In this video we delve into the riotous history of Wolves Subway Army, one of the most notorious football hooligan firms in history.
From their humble beginnings to their involvement in a gangland murder. We also look at pre-subway firms and post-subway firms of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

I grew up in London in the 70s... I had mates from all the big London clubs and a few Man Utd cockney reds. It was well known that an away day at Wolves would be a lively day out and if you didn't go mob handed you could very easily come unstuck.... I remember my mates from West Ham Spurs Arsenal and Chelsea returning to our local pub with black eyes and brused faces after away trips to Wolves! Remember early 80s my mate went with the ICF said he had a lot of respect for Wolves Subway Army and graffiti on the away saying Subway Army will cut you up....

I went there with the Swans in early 80s on a football special. I expected fun and games when we went under the subway, but nothing happened at all.

I remember Wolves and Leeds battling all match at Leeds Road Huddersfield where Leeds were required to play home matches after crowd trouble during Leeds last match of the previous season v West Brom. I was a neutral but actually hated Leeds at the time

Wolves fans were frightening in the 70s. I remember them in Hereford town centre grabbing local girls and forcing them to kiss them. I was only 12 at the time and got battered and had my scarf stolen. They were like barbarians raiding a village. Even the older ones amongst them were horrible, and laughing at what their hooligans were doing. I saw a policewoman flattened by a thrown milk crate too. Caught her right in the mush.

The last story isn't quite true, the tram was packed and the doors were damaged and wouldn't close so the tram wouldn't move.Wolves fans walked along the tracks to the nearest tram station exit and we got buses and taxi's to the ground which was about 5 mins,I got the bus and missed about tge first 10 minutes, no trouble at all.

Good coverage of the 70s, but missed Wolves-Man Utd with United getting chased out of the George 1978 and mass trouble by the subway afterwards, also Cov away just before the Liverpool home game. There were 111 arrests v Chelsea in 1977, and 79 arrests v Leeds in another Molineux match not mentioned here, in the FA Cup QF at Molineux in 1977. Leeds brought 12,000 amongst a 50,000 crowd and that was chaos with no fence. For a relatively small Black Country town, Wolves could be a tough mob, especially with Temple Street mob and Subway Army. CCTV killed it, and gladly so in the late 90s onwards. Subway Army weren't really still in existence by the time Scarboro happened in 1987, in fact that was just a piss up at a seaside town gone wrong and arguably started by Scarboro/Leeds fans after the lad fell through the roof. Incidents missed out include Subway Army in the Peacock at Leeds before the murder back in Wolverhampton, and many of their antics in the 80s, such as Arsenal outside the Holte End FA Cup SF at Villa, or Liverpool and Newcastle at Molineux. Also missed Wolves v Stoke at both grounds which has a history as long as your arm, Wolves in Boothen End 1975, fighting in Boothen Paddock 1979, Wolves also been in Stoke city centre in the 00s and as recently as a couple of years back. Stoke have been in Wolverhampton several times too and are very much respected in Wolverhampton. Also missed Blues v Wolves Moseley Road late 90s/early 00s, which was a very serious incident involving YYA I think, as well as other 90s/00s matches at both grounds v Blues. Also Leeds v Wolves FA Cup QF at Elland Road 1997, or Wolves away at Liverpool in the Cup about a decade ago, and Luton away in the Cup. Overall, Forest and Man United away in the 70s were the worst games I've been too or heard about from a Wolves perspective, but Man Utd away was simply due to vast numbers. Forest in the 70s, in fairness held their own on the unfenced South Bank but it was volatile. And overall, apart from Man Utd, I would say the London firms (Chelsea, West Ham, Spurs, Millwall), plus Forest, Everton, Boro, Stoke, Leeds, Blues, Cardiff were the worst firms which stand out, but all the midland firms are good on their day including WBA, Villa, Cov, Leicester, Derby etc. Also, less obvious clubs that stand out like Pompey, Swansea, both Bristols, Burnley, Grimsby, Vale, Bradford, Newport, Wrexham

Went to most wolves away games and they had some good lads but cant remember taking a backward step, even took there North bank ( mile end days) was at the 1977 game we sorted wolves out before the match and chased them up the steps of the South Bank plod arrived and that was then of that. After the game the old bill had it real tight and we were hemed in and could not do anything by the time we were taken to station plod had shifted any wolves away never see them, but like most teams then if you were not together you could come unstuck, never done anything at our place.

Wolves weren’t a main firm think u need to get ur facts right every team in the country had their own fanzine wolves being called a load of bull and West Ham’s being called bubbles or something and in their fanzine stated Molineux and wolves saying wolves fans 6ft skinheads raving lunatics don’t go also a notional front paper called the bulldog league where it ranked all the firms and in the 80s wolves were top

Maybe not compared to chelsea, West Ham, millwall, Cardiff, Man utd, but on their day would give most a go, certainly at Molineux. Like most midland firms they didnt have the numbers. The Temple Street and Subway were well handy though.
