Just a theory, I suspect they went for inexperienced directors/other roles because they’re much more likely to do exactly what they’re told and not put up much resistance. A suitable candidate would’ve probably wanted too much license and freedom for Amazon's liking. I wonder how many higher-profile directors actually showed interest in or applied for the role and were disregarded.

I think that the orcs are the most relatable characters in all the show. They just want their own place to live.

Alex is like Gandalf surrounded by Merry and Pippin all the time.

The five ships of Numenor was the deal breaker for me. When William the Conquerer invaded Britain, he had 700 ships. 700, and he was only sailing across the channel. Alex was 100% right, they must be missing the rights to most of the big stories, otherwise it should run: Season 1 - Forge the rings Season 2 - War of Sauron vs. Elves, saved by the Numenoreans Season 3 - Rise of Mordor Season 4 - Capture of Sauron, corruption of Numenor Season 5 - Invasion of Valinor, sinking of Numenor

Episode 6 Galadriel plot - Galadriel wants to sail faster, Miriel and Elendil want to sail at normal speed, and Halbrand and Pharazon demand the ships turn around. Elrond plot - Elrond and Durin continue arguing about the table while walking to Khazad-dum. Arondir plot - Everyone is anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Orcs and hinting that they've done something clever to prepare for the attack. "Will it work?" "It has to work." "But what if it doesn't work?" Nori plot - Malva now loves Slamdalf because he saved her, but still wants to leave Nori's family behind for some unexplained reason. Meanwhile, Nori starts avoiding him because breaking a spellcaster's concentration while he's clearly casting a spell is somehow the spellcaster's fault. Eminem and crew find the wheelbarrow tracks leading away from the crater.

Mightiest humans to have ever lived in the world got reduced to a bunch of clumsy clowns. Very good writing.

Hey Joe, kudos for giving Alex the stage. Good move, you guys all rock. And... couldn't agree more, this series is just heart breaking. I would have loved nothing more than a great adaption of Tolkien's world. What a let down.

if i remember, Numenorians were Powerful warriors that even the Elves respected They lived longer then normal humans as well, its why Aragorn is gonna live longer then a Human, because hes from Numenorian Descent. This show needed better writers, cus Numenor was also Honorable that heeded the call to battle without hesitation.

I can relate to Joe's frustration with Numenoreans, yeah Amazon treatment to them is just disrespectful. These men whose ancestors are the the Edain of the 1st age, are not normal/average men. They did aid the elves during the war of the wrath against Morgoth, mainly the three noble house of Edain (those of Bëor, Haleth and Hador). Numenoreans should at least have some prior knowledge and innate abilities in fighting, but the scene we all saw in training scene is just ridiculous , it feels like these men are just peasants who never fight before and never heard about orcs lol. It's pretty sad. The Numenoreans also have a much longer life and vigor ( their life spans are much longer than normal men) with tall stature like 7ft or more with strong body and mind as described by Tolkien.

I laughed out loud when the Harfoot Lady basically said they should sabotage and condemn Nora's family to death on the off chance a mysterious man is magically making the woods barren.

Galadriel managing to shove four Numenorean guards into her cell (without even using any magic at all, by the look of it) and then make her way to the King's Bedchamber - without being detected by anyone on the way - really was jaw-dropping.

I felt the same way about Wheel of Time that Alex feels about Lord of the Rings.

It struck me that the humans of the south lands are always bitter about the elves watching over them but in the first opportunity they prove the elves right by joining Adar

When Elrond still went on talking about his oath, after he had already showed the damn Mithril to Celeb, my 10 yo Lotr-Fan Self slit its throat.

. I'm mentally disabled and am so happy I'm represented by all the main characters. Its nice to know that handicapped people like me can be in big shows.

They fired the Tolkein expert during filming because he was complaining about how it did not follow lore what did you expect.

I appreciate Joe and company trying to give this a shot and not writing it off right away. It makes it more genuine when they conclude "no, this does indeed suck actually."

This entire show is like a video game with locked off parts of the game behind a paywall.

A lot of people forget that shows like Breaking Bad and even Game of Thrones could be a slow burn at times, feeling as if there was always something around the corner that didn’t come to fruition…but…the reason they forget that is because the dialogue was always brilliant.

Wouldn't it be funny if the Numenorians land in the South Lands and then they link up with Gil-Galad and he goes like "We dead if we don't get mithril" and then the Numenorians say "Oh we can spare a helmet or two." and then Gil-Galad says "What?" And then Elendil says "Yeah we bought like a ton of mithril from the elves and dwarfs way back when we helped you defeat Sauron the first time." Because you know Mithril is not a secret and the elven smiths used to just buy it from the dwarfs and work it, it's an export product of the dwarves.

The fact they robbed Galadriel of her husband says everything you need to know about the hacks who wrote this.

Do not forget that Amazon corporation removed 1-star reviews a few days ago on their platform (after backlash most of them returned) and IMDB which is owned by Amazon corporation did not allow to leave any 1 to 5 out of 10 reviews to be published for the first 2 weeks.

If people haven't read the books and love this series, they've done themselves a disservice - both in terms of indicating to everyone else that they're intellectually limited, and in terms of not having enjoyed a truly epic experience. Amazon should shut this production down today, fire the writing staff, fire the production team, and put out a tender to established greats in hollywood. Hell, pay Ridley Scott 50 million per season to produce and direct, and then go pay John Logan to head up the writing team. It'll be more epic than GOT.

I totally get what Joe is saying about the score being an issue. It's one of the most overlooked things when people talk about film and tv, but it's actually one of the most important components in building the puzzle that is a film or tv show. One of my favorite things about being a film student, was figuring out what to do about sound design and sound mixing when working on projects. One of my favorite things on RU-vid, are these awesome edits people do of the MCU matching scene transitions to the beat of a song, and warrior cat MAPs, where artists come together to bring these battle cats to life, through animation. If there's ONE thing can binds humanity together, it's song. Music. And the truly great film/tv scores, will be talked about for decades. The Lion King 2019 had a MAJOR problem with the score not fitting the scene. When the stampede happened, instead of the intense orchestra telling the audience "this is some serious sht" now you have EPIC, HEROIC HORNS when you see Mufasa coming in to save the day, when ZAZU lands on the tree like WHY. In the original, when Zazu even flies down, the score changes to the strings and wind instruments as the scene progresses in intensity. Then when he spots Simba, those same flutes are a cue; it's letting the audience know of Zazu's emotions along with the expression on his face; the animation and score do all the talking. A good score will remind you of a scene in a movie or TV show. A bad score will just go through the motions, have all the proper cues that's it nothing else. A GREAT score, will put you RIGHT back into the movie or show, the moment those notes hit your ears.

I actually laughed when Galadriel was boarding that ship in epic slow-mo in full armor. Bitch, you swim to the island in trousers, you had your ceremonial foam armor on the elf ship, how in the fuck she got her armor back if she didn't had it in the first place.

I'm so glad and proud of myself for the fact that I skipped out on this show entirely. The problem is that people are even watching this show at all. That supports it. I refuse to support this garbage in any way, shape or form.

I’m 33 and since 2001 when I watch Peter Jackson’s films including The Hobbit films (I, for one, DO like those movies), I laugh and I cry while filled with pure joy and then sometimes I binge the BTS content. Gold standard. Going further back to my early childhood, I watched the 70’s animated films multiple times. I read the books once as an early teen. Few things are ingrained in me damn near since diaper days and Middle-Earth is one of those things. It’s the ultimate fantasy world in my opinion. But when I watch this…I mostly feel nothing. I’ll finish the season and I do also enjoy Durin, but no…this doesn’t come close to Peter Jackson’s film. Jackson had respect for the source. Amazon does not. For me, this is a separate continuity and not required for a super massive LotR marathon.

They nurfed elves. Removed their magic and even made them dependent on what amounts to an elixir to remain immortal like they’re alchemists. Or vampires needing blood.
