LOL, I knew Jim wasn't gonna like that situation, and I was right, haha But for real, I appreciate you, Jim, for speaking up about being uncomfortable and feeling for those girls. Very few reactors actually have spoken up about it and honestly, I do too. People forget that I'm a filmmaker first and foremost. And so my showing and my depiction of certain things, doesn't necessarily mean I agree with it. "Depiction doesn't equal endorsement" kind of thing. Chapter 10 is still, in my opinion, my worst episode, solely because I had to go and find framing devices separate from Bangtan, which I don't usually do. And the fact that the topics of this episode sort of get jumbled somewhere in the middle just due to lack of material that had a running theme between them. And, because it was for a variety show, it was over the top for the camera. There's no denying that. For me, I struggled to find a way to get across the idea that this group dynamic and "getting along" with one another is not that common in the genre as people think. In the end, I feel as though I didn't do a very good job with it. But I appreciate you trying to understand the chat. For some reason a lot of ARMY really like this episode. I personally find it a low point of my series, which is a shame, because I really like some of the stuff I did in the middle of this one, lol

I personally understand both opinions. You did a great job picking footage in a way that could explain what you wanted to explain in this episode. It's just that the program with those girls was made in a very dramatic way, that was the only issue, which you can't control. I wish you the best for the rest, thank you so much for your hard work 💜

I understood what that dude was trying to do. But then again, I am an Asian, so I am used to shows like that. For a western audience, it might come as a cultural shock. They would have difficulty grasping the concept.

I want to explain a bit, this episode was to highlight the problems in k-pop, because nowadays, and for years, hundreds of groups start every year, and even if they have a little success, they end up breaking up because in the end they want solo success above all else, which I can understand, but they use idol groups to get started. I don't wish to bring bad luck, but for example, it's very likely that Blackpink, despite their success, won't want to renew their contract soon - for many reasons - but one of them being that even if these young ladies appreciate each other, they are more oriented towards solo activities than collective ones. BTS, for example, only has solo projects for music and V (acting), which makes sense because they also have the possibility of expressing themselves in solo work, but whether it's commercials, interviews, photoshoots, they are always together, always. They are a team but also a family, this episode shows that as these groups see each other is the reason for their longevity. K-pop groups have had so many scandals with members who behind the scenes hate each other, compete with each other while in the same group, don't bond with each other, even go as far as not speaking to each other or even bullying. And cultivating team spirit is not innate. Jungkook for example has already said that very young he was very selfish and possessive when it comes to certain things, what made him change ? It's the influence of the group, of these members who are a family, all of them are influenced in the positive, it's not innate for them either to be like that, these are relationships that are forged thanks to the time invested and the will. I think to say that BTS was just like that because they were born like that is wrong, they had to work hard not only for the music and all the aspect of their career, but also humanly to grow, evolve and make this group last for them to get to this point. It's work. And Z. Tao, the ex-Exo member who got that speech right. I understand that it comes out hard, but if you would see the survival shows for trainees, the coaches are not kidding, it's not like in the west, here they recruit talents to have real groups that aim to be successful. They don't have time to be soft with those who are not motivated enough, the k-pop, j-pop, c-pop industries are very big and competitive in Asia. And honestly, the coaches in these programs don't say it enough, but dancing and singing are just prerequisites, they also need to humanely have members who are not going to leave after a few months or years before the end of the contract. These idols who enter groups to have a solo career are hurting these groups, they don't understand that the vibe of the group is also reflected. So, yes, they must cherish this life for which they have sacrificed so much, they must also when entering these groups try to fit in and create a spirit, they must also be proud of those who can obtain solo rewards or even who receive more light, because ultimately, it highlights the whole group. When V acted in a k-drama, he got recognition as an actor, the members were proud of that, because through that he made their group shine too, when there are stage collaborations between k-pop groups with only a few members (like Taemin - Shinee - and Jimin for example), or collaborations like recently Suga ft. Juice Wrld who gave him light in American rap which ultimately interested people in BTS. All that, the attitude and behavior they have, they managed to find the balance between being able to explore and shine solo (acting, production, singing ... etc) and also shine collectively. This is what many idols lack. BTS are a family they forged through blood, sweat and tears. Good reaction tho, 💜.

Took the words right out of my mouth! I understand Jim’s point, but this isn’t the kiddie leagues or anything. These people are trying to be professionals and part of being professional and part of a group is realizing that it takes effort and work to make your group shine. Yeah, you can be born with certain dispositions that might make teamwork easier for you, but it still requires a lot of effort to work with others. And he’s saying it to all of the girls because it’s a lesson for all of them, even if many of them did stop.

Is also important to highlight that BTS have mentioned before that they are aware other groups envy their team dynamic and relationship.

@@rachiepants3408 When you think about it, the shows in the west like the Voice, X factor, Got Talent, Star Academy are the only kind of program that are comparable to the production of survival shows in Asia, but the reality hardly compares. These survival shows are ruthless in Asia, the coaches are tough on their words, they spare no one, they're not there to make you feel good or like them, it's a business. While in the West, it's like the famous McDonald's phrase, you come as you are, and the coaches are rarely harsh, they even apologize when there are losers who have to leave. This is also probably why these shows rarely produce stars who will stay in the musical landscape or become super popular, the case of 1D for example is extremely rare, and again it's because they were a group of young people beautiful and attractive, which has given them the attention of a particular audience. The scene with Z. Tao, even if it would happen on the shows in the west, they would never put it on screen. The music industry is different in the two hemispheres. So I understand that Jim, with his western perspective even though he's becoming more familiar with the Asian one, finds it tough, but business is business. These companies, which invest in these groups for years to come, will be demanding with whom they will recruit, especially since we are talking about producing Idols and not Pop Stars, a certain standard and precisely prerequisites are required to be considered. Z. Tao actually was maybe overly dramatic, but he did them a favor - in my opinion - because these up-and-coming idols want their place so badly, that they forget that once they have it, they are not alone. And, I sometimes wonder if people realize that suddenly, it's like you're put in an apartment with more than five strangers, to live with them for months or even years, and you have to learn to live and work together. God, I've been roommates many times, sometimes with people I barely knew, and it's not easy, so I can't even imagine having to find synergy because my career depends on it, it's not easy, it takes patience, effort, a lot of pain. Being Idols, as I say, is often much more complicated and demanding than being a singer would be.
@anaisc8733

@@zandeeganymede7599 I agree. I think that's why we can literally have ships for all the members, and sometimes between three or four others, any, because they have not only learned to have chemistry on stage, but behind, some of them have lived together for more than 10 years. Imagine living daily with people, through pain and together towards the same goal. Because in a normal family, in the end, we talk about daily life but we spend more time at work or at school than at home. Some members of BTS have been in school together, and then off and for those who didn't go to school it was entire hours of being together, in the same career, during vacations, they literally do EVERYTHING together. They only see their family twice a year, maximum, so of course they have become a family. But a different family : more dependent, because they keep repeating it, but they don't want to pursue solo careers, they want to stay together as long as possible, all they do is together, when some members aren't close to others for a few days, they miss each other, or they are not comfortable. Their group was not based on members who wanted to make a solo career at the start and who were part of the group for after going solo, no, each one had the possibility of leaving several times but they stayed. I think that in terms of relationships and group dynamics, BTS cannot be surpassed by anyone, really no one.

I don’t know if you noticed but during the race bts was in 2nd through most of it before they came in first, though the announcers ignored them and praised people behind them. A lot of army use it as a representation of their relationship with the media. Though they have done well from the beginning the media has repeatedly ignored them, but bts keep on pushing and come out on top where they can no longer be ignored. 💪🏻

I think the point of this episode was really to show the difference between most KPop groups and BTS. In most KPop groups the members are forced to compete for screen time and the most popular members will get solo promotions (roles in TV shows, solo debuts, commercials, brand endorsements) leaving the less popular members behind and frequently underpaid and mistreated. This is especially true for members who aren't from Korea who often get even worse treatment from the companies. Despite this competitiveness, there's an expectation among fans that all the members of a group will be really close friends, regardless of the fact that they're just co-workers (there are some infamous stories about groups where the members hated each other), so they often have to play that to the cameras and few are allowed to be honest about what they feel. This is especially hard in really large groups when there's even less screen time to go around and it's hard to be close with so many people. BTS aren't the only exception to the rule, but they are a very prominent one. All the members are extremely close and each has their own unique dynamic with the others, consider each other family and are shown to consistently hang out with each other even when the cameras aren't on, even going on vacation together without cameras. When Yoongi was recovering from shoulder surgery, the members constantly talked about him; calling him to settle disagreements and to get him to do a speech during award shows, they brought pictures of him everywhere so he'd always be in group shots etc. they clearly really missed him. I think I remember reading somewhere that Dispatch (paparazzi that like to make dating rumours etc.) got sick of following BTS at one point because every time they followed one of them hoping to see them meeting up with a girl, they'd just be meeting one of the other members. BTS in a recent interview jokingly described themselves as having a strictly business relationship and it was a meme for months because it was just such a ridiculous concept. I think it would be hard to express this concept in video form, because with other groups it's not talked about and with BTS it's such a given that they're really friends. But I do think that's what this was trying to convey.

That's exactly the point of this episode. You explained it very eloquently. Also, the point of adding that clip of that guy lecturing the girls is that his speech was emphasizing a moral value: "you are in a team together, therefore, you have to be kind to each other, help each other and work together, because in this industry, you can only survive if you have each other backs, so stop seeing each other as rivals and actually start acting like a team". Now, the clip is out of context, so I don't know what did the girls do to anger him, if they did something that bad and needed a lecture or if he was being too harsh, he may have been over-acting for the dramatism of the tv show, or he may be a jerk... But, I think the editor simply used that footage to express that they believe in that principle: that teamwork is key for the success of s group and good teamwork requires for the members to make an effort to understand each other and take care of each other, even if you're not "besties". (Also, I may be wrong because I've never been an EXO fan... But that guy looks like an ex-member of EXO, and if I remember what well, I heard the foreign members of that group felt super isolated and discriminated against in that group... So, maybe it's a person who felt left out or abandoned or ignored on his own group... He certainly sounded like it was something personal... But, I may be way off..) In any case, I don't agree with everything he said but... There was some good points... Being grateful/gratitude, not being envious of each other/not letting envy or insecurity corrupt your behavior, not letting anyone behind/helping each others shortcomings, what matters is not your personal screen time but that the team looks good/the overall performance, etc...
@antoinettefinner3488

Thats what I felt as well. Whenever I see this clip I think about what V said... about how if he falls he doesn't get back up alone. They all rise up together. Being in a group where some of the members don't like each other or are out for themselves can be detrimental to that group. And it happens to everyone. Even NKOTB had a point where 2 of the member couldn't stand to look at one another and it was at that point that the group kinda disbanded. So I get what is happening and what they were trying to do . Was he a little dramatic ...yes but then again its being recorded and a group of girls celebrating while someone is on the ground hurt says a lot about their humanity and where their head is and doesn't come across well to potential fans. He did sound like he has been fed up with this particular group of ladies and that was the last straw. But that's my thoughts and may be wrong.

Suga has suffered for many years with depression, anxiety and OCD. After his panic attack had canceled the concert in Kobe, he then had a short break and went back to the venue when it was empty to relfect, and wrote a long letter for ARMY, and also referred to it in his song "The Last" .....The translation of his letter is attached for you: Hello, this is Suga. Many people were curious as to what I was doing on my break, and to simply put it, I walked a lot, slept a lot and thought a lot. I wanted to go on a trip to organize my thoughts before working on my mixtape. I also had a place I must go to. I wanted to do things I was able to do not as a 24-year old BTS’ Suga, but as a 24-year old Min Yoongi. It was a time where I looked back at myself. The things I will say now are things I wanted to share not as a singer to a fan or as BTS to ARMY, but to talk to you as human to human. I've always wanted to be a cool person to a lot of people. Having rationale thoughts and making rationale decisions in any situations. I wanted to live like my father. My father said to take a look around you when there's something to be happy about. Be calm and make rationale decisions when happy. The first day when "I need u" got 1st place, I took a look at my surroundings. Every minute I'm happy, I acted as if I'm not. When I'm sad I acted as if I'm not. Even if I like it, I acted as if I don't like it. I pretended to be cold-hearted and pretended to be strong. If a joy is shared, it will be doubled but if a sadness is shared, it won't get smaller. That's what I thought. I know I'm a person who's bad at expressing my emotions but I've been living that way and I thought it's right. One day, I can't exactly remember when, I was in a car with my father and he said "Yoongi, don't live like me". The first day of vacation. The first day ever since I was born, I drank with my family. It has been 6 years since I left home. We were all just chatting, listening to stories that we haven't heard of. The strong and cool father that I know, knows how to feel hurt and sad, how to feel happy and love.. 1.5-pyeong in the practice room, my studio is my wide meadows and narrow prison. I can do anything and at the same time, I can't really do anything. I can work on music thoughtlessly for 20 hours, but I can also sit there and not do anything but just thinking for 20 hours. I was 13 years old when I first started writing my own lyrics. When I listen to good music, I will feel really excited and I feel really happy more than anything. To me, music is my hope and my happiness, I also want to be someone's hope and happiness. Actually I'm someone who would just walk away rather to crash and feel pain. Anyone hates being hurt and I don't want to get hurt. In "Nevermind", "If you feel like you a going to crash then accelerate more". Perharps, that's actually what I wanted to say to myself. The most upsetting time for me when I face a large number of people, is when I face myself who isn’t able to be fair to everyone. I didn’t want to hurt anyone, but there are times I couldn’t do that. I think I’m still a person that lacks in many things. The second day of the concert in Kobe... I don’t think I’ve ever slept deeply after that day. Could it be because of the fact that I gave a wound to many people? Whenever I fell asleep, I would wake up with cold sweat. Because I already once have not been able to go on stage before and have hurt many people, I said that I’ll go up (to perform) no matter what situation arises. Everyone tried to stop me. I really cried a ton at the situation of not being able to go up on stage. And I know crying is losing. It’s really easy for me to cope with my own sorrow, but witnessing those who love me in sadness is very hard. I made them sad, once again. If I could go back to that day, I would go on stage no matter what. So there was just one place to go. I went to Kobe during my break. Many people tried to stop me from going, but I didn’t want to be ashamed of myself any longer. So I just went to Kobe without planning. It was my second time visiting the concert venue after a concert. The first was Ax Hall at late night after finishing the first Red Bullet concert. The second time was the Kobe World Memorial Hall, at where I failed to perform. I hate becoming a numb person. I didn’t want to take the love and these glorious days for granted. I didn’t want to be a numb person. That’s why I visited the venues again on my own. (T/N: He’s saying he doesn’t want to take all the love he’s receiving as granted, he really wants to appreciate every single love he gets. He’s meaning numb in the way by how he wouldn’t be able to feel what the fans feel about him. He’s basically saying he wants to appreciate every love he gets from his fans) I liked being on stage, and I still do. When I was 17 and performed in front of 2 people I stood proudly and made eye contact with them during my performance. However after my debut I feel that I have not been righteous towards myself. I think it may be because I knew better than anyone that I wasn’t perfect. And then on the day of the first performance of HYYH on stage I made proud eye contact with the audience that I didn’t do in quite a while. But after the second day of the Kobe concert when I was unable to stand on stage, I didn’t have the courage to confidently confront the large number of people. So that’s why I visited Kobe, the concert hall again. I kept wandering around the area by the concert hall from the time I arrived there until the time our performance was due to begin that day. From the ticketing booth to the entrance and the concert hall - I wanted to feel the same emotions as you all from every nook and corner. I felt many emotions. Happiness, the excited nervousness felt while waiting for the performance, sadness, resentment, anger, regret, etc. I wanted to understand you all, and I do understand. So I’m sorry and apologetic, for I am not a perfect human being. I’m a person who is weak but acts strong. Once again I realized that I was a person who’s lacking. Although I’m not religious, I prayed at that place. After all, at the end, it was a fated day. Even if it’s ended, let’s not let this heart become numb. To me, who wanted to spend every moment alone, you all were taking up quite a large part (of my mind). Age and gender, nationality and religion, what language you use - all of that isn’t important to me. "Whether you're young or old, whether you have a hidden child, I don't care", haven't I said this already. That day, we unexpectedly had a Music Bank broadcast and I boarded a plane and returned a day before planned. I returned after organizing my many thoughts. Once again, while feeling that I’m a blessed person, I felt that I need to be a person who lives every moment feeling thankful. This is the moment I realizied the fact that 24-year old Min Yoongi, who hates being an adult, is standing in front of the threshold to being an adult. Thank you for making me a blessed person, ARMY. Although I’m never able to say this because I’m bad at expressing myself. Here I am conveying my feelings and thoughts once more through a piece of less-than-satisfactory writing. I will live while being thankful of every moment as I am such a lacking human being. I love you, ARMY.

The point with the MC getting angry at the girls in the program is...yes they're 101 participants, they're in a show competing with each other..he was angry because these 101 girls will become part of the group...but, they didn't show teamwork. Teamwork is very very important. Unlike in the west, when you see a colleague down, here in Asia, you show your respect to your competitors by helping them get up. Winning when your competitor is down isn't really a win, it just shows what kind of person you are. You win for the sake of winning. But, this show and other trainee programs aren't about that. It's not about being fast to win the race. And that thinking is an individualistic thinking...which is a selfish thinking. You won't understand this because artists in the west which presses for individual rights....but in trainee programs where groups are made, your action/words/thoughts is for the collective. It may be a trainee program, but these types of programs help develop trainees of future groups a collective mindset and behavior. You think the MC is harsh? That wasn't even 1/4 or 1/8 of what the companies' management does. They're even stricter. But, an industry which fosters idols/idol groups...this is a cut throat industry. That's why most groups disband including boy bands in the west.

Not sure if any army already commented it but in ep6 of BTS docu-series Break The Silence, (pls check this series out if you have time) BTS talked about their close relationship. Jungkook even mentioned how other idols he knows envy them for having genuine friendship and loving relationship as a team. Cause it’s really not that common in their industry. Many Korean celebrities who have worked with them, like Jessi, have confirmed that BTS are the same onscreen and off-screen, and are genuinely close to each other which she hadn’t seen in other groups.

I think what started the confusion is that the intro was a couple of different clips, not from the same show. The first one was from an idol survival show - not in Korea, but in China although adapted from a Korean idol survival show. And I completely agree that the mentor (Zitao, former member of EXO) was harsh on the girls who were only doing what they thought they should be doing. But the second clip was from a reality show of the already debuted girl group 9Muses. And what 9Muses was saying was that the humanity they had as trainees was lost once they debuted because the members (9 of them when they debuted) continued as if it were still a competition. And because they kept competing for popularity, for screen time, for endorsements - then teamwork was gone and members felt isolated and some just wanted to quit. And there lies the problem. A lot of times, because competition is so ingrained during the trainee period, these members forget that they would have to work with each other to achieve their goals. There is such an individualistic approach to success that everyone sees the group as a stepping tone to a solo career. And I get it. For a lot of idol groups, there is an expiration date. The dreaded 7 year curse, because idol contracts usually cover only 7 years. If the group doesn't become successful, that contract won't be renewed. And if members don't find their own footing in the industry in the first couple of years, once your agency disbands you, you have no career after. However, juxtapose that whole idea next to the dynamics of BTS and you see a whole different picture. BTS, from the beginning, was a team. I would suppose a lot of that had to do with BigHit management and Bang PD. But even during their trainee period, RM as the leader emphasized this. He instilled the idea of teamwork rather than competition because they would have to think about the team after their debut. Yes, it might help that all 7 members are innately kind and caring people, but teamwork is still a skill they had to learn. Teaching each other, vouching for one another, taking care of their brothers - this is their culture. And even after debut, any solo projects they might have were only side projects. Nothing comes before the group. BTS is now on their 9th year as an idol group, with all original members still intact, no promoted solo projects, and it looks like they're looking at the long road ahead - a rarity in the kpop industry.

I have seen them grow and watched their journey (watching several video clips of BTS in Bangtan channel and other channels too) Jin (as the eldest in the group and who came from a rich family) embraced the training life and lived with them, and we back in the days when JK was still in school he would prepare for JK's school meals, drove him to school. And Suga as the second eldest would pick JK from school just like what real siblings would do. I find it sweet and cute. Like they could just let him do that on his own but no, they were sincerely concern with the welfare of their youngest member. Then we all know Jin and Suga would cook most of the time for the members. I admire how they are always there for each other, to listen, to care, to have fun, to laugh, to cry, and cheer for each other. Maybe it helps that they are not of the same age, they have this love, care and respect for each and every one. Like what RM said he may be their leader (and they all follow him) but when it comes to their house where they equally own and share he reveals that in their house Jin rules the house and the all follow his rules. Since they have lived for almost a decade now they have learned to adjust and accept each and every one's individuality and flaws completely. I can say they have a wonderful relationship despite their differences because till now they still lived together and they get along so well. Its also team effort that maknaes listens to their hyungs. Looks like they influenced each other as they grow, it can be seen by their actions. As what JK said he the members has influence him in many ways and Suga said that the members are the closest friends he got aside from his family. So yeah they all treat eaxh other as family.

2 things can be true at once: you can feel empathetic for the girls as we know these training programs are harsh and maybe they didn’t know to stop, and you can understand that the lesson he was giving to them was necessary for them to work as a team and group in the future. Forging bonds is essential to longevity. Chat was super funny today though and I see both sides of the argument. But I agree with Tao more. This isn’t the kiddie leagues, all these girls can dance and sing (the prerequisites as Tao called them). What makes BTS stand out so much (besides their lyrics) is their personalities and relationships to each other 🤷‍♀️, which is concept he was trying to get the girls to realize💜💜

Also, just a quick comment: Not all 7 members of BTS were just “born that way”, born with a personality that makes it easier to create friendships and teamwork. They had to put in a lot of work to understand and get along with each other

I think something to note that I’ve seen a few comments mention, but to make it less redundant is, these idol shows, it’s about survival. There’s a mindset of winning and with hundreds of groups out there, it’s hard to really make it because eventually, they lose sight of what they were supposed to be fighting for. The girls continued on with the race, even if they were in different teams, overall, they are considered one team, because they are all there to debut.

It was a short visit bt he really showed he is a great mentor. Afterall he is bangtan's dance leader.

the clip from the Idol Championship is one of my favourites from BTS at that time, it just perfectly portrays their career! The commentators never mentionned BTS, and completely ignored them because the 3 other groups were more “popular”, and so they didn’t have any expectations towards BTS even though they were pretty much second the whole race. But look at them, the underdogs won the race! and they were completely bewildered as to what to say. This was hilarious. This is the perfectly metaphor to their career : when you look at the music charts in 2014-15, BTS were doing good, but they were not considered so. Also you can see Jin having fun with ARMYs in the audience, which shows our special bond with the group 🥰 and did you hear their cheer? ARMYs were and are so loud, but the industry still didn’t seem to acknowledge BTS at that time Yes the Idol Star Athletics Championships is held every year, and idol groups come to have “fun” times and compete in different sports. BTS have stopped coming to these shows after 2017

what i like about this episode is that it does show that BTS are a lil special in the industry. There are just a few groups that really do get along and BTS know. They talked about it in a RUN episode (obviously they didn't say names or anything, but they stated that their connection isn't something that is usual). That Rookie show is cut throat and it plays the girls out against each other. There can't be a good group dynamic if you get put into a group with people who where happy to stab you in the back to get further in the competition. What BigHit and more even Namjoon did, was redesigning the playing field under Bighit Trainees. What they did was turning it into friendly competition. Yes, you are all here to get that spot, but on the way there, you help each other get there. Ig that is also a big thing that will help bulding a team. To this day BH trainees train under friendly competition (that's also why TXT has such a good dynamic). Regarding SUGA and his panic attacks. I feel it too. I suffer from agoraphobia (fear of crowds) and even going to the supermarket can be challenging for me sometimes. That goes together with panic attacks. Yoongi talking openly about his struggles really helped me and made me personally find ways to lessen the stress i feel. What is helping me, are akkupressure rings you can wear on your finger. It distracts me enough to get through the city when i need to buy something.

Yes, this episode highlights why teamwork mentally is so important if you wanna be in a band in the first place, and why BTS haven't broke up and still so strong. This is the reason why BTS IS SO DIFFERENT FROM OTHER BANDS. They themselves have said that they know other bands envy their friendship

I think the guy (former EXO member) was hard but what he said was correct. I think any trainee who watched the program learned a lesson that day. The system is made to be competitive, it’s for a large part a very lonely rise to debut. Despite that, if you debut and have not learned how to work, fail and succeed as a team then the team will not last. Greed & pride have been one of the biggest reasons groups fail. Some think they are better and some think they deserve more, they forget what being grateful implies. This counts for any girl/boygroup anywhere around the world, greed to outshine the others are hurdles u have to overcome in order to succeed as a team. It’s hard, that’s why only few groups have true friendships beyond the workspace. They overcame their greed, put aside their pride and always prioritised the groups harmony rather than individual pleasures. It’s a long road and a lot of work, but ur mindset must be right from the start, and thats what the dude was getting at, while some were cheering for their success, another was right in front of their eyes suffering.

completely agree with your rage. it seems ridiculous that these survival shows preach about showing humanity and consideration for fellow members/teammates since these shows (and the networks/broadcasting stations behind them) are also the ones that promote the cut-throat atmosphere in the kpop/cpop world. they continuously pit people against one another and compare every single detail and point out every single flaw publicly -- what do they expect from the participants, then?? of course they're gonna look out for their own survival before all else!!! it's so dumb and this is why I hate these survival shows man. they will purposely milk all these emotional moments as much as they can just to gain viewership. (although I also do get the point of this which was to show how BTS managed to cultivate that "us above me" mentality and are genuine friends and almost family.)

I just wanted to say that when it comes to the guy yelling at the girls and so on - I'm with you on your take on this. You're right, it is very militaristic in the way that you tear people down until they have nothing left from self esteem to even simple thoughts so that they become unable to make even the smallest decisions without being told what to think. I know many people in the comments are justifying his actions but that does not change what will be the eventual outcome.

In Koeea you are an adult at 20 (in Korean Age... approx 18-19 in International Age) Korean Age vs International Age - difference is 1-2 years depending on if their birthday has been.... Rule of thumb - if it's before their birthday - subtract 2 years to get international age. if it's after their birthday - subtract 1 year to get their international age. When you are born you are considered 1 year old. Then on 01 Jan every year you add another year to your age, no matter what your birthdate is. .... EG: TaeHyung (V) born 30 Dec 95 ...... current International Age 26 (Korean Age 28). ... 2 years difference So Tae born 30 Dec 95 is 1 year old, then on 01 Jan 96 he is 1 more year older (so they would say he is 2 years old, when we would say he is 2 days old.) So he was considered 28 in Korea since 01 January, we would say he is 26 turning 27 in Dec. EG: Hoseok (JHope) born 18 Feb 1994...... current International Age 27 (Korean Age 29)... .currently 2 years difference He will turn 28 on 18 Feb - but will still be considered 29 in Korea (the difference is then only 1 year - until Jan 1 - then back to 2 years difference) It's a different way of looking at age, from new years day - JHope is living his 29th year (since conception) - instead of - he will be turning 28 (since birth).... EG: Jeongguk (JK) born 01 Sept 97...... current International Age 24 (Korean Age 26)... .2 years difference He was considered 26 in Korea since January, even though we would say he's 24 turning 25 in Sept. So JK started with BigHit in 2011 at 13, but he would say 15 in korean age. At BTS debut on 13 Jun 13 JK was 15 in international age (17 in korean age) Hope that makes sense!!

From what you said, it seems like in USA if someone does something wrong they're the only one being scolded? Here in Italy - and it seems in Asia too - it's not really like that. For example, when i went to school, if a classmate did something, the whole class would be scolded. Not because everyone was at wrong too, but because it could still teach a lesson to everyone. So, I didn't see something wrong in it because I'm used to it.

As far as the guy yelling at the girls... they were competing for advantages and/or prizes. When the 1 fell her team stopped running and checked on her but the other teams kept racing. We must remember that honor is a very big part of their culture. To be honorable all should have stopped racing until the fallen has been cared for or removed from the area. By not stopping it leaves the team, that stopped to care for a fallen teammate, out of the race and contention for the advantages/prize. That is why he said that the race would be restarted. Yes he was loud and maybe western society will think a little overboard. However, making sure that your actions in life remain honorable and proper is important so that the team will function with honor. Bad decisions or dishonorable actions affect the whole team and lable. You can look up many idols that have recently been jailed for illegal and dishonorable behavior like rape, drugs, trafficking, etc. It destroyed the idol groups that they belonged to. So I believe that he was trying to teach that there will be times where situations will you to be selfless and aware of the world around you. A single person is only a small part of the big picture. He may have not phrased it perfectly clear but that is what I gained from it. Borrahae 💜🤗🇺🇲

Honestly I see what you're saying about how it's an unfair thing to expect those girls to have stopped when the whole point of the show is for them basically fight to win but I also see it like this: those idol survival shows are filmed, aired and put online and more importantly everyday people vote for the trainees they want to stay and in an episode like that you have to ask yourself, would you vote for the girl who stopped to check on an injured opponent or the girl who kept running? Maybe it's too much to ask but even if it's just for you own benefit, stopping to help was the better move.

50:10 Ztao was extremely correct with the reprimand he gave. One participant fell and some went to help, not necessarily those on her team. And the others kept running, ignoring the situation and were charging for their results without worrying about the one that fell. As it was before, in a team, if one goes down, they all go down together. If your companions can't look back to reach out to you, what are they there for? just to vibrate when you help them win? empathy is something we should feel for anyone and even more for those who are by our side fighting to win. The BTS members have never moved forward if one of them is left behind. That's being a partner, friend, family.

That opening clip was of a TV show. So no one is getting weeded out based on how fast they run or anything. End of the day the viewers are voting for who ends up in the group based on their live performances. The race (and other things they do outside of those performances) are just for fun. This race specifically was to pick songs to perform in a more fun way than just having everyone vote. I get what you’re saying Jim, but I think you confused the clip with what would happen in a regular trainee program where EVERYTHING is cutthroat, so some trainees might be a bit more ruthless.

Let me explain the opening scenes as verteran kpop fan: The first scene is not korean but a 'survival show' program in China. These shows, contestants compete for a slot in a group that will debut after the show wraps up. These are popular in Korea too, with groups like iKON and MonstaX coming from such programs. The man yelling is Huang Zitao and if you know his story you will understand why he is so emotional. Tao was in a group called EXO under SM entertainment. They took the kpop industry by storm, and were the BTS of kpop before BTS surpassed them in recent years (although they're still very very success to this day). EXO was divided into EXO-K(orean) and EXO- M(andarin chinese) and targeted those markets respectively with the same songs in different languages. TAO was one of four Chinese members of EXO M and if you know anything about SM and foreign idols its that the foreign idols are treated horrible in that company. It's difficult for everyone within a big3 group because of expectations and standards they expect but foreigners have it inexplicably worse. TAO, Kris/Yifan, and Luhan (3of the 4 Chinese members [the last remaining chinese member, Yixing/Lay, is still technicallypart of the group but isnt really active with them anymore like he used to be]) would all go onto leave Exo and even file lawsuits against SM ent for the abuses and treatments they experienced. Being forced to work through injuries, inhumane working conditions, favoritism towards korean members, etc etc. All the members had throughout the chaos that came with the sudden explosive popularity of the group in its early days was eachother, and their bond. When each of the EX3 chinese member left one by one the korean members did not take the severance very well and kind of turned their back on them out of hurt. Years later that rift had been mostly mended but you can still see why Tao is emotional about teamwork and stepping over someone is down for your own gain (in the clip the other girls were still racing then cheering and talking while the injured girl was still lying on the ground in pain.) TAO has always been an emotional person who wears his emotions on his sleeve. Maybe he went a bit overboard because he was upset and misdirected his feelings onto the girls but thinking back on what he went through, you can understand why he wanted to drill that message of 'care for your peers, don't step over those who are down' into them. It's a valuable lesson for them to know
@junkmail4329
@junkmail4329 2 года назад
+2 And this message goes hand in hand with the next scene. Those girls are from a now disbanded korean group called nine muses. The girls talk about how before debut they shared a collective dream and cared about eachother. After debut they lost that 'humanity' which caused the members to become jaded towards eachother and they fell apart as a group. What Tao is saying is the same thing. The music is one thing, but you must also care about yourself and others in order to survive as a group. If you cannot do that then your group has no future and you'll probably be more suspectible to the mental effects that such a cutthroat industry can give you.
@junkmail4329
@junkmail4329 2 года назад
+3 in addition to this I don't think you can necessarily place all the blame on the members of these disbanded groups shoulders. It may be true that some of them are just terrible and greedy human beings (for instance in cases where there is bullying withing groups) but the way these companies can manage groups can make even the most kind person become jaded. As you can hear from one of the girls, some members are given more attention, more screen time, more opportunities than others. The outcasted members must still participate in tiring schedules and all the negatives and hard work that come with being an idol. Yet they are shoved to the back while others get the spotlight because the company decided other members are more important and valuable. Imagine how that must feel, to put all the same effort, to spend your youth on this, and yet its someone else reaping all the personal benefits. The more popular members may get inflated egos while the background ones may feel frustrated and angry and left out. No wonder issues pop up between the members and they 'lose their humanity'- how could these mental states not arise when the company gives preferential treatment like this? That is why SHINHWA was included in this episode too. I am not a shinhwa fan so I am not sure how they were managed. But the group members all have the all-for-one mentality. All solo activities were done with the mindset that they were contributing to the group and the group's success, not their own individual egos. That's why shinhwa has been around for such a long time, defying the odds in an industry where groups don't often stay together past their second or even their first contract.

+4 I think, despite what their personal feelings about how this episode was done, @TheRiseofBangtan did a phenomenal job with their choice of clips and the narrative they wove for this episode. The only issue is really that to understand it fully you need some context to who these people and groups are and not everyone watching will know that context.

When we got that weverse notification a bit ago that 3 of the members had C-19, I cried. They've all taken every single precaution to lower their chances of getting it and because of that they were able to recover fast. I still have seen so much crap happen having lived in this world for 3 years now. Precaution don't remove the possibility of something worse occuring so it made me still worry. I'm sure many Army felt this way too.

As usual, Mr Jim thank you and 💖 Your reaction. I also disagree with how the host screamed at the girls in that show. I have seen one show from Korean broadcast also where the male judge undermine one girl contestant, even though she sang very well the judge said her body was unsuitable as a singer&ridicule her. I was so angry on why the others just let him said those hurtful words. The judge named was JYP, one of the BIG THREE in Korean entertainment. After that incident, I have never again watched this kind of show🤔

The guy you didn't like and the show he was on as an instructor was Chinese... Not the same thing (not that you could have known) in terms of mentality. I personally agree with you on this, don't like this way he did it. It devalues their autonomy as adults and is militaristic. Whether it was her own team or not doesn't make a difference to me in terms of liking the way he shouted at them, nor the lecture he gives them afterwards 🤷‍♀️

for the first clip of the survival program i get you point that the girls in her team stopped, but you have to consider that they were only in this team for this round or performance. In a survival show they switch teams all the time bc ultimatly u build the team from all these different people if u get what i mean. even if they were not in the same team for this game any of these girl no matter what could end up in the final group, so actually all of them are a team (bc some of them become the final group). I recommended watching i-land on patreon bc i think the way they approached this survial program thingy was a little different and in my opinion is definatly one of the best shows i have watched yet. I think it will be a ver interesting series for you to watch.

@18:19 BTS didnt get "recognized" as artists by the Korean public untill they had already won the BBMAs couple times and gotten really Really popular internationally, in 2017-2018 almost no one knew who they were in Korea, it was in 2018 that the South Korean Media started reporting some articles about them and the public started getting to know them a little bit. This is SO SAD.. Except the K-ARMY of course wich has been with them from the start but my guess is that even in 2018, at least 70%-80% of ARMY was all international ARMY. Now they have more fans in Korea of course, but i still doubt the ratio has changed much, the fandom has just grown all together. South Korea is pretty small country, and BTS has fans in almost every country.🙏

The team thing with the girls I was unsure if it was here own team mates who went to check on her or if it was the other girls who were racing against her at that point.. I was going to go back and take another look. Will do that at the end. Something I did notice he was speaking in Mandarin not Korean.

Jim why would the group be named 9Muses and there’s 20+ members? 🤨 I’m just messing with you 😂😂 but yeah there’s only 9 members in that group. The people behind them were ppl who lived in the village they were filming in (and were there to help them farm for the TV show).

Also i see American aren't used to getting scolded, i guess?? Since i moved to the US i was surprised how many kids in school weren't used to being corrected 🤔... For example a teacher in my home country if a child or a couple of children were misbehaving they would take the opportunity to corrected/speak to the entire classroom about this problem, so they all are aware... 🤔

I think the reason why everyone is trying so hard in everything because its hard to be in these show. If you are given chance to appear on this you have lack of screen time because 'you dont care'..its take a toll on the whole group. A chance to appear on show in tv meaning people can see your group. There is few group got popular because one of the member have talent in other things. Eg athletic-you will be invited to sports show, funny-you will be invited in variety show..a chance to appear in this show is a chance to promote your group.

The dude that you didn't like was speaking in Chinese so we can assume that it was not in South Korea or should be taken as representative of Kpop idol culture per se. If the point was bonding and group synergy then Hit Man Bang's take was quite different from the brow beating dude shown in this episode.

You should start watching Bon Voyage to actually get it. As DJ Jino said, there is where he "gets it" why are we like this with BTS.. You will start to see them as humans after Bon Voyage and i'm pretty sure after all this documentaries and finally watching them as people you will get it. He even said that he was kinda sad that he did it in a wrong way, reacting first to their music and all this crack videos and only after that watched Bon Voyage and In the Soop.. He said he should have done it other way around and i'm totally agree.. It's on this 2 shows where you get to know the boys, not in fan made video introductions even tho many of them are great but after knowing their REAL self from Bon Voyage and In The Soop. And me for exemple.. what made me army was not their music or youtube videos.. First i fell in love with their personalities, i liked them as people first after watching Bon Voyage and THEN i went to check their music, lyrics, music videos, performances and fell in love even more. But for me personally, BTS as people comes in the first place not anything else. I just genuinely want to see them happy because they deserve it, nothing else.
