@@DanielSmith-kb5bb it was a high hit. I dont think it warranted a penalty. No elbows, feet didnt leave the ground. Head targeting, not necessarily, but a case can be made.

Yeah, you aren’t there to kill each other you are there to play a game and rough each other up a little bit. But typically the team is more mad about the penalty rather than someone getting hurt.
It’s more the fact that all the skill players have a valid target on their backs now.. like until Wilson gets fucking cleared out, it’s going to be all focused on your skill players.
@@koopspook there was one video where a hockey player got his neck sliced by accident by another player and there was blood everywhere. This was just a joke, ppl will put anything in a RU-vid title sadly

This hit in a way saved Sunnys career he was about ready to be sent down but was injured so he couldn't and once he got healthy there was another injury so he had to play and went on a run and not looked back
This was PRESEASON? Dude, Tom Wilson is an established NHL star, there's no reason for a guy not playing for a roster spot to even think about throwing a check that big in an exhibition game. Even if it was shoulder on shoulder it's unnecessary in a tune up game. That guy just doesn't have any self control.
What a disgrace of a player. That's how you turn someone into a vegetable for the rest of their life. Thank God he was okay. Wilson deserved at least 40 games, probably more.
@@SolidSonicTH that's fine. We all know hockey can be brutal. Legal hits will sometimes ruin someone's career. But there is a line, and this guy pisses all over it on a regular basis. No place for that at all.
@@randylahey8207 he did get suspended. As he should. 20 games is probably a bit light, considering history and force. It isn't a clean hit, he commits both charging, late hit and checking to the head, he has a movement upwards etc. It is not just about "keep your head up" - that only applies if your hit is strictly horizontal, but Wilson's hit isn't, he checks the head. So there is a common misunderstanding that players need to keep their head up to be aware and that isn't really what matters in cases like these. What matters here is that he checks with an upward motion; you can't defend against that regardless if you keep your head up.
My favorite part of this ghastly hit was when the announcers calmly announced that “This was not what you like to see on the last day of preseason”. Preseason? No wonder his own teammates were looking at him weird.
Essentially, Wilson was lucky that he was sent off for the rest of the game. Had he come back on the ice after that hit, he would probably have left the game on a stretcher.
@@heavycritic9554 He's not trying to rile you up, he's just stating a fact. Anyways, you seemed pretty riled up to begin with talking about that "leaving the game on the stretcher." @@iamrhockey I wouldn't say the most, but they do a fairly good job of holding Red Wings players accountable for obvious blatant dirty plays. But they're still going to every now and again act like nothing happened, but that comes with being a broadcast team for a local network.
sneeakysteve well it kinda is he’s job, he was not defending the player he was just asking for an explanation, like how big the penalty is going to be or if he’s going to get suspended.
And here we are 2 years later. Wilson getting fined, not suspended, for smashing a defenseless player's head into the ice. And then when another player tries to pull him away, Wilson smashes HIS head into the ice. What is happening? Somebody needs to sick Ryan Reaves back on this clown. He must have forgotten.
What I don’t understand is why Wilson isn’t treated as a ‘repeat offender’ look what they did with Raffi Torres when he pulled this crap time after time - why can’t they do the same with Wilson?
You do understand there is HD video of the incident you are referring to, right? None of what you said actually happened. Stop making up a false narrative, you are making yourself out to be an idiot.
Unfortunately it's his job to defend his players, even when they're psychopaths. Something tells me he wasn't so sympathetic to him behind closed doors
What the hell he was gonna shoot the puck and Wilson was trying to crush him to get him off the puck it’s not a bad play and sure it was charging but suspension worthy not even in the slightest
@@nuclearclown5374 Watch how wilson lunges directly at his head and only made contact with his head he has a whole body to aim at and only catches his head
@nuclearclown5374 it was late, it was charging, and it was to the head. Absolutely suspension worthy especially considering that lunatics track record. He is unnecessarily rough and is gonna end someones career or kill somebody someday. Give him 40 games for all i care
Defintley agree!! I'm a Penguins fan annnnd this guy targets the head like a sniper.... I mean honestly big hits are okay hut these dirty players especially Wilson need tossed... This isn't what hockey is about!!
The fact wilson can continuously do this and just get suspended. Hes gonna seriously ruin someones life with these dirty, no care given checks. We all love and respect hockey and the players, he obviously has no respect for the game or its players, get him out.
It’s more, “You hurt my guy, I’m gonna hurt you.” Its part of the game, and that’s why they leave the hurt player. Plus they want to give him space instead of crowding around him. If they do crowd around him, the trainer and medical staff have to go through people to get to the injured player. Also if there’s a crowd and somebody falls on the injured player or steps on him, there’s even more problems
Well you obviously don't play hockey because usually the reason we do that is to (defend the honor of the guy on the ground) is called retaliation they put one of ours on the ground so we do it to them
Seriously, there are two types of hits that should get you banned from hockey entirely: - Head shots of ANY type. - Blind-side shots. Wilson just did BOTH against Oskar. Dirty shit, NOT okay.
@@brycevogt9669 eh idk . Hockey is known as a violent game. I just figured hits like this were legal. Again, I've watched like a full game one time and it was semi-pro where they fought every five seconds.

I truly think a majority of people don’t grasp just how serious head injuries are and just how easy it is to cause one. To your own self, someone else, or how detrimental the consequences can be if not taken care of properly. I have actual memory issues now because I didn’t do the proper things to heal after getting a concussion. It started off as a mild concussion from a car accident, and has now turned into something that I feel like is slowly ruining my life. All because I couldn’t stay my ass in bed for two weeks.
🤔 I've had multiple concussions and went to the hospital. From sports, getting hit by a bicyclist on my skateboard, hitting the back of my head snowboarding, 1 car accident, 2 motorcycle accidents. Wow, I've had a lot! Never once was I told to stay in bed for two weeks. I'm now 40 and an engineer. Perhaps your issues are something else.
Should have been the same penalty minutes as fighting. How can anyone say this is not okay, but it's okay to throw off helmets and punch people in the face and fling them down on the ice where they could easily inflict more damage. Either more punishment for fighting or this shouldn't be much more. Nasty hit, but definitely there have been way worse in the NHL

Quag mire Can you define the difference between this hit and a legal one, though? At center ice? How would one knock someone off the puck in the mid zone legally?
Why would you title this video with the word “kills”? I get how it can be a figure of speech but sports injuries can actually kill people… especially in hockey.
Love when they watch the replay and wait a good 3-4 seconds once they realize how dirty is was and don't have a way they can actually complain about it...
As someone who doesn't watch hockey regularly or know the rules, what was illegal about this? Intentional targeting of the head? ..I've seen some pretty gnarly hits that were "clean" in highlights.
He was suspended for contact to the head. Much like the NFL the NHL is constantly reevaluating and changing the way they enforce certain rules. Also like the NFL a lot of NHL players are having a hard time adjusting to the changes.
Wasn’t intentional contact to the head, it’s pretty hard at those speeds to avoid especially when players have bad habits of putting their heads down in front of them and expecting not to get hit
It’s also funny how blues fans will act hurt and angry when it’s a player on their team getting pummeled like this, but the dozen plus elbows all the purposeful boarding and the slew foot trip that the blues committed is just hockey though right.
Yup! Don’t cut to the middle in the slots aka “trolly tracks” with your head completely down, pre season or not probably best to practice good habits lol
Here in NYC years ago, we had 3 of the most biased commentators in sports. Ed Westphal(NYI) Peter McNabb(NJD) and the worst John Davidson(NYR). Their teams players could almost kill an opponent, and they downplayed it. But sneeze in the direction of their players and they scream murder.
@@tykeboy16 This was 3 years ago... And while you are right that a blindside hit is not inherently a penalty in hockey. It is almost always a dangerous hit that ends in an injury, usually to the head. And the commentators still thought it was a fine hit, which it wasn't

Scott Steven used to do this all the time and never suspended. Gotta tell guys not to cut into the middle of the ice at full speed with the puck and their head down
@@TheYaegerjeusmc So you want players flying around with their heads down? If so, we should just ban hitting altogether in the name of safety. To some degree players have to know how to protect themselves.
@@cocklet695 The guys head is down staring at the puck. How does he hit him at all? Pretty sure day 1 of hockey school they tell you don't skate into the middle of the ice with the puck and your head down.
It wasn't a dirty hit, Wilson was just finishing his check. This is the game of hockey, always keep your head up. This is what happens when trying to buy time and space coming across the blue line. Ridiculous
Kris Cantu you cant have direct contact to the head, plus once he passed off the puck wilson showed no intent of trying to slow down or get out of the way. Basically he hit a defenceless player with contact to the head and thats an automatic suspension. Any hit thats direct head contact is a dirty hit.
(@@isaacprochnicki939 ) Played the game for a long time my friend, this was a clean hit. He didn't target his head. I know the "New NHL" frowns upon hits to the head, this clearly wasn't.
Kris Cantu idk man i feel like if the nhl reviewed it and gave him a 20 game suspension it wasnt a clean hit, it doesnt look fully intentional though as he gave the puck away and then wilson hit him milli-seconds after so it does look like hes just finishing a check. I also feel like the fact that it was preseason probably had something to do with the lengthy suspension. Dangerous play though either way. Id say a lack of judgement from both parties honestly.
(@@isaacprochnicki939 ) I hear ya bro, these were common hits in any league years ago though. Stevens, Jovananowski, Pronger, Konstantinov all made careers laying people out like this. Always keep your head up, most times its avoidable. He will think twice about coming across that blue line again with his head down
That’s just straight up head hunting. He had no intent to take the puck or play the puck. He locked in fully on his head and went for it with his elbow/shoulder, paying no mind to the puck lol. That’s one of the dirtiest hits I’ve seen.
As much as I despise Tom Wilson, I'm having a hard time seeing any "head hunting" here. It was a vicious open ice hit. You gotta keep your head up when you're on the ice. Not only that, you ESPECIALLY have to keep your head up when Wilson is on the ice....you have got to account for him every second he's out there. And there's no elbow there. Now if you want to see an elbow on a hit like that, go look at the video of Matt Cooke's hit on Marc Savard. Even as a Penguins fan, I was constantly disgusted by Cooke's play.
Tom Wilson should be gone from the nhl it’s pathetic how the nhl hasn’t kicked him out yet it’s all because he’s the golden boy alexander ovechkins linemate
As a non hockey fan I'm really confused. I thought this was like the toughest sport and this type of stuff was regular. You mean to tell me that you can literally have a fist fight and it's celebrated but checking someone going across gets you 20 game suspension........If it was against the glass it would be okay tho?
There’s a big damage difference in a fist to the head (in a mutual fistfight), and a full blindside check to the head going at high speed. It’s hits like what you just saw that can seriously injure or kill people cause he was in no way able to brace. Wilson could have hit the dude anywhere else he had all the time in the world to react. Yet he went straight for the shoulder to the head. As for if it was a glass hit, if he did what he just did against glass I’m pretty sure his suspension would have been longer cause he would have smashed the dudes head in and only the head (which is the key part since Wilson legit didn’t touch any other part of his body)
I’m in no way an expert in hockey so I couldn’t give specific rules, but yeah I’m pretty sure one of the big rules is you can’t go for peoples heads at least to the degree Wilson did. All that torque went into Sun’s neck…not good. Plus, it’s preseason, he pulled this shit in a game that literally means nothing. You can’t even give the excuse of it being some important match with high stakes.
@J Holt but their fists can make contact with the head and its ok? Thank you for the explanation, it seems like it's close to the NFL contact to head rule.
Mate, I'm irish and have no clue what the feck is going on. Why are they dribbling past the goal. Is that aloud?? Also why is yer wan trying to start a fight and not get sent off
All the ice is in play. Dribbling is just called carrying the puck or puck handling. You can go anywhere as long as you stay on side at the blue line of your offensive side. The soccer off side line moves with the defenseman, hockey is a fixed blue line on the ice. The puck must pass that line before you enter it. Choosing to fight has to be weighed against the possible penalties. You may just wait and clean a guys clock later and crush him legally on the ice. Or if you decide to send the message of what you just did will be paid back with fists and right know. The Blues were letting them all know someone was gonna pay for that shit.
I'm a Caps fan, and I want to defend this and say we are singled out etc, etc. But this was nasty and not necessary. I like Wilson but this was inexcusable.
Could someone explain why this is even a suspension to me? He didn't raise his elbow or fore-arm. It looks like he hit shoulder first and then head when he dropped it. It didn't seem like charging. And it was soon enough after the release of the puck to be legal from that respect. Sure, it's a rough hit to give in the pre-season, but seems pretty tame for getting a suspension.
That's a good point honestly. I have mixed feelings about the hit... You gotta be aware, they tell you to keep your head up or pay from about age 7 on. You gotta be aware when an opponent like Wilson is on the ice. But, is that necessary and/or avoidable? Could you line him up with your hips instead? Seems like a little much, especially with a history. Obviously I don't want anyone getting hurt, but at the same time, let's not neuter the game completely. Compromise I suppose.
@@davidthomas6949 my thoughts exactly. There is nothing dirty about this at all. He's gliding, makes contact a split second, maybe even a quarter second after the shot is taken. Elbow is down. Shoulder to the face/chest. Not his fault he's taller. Taught to play with your head up and not admire your shot. Gotta expect a hit for up to 2 seconds after getting rid of the puck. Honestly that play was beautiful.
