The Rise and Fall of Mike Duffy - the fifth estate

This is the 4th straight show I've watched. You know your show is good if I'm watching Mike Duffy and politics

As an American, 2 things strike me...1) This is kid’s stuff when it comes to scandals. 2) The Taxpayers’ representatives blow $5000 on an inflatable effigy of the guy??? And THAT’S not wasteful? Man, I love Canada!

My mom retired from Air Canada and knew Mike Duffy. She was able to get myself and classmates a tour of his Ottawa-based show on CJOH. I would have to confirm but I am near certain it was after he left CBC. My classmate was on cloud nine as we hung out on the set and what I saw was a guy who just liked to have people around to talk tall tales of Ottawa; and what I found interesting is that his focus was entirely internal to Ottawa politics. It was interesting too because my classmate became a professional journalist in the U.S. and I think he, like me, would not have suffered from the overstep Duffy had in this Senate scandal. Duffy had three fail safe ways to avoid this situation after it was revealed, but he instead overplayed what he perceived to be his political capital on "the Hill". This observation is made clear at the end of the program. And that is what I find really strange: as a Hill journalist he ought to have known the rules on loyalty and privilege but he appeared to simply ignore it. He is a very strange character at the end of the day ... a Hill groupie of sorts.

The senate needs to be abolished or extremely cut back

He may not have been an actual resident of PEI but he could definitely pass for a spud.

Lol 7 minutes into it and it's obvious the guy's a crook. He lived in Ottawa since the 1970s. He had a cabin in PEI that he didn't live in. He ran his campaign as though he was from PEI even though he lived in Ottawa. Once he gets elected, he starts claiming living expenses for having to live in Ottawa (where he's already been living since the 1970s). To the tune of $90,000 he claimed he needed, for the incontinence of not being able to live in Prince Edward Island ..where he didn't live. How is there any debate on this?

The Senate shouldn't be abolished; it should be reformed. For areas of low population, they get no democracy at all due to always being outvoted. The US Senate addresses this by electing two Senators from each state, regardless of population.

maybe I need to rewatch this again, in order to under the huge gravity of the situation, but it just seems to be like this was a tiny insignifiacent scandal, compared to the more atrocious policies the harper government was implemented. but it is astounding that if the little guy or any bartenders or small business plays with the books a little bit they're punished to the full extent of the laws, whereas goverments, big banks, and people like rob ford, get a tiny slap on the wrist, as worst they lose their jobs with a generous package, and aren't prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

Interesting how the _Fifth Estate_ doesn't do an episode on Adrian Clarkson's tenure as Governor-General.

One of my exboyfriends told me years ago that Duffy and him had a " expereince" that was at best UNTOWARD. whenever he saw him on TV news he would shudder and recoil in disgust & shock. So much that i knew better to never probe for details for fear that i would open a huge hornets nest of issues, bad memories and problems.

I met Mike Duffy a few times, he's a really nice guy. I cannot believe they are going after him the way they are for peanuts compared to many other scandals.

There is a sign in front of Queen's Park in Toronto that says "Watch Your Step". It refers to the steps, but it is good council. Ottawa should get a similar sign.

It makes no sense that the senate is appointed by the PM. I can't believe it is allowed. The senate should be voted in separately by the public, to ensure that they are not just a bunch of the PM's lackeys. The way it is now is very flawed, however I don't believe the senate should be abolished, as they provide an important role. However, it should not be left to the PM to decide who they are, when they are supposed to be impartial!!

I am watching this in 2020, and laughing because now days people have open mind about politics because of technology, more than ever before. So, politicians must learn new tactics to fool people.

let those who want to serve the people ... be taken care of with food clothing and shelter as they do the job and a modest retirement ... and then you would see how many of them really have the care of people in their hearts .... a few would .... those are the ones that should do the job .... but of course they would be constantly bombarded to compromise their position by the scum who do it (buy them off) now ... but they should be able to report those who try to bribe them and also be overseen so that they stay true to the people (with test bribes to see if they would take them) this would be great for the people and businesses , to do all things fairly and justly

how does this scandal compared to the sponsorship scandal of the liberal government of paul martin that saw the liberals kicked out of office replaced by the conservatives led by harper? I never really understood that scandal, much like and this is me being naïve, I don't understand much of the huge gravity of this scandal.

It's a question of TWO LAWS in this Country.. along with the loss of Taxpayer's Money.. Just when will the Voters and Taxpayers of Canada get the Break they so desperately need?
