People almost always misunderstand what YG meant with "this time I want them to look pretty too" because it is always presented as that statement alone without the context of the statement. YG Entertainment has been known to debut artists with the TALENT first and foremost, foregoing the Korean Beauty Standards. That was why during the time prior to the debut of Blackpink, many of their artists are called "UGLY" by many netizens and media. That is were the YG statement stem from, the meaning was that with Blackpink, he will be debuting an artist WITH THE TALENT and BEAUTY that conforms with what netizens, fans and media think as beautiful. It wasn't a diss toward 2NE1.

I do like Asian Theory's guide about Blackpink because it is super informative - I just sometimes worry that it makes new blinks feel that the 4 pinks are some kind of manufactured, wannabe products (I've seen other reactors who feel that way) whose personalities are processed and their idol status only chosen for their visuals. I have been a long-time blink and one thing I want to emphasize is that they are still really genuine and humble individuals. Their training is in no detriment to their humanity. And they wouldn't have endured/went through training if they lacked talent or the determination to develop skills. The (ex) YG CEO who said that he wanted the girls to be pretty (the previous group 2ne1 did not conform to beauty standards) was definitely a bit misogynistic by saying that but having seen what YG's put out over the years, it is clear that he still valued skills and talent over everything.

Dont misunderstood, in kpop YG is famous for his unique aproach to his artist, and he also famous because in the past he never care about how his artist looks, he only care about their talent and swag, thats why YG artist are never famous to be good looking and pretty unlike other kpop group. Its not a shade throwing at 2ne1. Its just he never care about looks and this time with blackpink he does try to care.

Lisa is full Thai. And she is the first non-Korean idol of YG. There are other Thai idols in other k-pop groups. But it’s true that she is the most successful one. Koreans are not very accepting of non-Korean idols. This is also the case for Japanese and Chinese k-pop idols. Also, Pink Punk was the original group name when they were planning of having 9 members. But when it was decided that there would only be 4 members, another name was considered-Baby Monsters. They were shown in the teaser photos carrying paper bags with the name “Baby Monster” and people thought that this would be their name (they weren’t introduced as Blackpink yet). This was confirmed by Jisoo in an interview. Also, there was third name considered-Magnum. But they eventually settled for Blackpink. The statement given by Yang Hyun-suk about wanting a prettier version of 2NE1 is really shady to say the least. And this caused a friction between Blackjacks (2NE1’s fandom) and Blinks. But 2NE1 members are supportive of Blackpink members. They don’t usually have publicized interactions but 2NE1 members leave comments and compliments on Blackpink members’ IG posts. Dara of 2NE1 in particular have been very close to the girls since Dara is the only one who stayed at YG after their disbandment (though she left this year). Dara and Jisoo even did cameo roles together for a k-drama show back then. And Dara showed her love to Lisa when Lisa became the model of the Filipino clothing brand Penshoppe (Dara used to be one of their models and she lived in the Philippines before going back to Korea-she started her career there).

YG wanted BLACKPINK to be a Pretty too...That statement feels a little bad because of the translation...Actually YG Groups were always criticized by the netzines for not having the so called Korean beauty standards But YG didn't care about those they look for talent more than Beauty... But with Blackpink they just said This time they will try to be like other labels who look for the beauty standards along with the talents... That's what they meant when they say "This time they want the girls to be pretty too"

Unfortunately. BLACKPINK often not get the credits for songwriting because of YG's mismanagement. For example, Lisa wasn’t accredited for songwriting of Love To Hate Me. However, during an interview, Tushar Apte (one of the producers), reveal that Lisa wrote the rap verse for that song. But she didn't get the credits for her work. Another time is when Lisa admitted that she wrote the rap verse for As If It's Your Last during a live Korean interview even and this was all over the Korean news. However. she still wasn't accredit for writing As If It's Your Last. This happens many times. However, it seem like YG starting to learn their lesson recently. For example, each of the BLACKPINK was accredited for songwriting recently. Some examples of this is Jennie and Jisoo was accredited for writing Lovesick Girls, Rosé was accredited for writing her own solo songs, and Lisa was accredited for writing SG. YG's previous CEO Yang Hyunsuk is very frank and he would always tell 2ne1 how ugly they are. But when it was voted if 2ne1 should break up back in 2016, he's the only one who voted against the break up. And he still keeps in touch with majority of the members.

There were about 9 or so left when Teddy came into the picture(as he said in "Light Up The Sky")... And yes they were "originally" planing a larger group. The Original Gesture in DDDD was NOT shooting... The Members are the ones who changed it to Shooting.

So to explain the quote from YG about them being 2NE1 but pretty too. What he meant was 2NE1 was just straight savage and tough, they didn't have a girly "pink" side. And with Blackpink he wanted them to be both hardcore and savage but cute and pretty too which wasn't the concept with 2NE1. He didn't mean that the other girls weren't pretty, they just didn't do pretty or cute music like Blackpink does in addition to their savage stuff.
