wow this takes me back to being in elementary school.. around 2001-2004 were my favourite team obviously being from vancouver.. but now i dont keep up with canucks or nothing.. this was a special time in our city!! time flies
Man, I don’t know how many people understand how Bertuzzi was beloved in Vancouver. Everyone stuck by him like how a mother stands by there kid no matter what. Respect to Canuck fans.
He fucked up. He got a second chance and proved himself not only as a good hockey player, but as the respectful person he used to be on and off the ice before the incident. He knew he fucked up immediately. Like literally 10 seconds after the incident. His actions over-powered his intentions. Obviously it was a cheap shot, but he did not wish to injure Moore. Sure he knew what he was doing, all he wanted to do was follow the unwritten code, stick up for his linemate, and shake the guy up a bit.
honestly.... bertuzzi was my favourite player growing up alongside nazzy. but there was something about bert that made me admire him, he played so well. obviously the hit wasn't his greatest moment, but we all saw what moore did to nazzy. i do believe bert when he said he didnt want to hurt moore in that way. but he needed to be put in his place, its just sucks that it turned out so terribly. but i will always be a bert fan, and i'm so jealous of that old lady! i want his jersey!
Moore's hit on Naslund = Unsportsmanlike Bertuzzi's on Moore=Unsportsmanlike Burt made a mistake and showed true regret for it the fans saw it and the fans cheered when he came back he deserved it
I do not blame Todd as much as I blame the league for continuing to have allowed the magnitude of aggression up until that point. Look at all the hits from behind that occur since then - players should be out for the season for a ruled hit from behind. That would have stopped it there...
Steve more has issues to this date, read about it. Not sure anyone who injure someone in purpose i might add with a sucker punch should get anything, anything.
@GrassValleyGreg Btw I added in my previous post, for your education, some othere incidents where there were only fines or very short suspensions "2,3,4 games" not years!!! Goes to show you how Bertuzzi was railroaded.
@AriSparkfist bertuzzi was suspended for the remainder of the season as well as the playoffs for his sucker punch he gave steve moore as revenge of a steve moore elbow to naslunds head a week prior. at the end of every season, the canuck players give their jerseys to fans and sign them. this was the crowds reaction after seeing bertuzzi for the first time since the incident.
canuckle head This made me emotional too. I remember watching it when it happened. I wonder if it was planned to give it to the old lady, with the hug and everything. It definitely gave it that little extra kick to the heart.
Moore's hit on Naslund wasn't even that bad. Naslund was outstretched, in a vulnerable position and Moore went for the hit. It may not have been the best hit, sure, but the way Bertuzzi responded was down-right barbaric.
Bertuzzi could've EASILY clobbered Moore to within an inch of his life. Legally. Instead, almost a decade later, he is headed for court- and regardless of the decision, he will be forever remembered for that night in Vancouver first and foremost in what was an otherwise good career. Nuff said.
This isn't hitting your little brother, this is a career ending injury, the man broke three vertebrates and still has sever head trauma. Todd ruined this dudes life, and for you to compare it to hitting your little brother is insulting, they're not children, they're adults! Moore is still in court after 8 years still trying to get compensation for all the damage he suffered.
Marcus Hicks Todd shamed hockey around the globe, you may have gotten your Petty "revenge" for your overrated player being out for 3 games, but in Asia, and some of Europe, hockey was known for a period of time as "the devils blood sport" (I'm not exaggerating look it up)
@duffy31311 just a question...are you saying what bertuzzi did to moore isnt dirty. They were both dirty. but bertuzzi wanted to hurt him badly. he drove his head into the ice and ended his career.
@duffy31311 his neck was fractured, he provided the x-ray pictures in court along with professional medical analysis which gave a clear indication of the extent of his injuries...just because there's a picture of him laughing while in a neck brace doesn't mean he was faking anything. Bertuzzi was upset about the incident and I appreciate that, but what I don't appreciate is someone sticking up for him while he went on national tv and apologised from the bottom of his heart about what happened.
isn't he the one who used to hit other players from behind? On the blind side? The one who ended up the carreer of a talented player whose name I cant remember? Perhaps I'm mistaken; it's been a long time and this Bertuzzi may not be the one I think of....but if he is the one, in my opinion he doesnt deserve recognition of anything other than abomination.
Steve moore may not be paralyzed, but the fact that his actions could have caused this end means he crossed a line that no human being should. There is no redemption for that monster
i do agree he's a piece of shit for what he did, but steve moore was challenged many times that game but didn't drop. too bad bertuzzi had to fuck it up
What's the joke? The crowd wasn't applauding him for what he did to Moore. The crowd was cheering for everything that he has done for the team and the city for the long time that he has been there. Because a man does wrong (like we all have) then that cancels out all the good that the person has done? That doesn't make sense.
@GrassValleyGreg Typo, my bad. And added weight can put pressure on the neck and when a bone is broken, the muscle around it can get damaged. Further pressure on the neck can fuck it up. Plus, that just rattles the head more. I just did some more extensive research and apparently Burke was misinformed that Moore had made significant progress and offered him a contract. Though believing the contract was belittling was a point, he hadn't been medically cleared to play, I'll take that back.
@CaptainCrazzzy I love this "Bert caused the car crash but not the injuries sustained from it" mentality that these Bert lovers have. Just one pathetic excuse after another, none of which by the way, have been uttered (or I would imagine be terribly appreciated) by Bertuzzi himself. It was totally inexcusable and anyone with functional eyes ought to be able to figure that out lol
you realize moore turned down a contract from Anaheim because they weren't going to pay him what he wanted right? He also turned down 3 AHL contracts. Dude killed his own career
When a player makes a mistake, they should be given an opportunity to make up for it. It's when they do those horrible things over and over that they don't deserve moments like this. Burt deserved this in my opinion.
So doesn't that make it worse that you have to sucker punch a garbage minute eating bench player? You just made Bertuzzi look worse. If you can do that.
The fact is, there wouldn't have been a dogpile if Bertuzzi hadn't punched him in the head and then driven him into the ice. You call Moore a pussy but what Bertuzzi did wasn't ANY better. He could have fought the guy at some other time or slammed him into the boards at some point but no, he just HAD to hit him from behind because the guy didn't want to fight. It's like let it go, geez. Just because Moore hurt Naslund doesn't mean he was headhunting. Looked clean to me.
THE SUCKER PUNCH WASNT WHAT HURT MOORE, IT WAS THE FALL TO THE ICE + THE FOUR 200 POUND MEN THAT FELL ON TOP OF HIS NECK. IM SURE MOORE WAS JUST DAZZED AFTER THE PUNCH. IF THEY DIDNT FALL ON HIM THINGS MIGHT HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT
Was Todd Bertuzzi suspended or was he retiring? sorry i follow east conference i dont know much about the west, someone tell me why he wasnt dressed in his uniform
@MrReesiesPieces he was suspended for the rest of the season and the playoffs and was technically suspended through the lockout year too following the incident.
It was 7 years ago. Try thinking for a minute about how much YOU have changed as a person over the last 7 years of YOUR life. If you are progressing like a normal human being, it is likely a lot. He served his suspension, paid his due. If Steve Moore isnt still mad at him, why should anyone else be? Its over. Done. History! Move on folks. Its ok to appreciate what kind of player he has become and continues to be in Detroit. The man has really become a true redemption story. Good for you Todd!
@duffy31311 Moore was only hurt because he was soft?? He had a broken neck and a grade 3 concussion. What would constitute a real injury to you? Losing a limb?
It was a bad move on both Moore and Bertuzzi. Each did a dirty thing that changed both their lives forever. I'm sure if they could take it back they would. In my opinion I don't believe Bertuzzi wanted to permanently injure Moore but rather to give a stern payback for the dirty Naslund hit. It was hard on Bertuzzi's conscience as you can see from this video. He was almost in tears over the guilt. Even visited Moore in the hospital at his bedside. People do make mistakes.
@TheEnchantedTikiRoom I gotta agree with you even though I'm a big Canucks fan, Bertuzzi came from behind the guy how the hell was he suppose to see that?
@TheSkookumchuk 1- One Av player and 3 Canucks in the pile on Moore's back and legs 2- A pile on anyone's back and/or legs will not injure their neck 3- Moore has never been cleared to play 4- Moore has not been cleared to play due to post-concussive, not the neck, his neck has recovered. 5- None of it- NONE, happens unless Bertuzzi hits Moore from behind. Taking revenge is one thing, and Moore deserved an ass kicking, but this is completely indefensible on Bert's part
Naslund still played after that hit, Moore still suffers everyday and drinks thru a straw. If bertuzzi and Cooke jumped off a bridge it would be an improvement for NHL
I used to play hockey at Jnr A level in Winnipeg, Canada, and played pro in Europe. In my opinion Moores hit on Nasland was just as bad, Nasland was the teams leading scorer in the ploffs that year and Moore was a 3-4 line player. I think he knew a little that he wanted to try and get Nas out for a game or two. As for Berts response, I think it was bad but he couldn't of possibly known that his punch would knock him out, and that falling on top of Moore would cause Moore to injure himself.
people who understand hockey code. people who understand that when you sucker hit a captain you have to man up and fight. people who enjoy having star players be safe and free from 4th liners sucker hittin em. that help?
@jamesmoyen i agree with you about the pile up and it probably has been blow out of proportion because of the injury, but he's still a prick for the punch. If he's such a big man pick a fight properly, face to face.
I thought that Bertuzzi was going to punch that old lady in the back of the head and then spike-drive her head first into the ice. I am kind of disappointed.
what i dont really understand is why avs coach tony granato couldnt have just scratched moore for that one game, like the whole entire team knew it was premeditated (said by one of them in a post game interview). if tony granato actually cared for his 4th line bench warmer thats what he shouldve done instead of pretty much hanging moore on a tree like a pinata.
@JonBiggEE But the 3 bodies were like... his teammates? Head first I could understand, but having a grade 3 concussion and a broken back from just that is quite insane, tbh.
What's ironic is that the Canucks really could've used Bert in the series. I bet the West Coast Express era team would've fared better in the final against Boston. Too bad Bert threw all of that away to take care of some rook.
What goes around comes around, if moore wasnt such a huge P.O.S. he would never have garnered the attention that he did, and to sit there and try to ignore the fact that someone is trying to call you out and make you pay for your on-ice transgressions just goes to show what a coward moore really was. Moore wanted to dish it but never take it, he got his just desserts.
no matter if it was 10 years before this or ten years after...canuck fans will always fite for caunck players, defend canuck players, love canuck players!..no matter where your from, you WILL do the same thing if he was on your team... but in the end its all in th past, theres no point on holding on to that resenment... p.s. Vancouver, most special place to play hockey.
If the Nucks' had bert that year, they could have won the cup, Iginla dominated that 1st round series and calgary won it in 7. If we had Bert, Iginla would've been shutdown and they would have had way more scoring
I cannot believe this guy is allowed to still play Hockey and these fans cheer this criminal....this guy ruined a mans career and it makes me sick seeing him on the ice. IDC wat Moore did it was a legal hit to naslund. He didnt deserve to almost died on the ice
Yea, he deserved what he got which is he is still making Millions and Moore isnt making peanuts but then again this was Moores only chance since he was a borderline 4th liner and Bertuzzi was a superstar.
I'm just disgusted by anyone who encourages this man to continue to play pro hockey. This is the perfect example of an athlete given a second chance because he's an athlete and he's above the law. If you did this in an office, you'd be fired, arrested, and forced to serve hard time for a long time. People seem to think this is an ideal role model. Apparently Vancouver fans (judging by their reaction) love to see people put in wheel chairs.
there is no excuse for what bertuzzi did. dirty player or not, he should be held responsible for the serious consequences of his actions. whether or not his punch/driving moore head into the ice actually broke his neck (you have no way of knowing either way, so to blame the colorado players who piled on is absurd), this play is the dirtiest ive ever seen in the nhl after the brashear play. the fact that he has been able to move past this is beyond me
@duffy31311 Yes, you've been hearing that and then going out and buying replacements for them for 20 years. Man, where are all the CanuckleHeads today? Must be cleaning up the city lol.
Moore had a long time to turn and answer for his filthy hit on Naslund instead he choose to bitch out and took a shot to the side of the hide and he dropped then about 1000lbs of players piled ontop of him. Moore should have answered that bell, I guarantee he regrets it every day of his life just as much as Bert regrets how that incident ended.
