During the Rhodesian Bush Wars, British SAS and Selous Scouts were using Chicom chest rigs that they were taking off recently deceased communist guerrilla troops and modifying them for their own needs. The classic Rhodesian Chest Rig was born out of these modifications and were made for them by two different companies, one of which was Fereday & Sons and this rig is a quality reproduction of that rig.
In the spirit of those soldiers modifying kit for their needs I made a few modifications to my rig and in the video I explain it a bit further!

I was just going to comment about what an awesome job you did putting this together and happened to notice that you gave me credit in your description and linked to one of my videos. I really appreciate that, thank you. It feels good to know that I helped inspire this beautiful creation.

Thanks brother! I've been looking at the Rhodesian Chest Rigs for a while and your videos using them sealed the deal for me! Thanks for the compliment on mine, that's really appreciated! Now for some range time with it! Keep up the good work!

That’s a solid setup! From a historical perspective, though, these rigs were only supposed to be used for mags. They were worn as an adjunct to belt kit, and that’s where all the first aid and admin gear was held.

Thanks, appreciate that! Yeah the history of the rig is pretty unique. I like that the pouches are large enough to use for other purposes like IFAK's, radios, or general purpose items. It makes the rig really versatile and able to be tailored to the users needs.

I got one of these for my FAL, Unlike this one I ordered the 6 pocket version and added a few more bits to it from a set of ALICE Y straps and now it's a very functional rig! 4 FAL mags, admin pouch, cat tourniquet/ bandage pouch, cut the loops of the bottom of an old M14 mag pouch and sewed it to the bottom left of the rig and hung and old jungle first aid kit there as my IFAK. Brushed on some OD Green paint here and there and this looks and works awesome!

Man that's awesome! I still want to add an admin pouch (or at least a map pocket) on the back side of mine.

Definitely for steel cetme mags.

G3 rifles arrived in country with about four, thin, mild steel, disposable magazines each. However, nothing imported into Rhodesia through sanctions could then be considered "disposable" and they were, of necessity, reused. However, the magazines were easily damaged and even the slightest dent could jam them, rendering them unusable. The main cause of such damage was throwing yourself to the ground while wearing chest webbing. The Rhodies manufactured their own, thicker, more solid G3 magazines but these tended to rust easily (because the country couldn't produce the necessary stainless steel?). It could be bloody painful throwing yourself down onto chest webbing. It could also be difficult getting the magazines out when face down "digging shell scrapes with your eyelashes" when under fire. It could also impede taking up a comfortable prone firing position. Chest webbing certainly became a distinctive part of the RSF "look", but I am not entirely convinced of its advantages.

@kurtphillips7038 Год назад
In order to fire effectively, one must be somewhat elevated. IE; not prostrate on the deck. A properly designed chest rig allows one to effectively “hit the deck” without the mags really contacting the ground. Ask yourself have you ever gotten prone and just Jumped straight down onto your chest??? No. You drop to a knee then use the rifle stock as a lever to lower yourself the rest of the way down to your elbows and or hands. Then you return fire from a normal prone position. You either have never done it or done it in a rather unnatural way.
@markaxworthy2508
@markaxworthy2508 Год назад
@@kurtphillips7038 That sounds great in theory, but the practice proved somewhat different. Under fire the first reaction is to get as low as possible in cover as soon as possible. This is particularly true of less than elite troops, which most Rhodesian forces were. You can do all that fire and manoeuvre stuff after you have identified where the fire is coming from. You want to try throwing yourself to the ground in Rhodie chest webbing, which clearly wasn't ergonomically designed. It didn't much help when firing from a prone position, or skirmishing forward, either. On top of this was the vulnerability to denting of imported disposable G3 magazines.

Good video. I have liked this since seeing them as a kid in the early 80s. Now that I see how well you molded it for our rifles, I'll probably get one. 2 things, where's the baby poop yellow paint for it? 😉 The pics of the guy @1:26 he's an airsofter and not a Rhodie vet. He's got great gear though. 👍

Thanks! Lol no "baby poop" yellow for me, I fought that war (the baby poop) and wouldn't want to do it again. The guy you mention had me fooled. Looked like a legit photo from that time period. He definitely put together a period correct kit though!

@@themodernminuteman2557 I prefer the ar platform more than the ak, don’t a really know why though. I’ve been putting together a molle II rig, half the molle attachments are more expensive than the vests itself, and I got three of em for $15! So it’s covered in equipment from vietnam to not even military, a carabiner is a good way to get a belt loop to work with molle attachments from what I’ve found.
@themodernminuteman2557
@themodernminuteman2557 2 года назад
I'm set up with both platforms! I kept it old school and traditional for my gear for the AK and went with modern gear (PC, chest rig, battle belt) for the AR. I prefer the AR as well. Yeh, alot of the Molle pouches can get expensive, even surplus stuff has been going up in price. But, like I tell others, you'll end up running what ya brung. Base kit can be an AR with half a dozen mags in a ChiCom chest rig and a daypack with snivel gear, food/water, comms and first aid. Sounds like you're squared away! Good stuff!
@Sgt-lott10
@Sgt-lott10 2 года назад
@@themodernminuteman2557 might need to buy more first aid stuff, falling down the stairs and a bunch of it going out of date has limited the amount of stuff I have, even less can fit in the 1960’s marine ifak. I have been eyeing some fully complete molle Ifaks, cheap too. I only have one magazine pouch, old 60’s army one so I’m not sure what to do with the smaller side pouches meant for hand grenades, but yeah I do believe it’ll come in handy. Especially the Swiss Army knife which I keep in one of my few actual molle attachments, some sort of bag. For communication all I have are two 2way radios and for food I’ve got a canteen from 2002 that leaks if Held upside down. Been trying to get a mess kit saw at an antique store, 1945 style but it’s complete are theres two of em

Great stuff, I can ask how you added the buckles to the back strap? Did you cut the loop to get the buckles in?
@themodernminuteman2557
@themodernminuteman2557 2 года назад
I did not have to cut the loop. On the bottom left (when looking at the back of the rig) there was the D ring closure that I twisted off and put a 1 inch fastex buckle on by making a small notch cut on the end of (similar to how a gear repair kit buckle is set up) and it allowed me to slide it on the now bare fabric loop. Hope that helps, its a little hard to explain.

I like the fit. Solid with good weight transfer. I'm a normal sized guy, 5"11" and 215 lbs with a 45" chest and 36" waist. There is plenty of adjustment in the waist but not so much so in the chest/shoulder straps.
