In today's video I'm diving into the world of Lisa Frank. This is a two part series (part 1 is linked below). Part one talked about the beginnings, the work environment at Lisa Frank Inc., and the slow demise of the brand. This video, part two, will cover lawsuits, alleged scams, the Amina Mucciolo (or otherwise known as Studio Mucci) situation, and collabs.

If you're curious to where the 99% statistic comes from (with the reps making little to no money)here you go:
That statistic comes from a report done by Jon M. Taylor PhD called "the Case (For And) Against Multi-Level Marketing" which the FTC studied and verified. The report in entirety can be found on the FTC website (which I will leave linked below for you). The report is 40 pages long so if you are only looking for the statistic skip to Chapter 7: MLM's abysmal numbers. His statistics were independently verified by other experts prior to being given to the FTC as listed in the appendix. Other experts such as Robert Fitzpatrick have also done their own independent studies and came up with the exact same numbers.

Sounds like a bunch of scammers just scamming each other. And it's a shame because Lisa Frank is a part of my childhood. Loved the brand

I received the blush brush in an Ipsy bag. It was ok, nothing special...until the ferrule literally separated from the handle within 6 months. Keep in mind, I CARE for my makeup brushes; I have cheap-ass Ecotools brushes that are 5+ years old, and MAC brushes that are 20+ years old, and I use these brushes every time I wear eye makeup.

That's really disappointing to hear. I would've hoped that at least the quality would've been somewhat decent. I've had the same brushes for years and I take care of them too. I bought some new ones by the same brand and upon first use I had issues. They were rougher and the bristles (i think that's what they're called, I'm not well versed in makeup) ended up on my face 😑
@wurdnurd1
@wurdnurd1 2 года назад
@@monicahayworth I've had that happen with brushes, especially fluffy brushes (i.e., face powder brushes), even from high quality brands. Typically you can lessen the shedding by thoroughly washing the brushes a few times and hang-dry before using. I try to always use dark-bristled brushes for that reason (easier to see and remove the strays 😁)

@@wurdnurd1 thank you for the tip! I'll do that and then try them out again because they're just sitting there collecting dust at this point 😂

Unfortunately, unless Amina copyrighted that specific hairstyle, it would be impossible to prove. And when it's a deformed version of the human form, you can get away with a lot. That's why Funko can produce so many different characters without getting likeness approval. The Han Solo Funko doll doesn't have to get Harrison Ford's approval. Which likely applies to the doll Amina says is based on her.

I actually didn't even think of that. But that's a great comparison to Funkos!

The Morphe collab being in Target wasn't because Target has any kind of relationship with Lisa Frank, it's because Ulta now has a relationship with Target, and is selling its brands through the site and in a number of stores (Ulta will have mini-stores in Targets nationwide soon, that's part of why so many Targets are going through renovations right now...
@monicahayworth
@monicahayworth 2 года назад
That I do know, I don't think I added that in my video so thank you for clarifying! The other things being sold, the notebooks and when they had the pajamas, that wasn't because of Ulta. The pajamas were a collab with LF though.

Eviction was unfair obviously. I followed her before all this happened and it definitely feels like they stole the concept
@monicahayworth
@monicahayworth 2 года назад
It was very unfair. Especially if the landlord had agreed to receiving late payments in the past. I'm not sure how the laws are out in California but I wonder if it's even legal to refuse rent payments when there's a lease still put in place. The similarities between cloudland and the LF popup are eerily similar. Not to mention, whoever ran the social media for LF back then knew of Amina and even interacted with her. They had to have seen cloudland or at least heard of it, especially if brands like Ikea and Urban Outfitters collabed with her.

@@monicahayworth yeah Lisa frank thinks just because they use their own branded art it's not stealing a design concept.

Did LF steal the concept, or just extend the concept from consumer goods, to architecture and corporate design (see their HQ), to living environment? I mean, how much did LF impact Amina's aesthetic? Real questions here...
@monicahayworth
@monicahayworth 2 года назад
@@wurdnurd1 the issue here is Amina claims that's why she was being evicted from her apartment. If that was the case, then it's more than just stealing/extending a concept or impacting someone's aesthetic, it's someone's actual living situation. I mean we don't know the whole story because we don't know the landlord's side. Judging by her last update on the situation, for legal purposes we probably won't ever know the full story. Even with what we do know though, in my opinion everything is very, if not too, coincidental.

The responses Amina got were clearly racially motivated, It's a disappointing example of what Black professionals and creatives have to deal with. While I do believe Amina was right to speak out and to feel used, she was unfortunately not entitled to reap the benefits of her work and image. With that being said, both businesses didn't have to (and shouldn't have) responded the way they did and the sheer fact that neither entity were held accountable or forced to apologies for such disgusting and racist statements is proof that no matter how unique, hard-working, educated, successful, or palatable a Black person is, we will still only be seen as slaves to be used, stolen from, and taken advantage of and never expected to speak out or take action, otherwise we will be mocked and metaphorically whipped and put back in our places.
