for me. But everyone’s needs are different.
Of course. Why do you think they went to a subscription model? They're going to make way more money off of people charging them a smaller fee for their ENTIRE LIVES than a larger one time fee. There is more profit in renting something to you in perpetuity than letting you own it. I denounced the transition from the beginning (given the obvious purpose). Frankly, everyone that uses Adobe should be livid. Their business model is abject garbage. I purchased a license for Lightroom years ago. Back before it was subscription based. I can no longer download it. As in, they no longer provide it on their website. So basically they sold me something and just took it back. I was content to just keep using the version I bought. There's nothing in the new versions I need. And that's precisely why they do what they do. To extort you. And more and more companies are transitioning to this business model. Apple, for example, is trying to basically ban third party repairs of their products. They don't want you to own, not only the software, but the hardware. And it's amazing how few seem to even notice much less care. Adobe desperately needs competition.
okay RU-vid, ill bite. this video popped up on my feed and I use Lightroom for years. This is a good video, well put together. Good enough for me to download the 30-day trail for CO. Let's hope for the best folks!
I made the switch 4 years ago. As well as the reasons you mentioned the fact that the UI is fully customisable is a huge advantage. The tools and where they are located determined by me rather than Adobe 😀 Unfortunately, we have to spend a long time in our photo editors UI. Styles are pretty flexible, they can be added, applied to layers etc, I don't see a big downside compared to LR. Style brushes give convenient quick access to eg dodging, burning etc or whatever you want if you create your own. Whilst the Magic Brush makes selections really easy and fast. Using the Magic Brush to select the colours in the original image makes working on a B&W really intuitive. So C1 for me, the increase in cost is worth it.
You got me thinking about this switch! ever since I made the change to over Davinci I've been thinking about just leaving adobe altogether. I'll have to do some comparisons. thanks Dunna!
Thank you for doing the video. Looked at migrating last year but found the learning curve to steep. Didn't find Cap1's tutorials very usury-friendly. Spent nearly a week trying to get sessions, and what you could do with that work flow not doable with catalogues/projects. Cheers!
The biggest problem I have with switching between different editing tools is that none is able to read the edits from the other one. So if you have a big catalog and want to switch to a different tool then you cannot take over or convert your edits (only very few) to the new tools. So if you are going back to pictures you edited some time ago and want to modify some of your edits then it is not possible with a different tool. So if you used LR in 2020 and C1 in 2021 then you cannot re-edit your photos from 2020 because you are not having the subscription any longer. Instead you need to start from scratch in your new tool.
I have actually been using Luminar AI and I just purchased Luminar Neo. I can quickly get great looking edits that way and can tweak them more when needed. Luminar Neo is supposed to add layers amongst other things so I am very excited to try that out. Plus I have the full adobe creative cloud through work for free.....so if need something in lightroom or photoshop I can do that, but I have mostly been sticking with Luminar. I do really like the Advanced color and skin tone features you have been showing in Capture One......Man I have been digging your edits lately with all these mountains and punchy colors.
On pricing, I tried out C1 on a 30 day demo and at the end of that got a discount code for 30% off. Made it about £210 for a perpetual C1 Pro v23. I assume the same holds true for US and Canadian pricing, it makes the perpetual license about the same as a 1 year subscription.
I switched to C1 a year ago, after 5 years with Lightroom. I never thought I would use C1 other than tether shooting, the interface and clipboard always seem too complicated to use, however, everything changed after I purchased the M1 Macbookpro, the 8GB RAM in my MBP can not handle Lightroom, at all. The SWAP memory usage went CEAZY!!! Applying any adjustment became laggy, export right after editing takes forever and I had to relaunch the program every time to clear SWAP when I need to export multiple images. Finally, I had enough and went full C1 workflow, struggling at the beginning cause I'm so used to lightroom interface but after a few weeks, I never went back, my workflow needs to shoot and process hundreds of images every day, C1 is so much faster than lightroom, yes sometimes it takes few more clicks to do some same thing but it can do SOOOOOO much more. I don't have many complaints about C1, they removed the output panel once, that period of time is really painful to me, but thank god they brought it back, and perhaps batch converts RAW to DNG in the catalog? will be fantastic.
Switches 2 years ago to C1, because LR messed up my raw files from my Olympus camera. I work faster in C1 as well, plus I use the Sessions workflow and it makes a ton of difference to me.
Good video Dude. I have never tried Capture one but heard it was good. I never really had an issues with lag with LR and also they have layers too now. Which is nice and I think it makes it easier to edit and know what is what. But great video Dunna
lol lightroom just got like a major update just a month after this. but now we have layers which is freaking cool, and the selection works flawlessly with selecting hair and stuff
When you switch to C1 you never go back. The speed, the basic adjustments, the fact that you can decide where you store your files, the interface, the extra tools such as layers and skin tone... it's superior in every single form and way.
I don’t get the pricing of C1. In Germany the subscription is almost 3x the price of the Adobe Photo Suite. No issue for pro use but it’s a lot for amateur users.
Lr and Ps are for different purposes. more complicated adj goes to Ps. some of the functions in ps are indeed a bit obsolete and need overhaul. for instance the h&s adj. adobe should add sat selection to it. select&adjust on a color wheel would be great
A major thing I miss is from LR is the copy and paste. Just a simple Option C/V whereas I. CP1 it’s a huge ordeal. Also you cannot click and drag to highlight images. Instead you need to click on Every. Single. Image. That you want. Sure I could assign ratings in colour or stars. But this is a big one. Also it would be nice to not have the catalog only work from an internal drive. I had to get an M1 Mac Mini and I got it with everything juiced up. But the catalog must stay on that drive while the reference files are on externals. Until I can afford a Mac Pro like I had before with 6 internal HD this Mac Mini has a lot of drives hooked up to it and it’s a PITA.
I think you might be missing some things. Copy and paste are just shift+cmmd+c and shift+cmmd+v And you can click one photo and shift click the last photo you want selected I believe. It’s still not dragging a box around the ones you want selected but it’s pretty quick still. Also, I work with my catalogue on an external hard drive as well. Sooo… either I’m misunderstanding what you’re saying or all the issues you have in C1 aren’t actually issues haha. Let me know if I’ve got it mixed up!
This was very interesting to watch. I've been a Capture One user for years now, but Capture One 21 absolutely cratered me from a performance perspective (at least with my FujiFilm RAW files). At this point I forced to consider going to Lightroom for performance reasons, which is super frustrating.
Captrure One is missing a history tool, which is a bummer - I love how in Lightroom you can see every single edit you've made, and at exactly which point you exported. I suspect lacking that is why Capture One runs quicker. Also the AI tools released recently for Lightroom are amazing.
I'm watching this 2 years after you made this video (which by the way seems to be the most popular "Why you should switch to capture one" video on YT) and it seems like Adobe used this exact video to make changes to Lightroom. Like every shortcoming you mentioned is a feature that was added or improved in Lightroom in the past 2 years. Kinda funny
Right? I've actually been contemplating a move back to LR since they've kind of given me what I was looking for but there are still a couple things that Capture One does better.
I 100% prefer capture one, but my friend uses lr and ps and he says they have layers in lr now. Masking layers. Idk if that's new or not. But they do have them. But I played with his lr. I still prefer capture one.
I really want to make the switch over to Capture One but I am not ready to take that leap since they do not have iPad and android support which is where I do a lot of my culling and editing on the go.
